Del Rio—Uvalde Baptist Association The local Baptist association is very much a part of Southern Baptist life. In fact, most Southern Baptist churches are members of a local Baptist association. Next to the local church, the Baptist association is the oldest expression of Baptist life. Our Association, the Del-Rio Uvalde Baptist Association, is blessed with forty-four affiliated churches. From its inception, the association has served several fundamental purposes. Although there may be other things that characterize some associations, there seems to be four purposes that stand out as we look at the nature and function of Baptist associations. These four are (1) joining together for fellowship; (2) the provision of a primary support system for the work and ministry of local churches and their pastors; (3) uniting forces for missions and evangelism; and (4) helping churches maintain doctrinal integrity. DRUBA has adopted a mission statement that gives guidance for all that we do as an association and enables us to carry out these four general purposes of an association: Working Together for the Growth of the Kingdom of God”. Five priorities have been established to enable us to accomplish our declared mission. Our five priorities are (1) Prayer, (2) Fellowship, (3) Missions and Evangelism, (4) Church Health, and (5) Leadership Development. Much remains to be done in order to fulfill these important priorities, but I am happy to say that there are some exciting things happening within the context of our Association. Del Rio—Uvalde Baptist Association

The local Baptist association is very much a part of Southern Baptist life.

DRUBA has adopted a mission statement that gives guidance for all that we do as an association and enables us to carry out these four general purposes of an association: “Working Together for the Growth of the Kingdom of God”.

February 17th the DRUBA family gathered at First Baptist Church in

Uvalde for the annual Praise Service. 164 people from thirteen churches came together to enjoy wonderful music and a pot-luck supper. Our Fellowship is strengthened when we come together as an associational family. January 26

th we participated in a workshop “Strengthening the

Small Church” at Baptist Temple Church in Uvalde. February 23rd

the same basic workshop was presented in Spanish for our Hispanic churches at Primera Iglesia Bautista in Eagle Pass. Eighty people from twenty-one churches participated in these two workshops. The priorities of Church Health and Leadership Development were reinforced through these workshops. March 21-23 our annual Pastor’s and Staff Prayer Re-treat will be held at Alto Frio Baptist Encampment. The Prayer Priority will be undergirded as ministers pray together and are encouraged in their own prayer lives.

Larner Trip to Peru

Beth and I were privileged to serve as missionaries in Latin America for 31 ½ years. We lived our last five years in Lima, Peru and had the joy to travel and work in different parts of the country. June 3-17 we will be returning to Peru for two weeks of ministry. During that time, we will be in Lima and also Iquitos which is located in the northern Amazon Basin. In Iquitos we will be guiding a one day Missions Conference and leading a Conference on the Family during the celebration of the fifth anniversary of one of the Baptist churches in Iquitos. The second week will be spent in Lima where we will be involved in visiting pastors and churches to encourage and strengthen the training and sending of Peruvian missionaries beyond the borders of the country. During the time we are in Peru Beth and I will be investigating possible ways our Association can be involved in ministry in Peru. Please pray for us as we prepare for the trip and as we return to minister among our beloved Peruvian brothers and sisters.

If you would like to make a financial contribution to help Tommy and Beth with expenses on this trip, you can send a check in care of the Del Rio-Uvalde Baptist Association, 117 E Commerce St., Uvalde, TX 78801. This is not a tax deductible gift, please note on check if it is for them.
