AUGUST 2017 Greetings Booker Middle! We welcome you back to another great year and hope that you are full of energy and enthusiasm for what is sure to be a fantastic year at Booker Middle. I would especially like to say a welcome to all the new families and new staff members. We hope that you will have a wonderful experience at Booker Middle School. The first day of school marks the beginning of a journey that will take you through the school year, which is an opportunity to learn new things, meet new people, and to have new experiences. My message to students is simple: treat every day in your life like it is the most important day. Together we will create a safe and respectful learning community. This year is going to be "Great" as we continue to provide academic experiences for our students. Experiences that will allow them to be College and Career Ready. As your principal, it is important to me that everyone who steps through our doors, staff, students, and parents are excited to be here! This attitude enables us to meet the challenges of academic excellence in a positive, fun and nurturing environment. Our theme for the 2017-2018 school year is "Know thy Impact." Dictionary.com defines Impact as a "to have an impact or effect on; influence; alter. " Our goal is to impact each family. Each parent is the personal cheerleader for his or her child. However, we will work collectively to ensure that we are working Every Day, for Every Child, by doing whatever it takes. It is imperative that our learning community embraces the idea of doing whatever it takes to ensure the academic growth of our students. Every year we invite our parents, indeed, urge them, to volunteer at the school. Being a part of your student’s middle school career is educationally profitable and will assist us in making an impact. It is important that we get to know each other and learn to work together. I trust that this school year will be a rewarding and memorable experience for you and your student. On behalf of administration, we wish each of you a pleasant and productive school year! If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact a Tornado Team member at (941) 359- 5824. I am looking forward to working with you this school year. AUGUST 2017

Greetings Booker Middle! We welcome you back to another great year and hope that you are full of energy and enthusiasm

for what is sure to be a fantastic year at Booker Middle. I would especially like to say a welcome to all the

new families and new staff members. We hope that you will have a wonderful experience at Booker Middle School.

The first day of school marks the beginning of a journey that will take you through the school

year, which is an opportunity to learn new things, meet new people, and to have new experiences. My message to students is simple: treat every day in your life like it is the most important day. Together we

will create a safe and respectful learning community. This year is going to be "Great" as we continue to provide academic experiences for our students.

Experiences that will allow them to be College and Career Ready. As your principal, it is important to me

that everyone who steps through our doors, staff, students, and parents are excited to be here! This attitude enables us to meet the challenges of academic excellence in a positive, fun and nurturing

environment. Our theme for the 2017-2018 school year is "Know thy Impact." Dictionary.com defines

Impact as a "to have an impact or effect on; influence; alter. " Our goal is to impact each family. Each parent is the personal cheerleader for his or her child. However, we will work collectively to ensure that

we are working Every Day, for Every Child, by doing whatever it takes. It is imperative that our learning community embraces the idea of doing whatever it takes to ensure the academic growth of our students.

Every year we invite our parents, indeed, urge them, to volunteer at the school. Being a part of

your student’s middle school career is educationally profitable and will assist us in making an impact. It is important that we get to know each other and learn to work together. I trust that this school year will

be a rewarding and memorable experience for you and your student. On behalf of administration, we wish each of you a pleasant and productive school year! If you

have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact a Tornado Team member at (941) 359-

Sincerely,

Dr. LaShawn Frost, Principal

of the academic strategies we are focusing on

to ensure that our students excel!

Guidance Corner Words of wisdom each month from our

guidance counselor team!

We Appreciate You… Each month we will highlight a faculty

member who is going above and beyond!

Coach’s Corner A word from our athletic director or one

Hello Parents, Students, and Friends of Booker Middle School,

Welcome to the 2017/2018 school year and welcome to our new newsletter. This puppy is packed with all kinds of information and goodies for you to enjoy! The new format was created with

several goals in mind:

Keeping you abreast of what is coming up so you never miss a meeting, performance, or event.

Showing you some the fun and exciting things are students are participating in.

Recognizing some of our students who are doing exceptional work both inside

and outside of the classroom.

Highlighting our unbelievably supportive business and community partners.

Engaging you in our enthusiastic culture of academics, athletics, and art!

Newsletters will typically come out on the first Friday of the month and can be found on Peachjar

(for parents), on our school and VPA websites, or you can register for the newsletter by emailing me directly (see email below). This first edition is meant to be your guide to subsequent newsletters. It is

meant to explain what we will bring you going forward and help you understand the format. Look for the yellow arrows this month. They will point you toward important explanations!

Keep in mind that while we are proud of the work our faculty has done to bring you this

newsletter, nothing is set in stone. Please, let us know your ideas and feedback via the email address below (subject: newsletter). We would LOVE to know what you think! Thank you so much for all your

support of and enthusiasm for our wonderful school.

All My Best,

VPA Student’s

Artist of the Month

Each month the student chosen for our VPA Spotlight will choose an Artist of

the Month. This is an artist that they may or may not be studying whose work

inspires them. It will include a brief bio of that artist and their work. It’s a great

way to find out what our students are interested in and maybe even learn

something new!

This area is reserved for a VPA student who has

demonstrated great effort and a good attitude in their

classroom. These students are chosen by the VPA team and

set an example of good behavior and strong work ethic.

Dr. Frost Community Hero Congratulations to Dr. Frost named United Way’s Community

Hero! As if that wasn’t enough, she was also chosen to be Sarasota Rotary Club’s 2017 Citizen of the Year. We are so proud of our wonderfully talented and dedicated principal. Can’t

wait to see what exciting things she will bring to our campus and community this year!

Summer Transition Program

Congratulations to all of our fantastic students, teachers, and

administrators who made this year’s Summer Transition Program a

huge success. A special thank you to Kay Daniels, the head of the

program. That program has become the success that it is because of

you! Also thank you to Shelly Dorfman and Margie Silver for their

sports and arts integrated program which was featured in the

Herald-Tribune on July 27th.

ReWards Sports Enhancement Program This program is run by Coach Ward (previously of Riverview High School).

The vision of this after school enhancement program is to create a school-

to-community relationship between BMS and Athletic Leagues. The goal is

to provide all BMS students an opportunity to reach their highest potential

and become the BEST that they can be. Their very first speaker will be

Mrs. Helisa Goddard from Fifth Third Bank and the subject will be Money

Management/ Banking/Accounts/ and we are going to give our students a

chance to open their very own savings accounts.

College and Career Readiness Program Booker Middle School students will spend time each week sharpening

personal skills and building greater understanding of their goals by

participating in focused exercises with Naviance. As students progress

through the curriculum, they’ll have opportunities to explore

educational plans as well as careers they may have not yet considered

based on their interests and strengths. Our goal is to empower students

to explore their goals and future during a critical period of personal and

academic development. For more information, contact newly selected

Career Advisor Nicholas Termine

Parent University: We know your child’s education and development is important to you

and that you would like to encourage them in any way you can. Our

monthly Parent University will give you some tools and strategies to best

support their Booker Middle School education. (see dates in the “Calendars” section) Parent Involvement: Our parents are the lifeblood of our school’s support network. Each

month our parents and faculty meet to discuss the activities associated with our school’s fundraising efforts. (see dates in the “Calendars” section)

SAC (School Advisory Council): A formal monthly meeting where parents and community members meet

with our principal and other administrators to collaborate on school issues. (see dates in the “Calendars” section)

VPA Booster Club: Our Visual and Performing Arts Magnet students participate in a

number of events and activities both on and away from our campus. Our VPA Booster is designed to help our parents get involved and support

performances, activities, and field trips.

Donate: Donations come in many forms and we appreciate all of them. Email

Savannah Holds ([email protected]) for information on BMS Arts Giving. For information regarding donations to

our other programs email Debra Alvis-Greenwald ([email protected]).

Volunteer: BMS can always use a helping hand. If you would like to donate your

time to our wonderful school, come to the front office of our school and sign up or contact Debra Alvis-Greenwald.

Attend: There are so many events for our students and it means the world to our

students when the attendance and support goes beyond their friends and family. Attend an arts event, a sports event, or just come out to a Family

Night with one of our business partners (see dates in the “Calendars” section).

This is where we take a second to thank those people who have gone the extra mile to support Booker Middle School. So, how does one get featured here? I’m so glad you asked! Check out the next few pages for

information on getting involved and making an impact!
