Why a Warm Up Book? As a band, we strive to be the best performers we can possibly be. We have limited rehearsal time, so we attempt to squeeze as many musical experiences as we possibly can. This causes us to very often overlook what is the most important opportunity to develop as holistic musicians. We can never truly be reaching our full potential as musicians without developing a strong foundation in the basic elements of music.
In this warm up book, we will focus on the building blocks of musicianship, ensuring we have a firm grasp on the fundamentals that inform the rest of our playing. This book aims to help us develop:
• A characteristic Tone on our Instruments• A strong familiarity with all of the notes on our instruments • A Center of Intonation and the ability to recognize and adjust pitch• Fluency of Articulation• Musicality and Phrasing • Rhythm Fluency and Accuracy • Range across our Instruments• The Flexibility to move across the Entirety of our Instruments
Every exercise in this warm up book is designed to help us develop in at least one of these areas. Some exercises help us develop across multiple areas of focus.
Why so many Sections in the Book? While it is not realistic to attempt to play every exercise in the book every day, or even every week, the idea is to develop a routine of addressing at least one area of focus every time the ensemble meets. Ideally, the area addressed in the warm up, would correspond to what the students will be focusing on for the remainder of the rehearsal.

Getting Started
In It’s most fundamental form, reading music can be broken down into two main ideas:
Pitch: How High or Low the Note Sounds
From this idea we get concepts such as:
• Intonation
• Harmony
• Melody
Rhythm: The placement of sound in time
From this idea we get concepts such as:
• Whole Notes/Half Notes/ Half Notes/ Quarter Notes
• Time Signatures
• Rests
Of course, there is more to it than that, but all of the other musical symbols and ideas build off of these two main ideas

The Staff
Music is written using a Staff. The musical Staff is made up of 5 Horizontal Lines, and the 4 spaces between them. Notes are written on both lines and in the spaces.
ClefThe Clef tells you how to read the notes on the lines and in the spaces.
Line Space

Treble Clef
Reading notes on the treble clef is easy and can be broken down into remembering what notes go on the lines, and what notes go in the spaces.
On the Line: Every Good Boy Does Fine
In the Space: The notes spell FACE

Ledger LinesThe notes on the staff can also be looked at as going alphabetically
We can also write notes above and below the staff using what we call Ledger Lines
We use ledger lines in bass clef also

Notes, Half Steps and Whole Steps
There are 12 notes in Music…They get their name from the alphabet
A through G
We measure the distance between notes in half steps and whole steps
Certain Notes have a Sharp/Flat in between them. The distance between a note and a Sharp/Flat is a half step. Two half steps is a Whole Step
Enharmonics:
A note can be written with either a sharp or a flat. Written either way, the note will still Sound the same.
examples: A# = Bb, C# = Db, D# = Eb, F# = Gb, G# = Ab
A B C D E F G

INTERVALS
In music, the term interval refers to the distance between two notes. Each interval has a specific name. Those names are shown below and an explanation on how we find the
name. In order to find an interval name, we must count all letter names involved between and including the letter names of the notes shown.

What about a note that is equal to 3? This is where we use dots. A dot is a way to add length to a note.
Dots take 1/2 of the value of the note, and add it back to the note

ArticulationArticulation is a concept that covers several aspects of a note. The main two uses for
the term, relate to:
1) How a note starts
2) How it relates to the notes around it
Unless otherwise instructed, notes generally begin with the use of the tongue.
This chart shows the name of the articulation type, the written note, a visual representation of the note, and a description of how each note should be played
!
General rule of thumb is the note is played the way that it looks:
Staccato dots LOOK separated, so the note SOUNDS separated
Accents: Look like the start large and get small, so they SOUND louder when the start than when they end
Tenuto: LOOK long and connected, so they SOUND full length and connected
Marcato: Look Like Accents, but also separate, so they SOUND accented and separated

SlursA slur is a curved line that attached 2 or more notes of DIFFERENT pitch. The first note
under a slur marking is tongued and all the notes after are NOT tongued
Slurs make the music sound more smooth and connected.

TiesA tie is a curved line that attaches notes of the SAME pitch. Ties add the note values together
and are to played as one unbroken note.
The Tie combines the value of both notes. The Quarter note is worth 1 beat, the half note is worth 2 beats, the tie combines them into a note worth 3 beats.
Ties and slurs are easily confused…
Remember:
Slurs are curved lines that connect DIFFERENT notes. Slurs change the way that you start a note. (With your tongue vs. with NO tongue)
Ties are curved lines that connect the SAME note. Ties change the length of the note. (Combining the notes to create a longer note)
1 Beat 2 Beats = 3 Beats

KEY SIGNATURES
A key signature is a set of sharps or flats at the beginning of a piece of music that tells us to play certain notes as sharp or flat all the way through the piece. The key signature is derived from the sharps or flats present in the major scale. Key signatures will never contain both sharps and flats at the same time!
Example # 1:
The first set of examples below show the Bb major scale written without a key signature. There are two notes in the scale that are flat: Bb, Eb. The second set of examples, show the scale written using a key signature. The flat notes in the scale have now been moved over to the key signature.
In the above examples, the same notes are played flat each time.
Key signatures are read from left to right. The sharps and flats are ALWAYS put in the same order. The Order of Flats is: B E A D G C F The Order of Sharps is: F C G D A E B

Chromatics and Long TonesChromatics:
Development of familiarity across all of the notes of your instrument is key to being the best player that you can be. We naturally become more familiar with certain keys and certain notes on our instruments. If we are not making an effort to play all of the notes available to us, we often develop weaknesses to playing certain pitches. Chromatics
force us to give attention to notes that we see less often, ensuring that we don’t neglect certain less seen, but no less important areas on our instruments.
Long Tones:
The development of a characteristic tone on our instruments should be of primary importance to a musician. One of the primary ways we develop centered confident and full sounds, is through the use of long tones. Long tones force us to focus on the sound
that is being created, rather than on the rhythmic or technical difficulties of a piece of music. Because there is little technical detail long tones can often be overlooked as
‘boring’. But, they are key to the development of any wind instrument player. The long tones in this warm up, are a modified Remington pattern. When playing them, pay special attention to the tone being created. Strive for the best sound that you can
possibly make on both of the pitches. You will initially be more comfortable with certain pitches, will come across as differences in intonation or dynamics. Make every effort to
create even and consistent sounds regardless of the notes being played.
These exercises focus primarily on:
• Tone Development
• Intonation
• Timing
• Balance
• Blend

Chorales
Playing slow and lyrical music is essential to building individual musicianship. Just like any warm-up however, if it is done haphazardly and without a goal in mind, it is useless
and a waste of time. While you are playing these chorales, are you focused on:
• Tone Quality
• Balance
• Blend
• Intonation
• Phrasing
• and all other aspects of basic musicianship (counting, attacks, releases, key signatures etc)
The Chorales are not designed to be overly taxing technically, so it is your chance to raise the level of expectation for your own playing. Don’t be happy with ‘close enough’,
strive for perfection in every aspect of your playing.
These exercises will be a mirror of your musicianship, and will expose (for better of for worse) what you are focusing on as a musician

HorkstowGrange
collected byPercy Grainger
(1906)
3
3
Horkstow Grange is a folk tune that Percy Grainger collected in 1906 by recording George Gouldthorpe. It is the tale of how a waggoner, John "Steeleye" Span, and his foreman, John Bowlin', fell out and came to blows.
Gouldthorpe informed Grainger that Steeleye Span resented John Bowlin's harsh treatment and, burning with resentment, Span wrote this song. The words are set to the tune of a ballad about naval mistreatment
"Andrew Rose, the British Sailor". No other variants of this song have been found.
Horkstow Grange is a house and range of farm buildings situated about half a mile north of Saxby All Saints. Those who have researched the songs have produced no written evidence of these men or indeed
any local memory of them other than in this song.
Grainger recorded Gouldthorpe singing "Horkstow Grange". Gouldthorpe had a strong North Lincolnshire accent and takes the song at a brisk pace.
Grainger's arrangement of the song for his "Lincolnshire Posy Suite" (1937) is very different. Grainger slows the song down considerably giving it a stately feel. This is arguably the greatest transformation of any Grainger arrangement
and he deserves credit for creating such a fine piece from such as a fragmentary song.( http://www.lincolnshireassembly.com/section.asp?docId=79588 )

ScalesScales are the building blocks of all music. Every song is made up of them, and every
chord is made up of notes from the scales that you practice every day. Our primary focus with scales is the develop of technical expertise. You will develop finger dexterity and a greater technical proficiency on your instrument by learning the 12 major scales,
and the patterns in your warm ups.
We are able to adapt the scale exercises to focus on many different aspects of playing. The scale patterns in this book allow us to perfect:
• Greater range on individual instruments
• Timing
• Articulation
• Dynamics
• Style
• Listening
• Intonation
• Flexibility
As you practice the scales, you will start to develop Muscle Memory, and your fingers will begin to recognize the scale patterns will less effort. This takes time and repetition
however. Do not make the mistake of thinking practicing the scale one time, is the same as mastering the scale. You can be confident that you understand the scale, if you can perform each pattern in this book, but mastery of each key takes time and
effort. This is just the start of your scale journey, and your introduction to the foundation that all music is built on.
![Page 62: Alto Saxophone - Granger Jr High School Musicgrangerjhsmusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Alto.v2... · 2017. 10. 17. · Warm Ups Alto Saxophone. Why a Warm Up Book? As a band,](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062610/610c684a593f7c51db6adf61/html5/thumbnails/62.jpg)
Scale Variations
Scales are ideal tools to learn new concepts, or to perfect concepts that we see in everyday music, Specifically, the idea of articulation.
The velocity scale pattern will help you gain finger dexterity, and a better understanding of each key, but we can also use it to get extra practice with articulations.
The four eighth note groups can be varied to create more complicated articulation patterns. The articulations we will be using for each scale are:
With these different articulation patterns, velocity becomes 6 separate exercises, where the staccato dot represents a tongued note, and the slurs represent slurred notes.
These are the basic articulation variations for the velocity exercise. More maybe be added later.

RhythmAs discussed earlier in this book, music is made up two fundamental parts: Pitch and Rhythm. This book has been dedicated to the development of tonal concepts, training the ear to hear pitches, and the musicians to
make the necessary adjustments while playing to ensure they are playing the correct pitches.
The next section of the warm up book is dedicated to developing rhythmic literacy and accuracy. Being able to identify and perform rhythms is one of the fundamental
components of being a musician.
This rhythm section will address developing a basic understanding of counting using the standard 1 e + a
counting system. While beginning with simple rhythms in 4/4 time, it expands to different meters, and more
complex rhythmic patterns.
The main skill that cannot be ignored from the most simple, to the most complex rhythmic patterns, is the
concept of subdividing. The more a musician can break up rhythmic patterns and notes, the more accurately the
rhythms can be performed.
