AVICTORIAN man believed to beAVA’s oldest-living Member willclock up his century this month.
He is Dr W. E. (Bill) Chamberlin, whonow resides in a staffed minimal carehostel at Forest Hill, Melbourne.An active lifelong supporter of the idea ofa professional association for veterinarians,he joined the NSW branch as a student –fully five years before the AVA wasestablished!Born on 22 October, 1900, he has been aMember of the AVA since 1 January, 1929.His devotion to the profession isunderlined by the fact that he moved fromMelbourne to Sydney in 1928 to completehis studies after the University ofMelbourne closed its veterinary school.Among his teachers was the legendary, IanClunies-Ross.Dr Chamberlain served as Treasurer of theVictorian Division before moving toTasmania, where he was largelyresponsible for reviving the then-defunctVeterinary Association of Tasmania. Hewas appointed as Secretary of the
Tasmanian body once it was up andrunning.Dr Chamberlin recently wrote to AVANational to offer thanks for his 25 years ormore membership certificate.“I am now 99 and will be 100 in Octoberand, hence, appreciate your wishes foranother 25 years!” he wrote.
According to staff atthe hostel, DrChamberlin is anextremely active,lucid and popularresident, who isregularly visited byhis extended family.“His room isabsolutely lined withvet books and hespends a lot of his
timing reading them,” one staff told theAVJ.The AVJ’s Scientific Editor, Prof ColinWilks, recently visited Dr Chamberlin atthe hostel. A report of their meeting isexpected to be published in the next AVJ.
AVA’s oldest Membercelebrates his 100th!
THE Chief Executive Officer of theAVA, Barbara Horsfield, will stepdown from the post on 21
October.After almost five years in the job she hasdecided it is time to retire to spend moretime with her husband, John, her familyand her beloved dachshunds. Prior to joining the AVA, Barbara was theNational Executive Officer of the GirlGuides Association of Australia for 10years. During that period she was awardedthe Medal of the Order of Australia in1992 for services to Guiding.Previously, Barbara had been ExecutiveOfficer for the Macquarie UniversityGraduate School of Management. She hadalso been the Personnel Manager withMyers Ltd.
The CEO’s farewell column is publishedon p664 and tributes to her efforts onbehalf of the AVA appear in Viewpoint(p663) and in a letter from a formerNational President, Dr Geoff Niethe(p675).

STOP PRESS: NEW CEOThe AVA Board has appointed a newChief Executive Officer to take the helmof the Association from 23 October thisyear.He is Mr Bruce Wynn, who most recentlyworked as General Manager Agriculturefor the Royal Agricultural Society ofNSW. He was selected through anexhaustive process that examined the 55original applicants for the job and thenintensively interviewed and reference-checked the short-listed candidates.
