RECYCLING DAYS:Sat 7th & Fri 20th Apr

Stilton Parish Council was represented at the meeting organised by Cllr Peter Mitchell to discuss use of the public open space in the middle of Gala Close. Over many years the Council has tried to help residents come to a workable solution to the conflict between those who see this as a quiet amenity and those who want somewhere safe, near home, for their children to enjoy free play.

FINE CUTSIndeed, the hedge and trees were planted by Stilton Parish Council to try and avoid damage to gardens from stray balls. This hedge is maintained by the Parish Council. The grass cutting is the responsibility of Cambs County Council, but it contracts that out to Stilton Parish Council and pays for THREE cuts each year. In reality it is cut 22 times a year, at the expense of Stilton Parish Council. We assume that local householders prefer a more manicured look, rather than a hayfield, but this is costly. If the area is further planted, the Parish Council won’t be able to undertake any regular or occasional maintenance unless the costs are fully met by either the District or County Councils.

OWNERSHIPThe Parish Council cannot comment further until the question of ownership and/or control is settled. We would also like to have information on the planning conditions laid down when the Norman Drive / Gala Close area was developed. It may be that any restrictions to the free use of the area would be prohibited.

USE THE FIELD!We are aware that play space is limited, but cannot accept that older children aren't allowed to go to the new field. Some playing on Gala Close green have come from other areas of the village, so why not congregate on the new field instead? Street lighting is not a valid issue for much of the year, certainly not in the months when it is warm enough for outdoor play. Plans for the provision of challenging and exciting play equipment and a basketball net are being drawn up once the results of the consultation questionnaire are available. A small copse of trees has been planted, thanks to Huntingdonshire District Council, and picnic tables will soon be in place. Even before all this takes place the field is the best place for games of football, rugby or cricket.

Tree Survey The Tree Officer of Huntingdonshire District Council, Brian Ogden, will be making a tree survey in Stilton fairly soon. If you feel any tree or group of trees, deserve the protection of a Tree preservation Order, please contact the Clerk to Stilton Parish Council, Mrs. Mary Croll (241042) with the location and type of tree, so the information can be passed on to Mr. Ogden.

Special Rubbish Collection

Wed - Fri April 18 - 20 July 4 - 6 Nov 28 - 30

Please leave your rubbish outside your property, but not obstructing the footpath, by 7am on the first morning. 'White goods' will be collected separately by lorry. Please remove doors from fridges and freezers for safety.

As usual, what cannot be taken: garden refuse (use your wheelie bin) petrol engines tyres builders' rubble cast iron stoves tree trunks and large branches (unless cut into short lengths and tied or bagged)

Before putting items out for the collection consider whether they could be of use to someone else. Charity shops are found at the Broadway Centre Yaxley and the Orton Centre. Also go to www.ecyclebin.com where you can offer anything that needs a new home to people within a 50 mile radius (you can also ask for things you want!)

Cambridgeshire Constabulary

If you need to contact the Police you should ask for PCSO Barry Chamberlain. He has taken over from PC Wendy Ellis, but it's the same number 0845 456 456 4

Stilton Playing FieldThe theft of the notice board does not alter the rules. Please note:

NO DOGS NO CYCLES NO OVERNIGHT CAMPING NO FIRES

Village Survey 2007 Members of the Council walked around the entire village on two Sundays in February. Generally, the village looks tidy and well tended.

A list of repairs etc. has been compiled and will be sent to the relevant authorities. Most of these are road or footpath issues. The worst is Fen Street where complete re-surfacing is needed, which the Parish Council has been pressing for for several years. We will again raise the urgency of this.

In a few places trees and bushes hang over onto footpaths and householders will be asked to cut those back. Street name signs sometimes need replacing; we noticed Queen Eleanor Close, Apreece Way, Cooper Thornhill Road and Worthington Close and will also be asking for clearer signs at the crossroads where the distinction between High Street and North Street is not clear.

Increases inBurial Fees

1 April 2007 - 31 March 2008Burial Fees have not been increased since 2000 and have fallen behind others in the locality. Even after these new increases, our fees are still lower than those of our neighbours.

The Parish Council also decided to raise the age for interment of children from 11 to 16.

Chairman of the Burial Board is Doug Maltman (242229) and the Clerk is Mary Croll. (241042)

43 Years Ago...Prompted by our recent coverage of the sewer works carried out in Stilton, Pat Gawler sent us a press cutting from Jan 1964.

Following pressure from Folksworth Parish Council, a sewerage scheme for Folksworth was extended to include the Norman Cross motel, at an additional cost of £1500 to install an extra 850 yards of sewer across the A1. Looks like a bargain by modern standards!

This was apparently part of a major two-year programme of works, involving 6½ miles of sewers, six pumping stations and three treatment works, serving Alwalton, Chesterton and Folksworth.

Trials Are you between 40 and 65 and want to help prevent a stroke?

It is well known that smoking and high blood pressure contribute to the risk of stroke, but it is still not clear why people have strokes, and the cause of 50% of strokes is unknown.

Research now suggests that genetic factors may contribute towards having a stroke. Scientists now have the technology to look at individual genes to see if they can identify those that may contribute towards causing strokes, but they need YOUR help.

YGP has been asked to help in a national research study looking into the prevention of strokes. We are looking for people between the ages of 40 and 65, who have not had a stroke, to complete a questionnaire and donate a sample of blood. No medication is involved and the visit should last no more than ten minutes.

If you would like to know more please contact the Helen or Nina in the Trials department on (01733) 244601.

Congratulations! Our warmest congratulations to Sara Bailey and Catherine Forward, our two Nurse Practitioners, who have both passed their Nurse Practitioner Degree, achieving B.Sc. Hons. Well done girls, all that hard work was worth it in the end!

Patients' Association AGM

The Patients' Association AGM will be on Monday 23rd April at 8pm. Refreshments will be served from 7:30pm, in the Health Education Room. If you would like to know more about the Association, what it stands for and achieves on behalf of our patients, how we raise funds and how the money is spent to benefit patients, doctors and nurses, then come along to the AGM. Our speaker this year will be Mrs Chris Wilkinson, Director of Nursing who will give a talk on Hospital Infection Control.

Pride in Peterborough

Awards The 10th Pride in Peterborough Awards were held at The Marriott Hotel on 15th February. Three of my colleagues and I attended the evening where we heard amazing stories of bravery and courage and where special people got together to receive the acclaim and recognition they deserve.

The entire staff of YGP were one of the three finalists nominated for Health Professional of the Year category. Ward 8 at Edith Cavell received the award in this category - many congratulations to them! We are delighted to have been nominated for this award and aim to continue our work caring for all our patients to the highest level possible.

Medical Tipof the Month Good Sleep Hygiene

1 Keep regular bed time and rising time.2 Avoid day-time napping.3 Take day-time exercise with exposure

to daylight.4 Avoid stimulants - alcohol, cigarettes or

coffee5 Establish bedtime routine e.g. milky

drink6 Avoid dwelling on problems in bed.7 Bed should be comfortable, not too

warm or cold. Suggested changes in behaviour and thoughts:

1 Keep bedroom for sleeping, no food, drinks, books, TV, in bedroom. Put light out straight away.

2 Go to bed when you feel tired.3 If you can't sleep get up and go out of

bedroom4 Make time earlier in the evening for

going through events of the day, plans for the next day, so these do not encroach on bedtime.

Going to sleep is an effortless process; trying hard does not help. Think pleasant thoughts, e.g. summer days, water, etc. Emphasise positive achievements; disasters do not necessarily follow after a poor night’s sleep.

News from

GRAVITY ATTRACTSAt the last meeting we had a visit from Gravity (ramp builders) and we have nearly defined the plans for a skate park that will be cool for everyone in the space we have got (30x20 metres). We might also get a meeting point out of the budget.

VIDEOThere is a promotional video coming out quite soon from the kids of Stilton and whoever skates can have a part in it. This will be sold to raise money for the skate park, raise more awareness about it and hopefully encourage more people to start skating. Anyone who skates and wants a part then please talk to me.

LEND A HAND, SK8Z!Cheese Rolling is coming again and the group will be having a stall; please members we need all the help that we can get. Come to the meeting on the 5th April and we will be deciding what to do and who should do it.

ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITYMembers of the group have been emailing and writing to companies and businesses to ask for money towards the skate park and in return receive advertisement in the prospectus and at the skate park. If anyone could help with this or wants to make a donation then please contact either myself or Peter Mitchell the Treasurer.

OPEN DAY SPECIALOn the 5th April Tony Evans is coming to talk to the group about the mobile skate park that will be coming to Stilton on June the 16th for the New Playing Field Open Day. It will cost around £560 out of the skate park bank but we do hope to make money on the day. There will be demonstrations and lessons for very beginners. More about it next month.

Our first issue of the Prospectus has been printed and all of the representatives will get a copy. If you would like to sponsor us and have a mention then please let us know.

Don't forget; Meetings on the 1st Thursday, 6:00 to 7:00 pm in the CMR. Next one on the 5th April.

Hospital StayLOCAL LOBBYING SAVES HINCHINGBROOK

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCEThere has been a considerable amount of work carried out in order to save Hinchingbrook Hospital and it appears that we have had a measure of success, writes Cllr Peter Mitchell. Thanks not least of all to our MP Shailesh Vara, Officers and Members of the District Council and those of you who wrote in with your comments. I reproduce here a report from Shailesh Vara and will keep you informed about any future developments.

Hinchingbrook Hospitalby Shailesh Vara MP

Locally, the major issue at present is trying to ensure that we maintain a full and proper service at Hinchingbrook Hospital. You may be aware that I campaigned. along with my neighbouring colleague Jonathan Djanogly MP, to keep a full range of services. The hospital is no longer threatened with closure and that is due in no small measure to your help and support. The 55,000 people in Huntingdonshire who signed our petition did make a difference, as did the many thousands who wrote to the Strategic Health Authority setting out their opposition to the cutbacks.

However, we must not let up if we are to keep a full service at the hospital. The consultation document launched by the Primary Care Trust says that there will be cuts behind the scenes. I am worried about this. I feel that these cuts may impact on front line services in the following way: a few months after a final decision has been made, we may have a situation where the hospital says it miscalculated and there will, after all, need to be frontline cuts. I have therefore called for a three-year analysis of any proposed savings before they are implemented, to ensure that they are practical and sustainable. I will continue to monitor the situation and urge you to take part in the consultation process, making your views clear to the Primary Care Trust. We must continue to exert as much pressure as we can on this vitally important issue.

Thankyou, Stilton!Dear Editor

As my redundancy from Browns, after ten years of service, came over-sudden, I did not have an opportunity to thank and say goodbye to all of you who have been so kind and helpful to me.

As you know, when the business moved to the village I was honoured to be taken over. I worked all these years full of enthusiasm because I was really happy.

Through SCAN, I would like to say a huge thankyou to all of you who made me feel part of the Stilton community. We pass through hard times together and that is what I am not to forget ever.

I hope that I will see you and all the familiar faces I remember from serving at Browns. My family and I will be grateful for the rest of our lives for everything you’ve done.

Wishing Browns every success, I wish you and all your readers all the best.

God bless you!

Guide Dogsfor the Blind

Dear Editor

I wonder if any readers would be kind enough to save their used postage stamps, and old mobile phones which are worth £ 3.50 to the organisation. Forward them to me and I will make sure they are taken to the local treasurer of the Guide Dogs for the Blind. Appeal. It would be a small contribution to a very worthy cause.

So far, since February 2006, just by putting a message in the Yaxley monthly magazine I have delivered 81 mobile phones and 15½ kilos of stamps to the treasurer.

If you would like me to collect that would be no problem. I can be contacted on (01733) 705293 (evenings)

Many thanks

Debbie Milner

The Winners’Podium!

Apologies for missing the last couple of SCANs, writes Sean Murphy, I've been a little injured. It's difficult to enjoy it when you know you can't participate. Anyway, I'm back to fitness now and looking forward to the season ahead, so what's been going on with the Yaxley Runners since Christmas?

FOLKSWORTH SUCCESSOur annual Folksworth 15 race took place in January. Traditionally, as organisers, we have discouraged our members from running (unless they're in training for spring marathons) as we require about 70 people just to support the race. Fortunately, with over 100 members now, we had some spare capacity. Thanks go to the local scout and army cadet groups, and friends of the club who also helped make the day a success.

This year we had secured closure of Elm Road in Folksworth to enable the race finish area to be safer and better organised. This was a great success. We have not heard of any residents being inconvenienced - indeed the owner of the most affected property offered Paul B and myself a cup of coffee in the early part of the day; many thanks for that kind gesture.

The race was run in near ideal conditions, not too cold, although the wind picked up for the second lap. Karl Mills was the first Yaxley man home, claiming that he found it quite easy! Try harder next time Karl. Chantelle Swart was first woman, improving on her 2006 time by 10 minutes.

MOVING ON UPFrostbite season ended at Huntingdon, with the club finishing a creditable 11th overall. This is a significant improvement on the lower of the table that we have occupied in previous years and has come from having men capable of finishing in the top 100. Jim Grant and Simon Perkins have consistently finished well across all six races, and John Ackroyd and Karl made an impact on those races in which they've competed. Add to this the performance of the two leading ladies; Carry Murphy finished 18th in the last race with Chantelle hot on her heels. And a high turnout helps as even those runners who don't score stop other clubs from doing so. So, let's be back on good form in October.

MARATHON PREPARATIONSThe London Marathon is now a few weeks away; local runners have benefited from lots of longer distance races to compete in. After the Folksworth 15 came the Stamford 30k (ouch) and the March Mondi 15. Werrington Joggers organised a training run around Rutland Water in March, and Bushfield and Yaxley joined forces for a three-hour session, marshalled and guided by 'Big' Ron Firth on his bike. Thanks to Rob T for that idea.

I don't think there'll be another SCAN report before the big day, so the very best of luck to all of the area's runners in the Marathon, both club and charity. Remember, every stride is one stride closer to the finish, you CAN do it!

Steppin’ OutSTILTON STUMBLERS’ SUMMER PROGRAMME

At our first “official” strategy meeting - in the pub - we elected a planning team to put together a programme of walks. As you can see, something for everyone. Plenty of opportunities to discover more of our local area and an expedition to the Peak District.

So all you Stumblers out there - put the dates in your diary. And if you haven’t joined us yet, just turn up on the day and find out what a friendly bunch we all are!

All local walks meet at The Pump at 10:00am (not 10:30 as originally.)

Having heard about the Stilton Stumblers, I decided it was what I needed to get a bit of exercise and meet new people, writes Amanda Clements. The morning of the first walk was grey and rainy. I thought of staying in bed with the papers, but my conscience got the better of me and I donned boots and waterproofs and headed out to meet the group. Apprehensive that the group was going to be all old people with bobble hats I was delighted to see a range of ages at the meeting point. There were experienced

walkers, but I was glad to see novices like myself.

What a great time! The sun came out and the pace was easy. Most of the walk was on footpaths across fields; muddy but fun! I found surprisingly pretty places I never knew existed so close to home. I could talk to new people if I wanted
