Educational Talent Search (ETS) is 100% funded by the U.S. Department of Education. It is one of

the seven outreach and support programs under the TRIO umbrella that assists low-income and/or

first-generation college students to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to

post-baccalaureate programs. The purpose of the program is to reinforce the school system’s efforts

in assisting students to reach their academic potential, graduate from high school, and ultimately

enroll in a post-secondary institution of their choice. There are 31 Talent Search Programs in Texas

serving more than 22,000 students.

Educational Talent Search is a federally funded

early intervention program that identifies and

assists students from populations traditionally

underrepresented in post-secondary education

(i.e.: first-generation and low-income students) in

grades six through 12. This concentrated effort is

designed to help disadvantaged students who

have the potential to succeed in higher education

better understand their educational opportunities

and options.

In addition to personalized advising, participants

receive information about college admissions

requirements, scholarships and various student

financial aid programs. We encourage them to

graduate from high school and continue on to the

postsecondary institution of their choice.

It gives me great pleasure to report that the ETS program has successfully

completed and submitted its outcome results to the U.S. Department of

Education for the school year 2011-2012. The ETS program is funded to serve

826 participants of which two- thirds of the students served must be identified

as both low-income and potential first generation (LIFG) students. The

program was successful in identifying more than 96% of its participants as

LIFG, and was successful recruiting and serving 812 participants for the

academic year. Of the 812 participants served during the 2011-2012 academic

year, 652 were identified as non-senior (6-11th graders) participants. Of the

652 participants, 620 (95%) were promoted to the next grade level in middle or

high school and 4 (less than 1%) were retained in their current grade.

Additionally, there were 27 (4%) students who were unable to be tracked. Of

the 812 participants served by ETS during this time, 160 were high school

seniors. Ninety-eight percent (157) of the senior participants successfully

graduated from high school with the additional 2% (3) not graduating due to

not passing the state mandated exit level TAKS test. Eighty-eight percent (138)

of the graduating senior participants completed their high school curriculum on

the distinguished and recommended graduation plan. Additionally, 123 (80%)

of the 160 seniors participants enrolled in an institution of postsecondary

education (college) in the fall semester of 2012.

As stated in our fall newsletter ETS will continue our efforts to improve our

communication with you. In April 2013 each parent will receive the ETS

Program Annual Satisfactory Survey, via email, mail or online survey tool. We

ask that you provide us with your honest feedback on “how satisfied” you are

with the ETS program and its services. Sincerely,

Rachael Weldon-Caron

Funding Cuts:

On March 1, 2013, the

across-the-board cuts known

as sequestration went into

effect, which equals a $42

million funding cut to TRIO.

This will impact our funding

for program year 2013-2014.

We anticipate our

institution’s TRIO grants

will be reduced by 5% for

the current awards.

Educational Talent Search

will lose over $18,000 in

funding.
