As the leading advocate for eliminating domestic violence in northern Illinois for the past 41 years, A Safe Place is dedicated to saving and transforming the lives of domestic violence victims and their children.

A Safe Place provides services for survivors throughout the entire journey of healing,

including a 24-hour crisis line, on call crisis response, case management, legal advocacy, emergency shelter, individual and family art and group therapy, transitional and permanent housing, advocacy, outreach and supportive services, mentoring for adolescent boys, supervised custody exchanges and family visitations, education for teens on healthy relationships, community education, and intervention services for abusers to learn accountability for their choices and actions.

A Safe Place moved into the Gorton Center and hosted an open house in June of 2018, reaching capacity within two weeks of

the event, and has since made an incredible impact on the lives of countless individuals and survivors. Nancy Dunsey, the Director of Southern Lake County Services, has a comforting, feels-like-home space for clients to receive the support that they need – “we have loved being a part of the Gorton Center, which is a thriving community building and one where survivors can come and receive services without fear.”

It is our goal that by learning more about domestic violence, its causes, and appropriate responses, we can encourage a whole-community response to the domestic violence in our midst, breaking the cycle of domestic violence, thus creating safe and healthy communities.
