By:LoraBaje For50years,theUPSchoolofEconomicshasbeenakeycornerstoneinproducingthecountry’sbesteconomistsandleaders.Tocelebratethisspecialfeat,theUPSEhasdecidedtoholddifferentactivitiesforthe50yearsofexcellenceithasgiventothisnation.TheUPEconomicsSociety and in partnership with the UPSE-at-50 committee held abonfirelastJanuary30entitled“EconLightItUp”asalaunchtothe50thanniversaryofourcollegeandthisfeaturedvariousperformancesfromdifferentstudents,alumniandfacultywhichincludedDeanRamonClareteandEcosocalumnaandnowprofessor,SarahDaway.Also,attendeeswereable to roastmarshmallows thatadded to the laidback setting. Indeed, itwasanightwhereeveryone tooka timeoutfromdrawinggraphsandenjoyedamomentoftogethernesswiththewholeUPSEcommunity.

LastFebruary11,theUPEconomicsSocietyandtheUPUndergroundMusicCommunity,againcelebratedthevibranceofthelocalmusicscenein,RootsMusicFestival2015,aspartoftheannualUPFair.

Following the success of the previous year, Roots 2015 featuredheadlinersKamikazee,Urbandub,Franco,Pupil, Itchyworms,Typecast,BulletDumas,AngBandangShirley,alongwithotherlocalbands.Truetoitsname,Rootsalsofeaturedmanyup-and-comingactstocompletetheline-upthattrulycreatedanighttoremember.

Along with the UP Underground Music Community, this event wasorganizedbytheEcoSocTaskForce,aspecialcommitteededicatedtomaintainingtheUPEcoSocScholarshipFund,whichsendsoursevenhighschoolandcollegescholarstoschool.

Roots 2015: Sounds Good

Last February 7, 2015, a day before the 50th anniversary of the foundingoftheSchoolofEconomics,theUPSEcommunityoffacultyandstaff,studentsandalumnigatheredattheBahayngAlumniforafirsteverGalaNight.WiththeGoldenJubileethemeof“BONDFORGOLD”,itwasanightofcelebrationfortheSchool’sandit’salumni’sachievements,anightofcamaraderieandarekindlingofmemoriesandfriendshipsofeveryone’syearsinUPSE.Earlierat4pm,aPre-GalacocktailswasheldattheUPSEtocelebratetheinaugurationofthenewly-renovatedUPSElobbysponsoredbyBatch’83. Theevening’sprogramwasproducedanddirectedbyaward-winningUPSEalumnusBartGuingona.ItfeaturednotableUPSEalumniintheentertainmentfieldlikeJonSantosdoingaMiriamDefensor-Santiagoimpression,tenorFrankieAsenierosingingtheinvocation“ThePrayerwithMaricrisJoaquin,SittiNavarrosingingsambasongs,UPSEalumniwhowereonceUPConcertChorusmemberssingingintheirsignaturestyleandalumnusRenzVeranowiththerestoftheOPMHitmendoingamedleyofclassicOPM.Therewereaudio-videopresentationsoftheSchool’stimeline,apreviewofUPSE’sCommemorativeBook,thelaunching of the “Giving Back” fund raising programof theUPSE,amongothernumbersintheprogram.Toaddmoreexcitement,therewerearound200prizeitemsthatwereraffledoff.
