Parent-teacher conferences are an importantpart of a child’s education. It gives parents an op-portunity to discuss with teachers the progresstheir kids are making in the classroom, as wellas the challenges they face.

The following are tips for making the most outof the experience:

CONFERENCE TIPS

Ten tips for a successful parent-teacher con-ference:

1Ask your child if there is anything that hewould like you to discuss with the teacher.

2Jot down everything that you want to talkabout at the conference.

3Arrive promptly or a few minutes early.

4Begin with positive comments about theteacher or classroom.

5Avoid lengthy discussions of topics thatare not related to the purpose of the con-

ference.

6Be open-minded to suggestions from theteacher.

7Keep your emotions under control.

8Take notes about what has been discussedto share with your child.

9Express appreciation for the conference.

10Do not stay beyond your allotted time.

A QUICK GUIDE

More tips about what to do during a parent-teacher conference, provided by the NationalParent Teacher Association:

During the Conference

l Establish rapport: As an icebreaker, takenotice of something that reflects well upon theteacher. For example, thank the teacher for hav-ing made thoughtful notes on your child’s home-work or for the special attention in helping yourchild learn to multiply.

lAsk questions: Questions you ask during theconference can help you express your hopes forthe student’s success in class and for the teacher. It’s a good idea to ask the important questionsfirst, in case time runs out. The teacher’s answersshould help you both work together to help yourchild.

l If your child receives special services (e.g.,gifted and talented programs, speech or occupa-tional therapy), be sure to ask about the frequen-cy of services and your child’s progress.

lAddressing problems: Parent-teacher con-ferences are a good time to discuss any difficul-ties (either academic or behavioral) a child mightbe having at school. When problems arise, par-ents will want to:

1. Avoid angry or apologetic reactions. In-stead, ask for examples.

2. Ask what is being done about the problemand what strategies seem to help at school.

3. Develop an action plan that may includesteps that parents can take at home and steps theteacher will take when the problem comes up atschool.

4. Schedule a follow-up conference and decideon the best way to stay in touch (phone, e-mail,or letters sent to the home).

lDevelop an action plan: If the student needshelp with a behavioral or an academic issue, youand the teacher should agree on specific plans —that you both will work on — to help your childdo better. Be sure you understand what the teachersuggests. If it’s not clear, ask him or her to ex-

plain. Set up a way to check on your child’sprogress. You and the teacher can decide how bestto stay in touch, such as through phone calls, notes, or additional meetings.

lEnding the conference: End the conferenceby reviewing what you discussed and restatingyour action plan. This is also a good time to setup your next meeting.

After the conferencel When discussing the conference with the

child afterward, stress the good things that werecovered and be direct about problems that wereidentified.

l If an action plan is in place, explain to thechild what was arranged.

lWhen an action plan is in place, consider thefollowing: Watch your child’s behavior and checkon classwork and homework. Ask how the stu-dent feels about schoolwork. Stay in touch withthe teacher to discuss your child’s progress. Ex-press appreciation as progress is made. A goodway to promote a continuing relationship with theteacher is to say “thank you” with a note or a tele-phone call.

lContinuing to keep in touch with the teacher, even if things are going well, can play an impor-tant role in helping the child do better in school.

l When a child knows parents and teachersare regularly working together, the child will seethat education is a high priority requiring com-mitment and effort.

QUESTIONS TO ASKl In what subjects/activities does my child

show the most interest?l Does my child participate in class discus-

sions?l How often do you assign homework?l How should I help with homework?l How do you track my child’s progress?l Does my child work well independently?

Does he succeed in a group situation?l Does my child have friends in the class?

Does he get along well with adults?l If my child has academic difficulties, is

there help provided by the school?lHow can I help enhance my child’s educa-

tion at home?lHow do I stay in touch with you? Keep the

lines of communication open long after the con-ference.

FLU POLICYl Guam Department

of Education studentsand staff who exhibitingsymptoms of the H1N1flu, or swine flu, shouldstay home for three tofive days, or for 24 hoursafter their fever is gonewithout the use of feverreducing medicine, whichever is longer.

l The school willkeep track of attendance.Students returning afterthe stay-home periodmust also be cleared by the school nursebefore they can go back to their class-room.

l If a student is found to be ill in class, the child will be taken to the school nurseand isolated from other students. The par-ents will be called to take their childhome.

HEALTH TIPSHere are some health tips provided by

Department of Education nurses for par-ents:

l The responsibility of your child’shealth lies with you.

l If your child has symptoms of anyillness take him to the family doctor.

l If your child is complaining of aheadache, stomachache or other symp-toms of illness, the rule of thumb is tokeep your child at home.

l Be sure the school has accurateemergency numbers so you can be con-tacted in case of an emergency.

l The school nurse, in most cases, isallowed to administer fever/pain-reducingmedication, but always talk to the schoolnurse before sending your child to schoolwith medication - even if your child hasonly a slight fever.

lYou must provide the school nursewith written consent to administer anymedication.

l If you suspect she is using the illnessto avoid going to school, talk to yourchild’s teacher for possible reasons andsolutions.

l Be sure that your child’s immuniza-

tion records are up to date.lA flu shot can help reduce the severi-

ty of flu or even help your child avoid theflu.

l If your child is sick, call the teacherand pick up his assignments so he doesn’tfall behind in class.

Sending your child homeYour child may be sent home if they

have: l Gastro intestinal problems such as

vomiting or diarrhea l Pinkeye – also known as conjunc-

tivitis, which is an inflammation of theclear membrane that covers the whites inthe eyes. If you think your child may havepinkeye, observe any swelling of the eyeovernight and if it’s clear by morning, itmay have been an allergic reaction. If it’sstill red with discharge, take your child tosee the family doctor.

l Head lice – also known as pediculo-sis. These tiny parasites lay eggs in hairand suck small amounts of blood. Treat-ments include over-the-counter lice treat-ment shampoo and removal of lice with afine-tooth comb. Generally, schools willgive a child several days off to treat theconidtion.

l Rashes – If a child is sent homewith an unusual rash, parents may needmedical clearance to return the child backto school, especially if the rash is impeti-go, also known as Guam sores, which re-quires treatement.
