“Geoengineering”, the deliberate manipulaLon ofthe global climate, is a technologically feasibleopLonthatwasonceseenascrazyandtaboobutisnow gaining momentum. In a context of rapidlychanging climate and rising risks of extreme eventsand slow onset crises like sea level rise, one of theopBons currently under consideraBon is solargeoengineering: to use aircrao to disperse smallsulfuricparBclesintheupperatmosphereinordertoreflect a small fracBon of incoming sunlight back tospace inorder toparBally counteractmanynegaBveeffects of global warming. Its use could entail aredistribuBonofsomeclimatebenefitsandrisksonaregional basis, thereby reshuffling the roster ofclimate“winners”and“losers.”

Using innovaLve, interacLveapproaches, thissessionwill draw from science and art to offer a tailoredintroducLon to solar geoengineering – includingtechnology, ethics and governance, focusing onimplicaLons for disaster risk managers, researchers, donors, privatesector, andotherURstakeholders.ParBcular akenBon will be given to exploringpossibiliBes for using novel index-based insurance, inwhich payouts are determined by the value of anindependent index, asamechanism for compensaBngharmsfromsolargeoengineering.
