Homegrown automajor Tata Motorsreported 41.54 per

cent jump in net profit to~3,199.93 crore for the Junequarter of the current fiscal,benefiting from one-timegain relating to changesmade to JLR pension plans.

It had posted consolidatednet profit of ~2,260.4 crore inthe April-June period of lastfiscal, Tata Motors said in aBSE filing. Income from oper-ations during the periodunder review stood at~59,818.22 crore, as against~66,165.89 crore in the year-ago period, down 9.59 percent. “Consolidated profitbefore tax for the quarterincludes one-time gain of~3,609 crore (437 millionpound) relating to thechanges made to the JaguarLand Rover pension plans,”Tata Motors said.

Volume sales, includingexports of commercial andpassenger vehicles for thequarter stood at 1,11,860 units,down 11.8 per cent when com-pared to the correspondingquarter last year, it said.

Tata Motors said its oper-ating performance broadlyreflected JLR’s lower whole-

sale volumes excluding ChinaJV and continuation of high-er competitive incentive lev-els and launch and growthcosts seen in FY17.

In the domestic market,there has been significant de-growth in the medium andheavy commercial vehiclessegment, flat light commer-cial segment and moderate

growth in passenger vehiclessegment. Tata Motors MD &CEO Guenter Butschek said:“While the first quarter resultshave not met our expecta-tions, we are working withrenewed focus and energy toimprove performance of ourcommercial and passengervehicle businesses.” On astandalone basis, Tata Motors

posted loss of ~467.05 crore forthe June quarter of 2017-18 fis-cal. It had registered a profit of~25.75 crore in the same periodof 2016-17. Total income fromoperations on a standalonebasis during the quarter was at~10,375.32 crore as comparedto ~11,434.91 crore in the year-ago period, down 9.26 percent. British arm JLR reporteda revenue of £5.6 billion, up£244 million.

JLR’s profit before tax was£595 million, up from £399million in the year-ago period.This included a £437 millionone-off credit relating to recentchanges designed to improvethe sustainability of the com-pany’s defined benefit pensionplans, Tata Motors said. JLRretail sales for the quarter wasat 137,463 units, up 3.5 per centfrom the year-ago period.

Despite roadblocks, in the form of thegoods and services tax (GST) and uncer-tainty over continuation of Fame (fasteradoption and manufacturing of hybridand electric vehicles) schemes, electrictwo-wheeler makers are going aheadwith their investment plans.

Hero has said it would invest ~50-75

crore a year to bring high-speed scooters,while new entrant Okinawa Auto-techhas said it would invest around $40 mil-lion (around ~300 crore). Okinawa alsoplans to manufacture batteries, throughits vendors, locally.

According to reports, India’s elec-tric-two-wheeler market is all set todouble to 45,000 units this year. Heroclaims around 65 per cent market sharein the space. Sohinder Gill, chief exec-

utive officer, Hero Electric, said theyaim to be a ~1,000-crore company inthe next four years, as against around~100 crore now. To support the growth,it is planning to launch at least two newscooters every year for the next fewyears. Each would attract an invest-ment of around ~25 crore.

The firm will offer higher speed so asto make them similar in performance topetrol scooters, said Gill.

London-based Dunnhumby plans toopen its second research and devel-opment centre in India to provide cus-tomer-centric services and data-driv-en solutions to its global clients.

The company, which has one cen-tre in Gurugram, offers services tofirms such as Cadbury, Coca-Cola,Colgate-Palmolive, Danone, Diageo,GloxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson,Kellogg’s, L’Oréal and Unilever.

The company is yet to take a call onthe location of the new centre, its newChief Executive Officer GuillaumeBacuvier, who was earlier vice-presi-dent of advertising solutions at Google,said. Dunnhumby has fewer than 400people, mainly data scientist and engi-neers, at its R&D centre in Gurugram.In the past few years, hiring at the firmgrew about 20 per cent a year. Bacuviersaid: “We hope to continue doing so.”

The company does not have clientsin India as of now but is eyeing bigretail groups and consumer goodscompanies. It already servesHindustan UniLever, Procter andGamble at the global level. “It can beany international company with oper-ations in India. It can be any nativeIndian company,” he said.

As to how his experience withGoogle helped him initiate the busi-ness strategy in the new firm, he said,“We help retailers generate revenueby selling advertising on their websiteswithin their store, we help them usetheir data to create and target audi-ence segments basically that can beused to draw an advertising, so I bringexperience of that space because this ishow Google makes money primarily.”

So far as his competition in Indiais concerned, he said there are somelocal players, more so software play-ers, in space of CRM systems and bigdata. “So we have a bit of local com-petition, though no one quite doesnear what we do. And then in addi-tion to that, some consulting firms,like Accenture, operate somewhat inour space because dunnhumby isboth a consulting company and asoftware company,” he added.

GoAir plans international foray ANEESH PHADNIS

GoAir plans to launch overseasoperations with flights fromMumbai to Phuket and Malein Maldives, in the winterschedule. GoAir became eligi-ble to launch internationalservices last year when itinducted its 20th aircraft.However, the launch has beenpostponed because of delay indeliveries of the AirbusA320neo planes.

GoAir has 23 Airbus A320planes including five A320neoaircraft. The airline is expectedto receive two planes by Octoberand would firm up its overseasplans by then, sources said.

A GoAir spokesperson didnot respond to an email queryon the topic. At present, there

are no direct flights fromPhuket to India, and Male islinked only to cities in southIndia and Delhi. Securing a slotat the Mumbai airport couldbe easier given the airportoperator's preference for vir-gin international routes.

“We have plans to start over-seas operations from Octoberthis year,” GoAir's ManagingDirector Jehangir Wadia said.He said initially the airlinewould fly to Asian destinations.

India is growing at about nineper cent and rival low-costcarriers are increasing fre-quencies or launching newroutes to cater to thisdemand. IndiGo has pro-posed to start services toColombo from Mumbai andBengaluru and has appoint-ed a general sales agent in SriLanka. It is considering ATRaircraft services as well. AirIndia Express, on the otherhand, is starting a Madurai toSingapore service.

GoAir had planned to beginits international operations withflights from Kochi to Doha inQatar and Dammam in SaudiArabia by the second-half of thisyear. But, the launches havebeen put on the back-burner.They have now zeroed in onPhuket and Maldives.

How is SAP addressingfirms’ demand for digitaltransformation?In Asia-Pacific, our softwareand cloud revenues grew 13per cent and cloud sub-scriptions and support rev-enue grew 52 per cent (year-on-year). Our first focus inIndia is on digital transfor-mation and innovation forsmall and medium enter-prises. The second is ourpartnership with the min-istry of micro, small andmedium enterprises, wherewe are targeting 30,000firms to become digitallyready. Besides these two, weare also educating business-es and people and work withover 320 universities.

Can MSMEs afford thecosts involved?We have got a pricing modelfor all our solutions andabout 80 per cent of our cus-tomers in India and evenacross Asia Pacific and Japanare small and mediumenterprises. Our pricing iscompetitive and we havebeen working with MSMEsever since we have had a basein the region. We have solu-tions that are tailor-made forthis segment. These busi-nesses will ultimately be theeconomic drivers.

How has business in Indiaresponded to digitaltransformation?Indian customers have anappetite for innovation andlead change. Companieshere never debate a moveto digital. They are alwayspushing to grow their busi-ness in the domestic mar-ket and internationally.The stable economic andsocial atmosphere helps

create a sense of confi-dence. This is encouraging.We are optimistic across allmarkets here.

Indian IT firms are goingthrough a rough patch oflow growth and lay-offs insome cases. Your views?There is no issue with SAPbusiness or professionals, asthe demand is strong. Thereis a strong resilience in themarket place that we oper-ate in and short-term eco-nomic cycles don’t have amajor impact. In our case, weincrease our headcount by1,000 every year and our cur-rent size is 11,000 employ-ees. If you add the 600 part-ners we work with, thenumber of SAP profession-als rises to 200,000 people.

How are you working withstart-ups?We work with start-ups in anumber of ways. They cancreate a viable business andharness a market within ashort time and that is a tar-get area for SAP. We have afocused global programmewhich helps incubate start-ups and bring them up toscale. We have a proud his-tory of working with smallenterprises to help theirbusiness. We keep an eyeon innovations across thestart-up ecosystem andhave a close relationshipwith the startup communi-ty. It helps us rethink ourbusiness models.

Commercial vehicles maker Eicher Motors onWednesday reported a 22.14 per cent rise inconsolidated net profit at ~459.62 crore for the firstquarter ended June 30, 2017. It had posted a netprofit of ~376.29 crore during the April-Junequarter a year-ago. Total consolidated income wasup 29.49 per cent to ~2,332.67 crore during thequarter under review, against ~1,801.30 crore inthe corresponding quarter of FY16.
