On behalf of the festival committee I would like to welcome everyone to the Borrisoleigh Festival2015. Many have travelled long distances and from overseas to take part in the festivities. We hopeto provide fun and entertainment for all the family in a safe and friendly environment.

We have brought the festival forward in the year to July due to the inclement weather experiencedlast year in October. A huge thank you to all the people of Borrisoleigh who come together tomake this such a wonderful occasion and provide an opportunity to highlight all that is good in theParish to all who visit.

Little did I know when I decided to makethe move to Dubai what was ahead of me. Ithas been an exciting year full of firsts and ithas exceeded my expectations in every way.

It all began in September when a colleagueof mine in Raffles International School, Du-bai suggested that I attend the Dubai Rosemeeting for 2015. This girl was the 2013Dubai Rose and couldn't speak highlyenough of her 'Rose' experience. Given thatmy dad had christened me his 'Dubai Rose'at a dinner in Inch House before I left, I de-cided to give it a go. Things took off fromthere and very soon I was right in the thickof it. Since then, it has just been incredible.

First I took part in the Dubai Rose selectionwhere they mirrored the Tralee format. Iparticipated in individual interviews, groupinterviews and a stage interview which wasall very daunting to say the least. Luckily Iwas chosen to represent the Irish communityof Dubai in the Rose selection in Portlaoise.

Portlaoise was such an amazing experience-one that I will never forget. There were 56roses from all over the world there to repre-sent their Rose centres. Of this 56, 23 wereput through to go to Tralee in August. I wasthe last name called out which was a longwait for my friends and family. Thankfullyall the hard work paid off.

I would like to take this opportunity to thankall the people who travelled toPortlaoise, as well as all thepeople who sent cards andwell wishes my way. I appre-ciate them all so much and Iam overwhelmed by the sup-port I have received.

It is such a great honour to berepresenting the Irish commu-nity in Dubai but also to repre-sent Borrisoleigh on aninternational stage. It is an ex-perience I am really lookingforward to and I hope I can doyou all proud.

Historical SocietyAs part of the Borrisoleigh “Gathering Fes-tival” 2013, our Society undertook “ Walkdown Memory Lane”. Due to the successof same, we weren't in a position to com-plete the Walk.

The Gathering Festival of 2015 will in-clude the completion of the historical walkcommencing at Shanahan’s Centra Shop,Ileigh Road. at 3 o’clock on Saturday 25thJuly.

The Society has introduced many great lec-tures since its foundation to Borrisoleighand its environs. Probably the most histori-cal lecture was the “life and times of SeanHogan who was rescued at Knocklong”.We were privileged to have his son andname sake Sean Hogan at that lecture andmany of his relatives. We will recommenceour lectures in the Autumn and look for-ward to many and varied lectures.

Borris-Ileigh Camogie Club would like to wishall the best to the Borrisoleigh Festival commit-tee on all its fantastic efforts in making thisevent bigger and better each year.

Our club, which was re-established in 2007, hasgone from strength to strength, promoting itselffrom Junior level to qualifying as a Senior clubin a very short length of time. In 2014, our Inter-mediates reached both League and Champion-ship county finals, and won the CountyChampionship beating Drom in the final, andbrought the CARROLL CUP back to Borris.

Borris-Ileigh U14 Feile na Gael camogie teamtravelled to Donegal to represent their club andcounty on Friday 19th June to Sunday 21st June2015. The girls did there own fundraising to payfor the trip, and all support was greatly appreci-ated.

The clubs membership continues to increase.This is due to the dedication and time given byall the team mentors, who encourage all players,(as young as four!!) to train each week and goout and enjoy the game of camogie.Without, new players each year, clubs can di-minish, and it is the time given by all the men-tors, players and committee that our clubcontinues to be a success.

The Bush and Briar Ramblers welcome you allto the Borrisoleigh Festival 2015 and whateveryour choice of entertainment over the weekend,we hope you enjoy the fun on offer.We were established as a direct result of theGathering Festival in Borrisoleigh in October2013 and have slowly become part of the activecommunity organising moderate and easy walkslocally.Last year we organised 2 walks for the FestivalWeekend, one on the Devils Bit and the otherwas around the newly opened Inch Loop Walk(Cosán Felim)The Devils Bit is held dear to our hearts, notonly for its wonderful walking terrain and viewsbut also, as the place we evolved from and hasbeen adopted as our spiritual mountain and itsimage can be seen on our group badge.

This year we are again putting on 2 walks andmoving a little west to the general area of Lat-teragh Forest with both routes enjoying the tran-quillity and views on our own doorstep.1…. The long walk is 12km walk over a varietyof terrain, on and off track (through bush andbriar), to the summit of Knockanora (Lanigan’sTower) and it is really worth the effort.

2…. Line Dancing has been popular since 1970 but itwasnt until 1992 when Billy Ray Cyrus released asong called Acky Breaky Heart the Country LineDancing scene took off and a new generation ofdancing was born. The definition of Line Dancingis a synchronised choreographed steps by a group ofpeople who dance in a line and which may move torepeat the same pattern,facing up to four different“walls” (directions).

To this day Line Dancingis as big as it was allthose years ago but likeeverything it has changedwith the time and moved into the 21st century. Wedont dance to just Country and Western music wedance to every type of music. We also do a varietyof steps and dances that include Waltzes, Tangos,Latin American even Irish to name a few.

I started Line Dancing 16 years ago and I have beenan Advanced level dancer (there are five levels) formany years now. The August Bank Holiday lastyear I started my very first Line Dancing class here

in Borrisoleigh and it became so popular I started asecond class on Thursday nights the following Octo-ber. We have since learned up to twenty dances andwill be continuing this September. We dance for anhour and half and its an exciting fun way to exer-cise, you are more than welcome to join us. If youhave never danced before or if you fancy a new hob-

by then you will find usin the Marian Hall.

On Saturday July 25thwe will be in the squarefor our end of yearhoedown. We wouldlove to show you a cou-

ple of our dances and hopefully you will join us in adance or two. We start at at Midday and we will bethere until 1:30.

Don't forget your cowboyhats and lets have a realhonky-tonk party.

Unfortunately, I was on a hospital placementin Florida and missed out on the first Borri-soleigh Gathering Festival. I had to look onin envy at the photos and videos that wereappearing on Facebook. I got a sense that itwas a special occasion – a modern exampleof community spirit. Many good fruits andconcrete organisations have come from theGathering. At present the spirit of communi-ty is alive in Borris. This kind of spirit doesnot fall from the sky but comes from volun-teers who are willing to put their energy andtalents to work for the common good.

I have now been removed from home, onand off, for the best part of a six year period.As an ordained Priest, I will be assigned toanother community. I will have to try andmake a new home. This gives me a deeperappreciation of the parish where I wasraised. While Borrisoleigh is no longer thelittle village, it retains a big heart. Our peo-ple have a sense of solidarity in good timesand bad. We are by no means perfect but thevast majority of our people have that essen-tial foundation for a living community –generosity of spirit. We also have a sense ofpossibility and achievement which can betraced back to success on the sports field butprobably runs even deeper.

I think back to St. Cualan arriving into thequiet glen where he formed a community topraise God. I think of past generations wholived through poverty, famine and emigra-tion and those who fought for a better futurefor this nation. I think of the missionary spir-it in the parish, of Bishop Shanahan andQuinlan and others who brought the valuesthey learned here to the far reaches of theglobe. In our brave new world, I hope that

we don’t lose this connection with our herit-age. I am grateful for all the people of Borri-soleigh who have helped me not just in thelast six years journeying towards Priesthoodbut from my childhood. I am grateful for thevalues I learned here. It reminds me of theAfrican saying – “It takes a village to raise achild.” I am counting on your prayers tokeep me on the right path.

Events like the Gathering are a much neededantidote to the individualism of life today.Especially for our young people – whohaven’t seen as many county or All-Irelandfinal wins as we would like – it shows themthe community spirit and the importance ofcelebration in life. I don’t remember theFairs of Borris but I am just old enough toremember fondly, the neighbours comingtogether to save the ‘cocks’ of hay. I hopethat in years to come the children of thistime will look back fondly and reminisceabout the Gathering days.
