where it is a pleasure to walk from one garden to another with a central place to have a sit down for a scrummy piece of cake and cup of tea.

Our team of volunteers has expanded this year and most of us are in the photograph below. This was partly due to the retirement of Diana Robertson and Suzie Breakwell. The team also includes two more recruits, Donna Hambly and Alex Graham. As always, I am grateful to everyone for their help and assistance.

Thank you so much for visiting our gardens and I trust you will find some new gems to add to your favourites.

on Wiltshire gardens

Dear Garden Visitor,

Despite the slow beginning Wiltshire had a record-breaking year for the funds we helped to raise for all the beneficiary charities supported by the National Garden Scheme. This is due to the generosity of our garden owners but also very much to all of you for visiting the gardens.

I am delighted to report that we have eleven new gardens for 2022. Two of these, Scots Farm and Salthrop House, had ‘pop-up’ openings in 2021 but they still appear as new in the booklet to make you all aware of them. We also have a new group of four gardens at Whaddon, near Salisbury, to add to our group openings at Dauntsey and Hannington. Others, like Julia’s House Children’s Hospice and Wadswick Green, could not open in 2021 due to the Covid situation but we are delighted to welcome them on board for 2022.

As always it is worth checking the website – www.ngs.org.uk - for any last minute alterations.

We are continually looking for new gardens to open for us. If you have one or know of someone who owns one and would be interested in opening for the NGS then please contact me or any of our team members. If you worry that your garden isn’t large or interesting enough then please don’t feel discouraged. We are always happy to welcome new groups

Thank you for supporting The National Garden Scheme, the foremost garden opening charity in England and Wales.

Are you an outing organiser?A National Garden Scheme open garden is a great place for a group to visit. So whether you’re a group of enthusiastic amateur gardeners, a photography club looking for inspiration or simply a group of friends –

come expecting a warm welcome with plenty of tea and cake!

Wiltshire, a predominantly rural county, covers 1,346 square miles and has a rich diversity of landscapes, including downland, wooded river valleys and Salisbury Plain.

Chalk lies under two-thirds of the county, with limestone to the north, which includes part of the Cotswold Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The county’s gardens reflect its rich history and wide variety of environments.

Gardens opening for the National Garden Scheme include the grade II listed Edwardian style gardens of Hazelbury Manor and large privately owned gems such as Knoyle Place, Chisenbury Priory and Corsley House, together with more modest properties that are lovingly maintained by the owners, such as 41 Whistley Road in Potterne and 1 Southview in Devizes.

The season opens with snowdrops at Westcroft, daffodils at Fonthill House, fabulous tulips at Blackland House and magnolias in spring at, amongst others, Corsham Court and Oare House.

A wide selection of gardens, large and small, are at their peak in the summer. There are also three village openings which number a total of twenty gardens including a new group at Whaddon, near Salisbury. If you are from a gardening club there are in addition a wide range of gardens open by arrangement totalling twenty-one in all. There is something to delight the senses from January to September and one will always have a warm welcome wherever one goes.
