    2014 NCSEA EXCELLENCE INSTRUCTURAL ENGINEERING AWARDS

    CALL FOR ENTRIES

    The National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) announces the Call for Entries for the2014 NCSEA Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards Program. The purpose of the program is torecognize creative achievement and innovation in structural engineering.

    ELIGIBILITY

    Entry must be submitted by a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Structural Engineer (S.E.) whosepractice or activity is primarily in the field of structural engineering.

    Projects must have been completed between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2013, or must be sufficientlycomplete such thatthey clearly show the basic design of the structural system. The submittals will be judged

    based on the quality of the structural design portion of the project. Within the context of this awardsprogram, design refers to the overall concept of any structure or structural system within a project. Newprojects, renovations, rehabilitation, structural upgrades and adaptive reuse of buildings, other structures, andbridges are eligible. Projects may be located anywhere in the world. Multiple entries from the same firm willbe accepted.

    CATEGORIES OF AWARDS

    Awards will be presented in eight project categories:

    New Buildings under $10 Million New Buildings $10 Million to $30 Million New Buildings $30 Million to $100 Million New Buildings over $100 Million International Structures over $100 Million New Bridge and Transportation Structures Forensic / Renovation / Retrofit / Rehabilitation Structures Other Structures

    Up to three entries in each category will be chosen to receive the NCSEA Excellence in Structural EngineeringAward. From those three winners, one will be chosen as an NCSEA Outstanding Project. Non-winning

    projects from last years program may be re-submitted, provided they are still eligible based on completiondate.

    New Building Categories

    The four categories of new building projects are divided based on total construction cost of the building,exclusive of site or non-building related construction cost. Projects may include any type of building that canbe occupied or used by people. This would include parking garages, airport control towers, industrialbuildings, and similar structures. International buildings with a construction cost of less than $100 M shouldbe entered into the smaller building category that applies, based on size.

    International Structures over $100 M

    This category is reserved for any structural project located outside the continental United States, Hawaii,Alaska, and Puerto Rico. Projects can be of any type, including building and bridge and transportationstructures. Projects with a construction cost of less than $100 Million should be entered into one of the othercategories, based on size and type.

    New Bridge and Transportation Structures

    This category includes vehicle and pedestrian bridges, highway structures, pipe or utility support spans, andsimilar structures. Projects may be of any span length or overall size.

    Forensic / Renovation / Retrofit / Rehabilitation StructuresThis category includes forensic analysis, structural renovations, seismic retrofits, adaptive re-use,rehabilitation of existing buildings or bridges, and similar projects.

    Other StructuresThis category includes non-building or bridge structures, such as towers, monuments, sculptures, artinstallations, pavilions, and similar projects.

    CONSTRUCTION COSTThe stated construction cost of the entry should be the approximate construction cost of the facility beingentered, exclusive of site construction costs or the cost of other portions of the project. For example, a $15Mbuilding that is part of a three-building, $50M development should be submitted as a $15M project. An $8Mbridge that is part of a $60M highway project should be submitted as $8M. The Foreign Building Structures,Forensic / Renovation / Retrofit / Rehabilitation and Other Projects categories will not be divided byconstruction cost.

    JURY OF AWARDS

    The selection of award recipients will be made by a distinguished Jury of Awards. There will be a minimumof five jurors. All jurors shall be structural engineers licensed as P.E.s or S.E.s.

    JUDGING CRITERIA

    Creativity of structural design (20%) Complexity of criteria or unique problems (20%) Innovative application of new or existing materials or techniques (20%) Ingenuity of design for efficient use of materials and labor (20%) Exceeding client / owners needs or expectations (15%) Suitability of the structure for its environment (5%)

    The manner in which the above criteria apply to the entry should be described in the submitted documentation.

    SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES

    Project entries must include the following material (one copy, bound in a ring or other suitable binder, in theorder given), along with the $300 entry fee, made payable to NCSEA:

    Completed NCSEA entry form A description of the entry outlining the significant aspects of the entry and their relationship to

    the relevant judging criteria (800 words maximum, provide an editable file).

    A summary of the entry to be used in publications (100 words maximum, provide an editablefile)

    Photographs during construction and of the completed structure (minimum of 4 and not morethan 8, 8 in. by 10 in. maximum, provide .jpg files)

    Plans or sketches may be included (not more than two pages total, 8.5 in. by 11 in. maximum) A CD containing all of the information listed above.

    The top three projects in each category will be required to provide NCSEA with the following for use in futurepublications and announcements and for the awards presentation ceremony:

    One poster (30x40) for display at the 2014 NCSEA Annual Conference. Credits that must be noted for all photographs

    All entries must be received at the NCSEA office by 4:00 p.m. CDT on Friday, July 11, 2014. Entries shouldbe sent to:

    NOTIFICATION OF AWARD

    Winners will be notified in writing after selection by the Jury of Awards.

    PRESENTATION OF AWARDS

    The awards will be presented at the NCSEA Annual Conference Awards Banquet at the Astor Crown Plaza inNew Orleans, Louisiana on Friday, September 19, 2014. A representative must be present at the banquet inorder to win the award and be featured in a future issue of STRUCTUREmagazine.

    OWNERSHIP AND PUBLICATION OF ENTRIES

    All entries become the property of NCSEA and will not be returned. NCSEA reserves the right to use orpublish entries and accompanying materials in STRUCTUREmagazine or other publications. By entering, theentrant grants a royalty-free license to NCSEA to use any copyrighted material submitted.
