THE ALLENS’ FARMIrvine runs a calf to beef enterprise in Athlone,Westmeath. Calves are generally Angus orHereford cross from dairy herds bought atabout 3 weeks of age and vaccinatedaccordingly. Calves are reared on anautomatic feeder for about 12 weeks acrosstwo feed stations. Irvine aims for weight gainof above 0.8 g per head per day over therearing phase. Calves are offered straw atarrival and upon weaning they are consumingat least 2kg of Nutrias Calf Crunch and GrowerATP. Cattle are finished under 20 months withcarcass weights of between 350- 400 kg.
