Okay, so you have read about how great Doncaster is and are now considering an apprenticeship here at Doncaster Council, but what do we offer?

Times have changed. The apprenticeship world has shifted with the Government reforms that came into effect in May 2017. This has presented us with greater opportunities for service development, enabling to support both new and existing staff. We now have much more flexibility in the apprenticeships that we can deliver and fund. The power is in our hands as an employer.

We have seen new and exciting opportunities for staff to progress and for new recruits to start their journeys with us on apprenticeships including higher degree, professional and new employer led Standards (Trailblazers). This means more progression opportunities and a wider range of apprenticeship that continue to be on offer!

Apprenticeships are not restricted by age and some of the higher level opportunities are shaped to meet both our current and future organisational needs.Check out our jobs site to keep an eye on what’s on offer here at Doncaster Council.

opinion, I am in a much more beneficial situation now, than I would’ve been if I’d have stayed at college.

Young people are often told that university is the best and only option for high achievers or for anyone for that matter – I was also told this multiple times throughout my school career. However, now that I have experienced an apprenticeship, I completely disagree.

Most importantly, my apprenticeship has enabled me to spread my name around the council and build a reputation among staff and other apprentices.I am hoping to obtain a full time, permanent position here at the council before or after my apprenticeship ends – hopefully either in Procurement or Financial Management.”

Sam “I started my apprenticeship in September 2017. After finishing the 1st year of A levels, I decided that A levels simply weren’t for me. I wanted to use my maths skills in the real world and not in theoretical functions/scenarios that the A level course provided.I decided AAT would be the best option, as my dad was, at the time, an Associate Director in regards to Clinical Contract Commissioning, so I would follow in his footsteps almost.

I applied for the opportunity to experience the different sectors of finance within the council, as I felt it was an excellent ‘step ladder’ into the world of work.

I primarily chose an apprenticeship due to their ability to combine education with experience; in my

We have really diversified what we offer and here is a great example:

Our very first degree level apprenticeship was launched in September 2017 and we saw our first 2 degree apprentices join our Strategy and Performance Unit.

The Chartered Management degree level apprenticeship includes a combination of work based learning and business education which leads to a BA Hons Professional Practice in Management and professional recognition through the award of Chartered Management status (CMgr MCMI).

Read their journey below:

“This type of apprenticeship is great due to being able to gain theoretical understanding from the degree whilst being able to automatically transfer this to real-world scenarios.

I am enjoying the mixture between learning again and working. I have really had to hone in on my time management skills to successfully juggle work and university commitments. I am also starting to get involved in the Integrated Town Centre team, where as a collective we are looking to improve Doncaster as a town and show that it is a great place to work, live and visit.

I would most definitely encourage you to apply, if you think this is the option for you.”

Helen“I chose to do this Apprenticeship because it seemed like the best option for me. The reason for this is because I was previously completing an Accounting and Finance Degree, however this qualification didn’t provide me with the opportunity to apply my learning into a workplace environment. This apprenticeship, on the other hand, does allow me to apply my knowledge. Because of this, my apprenticeship allows for a more well-rounded learning experience compared to just learning the theory without knowing how to apply it.”

I enjoy my role within the team, I feel that I am given different tasks to complete which helps me to get an understanding of different software systems that are used by the team. I also enjoy being out on site as it gives me more knowledge on what I need to know about drainage and flood risks.

Doncaster Council’s Apprentice Network was set up in 2017, run by apprentices for all new, existing and previous apprentices employed by the Council. The Network is open to all apprentices who wish to be a part of a group that promotes the role of the apprentice and gives its members the opportunity to be involved in projects and events that can provide development opportunities.

The main aims of the Apprentice Network are to:

• Offer apprentices unique experiences to manage and support projects, further improving their future employment opportunities;

• Promote the variety of roles that apprentices undertake within the Council and to improve the perception of what an apprentice does and can do;

• Encourage apprentices to meet and work with each other across the Council, providing an opportunity to make new contacts and friends, to share knowledge and experiences, and to support to each other.

We are wanting to be able to have a Network that is primarily there for support and making connections in the working environment whilst also having the opportunity to become involved in activities and events that can boost our future employability.

As part of establishing and promoting the Apprentice Network, all involved worked to organise a Christmas Charity event with proceeds being split between Alzheimer’s UK (Doncaster) and the Children’s Ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. With the main event being held on Monday 11th December last year we arranged a bake sale, quiz and raffle. Overall we totalled to just shy of £1,400.

Megan from the Apprenticeship Network said:

“I think the best thing about having an apprenticeship with Doncaster Council is having the chance to earn while you learn as well as having so many further opportunities like work experience and work shadowing in other teams to be able to get a feel for what is also on offer throughout Doncaster.

You are able to share your thoughts and ideas in tasks that you may be involved in. I have been able to use my knowledge to enhance projects in my team and the outcome is always very rewarding.

Doing an apprenticeship gives you the chance to explore what you are interested in and the path you want to follow in the future.

I decided to do an apprenticeship because I had no desire to go to Uni but wanted to enhance my learning. I also wasn’t sure what career path I wanted to take so undertaking a Business Admin Apprenticeship gave me a good starting point. I have benefitted from this as I have gained many skills and improved the skills I already have, I also have the best experience of working life and what it is really like to work in an office based environment.

I hope to gain a full time job within the council, doing something similar to my apprenticeship as I would like to experience a different level of what I already do. I would also have aspirations to work in either IT or a creative team as they are subjects that I am very interested in.”

Jake “I wanted to do an apprenticeship in Highways because for me it is more hands on. I learn a lot quicker by doing, rather than just sitting in a classroom. I also get paid whilst learning which helped me buy and run a car; this then allowed me to go onto the Winter Gritting I think for some people who like doing practical things it is a better option than sixth form or full time college. The council is also willing to train you to a high standard and you get a lot of support whilst training.

My hopes for the future are I would like to keep learning new skills and improve the ones I have. Someday I hope to pass my Light Goods Vehicle licence, become a Charge Hand and one day become a Highways Supervisor.”

John “I was at college doing a Highways Course Level 1 and wanted to continue my studies in that area so an apprenticeship seemed the right choice for me. I like the mix of both academic and practical parts of my learning. The best thing about doing an apprenticeship at Doncaster Council is learning a worthwhile trade whilst getting paid, meeting new and interesting people and making new friends. The council are also very good at ensuring I have everything I need to do my job, from tools and equipment to the right clothing.

I hope at the end of my apprenticeship to get a full time job repairing and constructing the roads of Doncaster. If I achieve this goal I would like to keep learning new skills through on the job training and other courses. One day I would like to progress to the position of Mason. I would hope to work on some of the larger construction projects in the future.”

Trish Wood“I have worked for the Council for almost 18 years in a variety of roles. I started as a part time Typist in the Planning Department, working my way up to Personal Assistant to the Director of Policy, Partnerships and Governance. In 2008 I decided on a career change and joined the Success Doncaster team in delivering a multi-million pound work, skills and enterprise programme; my last role being Enterprise Co-ordinator, contract managing a £337k enterprise programme.

Over the years, I have been encouraged by my Managers to undertake as much learning as possible. The most significant has been the widely recognised Prince 2 Practitioner Project Management Certificate and also an NVQ Level 3 qualification in Business and Administration. I have also done the Council’s Management Development Programme which I completed in June 2016.

In September last year I decided on another career change. I applied for the role of Contracts

Officer with the Adults, Health and Wellbeing Contracts Team and was successful! This is an area I have never worked in before but decided the challenge would be a great opportunity for me. I am now starting another qualification which leads to the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply. This is a 2 year apprenticeship which is fully funded by the Council and will provide me with key procurement skills in order to support Commissioners in buying essential services, attaining best value for money, managing supply chain risk and enabling the Council to deliver better services for adults.

I couldn’t have got this far without taking advantage of all the learning opportunities I have been given over the years which have allowed me to progress my career and obviously, increase my earning potential!

All I can say, is go for it, you won’t regret it!”

CareerProgression

Apprenticeships can give you a real advantage when it comes to employability. The experiences and skills you gain alongside your qualification are extremely appealing to employers.

Our apprentices have been very successful in securing employment both in and outside of the Council. There are potential progression opportunities, moving from a Level 2 (Intermediate Apprenticeship) onto a Level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeship) and access to further development and training if you secure employment in the council.

We offer apprenticeships at Levels 2 to 7, and if a team needs something new we source a training provider to deliver it.

As an employer of choice we invest in the development of people. Many of our employees go through Leadership and Management Development qualifications. Staff can undertake a Level 3 or 5 apprenticeship in Management and Leadership.

An extensive amount of our mandatory and core council learning is delivered via the award winning Learning Zone and as an apprentice you would benefit from accessing training via the interactive platform. Doncaster Council’s Learning Zone won the Learning Pool Live Regional Organisation of the year North 2014 and provides a range of interactive modules to staff and partner organisations. E-learning is a quick, efficient way of learning that can be carried out at your own pace and accessed via PCs, tablets and mobile phones.

Plenty of our training is still delivered in the classroom and there really is so much on offer from manual handling to project management.

What can it lead to?You’ve read a number of our apprentices’ stories throughout this prospectus, telling you what their apprenticeship has done for them.

The opportunities for career progression are vast. Read on to find out more about the career journeys of some of our employees who started out as apprentices.

“After my first year in sixth form I knew university wasn’t for me. I started looking into apprenticeships and discovered that Doncaster Council have so many amazing opportunities for their trainees and apprentices. The application process was simple and I felt I was well supported throughout.

I started as an apprentice in the Organisational Development team within Finance & Corporate Services and within 5 months of doing so secured a temporary position within Human Resources team as a HR & OD Assistant. I also continued to do my Level 2 qualification in Business Administration which I have now completed. After completion and my job contract came to an end I secured a permanent position within the Planning Service and I am now part way though my Level 3 qualification and looking at possible options for service specific training and qualifications to enable me to progress further in my career. Every day is different and varied which has given me a wide range of experience so far and I am still learning every day.

As an apprentice with Doncaster Council, there is so much support available to help with your qualification not only from your assessor but from managers and other colleagues too.

I definitely made the right decision leaving sixth form and I have never looked back.”

“I decided to do an apprenticeship because to be honest I was fed up of classrooms by the end of my A levels and even though I wanted to carry on learning, I wanted to do it in a work based environment with a hands on job.

I initially had a plumbing apprenticeship through a private company however despite enjoying the job I wasn’t happy with the company and had always wanted to work for the council. After finishing Level 2 plumbing apprenticeship I gained a 4 year apprenticeship with Doncaster Council in Heating and Ventilation which I completed in July 2013.

When starting my apprenticeship I was nervous but excited. I loved being on site, meeting new people, learning new skills and my apprenticeship helped me build my confidence. The best thing about doing an apprenticeship through the council is the support and training they provide.

I have now been with the council nearly 9 years and have a permanent position as Mechanical Production Manager. I am just about to start a Management Level 5 course so there are always opportunities to keep on learning after your apprenticeship.”

“When I left sixth form, I needed a job, so started working in a commercial butchers. The money was OK, but after a while I knew it was not what I wanted to do forever - so I decided to look for something with better development and training opportunities. I applied for a Level 2 apprenticeship in Business Admin, Customer Services and IT at Doncaster Council. I went for the interview and was successful. And I’ve never looked back! I started working in the Economic Development Department at Doncaster Council almost 20 years ago, doing Business Administration. I sat near to the Major Projects Team. Their job seemed very interesting, so I asked if I could work closer with them and do their admin. Over time, I learned more about what they did, and they gave me more opportunities to work with them on the construction projects side of things. They were really supportive in developing my skills. A post within this team became available so I applied and became an Economic Development Technician – this was the start of me being able to get involved with major projects. As a junior member of the team I was able to help out with the development of Lakeside. The team were responsible for the creation of the lake, new roads, land remediation, the housing, business and leisure developments, as well as the Railport and Doncaster Carr. Their work delivered Lakeside as we see it today - creating thousands of jobs and hundreds of homes... and I learned a lot. The Council have continued to support my development by sending me to college to gain formal qualifications. Over the years, as my skills and experience have grown, I have been promoted and am now a Construction Project Manager and manage a team of Project Managers. Over the years I have been involved in some exciting projects, including;• The new Civic Quarter, including project managing

the explosive demolition of the Council House, and the design and build of the Council Civic Offices, Gresley Square and the new roads around the area

• Doncaster Lakeside, including negotiating the disposal of land for housing and commercial developments, and also bringing in a new large

electrical supply to serve the area• Project managing the delivery of the Waste Transfer

Station at Kirk Sandall• Fitting out several areas of the Keepmoat Stadium

including the sports bar and gym.• Master planning of the Belle Vue site for residential

purposes I am currently working on the;• Refurbishment of the Wool Market and extension to the markets car park• Refurbishment of Colonnades Offices and Shopping

Centre• New Library, Museum and Art Gallery building on

the former girls school site on Chequer Road The best part of my role is the people I work with. Every day I get to work with dedicated people from across the Council in with a wide range of teams – and with these people, we pull together to overcome all types of issues and challenges to deliver some of the most prestigious projects in the Borough. I really love being part of that, and having something tangible to show for all of our hard work. I would definitely recommend doing an apprenticeship, especially at Doncaster Council, as there are so many different work areas and job types – something to suit everyone - and you can make a real difference for the people of Doncaster.”
