AUTOGRAPHS
On January 8, 1935, Elvis Aaron Presley was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two room house in Tupelo, Mississippi. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn.
In 1948 Elvis and his parents moved to Memphis Tennessee, Elvis went on to graduate from Humes High School in 1953.
Elvis began his singing career in 1954 with the legendary Sun Records label. His recording contract was sold on to RCA Victor in 1955. By 1956 Elvis was an international sensation
with a sound and style that uniquely combined his
musical influences of gospel, pop,
country and R&B.Elvis starred in 33 successful films (31 scripted roles, plus two concert performance documentaries)
and made history with his television
appearances
and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record breaking, live concert performances on tour in Las Vegas. He honourably served his country in the U.S. Army from March 1958 to March 1960. During his time in Germany he met his future wife Priscilla. Elvis became a father on February 1, 1968 when Priscilla gave birth to their beautiful baby girl, Lisa Marie.
Among his many awards and accolades were 14 Grammy nominations which included three wins from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award which he received age 36, and was named one of the ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. Known the world over by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture. Elvis sadly died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977.
In 1957, Elvis bought Graceland a 13 ½ acre estate for $102,000.It was the fulfilment of a promise Elvis made to his parents whenhe was a child, he would often tell them that one day he would be rich and buy them the finest house in town. The WallThe wall surrounding the estate is often referred to as the“Graffiti Wall” because visitors write sentiments to Elvis on it.The GatesThe wrought iron gates at Graceland show two guitar players and musical notes. The Meditation GardenOn October 2 1977, the bodies of Elvis and his mother weremoved to Graceland from Forest Hills Cemetery. Vernon and hismother Minnie Mae are also buried there. Although Elvis’ twin Jesse Garon rests in Tupelo, there is a plaque honouring him.The TV RoomA total of 16 television sets were spread throughout Graceland, three of them were wall-mounted in the TV room, as Elvis liked to watch three sporting events at once. The UpstairsThe upstairs contains Elvis’ bedroom, his mothers, Priscilla’s and Lisa Marie’s. There are two bathrooms (one of which Elvis died in). The upstairs section of the house is blocked off to visitors.
Did Elvis Presley really die on August 16, 1977 or did he fake his own death in order to escape his celebrity status and be free to live the rest of his life out of the public eye? Elvis’ untimely death at the age of 42 shocked the world and since that day there have been alleged sightings and a number of conspiracy theories about what really happened to the King.
The official version of his death certificate states he was found face down on the floor of a bathroom at Graceland, at around 2.30pm on August 16, 1977. Elvis was officially pronounced dead at 3.30pm at The Baptist Memorial Hospital.
Since that day many people have refused to believe the King had died but whatever the truth is one fact remains, Elvis was and will always be the greatest singer to ever walk this earth.
Elvis never learned to read music.
Elvis’ natural hair colour was blond (in his early years) and light brown; he dyed it black.
Elvis wore a cross, a star of David, and other religious symbols around his neck, explaining “I don’t want to miss out on heaven due to a technicality.”
Some of Elvis’s bejewelled jumpsuits weighed more than two stone.
The last film Elvis saw at the cinema was The Spy Who Loved Me, the day before he died.
Before Colonel Tom was managing Elvis, he would paint sparrows yellow and sell them as canaries.
Once, after receiving a kidnap/ assassination threat, Elvis performed with a pistol in each boot.
One of the first music videos ever made was for Jailhouse Rock.
In the eighth grade, Elvis received a “C” in music.
When he finished high school education, he worked as a truck driver.
Elvis recorded 15 songs with the word “blue” in the title.
Occasionally when performing, Elvis would change the lyrics to his songs and he once changed the words of “Are You Lonesome Tonight” from “Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there? To “Do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair?”
