On October 4, Christo-pher Eugene Russell re-ceived his sentencing afterbeing found guilty of Sec-ond Degree Murder, andAggravated Child Abuse inthe death of his 3 monthold son, Colin Russell. Ac-cording to Court docu-ments obtained by MarionCounty Newspapers, Rus-sell was sentenced byJudge Thomas W. Grahamto 25 years in prison fortwo Class A felonies: First-Degree Murder and Aggra-vated Child Abuse.According to the judge-ment, “the defendant, hav-ing been found guilty, isrendered infamous and or-dered to provide a biologi-cal specimen for thepurpose of DNA analysis.”The story behind this

sentencing began on Satur-day June 23, 2012, afterRussell’s son died of“major trauma to thebrain.” In a previous articlepublished in the JasperJournal on July 3, 2012,Sheriff Ronnie “Bo” Bur-nett explained that the in-fant had stopped breathingand an ambulance wascalled to take baby Colin toGrandview Medical Cen-

ter, now Parkridge West. From there, the child wastransferred to VanderbiltHospital in Nashville.”Burnett stated the doctorsat Grandview Hospitalcontacted authorities, andthat Russell was being re-viewed, at that time, as a“person of interest.”During the investigation,

the sheriff’s departmentfound enough evidenceagainst Russell to chargewas a discussion of theevent that ensued on thathorrific day in 2012. Therewas a testimony by ChildAbuse Pediatrician Spe-cialist, Dr. DeborahLowen. She was a part ofthe team treating Colin atVanderbilt Children’s Hos-pital. During her testimony, she was asked by District

Attorney Steve Strain, ifshe could label how severethis case really was. Lowenstated, “It resulted inColin’s death and it doesn’tget anymore severe thanthat.” “Dr. Bridget Eutenier,

who perform the autopsyin 2012, listed the cause ofdeath as a homicide. In thetwelve-page autopsy re-port, it notes contusions onthe child’s head, injuriesthat included blood clottingin several areas of hisbrain, and extensive hem-orrhaging in the opticnerves of both eyes. Theautopsy further noted atleast 15 fractures of the in-fant’s ribs and a fracturedright clavicle, along with aligament injury on hisspine.
