Welcome to our Spring edition 2018.

This edition features many of our very talented old collegians and their successful careers and pathways they have travelled since leaving Monivae.

It has been the season of reunions and Monivae old collegians support the reunions very well. This year there are six official reunions, (1, 10,20,30,40 & 50-year reunions). Five reunions have already taken place and the One Year Reunion will be held a the Chevalier Centre on the eve of Dunkeld Races, Friday 16th November. This year there has also been an increase in many mid-decade get-togethers.

We are happy to assist with encouraging any mid-decade reunions on our very popular Facebook and Instagram pages. Please keep us informed as well of any milestones we can promote. We are always happy to receive emails regarding births, marriages and farewells.

Principal’s Message

Many would have heard by now of the passing of Brother Dan Geary MSC in June. Br Dan

worked at Monivae from 1985 until early 2010. During those 25 years, he had an enormous impact on so many people here at the College. The large numbers at the Memorial Mass here in the Monivae Chapel and those present at his funeral along with the huge response to our social media post, indicated the very high regard that Br Dan was held in this community. A self-confessed ‘simple man’, Dan had great faith and knew very well the importance of everyone appreciating God’s unconditional love for each one of us. We can all learn so much from the kindness and compassion exhibited by his devotion to the simplest of tasks like the writing of birthday cards for so many students As the longest-serving MSC at Monivae, a record very unlikely to be broken, Br Dan is an historic figure here at Monivae and one who will long live in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him.

Fr Peter Wood MSC who has resided at Monivae for the last three and a half years also passed away after a brief illness in late August while relieving in Apollo Bay parish. Fr Peter, while not officially appointed to work at the College, would help out wherever possible often presiding at the College’s weekly Tuesday morning mass. Fr Peter’s humble and gentle manner along with his wise counsel were very much appreciated by the staff here at Monivae.

Our Girls Senior and Intermediate Netball teams both won through to the State Finals and performed quite creditably finishing in the top half dozen schools in their respective competitions. Considering they were competing against some schools with an enrolment of over 3000 students this was quite an achievement. Our Clay Target Shooting team has also had considerable success this year winning a number of events.

In July this year, Mrs Sabrina Watt stepped down as Chair of the Monivae College Board. Sabrina has worked tirelessly for the last five and a half years in this role and is to be commended for the wonderful work she has done in this time. Sabrina’s warmth, personable nature and efficiency have been ideal attributes during this period of significant growth in the College. Mrs Helen Morrison has graciously accepted the request from the Provincial, Fr Chris McPhee MSC, to take up the position as Chair of the College Board.

Mark McGinni tyPrincipal

Our students continue to excel in a range of sporting endeavours with the Senior Boys’ Football winning the Herald Sun Country Cup with less than a handful of goals scored against them in the entire knockout competition.

Following a conversation with Monash medical student, Zak Doherty, you realise his passion

and drive to succeed is all in a days work. Zak (class of 2014), is undertaking his Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (Honours). Zak is currently undertaking the research year of his degree based in Bendigo and will graduate in 2020.

Alongside Zak’s obvious passion for his chosen career path, is Zak’s flair for tutoring and passing on some of his valuable knowledge on how best to succeed. Throughout Zak’s research year based in the Bendigo Monash University, he has been volunteering in the evenings tutoring the 3rd year medical students. This has been not only valuable for the students that Zak is tutoring, but also as revision for some of Zak’s upcoming exams.”At the end of next year, we have an exam which is based on our Year 3 and 4 content, by tutoring it allows me to revise my year 3 content, so it works both ways”, commented Zak.

When asked about some advice for year 12 students thinking about a career in medicine, Zak remarked, “ I would say work hard, in terms of an effective investment of your time, especially from the point of view of medicine, you are better off to work really hard in year 12 and get into your course, as opposed to working moderately

hard and not get in and then have to do a 3 year Science degree where you work really hard”. Zak also stressed the importance of practice exams, it’s equally important to know how to approach the topic questions as it is in knowing the content.

Zak has aspirations to be an Intensive Care Doctor and care for flight retrieval patients for Ambulance Victoria, caring for patients when they are transported by helicopter. He also finds research very interesting and commented. “I really like research, so I would also like to do Clinical Medicine and research”.

There is no doubt Zak’s commitment and hard work will certainly pay off with a fulfilling and distinguished career in the medical profession. Zak’s work ethic and willingness to help others is certainly very evident. Monivae College congratulates Zak and wishes him all the best for his coming years in his chosen profession.

Zak’s Hard Work Pays Off

Work hard, in terms of an effective investment of your time, especially from the point of view of medicine, you are better off to work really hard in year 12 and get into your course, as opposed to working moderately hard and not get in and then have to do a 3 year Science degree where you work really hard”

Blazer Challenge StoryThe ‘Jaffa McGaffin’, Memorial Blazer

Challenge’ is an annual get together of some good mates from Monivae College from the class of 1990. The group consists of Trevor Ryan, Pat Kenny, Craig Jervies, Brett Cutler and Nathan McLaren. They have gathered in various destinations for a weekend of fun and competition in Echuca, Barwon Heads, Adelaide, Geelong, Gold Coast and Melbourne in the past.

Following a chat with the group here is some more information about the Blazer Challenge:

How many years has the Blazer Challenge been running and how did the idea come about?

“We had been friends at Gray St Primary School in Hamilton and then at Monivae College. After a few infrequent get-togethers, we decided that the first edition of the challenge was to be held in 2010 at Rich River in Echuca. It started as a golf weekend and we decided to compete for something over the weekend, and that’s where the idea of the Blazer Challenge was born. We had a great time and decided to attempt to make an annual event of it.”

“As old Monivae friends, it is a chance for the five of us to catch up away from the usual work and family commitments. We try to make it an annual event, but it can be hard to all get together every year with other commitments and being so disorganised”.

What sports or activities happen to win the Blazer Challenge?

“Activities have ranged from tennis, ten pin bowling, golf, lawn bowls, go-carting, mini golf, punting, darts, basketball, various card games and footy tipping. Points are awarded based on results over the weekend. We try to avoid physical fitness challenges as Pat would win that and we don’t want that to happen!”

Is the Blazer an old Blazer that belonged to one of the group and why is it named the Jaffa McGaffin Blazer Challenge?

“The blazer was purchased by Rhonda Jervies as there was no hope that most of us would fit into our original ones. The winner is presented with the blazer at the end of the weekend and keeps it until the next gathering. The event winner, host city/town and year are embroidered onto the back of the blazer as a reminder of past victories. It has been branded the ‘Jaffa McGaffin’ Memorial Blazer” after the Monivae discipline master Graeme ‘Jaffa McGaffin’, who we all got to know very well during our time at Monivae in the 1980s.”

I assume the social side of the Blazer Challenge and catching up with old school mates is the main motivation for you all to get together.

“The social gathering is the primary reason for getting together. The events just allow an opportunity for some healthy competition (and sledging of course).”

What are (the groups) various jobs now and any plans for future events?

“We do occasionally catch up outside of these gatherings, although never as often as any of us would like to!”

Nathan runs a consulting engineering company in Geelong, Victoria.

Pat runs a prosthetics/orthotics company in Bendigo, Victoria.

Craig is a teacher in Clare, South Australia.

Brett has a landscaping business in Werribee, Victoria.

Trevor runs a computer servicing company in Bundoora, Victoria.

“The Challenge” has been to many destinations and we look forward to it continuing for many more weekends away.

We built Folktribe on a solid foundation of humanitarian and environmental values,

they're our unwavering commitments that every decision we make come back to.

Moving into 100% hemp fabric was just such an obvious transition for us to make. Hemp really is a wonder plant, it has a much bigger yield than others used for natural fibre, it has a low impact on the soil and doesn't really require chemicals to grow so not only is it better for the environment but also the people farming, producing and wearing it. In its life as a fibre it does not shed microplastics when laundered and is known for its durability. The more you wear it the softer it gets but it really holds that durability and that's what we’re looking for, longevity in our clothes - in terms of both quality and in our timeless design philosophy.

Our garments are produced in Thailand by the team at Austhai, the factory is independently audited regularly to ensure safe and fair trading for the team. We have a pattern maker and sewists working together over there to make it happen.

Another natural progression for us was to move into botanical dye. A significant part of the environmental crisis that the fashion industry has created is through water consumption and pollution caused by toxic dye. It was paramount for us not to contribute to this. We use rainwater run off and plant matter for our dyes and do it

completely by hand so that we can monitor and minimise waste where possible and dispose of our left overs into the compost or the garden.

We really try to minimise our waste wherever we can, we have worked with our manufacturer to completely eliminate plastic packaging in freight and we have replaced paper packaging of garments with upcycled produce bags to help reduce plastic in our customers lives too. And of course, we only use recycled paper postage bags. We're always dynamic and looking for ways to reduce our impact.

Folktribe - a way of life

Finishing our garments off with coconut buttons and signature organic cotton tags really helps us give that final touch for our customer and ensures our garments are completely compostable at the end of their life. -Emma (Class of 2010) & Kelly Sommerville (Class of 2008)

Tapini - Mission Experience (From the cover)

“On arrival in Port Moresby, we were met by Father Brian. Our first encounter of Port Moresby was to jump onto the back of a truck with our bags as Father Brian darted in and out of the traffic. One of the things that I notice was hearing a number of locals calling out “whitey” as we travelled through Port Moresby which was a cultural shock.”

- Will Luhrs

“There are many superlatives that could be used to describe this trip. For me, I found this trip to be confronting, but in a positive sense in that, it challenged my beliefs.

We were also lucky enough to get to experience Sacred Heart Day with Sacred Heart Secondary School in Tapini. A massive feast was prepared and after our meal, we sang the Monivae School song, The Australian National Anthem and Riptide to the school. The girls went crazy over Louis Beaton’s guitar playing.

Although our singing was ok, it was nothing compared to the students themselves. Listening to the students sing during their assemblies and during mass caused goosebumps to appear on my arms.”

- Vania McCaskill

Although a majority of the students we met didn’t have luxuries such as the Internet, cars, phones or toilet paper, they were happy with what they had. It was incredible to see just how content these students are with so little.”

From the Foundation

MOCA Report

Since the Monivae College Foundation was first established in 1998, it has been very fortunate

to have been supported by a relatively small number of generous benefactors.

Prior to receiving the support of the Foundation, the buildings and grounds at Monivae College were in dire need of refurbishment and in some cases replacement. Much of the vastly improved facilities currently enjoyed by students and teachers at the College are a direct result of Foundation support.

Western Region Cricket HubThe current capital works project requiring Foundation support is the development of the Western Region Cricket Hub at the College. With the full support of Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and the Southern Grampians Shire Council, Monivae has been selected for the development of a pre-eminent cricket specific facility in the Western Region of Victoria.

It is anticipated this will also establish a significant ‘point of difference’ for the College.

The Foundation is looking to all past and current stakeholders in the College for support via tax-deductible donations.

Should you require any further details regarding any aspect of the Monivae College Foundation, please contact the Director of Development at the College,

Mrs Jill Whiting at [email protected] to obtain further details.

Laurie CoggerChairmanMonivae College Foundation(Class of 1973)

It’s great to see old collegians coming together beyond the official year level reunions. This

year, players from various 1st XIII teams from the 1970s held a successful reunion in July. The class of 1993 are holding a twenty-five-year reunion in November and by the time you read this the class of 1978, will have celebrated 40 years. If you are either planning or have had a recent catch-up with classmates, let us know, we always love to see photos of old collegian get-togethers.

The most recent official reunions were for the Class of 1998 and the Class of 2008 in Hamilton. Of all the year level reunions, they traditionally have the lowest attendances. But for each group involved, they are at a time in their lives when much is happening, so it’s understandable. Well done to those who got along to all the reunions. The Class of 1988 30-year reunion rounds out the year.

My report is tinged with sadness as myself and the Class of 1985 have recently learnt the news of the death our classmate and friend Damian Hassett. Many of caught up with Damian in 2015 when he joined us for our 30-year-reunion. We

will treasure the time we spent with Damian on that night and the memories shared. Our thoughts are with the Hassett family.
