The Harper’s Playground model is simple: Radically inclusive play through several layers of inviting design.
we are building a more inclusive world,
one playground at a time.
Physically InvitingIs it accessible? And is it adaptive? Universal accessibility ensures that everybody can get everywhere and to everything. Adaptability means everything is designed to suit different conditions or needs.
Socially InvitingIs it natural? Is it communal? Nature provides a calming effect on our mental and physical health, reducing fear, stress and anger. Open, communal spaces allow people to gather, connect and share.
Emotionally InvitingIs it thoughtful? Is it beautiful? Humans are impacted by their surroundings. Small, thoughtful details that provide comfort and delight the senses have a positive effect on a person’s wellbeing.

About Vancouver Parks and Recreation
Thanks to a $500,000 pledge from an anonymous donor, Marshall Park is on track to become Southwest Washington’s premiere fully inclusive playground.
Vancouver Parks and Recreation builds upon the City’s strong legacy of parks, natural areas and recreation dating back to the dedication of Esther Short Park in 1853. Each month, the Parks and Recreation Department provides hundreds of recreation opportunities for youth, adults, seniors and persons with disabilities at its two community centers. Parks and Recreation operates 1,600 acres of parkland at 113 sites, including 90 parks, 20 miles of trails and many natural areas for the City of Vancouver. The Parks and Recreation Department cultivates community in the City and beyond through on-going special events and volunteer programs that celebrate the City’s natural spaces. Learn more at www.vanparksrec.org.
“WearecommittedtomakingVancouverparkswelcomingspaceswhereallmembersofourcommunitycanbuildconnectionswithneighborsandnature.CreatingradicallyinclusiveplayspaceswiththesupportofHarper’sPlaygroundisanimportantstepforourcommunity.”

The signature Harper’s Playground Hill
Oursignaturehillisanincrediblypopularfeature.
Like most of our design, the simple form allows for the greatest variety of play for the widest variety of players. It is a wonder to behold, rough and tumble play alongside imagination play. Kids in wheelchairs cruise alongside kids on scooters. It is as fun for a parent and child to play together as it is for a group of kids to slide on cardboard they’ve brought from home. Unlike typical structures, our hill also makes for a great location to sled on in the wintertime, too.”

Unique feature Chelsea Anderson Memorial
The structure that exists currently at Marshall Park was dedicated to the memory of Chelsea Anderson. This special project was a labor of love, and we are honoring that history with a firefighter theme throughout the entire playground as well as with a special tribute area for the preserved Chelsea Anderson Memorial features. In addition, we will be adding a very special custom Fire Truck feature as well.
