Thanks to a brand new partnership between Middlesbrough Town Hall and Newcastle promoters Jumpin’ Hot Club, some of the finest Americana acts around will be playing in the stunning setting of the Town Hall’s restored Courtroom in just a few short weeks. The first gig – taking place on Thursday 8th November - is a double bill featuring Grammy-nominated acclaimed American singer-songwriter Kim Richey and Ben Glover, a Northern Irish-born Nashville-based heartfelt singer-songwriter. 2018 is shaping up to be a significant year for Grammy-nominated acclaimed American singer-songwriter Kim Richey. Having released her first album in five years, ‘Edgeland’, on Yep Roc Records in the spring, the release has accrued heaps of attentive praise and has grown her fanbase substantially. As a songwriter, Richey has written two Country Number One hits for Radney Foster (‘Nobody Wins’) and Trisha Yearwood (‘Believe Me Baby’), the latter of which was Grammy-nominated; her vocals also appear on Jason Isbell’s praised ‘Southeastern’ album as well as albums by Ryan Adams and Shawn Colvin. Ben Glover, who is sure to pull on your heartstrings , will be sharing the bill. As a songwriter, Glover’s fellow travellers include his co-writers like Mary Gauthier but they also include the characters that he crafts. On ‘Shorebound’, his latest album, the characters come fully formed, self-aware and self-possessed enough to keep their compasses set on True North even in the roughest of waters. In terms of the venue itself, at the official opening of Middlesbrough Town Hall’s Courtroom in 1889 it was described as: “The finest court of its description in the country”. It was used as a court from 1886 until 1973, becoming a staff canteen in 1978 and then office space from 1990 and has now been brought back to life as a performance space. Lorna Fulton, Head of Programme at Middlesbrough Town Hall, said: “We are delighted to announce this new strand to our programming and are looking forward to a successful partnership with The Jumpin’ Hot Club. I’m sure that our audiences will look forward to seeing some of the finest Americana artists around in the intimate setting of our Courtroom.”Kim Richey and Ben Glover play Middlesbrough Town Hall on Thursday 8th November. STORIES OF SANCTUARYAT DURHAM CATHEDRAL CHAPTER HOUSE

1. Simone J Rudolph

GIG PREVIEW 1

A new performance piece is set to take place at Durham Cathedral Chapter House this month and is certain to capture the heart and soul of the stories of people seeking sanctuary. ‘Stories of Sanctuary’ showcases new songs that were written by participants from different backgrounds, including Syrian refugees, in summer workshops facilitated by Durham-based folk singer-songwriter, Sam Slatcher. The performance brings together a thousand years of Durham’s history of sanctuary – from the arrival of an exiled monastic community carrying the body of the much loved Saint Cuthbert in the 10th century, through to recently arrived refugees from the civil war in Syria. The songs platform enchanting messages of peace that are brought alive by a fusion of different musical styles including medieval music, contemporary folk/jazz, as well as traditional Syrian folk music. MUSICPORT FESTIVAL 2018 WHITBY

FESTIVAL PREVIEW

Established in 2000, Musicport Festival was initially set up to be a one-off festival for the millennium year. Its popularity, however, has superseded this and it is now about to celebrate its 19th birthday. Taking place against the stunning backdrop of the historic seaside town of Whitby from the 19 – 21st October, this year’s Musicport Festival promises to be an event to remember for its ever-growing and evolving audience - a commendation to this not-for-profit community event. The superb Whitby Pavilion guarantees to be an exciting and eclectic yet intimate and atmospheric venue and boasts the ability to accommodate five live stages and over 50 acts over the weekend. On top of this, it allows Musicport’s audience to be able to enjoy cookery, comedy, films, a bazaar and even workshops (including some for young and very young aspiring musicians) all under one roof. Considering the aforementioned music and cultural happenings, it’s no wonder that Musicport has been nominated for the Yorkshire Gig Guide’s Grassroots Awards and is frequently referred to as: “the UK’s biggest indoor festival of world music”. Organiser, Jim McLaughlin, believes that: “local, national and international” is the best way to describe the musical feast offered for your enjoyment. The Levellers, The Blockheads, Chumbawamba and Lemn Sissay are just an example of the calibre of acts that have performed over the years - and this year will be no different. Prepare yourself for a musical journey, from Blackbeard’s Tea Party opening the main stage on Friday night with their driving dance rhythms and heavy rock edge, stopping off on Saturday with Destyn Maloya from the island of Reunion whose exclusive UK performance will reconnect with the origins of their music which, like the blues, is rooted in slavery but has strong ties to Creole culture. And arriving at your final destination on Sunday are Tankus The Henge who close the evening with their funk-fuelled, open top, custom paint job, rock ‘n’ roll jalopy, preceded by a set from Vieux FarkaToure – known as “the Hendrix of the Sahara” and son of the legendary guitarist Ali FarkaToure, and guaranteed to create some special memories. From rock to rumba, bagpipes to vocals and Denmark to Whitby, Musicport is likely to leave you arriving home wondering when the dates for next year will be released. Get them in your diary now – 18-20 October 2019! TRACY DANIEL

Somerset-based singer-songwriter, Kitty MacFarlane, is truly a wonderful sight to behold. Her lyrics combine honest snapshots of everyday humanity: they ask questions that have connected minds and voices for centuries and they manifest through her talented finger-picked guitar playing. Her debut EP titled ‘Tide & Time’ features musicians Sam Kelly (co-producer and lead singer of Sam Kelly and the Lost Boys), Jamie Franics, Lukas Drinkwater, Maya McCourt and Ciaran Algar. She gained her first national airplay on the BBC2 Radio 2 Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe and on Tom Robinson’s Show on BBC 6 Music, and in 2016 she went on an extensive national support tour with award-winning duo Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman. Other highlights of her career to date range from support sets for Seth Lakeman, Alasdair Roberts, Rachel Sermanni, Blair Sunlop, and Feast of Fiddles, to having one of her sons appear as a theme-tune on Radio 4, being a featured artist for a BBC Introducing documentary, and making the semi-final of the BBC Young Folk Award in 2015. In addition, Kitty has also been recently awarded a creative bursary from the English Folk Dance and Society (EFDSS) for a songwriting project of her own machination. It is safe to say that Kitty has a very respectable list of outstanding achievements that add even more legitimacy to her legacy as a singer-songwriter. Kitty’s songs are super-charged with a sense of environment and place, with her tracks often speaking about her Home County of Somerset. Mankind’s transactions with the planet - from small French fishing communities to colossal nuclear power stations - are often woven into her songs alongside a heavy interest into the human experience. Her lyrics explore the many connections between the works of literature and the geographical too, with influences by John Keats and Karine Polwart being very apparent. Her live set showcases the clarity and weight of her amazing vocals and guitar accompaniment, with these themes being the highlight of her work. The work that Kitty MacFarlane produces is empowering to hear and, without a doubt, is able to bring her audience that little more into catharsis. On Friday 5th October, Kitty MacFarlane will be playing at the Middlesbrough Town Hall with doors opening at 20:00. STEPHEN JUDE

Having spent much of their six-year existence on the road extensively touring the UK and European circuit - performing at major festivals and selling out headline shows on their travels - CoCo and the Butterfields head to Stockton’s Vault Hidden Bar this month in anticipation of the release of new material. Hailing from Canterbury, Kent, the eclectic outfit - influenced by genres including indie, pop, world music, hip-hop and R&B - signed a publishing deal with Peermusic back in 2016, before a short break which saw the band return to their home studio to work on their EP. New music was the result of their hiatus, which was quick to demonstrate a rapid development of the band into a more mature, radio-ready act.CoCo and The Butterfields play Stockton’s Vault Hidden Bar on Friday 12th October with doors opening at 19:30. Female-fronted alternative rock/new-wave grunge band, Hands Off Gretel, will make their way to the North East this month as they prepare to play the illustrious The Globe in Newcastle. Fronted by scream-queen Lauren Tate, the South Yorkshire four-piece strut a cheeky, sugar-coated mix of heavy garage-rock, grunge and pop-rock influenced by the likes of Nirvana, No Doubt and PJ Harvey. Formed in 2014, Hands Off Gretel features the guttural sound of Lauren Tate (the aforementioned lead vocalist/guitarist), Becky Baldwin (bass guitar/backing vocals), Sean Bon (lead guitar) and Sam Hobbins (drums). Founding the four-piece at just seventeen, songwriter Lauren is also behind the band’s art design, merchandise, music videos and album art visuals, creating Hands Off Gretel’s unique style aesthetic. With an overwhelming desire to create new music that pushed the boundaries of what had already been achieved, and after playing in various local bands, including Surrender To Suffering, Stone Lights and Didact, musician Carl Stacey embarked on a musical project steeped in personal triumph. Starting out as a solo venture back in 2014, the Carl Stacey Project has thus far come a long way - and this looks set to continue. Four years since their formation, and with three albums to their name, the Gateshead instrumental prog-rock collective are set to headline Newcastle’s Trillians venue alongside Newcastle-based alternative space-rock outfit Arkmind, alt-punk-rock group Thin White Line and hard rock ensemble Rituals late this month. Governed by Cardiff-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Davey Newington, Boy Azooga is a musical celebration poised for great success. And this month, Davey will joined by friends Daf Davies, Dylan Morgan and Sam Barnes as they command the stage of Cobalt Studios in Newcastle’s East End. With both of his parents former members of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Davey was no stranger to the depths of music growing up and was inspired by early memories of family favourites as well as an array of seminal artists such as The Beach Boys, Can and even Black Sabbath. Boy Azooga’s debut offering, ‘1,2 Kung Fu’ is an example of Davey’s virtuosity and is an acclaimed LP almost certain to impress when performed live later this month. Boy Azooga play Newcastle’s Cobalt Studios on Saturday 13th October. SAM DOBINSON

MUSIC V CANCER WEEKENDER AT THE GRAND HOTEL, HARTLEPOOL

GIG PREVIEW

Hartlepool’s popular music extravaganza, Music v Cancer (MvC), returns this month for its bi-annual, weekend-long live music show. This year’s MvC music weekender will take place on the evenings of Friday 5th and Saturday 6th October at The Grand Hotel, Hartlepool. And the weekend, which is best known for bringing some of the biggest and best names in music to the town, will feature another fantastic line-up. The Friday gig will see live sets from experimental multi-instrumental artist THePETEBOX, MvCstalwort Ryan Spendlove, and the captivating Shaun Redlake, with limited ticket availability. The Saturday night sees things kick up a gear with Americana artist Megan O’Neil, Leeds’ very own brother duo The Dunwells, and indie groove pop artists Citrus Heights, with tickets having already sold out. Founder of Music v Cancer, Tony Larkin, who set up the charity after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2009, said: “Music v Cancer is incredibly important to not only myself but to every single person that has helped support the charity and has been affected by the positive outcomes these events produce. Thanks need to go out to each and every musician and act that has helped to support Music V Cancer over the years; if it wasn’t for them giving their time to come and perform we wouldn’t have been able to help everyone we have helped over the past 8 years.” Tony added: “When I first started the charity, I never imagined it would become as big and successful as it has today; it’s amazing to think of how far it has come in eight years.” Past performers have included Turin Brakes, David McAlmont, The Magic Numbers, The Temperance Movement, The Blow Monkeys, Black (aka Colin Vearncombe) and Nizlopi, amongst many more. As well as the line-up of live music, the night also sees the MvC memorabilia auction which is famous for having some of the most sought-after pieces of collectables and souvenirs from artists such as Ed Sheeran, Arctic Monkeys and the one and only Modfather, Paul Weller. Tony added: “I’m really proud in all we have achieved in not only raising awareness but buying vital cancer detection equipment that helps our local community directly.” Music v Cancer is a not-for-profit charity and has held over 34 live music events to date and has raised over £305,000 which goes towards cancer detection equipment for the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trusts. When you hear the word Halloween, what instantly comes to mind? Ghosts and ghouls, pumpkins, black cats maybe? Well, you’ve forgotten the most important thing – rock/gothic music, of course. This is Halloween, brought to you by the spine-tingling Saints of War guys, isn’t only a celebration of all things spooky, but it also happens to be Saints of War lead singer Michael Hanlon’s first hometown gig with the band. Featuring Syndicate 66, Nation in Ruin, Nephilim, Desolation, Cigar Cigar, Arkmind, Krome and, of course, Teesside’s Saints of War, this will be a bone-crunching evening of rock music that will make you forget all about trick or treating – and that’s before even mentioning that the main stage host will be former Progress Wrestling Champion, Jimmy Havoc. Taking place at Saltburn Community Hall and Saltburn House on Saturday 27th October, this promises to be the heaviest, riffiest night on the Saltburn social calendar this month. LEE ALLCOCK

ROUGHNECK RIOT + SUPPORT AT THE WESTGARTH SOCIAL CLUB, MIDDLESBROUGH

GIG PREVIEW

Middlesbrough’s Westgarth Social Club is set to feature the raucous Roughneck Riot along with Tim Loud and Manaking as supporting acts in what’s set to be a high-octane affair. By no means a traditional folk-punk band, Roughneck Riot have been making their mark on the underground punk scene for nearly a decade with their heavy, melodic sound. Drawing influence from a menagerie of folk, punk and hardcore bands and praised for their highly-energetic live performances, they’re intent on highlighting socio-political issues of the 21st century to a new generation of punks. Against Me!, Dick Gaughan, NOFX, and The Levellers are all influences on the band, and an element of Bad Religion can be heard within the glorious cacophony of sounds that this UK folk-punk band punches you in the face with. These sounds of rebellion have been successfully compacted into two albums too, the first being ‘This is Our Day’ and the second ‘Out of Anger’, both of which are filled to the brim with punk attitude. The last album is especially well crafted if looking through the lens of artistic and music expression. Track ‘Parasites’ features a fast-paced melody and an equally fast accompanying folk guitar sound that makes one believe, as the title may hint at, that there are a swarm of parasites near your ear. The band’s element of punk can be found in titles ‘Resistance’, ‘Never Silenced, Never Stopped’ and ‘Each Man’s Hell’ – the last of which screams rebelliousness and anarchistic thoughts whilst having an amazing folk melody playing throughout. The music produced by this band is utterly unique, and to hear their sounds live would be a chance best not missed. The first of the supporting acts is Tim Loud from Leeds. Tim is a real character with range and depth in his vocals, a passionate and varied playing style, and the ability to tackle an array of genres and influences in his music. Manaking is the second of the supporting acts, and he’s a fascinating son of the rock and rap crossover. He has a debut EP entitled ‘My Name is Bedroom 7’ which features four eclectic songs that crossover a range of genres. And finally, spoken word/poetry/acoustic act Cherry B & Peesh make up the full line-up. Roughneck Riot plus support will play at the Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough on Sunday 14th October.Doors open at 17:00 and show is expected to start at 17:30.STEPHEN JUDE

RYAN MCGARVEYAT SAGE TWO, GATESHEAD

GIG PREVIEW

Internationally famed guitarist and singer-songwriter, Ryan McGarvey, is returning to the Sage, Gateshead this month for what’s certain to be an incredibly intimate evening of blues rock. Hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, the 30-year-old is returning to the same stage in the North East for the third time after labelling the Sage as an ‘incredible place’ back in 2016. McGarvey’s shows are always highly anticipated after establishing himself as a leading musician in a relatively short amount of time. After winning multiple awards over the past decade, he most recently received the prestigious European Blues Awards Best Guitarist in 2014 & 2016 and Best Acoustic Guitarist in 2017. His first album ‘Forward In Reverse’ was released by an independent record label of the same name in 2007, then followed ‘Redefined’ (2012), ‘The Road Chosen’ (2014), and the latest live album ‘Live At Swinghouse’ (2018). This October show is sure to be an explosive celebration of all of his releases so far. McGarvey has gained extensive acclaim following high praise from his own personal idols including admiration from Joe Bonamassa for his ‘hard work and skill’ alongside being selected by Eric Clapton to play Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago in 2010 out of over 4000 artists worldwide. With an impressive set of accolades, fierce guitar playing, strong vocals and an unstoppable work ethic, McGarvey has already been labelled one of the best in the business. His Sage, Gateshead date is one stop on his European tour of seven countries - so don’t miss the opportunity to witness his talent in an intimate venue in the North East while you still can.Support on the evening comes from UK blues trio the Mitch Laddie Band who also released a brand new album ‘Another World’ earlier this year. Local guitarist, singer/songwriter and producer Mitch Laddie is from County Durham and his music is far from the blues stereotype with jazzy, funky solos that have alerted the attention of rock fans globally.Ryan McGarvey and The Mitch Laddie Band make their way to the Sage Two in Gateshead on Saturday 27th October for a gig that North East blues fans really should get excited about.RACHEL BYROM

Debuting at the Van Abbe museum in Eindhoven, and curated by Nick Aikens, ‘Rasheed Araeen: A Retrospective’ is the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s 60-year catalogue of work, much of which has had a profound influence on generations of artists, writers and thinkers that followed. Staged across BALTIC’s Level 3 and Level 2 galleries, the exhibition traverses the depths of Rasheed Araeen’s esteemed career and is structured fittingly across five chapters: from the artist’s early experiments in painting in Karachi in the 1950s and early 60s, his geometric structures produced after his arrival in London in 1964, key pieces from the 70s and 80s following Araeen’s political awakening, his nine-panel cruciform works from the 80s

and 90s and a selection of his new geometric paintings and wall structures. Alongside the primary exhibition, a range of materials which stem from Araeen’s writing, editorial and curatorial projects are set to be on show for those in attendance with the aim to assist in exploring the expanded artistic practice of an artist whose work continues to challenge the political assumptions of Eurocentric modernism. The exhibition entitled ‘Rasheed Araeen: A Retrospective’ is set for a four-month run at BALTIC, Gateshead this autumn and will be open for public viewing from Friday 19th October 2018, running until Sunday 27th January 2019. ZOE LYONS AT ARC, STOCKTON AND THE STAND, NEWCASTLE

Since 1996, the English artist-photographer Dan Holdsworth has explored the “extreme” territories that characterize humans’ changing relationship to the ‘natural’ world in the Anthropocene. Since 2012, the artist has worked alongside academic geologists to map the exact contours of Alpine glaciers and rock formations by using drones, lasers, photography, and high-end software ordinarily employed by the military and climate scientists. And the result is the series Continuous Topography, consisting of images created from millions of points marked in space, each a millimetre-perfect registration of the precise contours of a rapidly changing landscape (in this instance, the Alps). Continuous Topography creates an image of what Holdsworth calls a “future archaeology”. What we encounter are not only three-dimensional maps of places

characterised by extraordinary natural beauty but historical records: records that document the very shape of the world that we have to lose. The exhibition reveals the first moving-image works the artist has created, and that’s after working for 20 years with large-format analogue cameras. These works offer a kind of hallucinatory realism that the pre-Raphaelites could only dream of, in the campaign to create an art characterised by its truth-to-nature, and a fidelity to recording the organic world in its every detail. The exhibition will be on display at Northern Gallery For Contemporary Art, Sunderland from Friday 26th October 2018 until Sunday 6th January 2019.

Mock the Week star Zoe Lyons, who’s also a much-loved figure on ‘Live At The Apollo’, as well as a regular on Radio 4 - for whom she’s making her very own series this year – will take part in an extensive tour of some of the best North East comedy venues this month including The Stand in Newcastle (Friday 5th October) and ARC in Stockton (Thursday 18th October). After extensive stints on ‘The News Quiz’, ‘Just A Minute’, ‘The Now Show’ and plenty more, this hugely popular comic returns with a fresh crop of quick-fire observational gags, delivered with utter conviction, not to mention proper laugh-out-loud one-liners. With the Guardian claiming ‘she’s a sure-fire winner’, we’re not in any doubt that she’ll be bringing her much-loved wit and caustic sense

of humour, taking jabs at the beauty industry, car salesmen and her recent stint on Masterchef. Zoe took her first steps down the comedy path in 2003 after training as an actress at the Poor School in London. She went on to win the Funny Women Competition in 2004 and her debut Edinburgh show was nominated for the Best Newcomer Award. She may be an ‘Entry Level Human’, as the title of her show suggests, but as a comic, she’s a sure-fire star. This hugely popular comic is touring after her fantastic run at the Edinburgh Fringe and will be showcasing her brand new material that’s sure to have you laughing all night long. Celebrated Newcastle and London-based artist duo Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan are perhaps best known for their cartoon-faced, large ‘beast-like’ sculptures and they have most recently been commissioned by the celebrated Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) to produce an artwork (A Proposal to Ask Where Does A Threshold Begin & End) to be displayed across the historic town centre. After working collaboratively for over 20 years, Tatham and O’Sullivan have developed a reputation as two of the UK’s leading artists, developing enigmatic images, sculptural objects and installations. Known for occupying densely-populated public spaces as means of contrasting the art with its natural or unnatural surrounding, their work invites spectators to question the role and

function of the artwork. ‘A Proposal to Ask Where Does A Threshold Begin & End’ is a multi-part public artwork which investigates representations of the area, histories of art, and relationships with landscape. The complete body of work is set to enter the Middlesbrough Collection, the town’s modern and contemporary holdings of art and craft, housed at MIMA, upon the completion of the exhibition. Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan’s artwork, ‘A Proposal to Ask Where Does A Threshold Begin & End’, is currently on display in privately-owned and civic spaces around Middlesbrough Centre Square (MIMA, Holiday Inn Express, Cleveland Business Centre and Middlesbrough Town Hall) until Sunday 7th October. Newcastle-based dancer and theatre-maker Peter Groom’s new production, ‘Go Away Johnny’, sees a performance of a piece that was partly created inside ARC’s theatre space. The production is a blend of dance, theatre and performance that explores the nature of memory. Set on a giant sheepskin rug, six performers search for connection with each other, their lost lives and the memories that bring them together. The piece explores the moments in which quietness takes over and reimagines them in elongated pieces of theatre. From these moments come the half-remembered, half-formed snapshots of memories of encounters, whispered conversations and brief touches. Peter graduated from Guildford School of Acting in

2013 and has worked nationally and internationally, including at New York and Berlin. He is a performer on the rise and draws on his experiences working in Berlin to develop his style. Whilst performing there, he learned what was capable with dance-theatre and will be showcasing ‘Go Away Jonny’ at ARC, Stockton on Wednesday 17th October. This production of theatre and dance follows Peter Groom’s successful run as Marlene Dietrich in his solo show of the same name up at Edinburgh this year. The piece was such a hit at this year’s Fringe that this year’s new production promises to be incredibly exciting. AARON BOWMAN

RICH HALL AT MIDDLESBROUGH TOWN HALL

Though a Virginian by birth, Rich Hall’s take on politics has led him to become a staple of the British comedy scene and is, perhaps, seen as a national treasurer. This month, he brings his latest comedy show to the newly renovated Middlesbrough Town Hall Theatre for a night that promises to cut close to the bone, especially in the current political climate. His BBC Four documentaries, most recently Rich Hall’s ‘Countrier Than You’, Rich Hall’s ‘Presidential Grudge Match’ and BBC Radio 4 series Rich Hall’s ‘(US Election) Breakdown’, have brought about a new legion of followers. Hall has had a clutch of his own television specials on British television but has also worked on ‘The David Letterman Show’ for

which he won two Emmys and has also appeared on ‘Saturday Night Live’. In the UK, he’s more famous for his appearances on ‘Have I Got News For You’, ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’ and for his hilarious turns on ‘QI’. But if you’ve only ever seen Hall on TV, you’ve short-changed yourself. Rich Hall’s Hoedown begins as a withering dissection of Trump’s America but ends up being a celebration of the USA. There’s stand-up, improvised ballads, cracking good musicianship, and ultimately a hilarious, foot-stomping, shit-kicking good time to be had by all.AARON BOWMAN

In Thunder Road, two women living in an ordinary British town leave their ordinary lives behind when they pack a car with First Aid Training Course materials. Maureen and Sylvie discover the power of the Heimlich manoeuvre, adventure and escape, the death of the Little Chef, the call of the open road, and the kind of friendship you’d take a bullet for. Expecting the trip to last just a couple of days – then they’ll both be home and everything will go back to normal – things takes an unexpected turn in a Travelodge and events spin out of control. Taking its inspirations from the quintessentially British First Aid training course and the iconic feminist road movie

‘Thelma and Louise’, Thunder Road tells a story like you’ve never seen before – it’s a story that will ring true in your heart and make you laugh till you cry. This bold, original and dark comedy by Redcape Theatre promises to an excellent piece of stand-up theatre. Performers Catherine and Cassie have even been lauded by critic, Lyn Gardner, so we know we’ll be in strong hands. Red Cape were last seen in the region on tour with ‘Be Brave and Leave for the Unknown’, which was a smash with audiences from Saltburn to Alnwick. AARON BOWMAN

HARRY & CHRIS SAVE THE WORLD

London-based artist Heather Phillipson presents her major new commission, titled ‘Age of Love’, at Gateshead’s illustrious BALTIC Level 4 gallery this month. Presented through a vast series of videos, sounds and objects that operate as landmarks in a distorted landscape, ‘Age of Love’ exhibits a departure from what Phillipson calls her: “increasingly apocalyptic undertones”, instead leaning towards more: “affirmative ways of conceiving and defying”. According to the official BALTIC website, the commission suggests ‘alternative forms of coupling, gendering, transportation, intimacy and duration, and consigns linearity to junk.’ In tandem with her art projects, Heather is also an award-winning poet and has published four volumes of poetry: a pamphlet with Faber & Faber(2009); NOT AN ESSAY (Penned in the Margins, 2012);

Instant-flex 718 (Bloodaxe, 2013), which was shortlisted for the 2013 Fenton Aldeburgh First Collection Prize and the Michael Murphy Memorial Prize; and More Flinching (Periplum, 2018). She was named a Next Generation Poet back in 2014 and is now a regular contributor to ArtReview magazine. Heather Phillipson’s latest exhibition, ‘Age of Love’, supported by the Henry Moore Foundation, is set for a five-month stint on display at BALTIC, Gateshead from Friday 19th October 2018 - Saturday 9th March 2019. Harry and Chris are a genre-bending pair whose rare mix of comedy, jazz and some slam poetry thrown in has been entertaining audiences around the country for over ten years. After sell-out runs up at the fringe in 2016 and 2017, this year they bring their show ‘Harry and Chris Save the World’ to ARC in Stockton. Although labelled comedy, the pair have been known to cover more serious topics, with comedic takes on serious issues such as climate change, the climate of fear and even racist media propaganda. It has often been said that in times of darkness, the best remedy is laughter and the pair use this to their advantage, successfully navigating the thin line between protest and parody. Their songs range

from panda repopulation to coming of age to Robot Wards, but what remains clear is that this pair has the ability to dazzle an audience, counting even Jonathan Ross as a huge fan. Separately, Harry Baker published his debut anthology with Burning Eye in December 2014, whilst the show of the same name won ‘Best Spoken Word’ show in 2015.His partner in jazz-rap-crime is Chris Read, who has performed at Montreux Jazz Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and his debut solo album was released in 2016. Undeniably one of the North East’s finest comedic exports of recent years, Teesside-based comic Fran Garrity is set to bring his superb one-man show back home as he headlines The Georgian Theatre in the heart of Stockton early this month in what promises to be a night to remember. Fran is no stranger to the stage and, given he’s been active on the comedy circuit for a number of years, he’s already set about creating a back catalogue of monumental performances, a tally which is only going to increase in the coming years. 2017 saw Fran secure a warm-up support slot for Mancunian comedian Jason Manford and later that year he debuted his solo show, ‘Secret Agent Fran’. Often heard on the airwaves of both national and regional

radio, Fran has featured on such shows as BBC Radio 4’s New Comedy Awards and BBC Radio Newcastle’s features ‘Jesting About’ and ‘It’s Grim up North’. NATHAN & IDA’S HOT DOG STAND AT GOSFORTH CIVIC THEATRE, NEWCASTLE

Painter, sculpture and installation artist Jaisen Yates is set to bring his new exhibition, ‘Monochrome Coloured Autophobia’, to Newcastle this month.Yates has returned from China after a successful show at the prestigious Museum of Modern Art in Hubei, Wuhan and will be working once again in residence at Abject Gallery in preparation for his up-and-coming exhibition tour of China and Europe which begins later this year in Beijing. Yates’ work epitomises a lifelong obsession with the unique; his accumulations of objects and images share strong senses of meaning and hold the intrinsic essence of the time of their production. The meanings extracted from these sources are both the personal and the subjective endeavour of the viewer, an arrangement of artefacts

that spiral off, illustrative of an evolving memory. These works are many faceted: magical realism combined with a street-art aesthetic, a surrealist undercurrent in its association of disparate elements creating an appeal of subconscious memory. Found objects become connected to others by an esoteric relationship dependent on their occurrences in time, semi-cultural affiliations and historical relevance; a transition of transcendental information. These works are an echo of surrealism, a search for context - historical, emotional and aesthetic - they form a personal lexicon, giving Yates a sense of ownership of the world he explores.

If you’re on the lookout for a heart-warming and hilarious show then Nathan and Ida’s Hot Dog Stand is a production well worth seeing as it hits the stage of the Gosforth Civic Theatre this month. So, here’s the story: Nathan and Ida Hardwerker arrive in America with nothing but a will to succeed and a recipe for secret sauce to pursue their dream of opening the finest hot dog stand Coney Island has ever seen! The show, which has won the Best Performance Award at Swindon Fringe Festival 2018, has a cast of over 25 characters – well, kind of as they’re all played by Ida and Nathan.Inspired by the true story of the founders of Nathan’s Famous hot dog restaurants (actually called Nathan and Ida Handwerker), Nathan and Ida’s Hot Dog

Stand has been created by long-time comedy collaborators Ida Berglöw Kenneway and Nathan Peter Grassi, using their particular brand of irreverent storytelling – even throwing in a little tap dancing into the mix. “The show is a homage to The Thirties,” explains Ida, “when European emigrants headed to New York to carve out a new life for themselves”. Nathan adds: “We’re capturing the spirit of the vaudeville era: telling a comic and at times touching story of adventure, determination and romance, using lots of different performance styles”. Heel Turn may describe their sound as influenced by At The Drive In, Sunny Day Real Estate & The Beastie Boys, but personally, I get a distinct Dead Kennedys’ vibe from their energetic hardcore debut EP, ‘A Giant Blue Dragonfly’, which certainly isn’t a bad thing. There are so many bands out there at the moment attempting a post-punk sound but they just end up sounding like Diet Green Day – and Heel Turn are a breath of fresh air with their unashamed, gritty and instantly likeable tunes. The term “Heel Turn” is used in wrestling to describe a character switching roles from good guy to bad guy. And the name suits the band perfectly as, throughout the EP, there is an almost schizophrenic switch from measured and crafted vocal to shouted, thrashy laments giving a personal and three-dimensional delivery. The confident vocals combine with guitarist Sam’s super crunchy guitars, Aaron’s bass lines, and thumping drums that take me back to a much richer time in guitar music than we currently have. From 70’s birth of punk right up to early 2000’s, US hardcore sounds ring out from this collection of tracks. Although this is the first release for Heel Turn, it has a self-assurance that gives the feel of a well-established outfit. The band’s first gig was back in late 2017 at TS One, Middlesbrough, and since then they’ve gone from strength to strength; writing, recording, performing and perfecting their own original sounds. Proudly Middlesbrough-based, the outfit mentioned that they: “take inspiration from [their] life experience and surroundings in Teesside, and the title of the EP is sourced from North East poet Ian Horn’s work, ‘IRONOPOLIS’”. As if crafting and performing their own brand of retro punk rhythms wasn’t enough, the boys from Heel Turn have also established their own record label, Sad For Life Records. They added: “The aim is not just to release our own material, but to also champion the best and brightest talent from Teesside and beyond”. To celebrate the launch of this EP, Heel Turn will be hosting a gig at Westgarth Social Club in Middlesbrough on Friday 5th October with support from Whale Hill and Dense. You can also catch them in The Chapel Room at The Middlesbrough Empire on Saturday 3rd November with support from SWEARS, and Saturday 17th November at The Green Room in Stockton. I for one can’t wait to see them perform soon and hope that they can follow up this debut with some more cracking tunes. A Teesside couples’ vision for a new resource for musicians in Stockton

and the surrounding area takes shape with the opening of Connie’s Music Box

in just a few weeks’ time. Set up by Jake & Kayleigh Hope, the couple are experienced

musicians, with Jake performing as a solo artist and Kayleigh also working alongside

Jake as duo Two Hearts. Connie’s Music Box is named after the couples’ daughter who sadly passed

away a few years ago; it is hoped that through the establishment of this enterprise Connie’s spirit will live on

and provide inspiration for many people. Connie’s Music Box will open initially with one rehearsal space and equipment available for hire at very reasonable rates. Jake & Kayleigh, in their own words, stated that they: “hope to expand facilities in the future to include a recording studio and more rehearsal space”. Located in the centre of Stockton on Skinner Street, just a stone’s throw from ARC, the new venture is ideally located for the regular band practices of local acts and performers visiting the town. Speaking to Jake, you can tell the enthusiasm he has for music in general - and of course this business. It is this combination of experience, skill and energy that I am sure will make Connie’s Music Box a success. Jake and Kayleigh make a

great and inspirational team in life, and it stands to reason that this will be reflected in their business venture. In

the near future, Jake mentioned that: “There will be a Rock School established at Connie’s Music Box,

introducing kids and teens to the enormous fun of learning an instrument and being part of an amazing band!” Since the 2003 Jack Black film, ‘School of Rock’ - and the incredibly successful stage show of the same name - there has been a real upsurge of engagement in music through rock schools; it’s projects like this that will no doubt produce the next Lady

Gaga or Dave Grohl. Jake will also be providing his expertise as a guitar tutor and offering a

guitar re-stringing service to boot at Connie’s Music Box. The music scene in Stockton is positively

buzzing with energy, and Connie’s will be an essential addition to the facilities available to musicians in the area.

With everything that’s going on in Stockton right now, I’m sure there will be loads of budding musicians and established bands making a beeline for Connie’s Music Box. For more information and bookings either contact Jake on 07801596984, email Jake and Kayleigh at [email protected], or send a message to the couple on Facebook at Facebook.com/conniesmusicbox. The last major jazz festival in Middlesbrough was the ‘Newport Jazz Festival at Ayresome Park’ in July 1978 where stars such as Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald graced the football ground. This 40-year-anniversary will be marked with an exhibition of memorabilia from 1978. As a nod to the past, UK- based artists Chris Barber and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra who appeared at Ayresome will also feature on the Saturday of the Weekender. However, the Weekender has a clear and compelling focus on the future of jazz with performances from four contemporary jazz ensembles ready to kickstart the entertainment on Friday evening. The acts set to play include Break Out Brass Band - the first all-female New Orleans style brass ensemble in the UK - Ubunye and Roller Trio from Leeds and Manchester-based Beats & Pieces Big Band whose informal style of playing, all from memory, re-invents the big band style for a new audience. The bands are part of a scheme called Alt-Shift-J run by the agency Jazz North with a mission to attract a younger audience to the music genre. There will be something for everyone, even the kids, as they can participate in an engaging musical experience named ‘Tots Play Jazz’, a show from Chris Sharkey, or everyone can join in with a vocal workshop with Pete Churchill on Sunday titled ‘How to Make the Words Dance’. These events will hopefully

ignite interest in jazz music in a younger generation, ensuring that this weekender will be the first of many. Event Programmer Ros Rigby said: “I was absolutely delighted to be asked to programme this first major jazz event in the beautiful, newly-refurbished Town Hall and I hope that it creates a starting point for more jazz events in the venue in the future, as well as growing an interest in jazz among younger players and audiences.” The programme for Sunday afternoon consists of a series of exciting jazz ensembles that you would usually only be able to see at an evening concert.Singer Hailey Tuck from Texas is joined by a UK band that includes

Guisborough-born pianist Rick Simpson; Teesside’s very own Noel Dennis is joined by vocalist Zoe Gilby with a new

collaboration project about American trumpeter Tom Harrell; The Ushaw Ensemble who fuse

elements of folk, contemporary classical and jazz and finally, The Printmakers - a group of some of the greatest UK Jazz performers of recent years. Material by members of The Printmakers Nikki Iles and Norma Winstone will be played alongside songs from the likes of varied artists Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell. The grand finale will be a performance from

the Mingus Big Band, bringing the festivities to a jubilant close. Mingus Big Band are a

Grammy-nominated large-scale jazz ensemble from the USA who celebrate the music of acclaimed

composer Charles Mingus, one of the most important figures in twentieth-century American music who wrote

music far ahead of its time. The band tour extensively and pull in audiences who might not usually come to see jazz - a perfect way to end a weekend of jazz showcasing all under one roof. Tickets are available for each individual event and start at just £3.00. PEEL REGENERATED 5AT WESTGARTH SOCIAL CLUB“It’s about celebrating the underground and diverse music that many of us grew up listening to on John Peel’s show”

Teesside-based promoter, Stephen Harland, began hosting gigs back in 2010 when he was asked to put on the Middlesbrough Rock Garden Reunion, and since then has organised nearly a hundred shows.Driven by the

desire to see his favourite bands, it seemed that no-one in the area was creating the kind of live music events that Stephen was hankering for, so he went ahead and did it himself – brilliant! In the past 8 years, Stephen has brought The Savages, The BellRays, Gallon Drunk, WTFUKUSHIMA, The Nightingales and a whole host of other bands to various venues in Teesside - and is quite rightly proud of his achievements. Coming up on Saturday 20th October, Peel Regenerated 5 will take place at the Westgarth Social Club in Middlesbrough and is the fifth such event created by Stephen.Celebrating the legendary broadcaster John Peel - whose radio shows of the 70s, 80s and 90s championed new music and launched the careers of many, many artists, including The Undertones and The Fall, to name but a few - the event marks 14 years since John Peel’s death and demonstrates the legacy of music that the DJ left behind. Stephen spoke about why he continues to run the Peel Regenerated evenings: “It’s about celebrating the underground and diverse music that many of us grew up listening to on John Peel’s show. The original idea came from some friends of ours who promoted a similar show in the Preston/Manchester area and we decided to do our own tribute the following year - and we have continued doing it ever since.”Bands from across the UK will descend on Middlesbrough for Peel Regenerated 5. The headline act are Scottish vintage garage rockers, The Primevals, led by founding members Michael Rooney and Tom Rafferty, and citing influences from The MC5, The Stooges, Captain Beefheart, The Gun Club and The Cramps. The band originally formed in 1983 and after releasing their first single ‘Where Are You?’, they

recorded a session for John Peel’s Radio One show, bringing their 60’s garage-rock-influenced tunes to a wider audience. Some of our older readers may remember The Primevals supporting Dr Feelgood at Coatham Bowl in Redcar in 1990, and after a seven-year hiatus in the 90s, the band are back on the road and back in the studio, most recently releasing a limited edition 7” EP that very quickly sold out. Turning Black Like Lizards from the Midlands join the line-up. Some of the members of this band previously made up the act Head of David, and guitarist J had the honour of taking part in a session with John Peel. The band are heavily influenced

by The Stooges, Sonic Youth and Joy Division and describe their sound as “hypnotically abstract garage/post-punk.”

Also appearing are London-based noise rockers The Infinite Three. Formed in 2009, founding members

Daniel Knowler and Robert Allen enjoyed some success with their previous project Leisur::Hive. Taking cues from noise-rock, dub effects, drone and metal, The Infinite Three’s songs are “warped constructions grounded in heavy repetition and clattering dissonance”. Robert Allen’s role ended in 2012 when he was replaced by former GOD drummer,

Paul Middleton. Also on the bill, and from the steel city of Sheffield, The Hot Soles are a

two-piece act playing aggressive soul, whose live performances have been described as a “rip-roaring,

raucous, soul vibe”. Since forming in 2010, this band has shared stages with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Vampire

Weekend & Sleaford Mods. Now that’s quite a line-up and it doesn’t end there! Joining the out-of-town bands are some real local gems too including Pellethead from Teesside, Newcastle rockers Nine Tons, DRIPP and Fret! Advance tickets can be bought direct from the venue on 01642 242164, online at seetickets.com, or by contacting Stephen on 07769258035. It’s 12.00 OTD otherwise and the event commences at 15:00 and runs through to 23:30.CHARLIE RICHARDSON

CAPE CUB

Daniel Stark

Picking up band members and awards along the way, Teesside’s Cape Cub have come pretty far since their

launch back in 2014. Starting off as the bedroom solo project of singer/songwriter and producer Chad Male, Cape Cub have grown and developed into one of the most successful bands in the North East at the moment. At the very start of their career, Cape Cub quickly gained thousands of online streams for now-classic tracks such as ‘Lantern’ and ‘Swim’, the second being one of Cape Cub’s biggest songs, with the

RAMI remix clocking up over 18 million plays on Spotify. Fast forward a few years and 2017 saw Chad Male win the Alan Hull award at the Community Foundation - an award that remembers Newcastle-born songwriter and founder of Lindisfarne, Alan Hull, and recognises and celebrates the songwriters still living and working in the region. Reigning from the shores of the North East coast, Chad Male is nothing short of the ideal candidate for the award, and I think it’s pretty obvious through his hard work just how much he

“We’re super excited.Our live show

is sounding sweet!”

“It’s our biggest headline show yet so we’ve got to try and step it up a notch, haven’t we?”

deserves it.Just this year, the band have had not one but two single releases in ‘Come Around’ and ‘Moonglow’, both of which have thrived - ‘Moonglow’ even became BBC Music Introducing’s track of the week back in July and featured in several Spotify playlists. From local festivals such as Stockton Calling and Darlington’s Music Box to their own headline tour that they embarked on back in June, Cape Cub have definitely played their fair share of gigs.A band that are constantly performing up and down the country, this month sees the band take centre stage at Newcastle’s The Cluny for their biggest headline show to date.Speaking to Chad Male about the occasion, he said: “We’re super excited. Our live show is sounding sweet. As I write this we’re at rehearsals and fine-tuning the live show. It’s going to be a special one for sure. We’ve been working super hard to refine the set, re-work some material and add in new tunes. It’s our biggest headline show yet so we’ve got to try and step it up a notch, haven’t we?” But their headline gig isn’t the only exciting thing coming up for the band this month. Cape Cub are set to play Middlesbrough’s Twisterella Festival for the third year in a row, this time playing alongside the likes of Dylan Cartlidge, Boy Azooga and Vistas. Speaking to Chad about playing the festival, he added: “We can’t

wait. It’s always an amazing festival to play and it’s lovely to play near home to all our first supporters and our friends and families”. When asked about who he’s looking forward to seeing live he noted: “Avalanche Party, the best damn band in the world. And Bryde, Dylan Cartlidge, Llovers...the list goes on to be fair. It’s a line-up filled with a bunch of

our mates doing supreme things.” Just last year I was lucky enough to witness their Christmas show at

The Georgian Theatre in Stockton, as well as catching them at several different venues in the North East and beyond this year. It’s safe to say that if their past gigs are anything to go by, gig-goers heading to The Cluny and Twisterella are well and truly in for a treat. Always managing to put on a simply euphoric show every time, Cape Cub are a band that you 100% need

to see if you haven’t already. As we start reaching the end of an incredibly successful

year for the band, it’s exciting to think about what 2019 might have in store for them - and

I’m certain it has potential to be something very special. Tickets for the band’s headline show at The Cluny on Monday 29th October are available at seetickets.com, with tickets for Twisterella Festival now available at seetickets.com or in person at Sticky Fingers, The Westgarth Social Club and Tea House in Middlesbrough. “The focus of Twisterella is very much on bands breaking through”

Twisterella Festival is truly something very special for the Teesside community and is an event any region would be incredibly lucky to have. Launched in 2014 by promoters Pay For The Piano and The Kids Are Solid Gold, the event is centred around Teesside University, in local venues and pop-up stages. Back again this October (Saturday 13th October to be precise), Twisterella is set to be even bigger and better than ever before. This year sees artists such as Avalanche Party and The Blinders headlining, with other acts including Fling, FEVA, Lhymes, Cape Cub, Llovers and Dylan Cartlidge, to name a few. Speaking to Henry Carden, one of the event organisers, he spoke about Twisterella with utmost pride: “It feels a little bit clichéd to say it’s our best line-up ever, but I’m going to say it anyway! Acts like The Blinders, Boy Azooga, Avalanche Party and Bryde, to name but a few, have been picking up plaudits nationally all year, so to have them leading the way at Twisterella 2018 is something Andy and I are pretty proud of. The entire line-up is filled with bands who I want to say are ‘must see’ – whether it’s Scottish indie-pop kids Vistas, London-via-Hull dream-pop pioneers Night Flowers or Northern Irish future-pop star ROE, there’s just so much quality running through the bill. Boy Azooga are our ‘reverse headliner’ this year and they’ll be playing first on the Teesside Uni stage – if you needed an excuse to get down early, there it is!”When I asked him what made Twisterella so important to the region, he explained: “When Middlesbrough Music Live (and then Intro Festival) fell by the wayside, Middlesbrough was left without a music festival. Although Andy and I don’t have anywhere near the same kind of budget as those events had, we still felt it was important for our town to have a music festival to be proud of. The focus of Twisterella is very much on bands breaking through and we’re lucky that the gig-going public in Teesside embrace that and are as passionate about discovering their new favourite band as we are!” Previous

years of the festival have seen the likes of Eliza And The Bear, Sam Fender, Black Honey and Clean Cut Kid take the stage, along with other local favourites such as Mouses, Ceiling Demons, Plaza and The Black Sheep Frederick Dickens. Just last year, Avalanche Party headlined the packed Westgarth Social Club. With crowds piling out of the door, their set was truly ferocious - everything you’d expect from an Avalanche Party gig and a perfect way to sum up the insane passion and energy Teesside has for its local scene. “If you’ve not been before, Twisterella is a multi-venue music festival so, essentially, we use actual venues - TSOne, The Westgarth Social

Club, Teesside University SU and The Townhouse – rather than outdoor stages. Importantly, all of the venues are

within 2 minutes walk of one another. Make sure you check out some of the pop-up stages too, where

you’ll be able to see stripped-back sets in some of Boro’s coolest bars”, says Henry Carden. In addition to the live acts, Twisterella features an (Un)Conference with the focus on bringing key music industry figures to the town to share their expertise and offer advice to new and developing North East musicians. Previous panelists have included Vic Galloway

(BBC Scotland), Rianne Thompson (Amazing Radio), Simon Pursehouse (Sentric), Helen

Hammill (Cattle & Cane), Bob Fischer (BBC Tees Introducing), Claire Dupree (NARC. Magazine),

Tom Cotton (Absolute Radio) and Oliver Jones (Deer Shed Festival). For fans of emerging local, national and

international artists, Twisterella is truly a masterpiece of an inner-city bonanza – so don’t miss out, buy your ticket now. Tickets, priced at £19.50 in advance including booking fee, are available to purchase online at seetickets.com or in person from the Westgarth Social Club, Sticky Fingers, or the Tea House in Middlesbrough. Glaswegian rockers Fatherson have destroyed many stages and eardrums with their intense live shows and aggressive style. Returning for their much anticipated third album ‘Sum of All Your Parts’, Damian Robinson caught up with vocalist/guitarist Ross Leighton to talk new music, live shows and the importance of being honest.

‘Sum of All Your Parts’ has been billed as the work of a band looking to rip things up and start again. What’s prompting the need for a new start? It’s not so much of a new start with this album, rather the culmination of a band ensuring they produce their best work. Our vision for the album was to make sure we all felt comfortable to disagree with an idea or a sound if it didn’t feel right; we wanted to have no fear of upsetting anyone else in the band and believed that this would help us produce our best work. We are all really proud of this album and I think it’s because it’s uncompromised.

Was that hard to achieve in a band dynamic? Not really, no. We’ve been friends for 17 years and have spent a decade in this band together already. Over the past year and a half we may have only had 10 days apart from each other, so we’ve worked hard to make sure we have genuine honesty in the band. It’s no good to anyone saying a song is good at the start then wanting it cut from the album; if a song’s not working it’s better to hear that at the start of the process.

How did working with producer Claudius Mittendorfer help this band dynamic? He’s well known for working with huge bands already in Arctic Monkeys, Interpol, etc…Claudius has really become the fourth member of the band - he’s a real friend of the band. Production-wise, he was able to slide right in and be part of our set up, joining in with the in-jokes and really understanding what we wanted from the album. He’s done amazing production work in the past and it was a

dream to have him on board.

You’re out on the road soon to support the album, so what can we expect to see? We’ve got the Blue Americans supporting us and they’re amazing, so between us and them, it’s going to be a really good night of good music. From our perspective, we’ll play some old and new stuff. We’re really excited to play the new material but we’re also happy to play the better-known material. We love being in the North East, we love the University venue, and we’ll be out to make sure everyone has a good night.

‘Sum of All Your Parts’ is out now and can be purchased on Amazon and iTunes.

Fatherson play Newcastle University on Sunday 28th October. Tickets, priced at £9.50 in advance including booking fee, are available from seetickets.com.

Tom Steinseifer

Local alternative rock outfit, Black Nevada, has gained a solid reputation with their energetic live shows and intense recorded tracks. Last year’s ‘Fragments’ EP cemented their status as both ‘ones to watch’ and ‘ones to see’, with blistering sounds and full-throttle energy. Back on tour and working on new material, Damian Robinson caught up with Black Nevada guitarist Joe Metcalfe to talk about the importance of live shows and the complexities of having too many ideas at once.

‘Fragments’ came out about a year ago now. How do you feel when you look back at that EP?We’re very proud of both the EP itself and also the reaction we received from it. Funnily enough, we wrote the EP really quickly once we had the first few ideas. Once we found the songs, the EP was finished in a really short time.

How are you finding following it up?We’re full of ideas and creativity at the moment. The difficulty, if you like, is

piecing the fragments (no pun intended) together and stopping for a moment to work on our old ideas before the new ones come along. What I would say is that the music is sounding amazing and once we piece parts together properly, it should be some great work. We’re aiming for early next year to have something new out.

And whilst you do that, you’re still out in the live scene. The show at the O2 in August was pretty special…Thanks. It’s always great to play the O2. The line-up for that show was incredible, so it’s a compliment to all of the bands that the show was good, not just to us.

Next, you’ve got a couple of weeks off and then you’re back into a new run of shows? That’s right. We’re playing Edinburgh soon and Reading, then we’ll be back at the Forum in Darlington before we play more shows. I think all of the band would agree that playing live is our favourite part of being in a band.

And the Forum, in particular, is pretty special to you, isn’t it?We love it. Not only is the sound quality amazing but the venue is also doing some great work with original music across the region – and it’s also on our doorstep, which we like.

And finally, what can people expect from the gig at the Forum? It’ll be an amazing show, really energetic. We’re so excited when we’re on stage and we want everyone to feel the same way, which is what live music should be about. We write and play music to make others feel good and happy and to inspire others to pick up an instrument, so I hope that comes across.

Black Nevada play The Forum, Darlington on Thursday 11th October. Tickets, priced at £3.00 in advance, are available from ticketweb.co.uk.For further information about Black Nevada including their touring schedule and upcoming releases, please head to blacknevada.com.

Local songwriter Patrick Jordan has worked with a number of highly-rated North East artists over the years and is preparing to finally release his own EP – well, three EPs in total. Lee Allcock caught up with Patrick to find out why he’s decided to eventually bring out his own material.

You’ve worked with some acclaimed local artists over the years, but why have you now decided to go ahead and release your own solo material? After spending the past decade producing music for other artists, including Cattle & Cane, The Chapman Family, Chloe Chadwick, Mosaic Sun, Be Quiet! Shout Loud, and my former band Young Rebel Set (YRS), etc, I decided to go back to songwriting which was something I hadn’t really done since leaving YRS. A year ago, I realised I had stopped spending time on music other than producing for other artists; I had stopped playing the various instruments I had around the studio and I made a conscious decision to get back into

playing and performing. I bought a new guitar (as you do) and this inspired me to start playing again.

And you’re about to release your third EP in your series. Tell me more…The first song I wrote, ‘Change Your Mind’, was actually the last track that I recorded and it appears on the debut EP. I wrote it originally for Matt from YRS for his solo album but decided in the end to use it for myself. The next song I wrote was ‘I Know I Should’ve Stayed’. I was trying to capture a live band feel and a stripped back alt-country sound. Unfortunately, at that point (and for all the recordings) I didn’t have a band. This meant a lot of trial and error with the first few songs to find a band ‘sound’ but with me playing all of the instruments.

Did you ever feel like you were going to get to the point where you’d bring out your own material?I kept working on my music quietly with no plans for it other than to start enjoying playing and writing. At the same time, I

continued working with other artists such as The Evans Brothers, Cattle & Cane and Nicky Chapman. Over the course of a year, I racked up an album’s worth of material and at the end of one session with Mark Evans, I nervously showed him a couple of tracks. Thankfully, he loved them and said straight away that I should do something with them - and that is when I started looking at putting together three EP releases and finding a band. Joe Hammill from Cattle & Cane told me he was launching a solo EP at The Georgian Theatre in Stockton so I asked him if he needed a support and he put me on the bill, that then provided the impetus to get a band together and start rehearsing. Once all three EPs are out I will be looking to release the best tracks as an album on vinyl via a Pledge music campaign.

The first and second EPs are currently available on all digital platforms. The third EP will be released on Monday 29th October and pre-orders are available now on all digital platforms.

SARABETH TRIO“Music was incredibly important to me as I was

growing up and figuring out who I was”

Russ Harrington

Born and raised in Dallas, SaraBeth is a contemporary country singer who is seamlessly making her mark in Nashville as an all-American, sweetly southern artist with an edge. Damian Robinson caught up with SaraBeth to discuss her headline show in Redcar and the impact of music on culture.

We’re excited to see you play in the North East of England where you’re headlining Tuned In! in Redcar. Are you excited about coming back to the UK?I am, yes. Our UK tours are something we look forward to every year and we have so many friends and fans that we’ve made throughout the past few years, so it’s amazing to be able to give them a hug and catch up. We try to make the most of the time there too and play as many cities as we can.

For those who haven’t seen the SaraBeth Trio live, how would you describe your sound? And what can people look forward to in the live show? We are a high-energy, tight, harmony

group with upright bass and acoustic guitar, with me also trying to play shaker on a few songs. We try to play an intimate show running on a set list, but we try not to plan things out too much so that each show is unique.

Tuned In! is known for its work supporting the local youth and community. How important do you think music is in supporting communities? I think all creative activities are important as they help to build culture. Music moves people: sometimes it moves them to dance, other times it’s to think or even cry. It tells stories that let us know there are others out there who’ve gone through what we’ve been through. Music was incredibly important to me as I was growing up and figuring out who I was.

The Tuned In! show is your first time in Redcar in a tour of the UK. Do you prefer the touring part of making music or the studio work?Honestly, I love it all. Touring might have a leg up on the creative side though

because the fans are the reason we get to do what we do; watching them react to the music from the stage is an amazing feeling. It’s always been a dream of mine to play music and to see fans singing words that I wrote and recorded back to me.

Do you have any plans for after the tour that you’re able to share with us?We are actually heading to New York for a show and also to see our friends who play for Chris Stapleton play a show at Madison Square Garden. Then soon after that, we’ll be releasing a brand new single.

SarahBeth Trio plays Tuned In!, Redcar on Sunday 14th October. Tickets, priced at, £12.45 in advance, are available from eventbrite.co.uk.

North East greats Pigsx7 return to our consciousness with superb new album ‘King of Cowards’ and its supporting UK tour. Damian Robinson caught up with guitarist Adam Ian Sykes to talk about the recording process and the challenges of being such an intense band. We’re loving the new album. Approaching its release to the general public, how are you finding the initial reaction? It’s been very humbling to hear that people are enjoying it so much. A slight change of direction always leaves you with a faint inner voice telling you people aren’t going to gel with it to the same degree as past releases but thankfully, so far, the reception’s been great. Of course, we’re not going to hear much criticism direct to our weathered faces and a quick vanity search on twitter brings up the odd putdown, which, in its own way, is refreshing to see also. Given your reputation as a dynamic live band, does studio recording come as a

hindrance in any way?Not at all. Sam owns Blank Studios here in Newcastle and he designed and built the space himself which makes recording a lot less stressful and a lot more enjoyable. Playing live is a different beast: in a lot of ways it’s the most enjoyable part of Pigs, but after a long period of writing and gigging, getting into the studio is refreshing. What techniques do you use to re-create your live sound in the studio? We don’t really set out to re-create the live sound on record. Live, often through sheer volume and visual aide, the audience will mainly perceive energy and intensity, so with good use of compression and distortion, and some good mastering, we can get that side of things fairly close to that feeling. There are lots of small gains made throughout the recording process though, from tracking to mixing, and we may often re-amp guitars through multiple amps to thicken the tone or double track guitars and vocals.

Lead single ‘Cake of Light’ has been really well received and has gained a lot of attention. Considerably shorter than the other tracks on the album, do you see the band moving to 3-minute songs in the future? It certainly won’t be a conscious decision but when we write a track and it feels natural to end it at a certain point, that’s where we end it. Saying that, it’s fun to play live - the breather after just 3 minutes is very welcome. With a reputation for playing relentless shows, how challenging is it to maintain your dynamic whilst out on tour? It’s tiring but adrenaline takes care of that while we’re on stage. It’s boring but playing 12 consecutive shows dictates that we take better care of ourselves while we’re out there. Pigsx7 play Stockton’s The Georgian Theatre on Thursday 25th October. Tickets, priced at £8.00 in advance, are available from georgiantheatre.co.uk.

18-year-old singer/songwriter, Charlotte Grayson, from Hartlepool is set to release her new single/B-Side this month so Lee Allcock caught up with Charlotte to find out what listeners can expect from the new tracks.

You started writing songs at just 15-years-old, but what or who were your inspirations for getting into songwriting and why?Honestly, I got into songwriting because all of the musicians and promoters around me were telling me it was what I needed to do to get to the next level - and they were right. I instantly fell in love with it and I take inspiration from a lot of country artists such as Kacey Musgraves and Taylor Swift as well as more obscure and alternative artists.

The gender divide in the world of music, across all regions, is 70% male to 30% female which seems outrageous...so what do you feel can be done to help women bridge that gap?I think the only way to bridge that gap

is for more people to support female music and also for female musicians to stand up for themselves in such a male-dominated world. It can be hard to get people to take you seriously as a teenage girl so you have to demand it, not ask nicely.

You’re set to release your new single and B-Side, ‘Something to Miss/Mesmerised’, on Friday 12th October, so what can we expect in terms of its sound and lyrical content?‘Something to Miss’ is a waltz with an almost childlike sound and lyrically is about the struggle one of my friends went through after a breakup. It was the nicest way I could find of saying: “he isn’t worth it, don’t sulk, go and make him wish he kept you”. ‘Mesmerised’, if I had to categorise it, I think would be an acoustic ballad. Lyrically, it centres around the concept of being so infatuated by someone that you can’t really make a rational decision on whether they are right for you.

We hear that you’re also planning to release your debut album next year. Can you tell me some more about that…The album is, at the minute, planned to be 14-tracks long. Every song on there is unique but there are a few areas of common ground throughout all of them. There is an underlying country sound to the album, and the lyrics are very typical of teenage experience told from a personal perspective.

And finally, what else do you have lined up for the rest of the year that our readers can get excited about?I am shooting a music video very shortly so that will be out in November, and also I’m playing the first ‘Sonic Sisters Club’ event celebrating female musical talent on Friday 16th November at The Studio in Hartlepool which I am very excited to play.

You can buy ‘Something to Miss/Mesmerised’ on Amazon and iTunes on Friday 12th October.

Indie wonders The Coral are back with glorious new record ‘Move Through the Dawn’ and a highly-anticipated live tour to boot. Damian Robinson caught up with frontman James Skelly to chat about the new record and the band’s love of Newcastle’s Riverside venue.

A month after the release of new album ‘Move Through the Dawn’, how are you finding the response to the album?I’m a bit surprised about how well the album has gone down, to be honest. Both this album and our previous one have been really well received and it’s quite a shock. To be honest, I’m kind of surprised by a lot of the reaction we receive for almost anything we do.

‘Move Through the Dawn’ feels, musically, like the opposite of ‘Distance Inbetween’, this time with a Beach Boys and Wrecking Crew sound. How much does the challenge of writing in a new musical style motivate the band?We try to change our styles on most albums. What seems to be important

to us is that we try to switch things up musically in between albums. In order to be inspired we need to be aware of different music sounds and influences, and once we’re inspired we try to run with our ideas.

You’re a bit of a workaholic with writing and touring Coral tracks and then with the work coming out of Skeleton Key Records. How do you balance your time?(Laughing) I wish I didn’t have to be a workaholic, to be honest - I’d like to retire and live on a yacht. Not really, I just love making music and it gives my life a real meaning. You’ve got to have a meaning to your life, haven’t you? Otherwise, you’d just end up being a jellyfish or something. We do like to try to have a balance with our families as well as the music. We rehearse even if we’re off tour. We’re an old-school band and we don’t play to clicks so it’s important to keep working.

You’ll be back in Newcastle to support ‘Move Through the Dawn’. You tend to

start your tours up here, but is there a specific reason why?Funnily enough, our first show back from our time away was in Newcastle, at the Riverside, so we have good memories of the city and the venue. Newcastle is always a great place to play with a great crowd. We’re bringing She Drew The Gun and Cut Glass Kings out with us on this tour so it’ll be a great show of good music. It’s always nice to start the tour at a venue we know appreciates good music, and we appreciate the reaction we get up north.

The Coral play Riverside, Newcastle on Wednesday 3rd October and the event is now completely sold out. However, please contact the venue directly on 07557995474 for any enquiries.

‘Move Through the Dawn’ is out now and can be purchased on Amazon and iTunes or streamed on Spotify.

Whereas the majority of the mid-90s indie scene championed loud guitars, typecast

frontmen and most things reductive, history shows that a fraction of artists held firm in an attempt to shield culture from sheep dipping and ‘ladism’. As 1998 would go on to prove, the rebel scum would pay a high price for going against the mainstream. However, their public flogging would make it easier for guitar bands to take risks, incorporate electronics, and create music that wasn’t filled with 12 overdubbed guitar solos. Gomez, with ‘Bring it On’, may well be the band who benefited most from these sacrifices. Part nostalgic, part celebration, the ‘Bring it On’ tour tonight takes the original songs, jams some of them out (‘Tijuana Lady’, ‘Rie’s Wagon’) and re-fits them into today’s world. Most impactful with this re-contextualising is Ben Ottewell’s blues vocal and the way he makes the songs fit more with a man nearer 40 than 20, ultimately providing the songs with an air of reflection and melancholia.Gomez reminded us of a time when this would never have been possible - yet it was. Up first tonight to perform to the highly-appreciative crowd were Du Blonde.

Fronted by Newcastle-born Beth Jeans Houghton, she decided to go through a visual and aural transformation from sombre folky to bleach-haired, red-lipped alter-ego/project Du Blonde in 2015 - and she’s become a caricatured vision of the ultimate punk frontwoman. Singles ‘Black Flag’ and ‘Hunter’ sound even better live and the band’s chemistry is solid, ruining any chance of it becoming a one-woman show. After a short interlude, up stepped self-proclaimed oddball Ezra Furman in his customary black dress, lipstick, and pearls. The bisexual, cross-dressing Jew performed a number of tracks from his new album ‘Transangelic Exodus’ including recently released single ‘Suck the Blood from my Wound’, with many of the doo-wop-influenced punk-rock sounding tracks referencing mental illness, Judaism and gender issues in some way. Ezra began to feel a lot more comfortable during the latter stages of his performance noting: “Thank you for accepting this type of band and who I am.” Furman would probably have seemed fairly unusual in any era, but his distinctiveness shines a little brighter in a world where a lot of rock is painted in neutral shades.Lee Allcock

Only releasing their debut EP ‘Expectations’ one day prior, The

Old Pink House’s headline gig at The Cluny was the perfect opportunity to celebrate their success. Not only this, but it was also their biggest hometown gig to date - and there’s nowhere better to celebrate how far you’ve come than the place where it all started. With support coming from both Penguin and Llovers, the bill showcased just how great the North East music scene is at the moment. Also from Newcastle, Penguin kicked off the night with an incredible start. Albeit a short set, the band managed to pack in tonnes of energy. With musical similarities to The Old Pink House, latest single ‘Get Me Out’ is a treat. The anticipation created from its build-up is truly exciting and just lovely to listen to - an all-around pleasure. Next up were Teesside’s indie pop quintet, Llovers - potentially the dreamiest synth-pop infused live act I’ve ever seen. The band held quite the crowd too, who were especially excitable during obvious fan favourites ‘Feeling Sound’ and ‘I Don’t Mind’. Their sparkling synth and faultless vocals were beautiful. By the time the lights dimmed for The Old Pink House’s performance, it was vividly obvious from the atmosphere that the band are really gaining momentum in the local music scene. The Cluny was packed to the brim with eager gig-goers and there was a pure buzz of excitement whirling around the room.

The crowd surely were alive, with everyone singing and dancing along to songs both new and relatively-old. New releases ‘Jaded’ and ‘Hearts Beat’ seemed to be clear fan favourites, with first ever single ‘So Bad’ also creating quite an amicable stir. Frontman Chris’ vocals were impressively spotless, with the band seemingly thoroughly enjoying themselves on stage. There’s no surprise that final song of the night, ‘Expectations’, welcomed the greatest response. The track’s groovy bass line and splashes of synth create nothing less than something massive and live, the song is even more powerful than on record. As the lights came on and the crowd left the venue, it was obvious that The Old Pink House had left everyone on an ultimate high. Overall the night proved to be yet another great success for the band, and it was an evening that they should be truly proud of. SAMANTHA HALL

When I turn up at The Georgian Theatre I’m surprised by the

distinct lack of people in attendance. However, and thankfully, people appear in time for local band The Filth who first unleashed their punk-rock sound onto the world in 1979. Full of passion and attitude, they start the night with an energy that doesn’t let up until the last note of their set as they deliver songs both old and new. ‘Freedom’ and the superb ‘Rise Of The Mods’ (1979) blend perfectly with ‘Punks and Skins’, and ‘Land That Time Forgot’ from 2015’s The Spoils Of War EP and the more recent, soon to become a live favourite, ‘T-Town’. Second band, Knock Off, deliver hard, fast, sing-along punk. Despite the catchy choruses and bouncy tunes, Andy T, Andy C and Lozz are full of anger as they blast through a set of songs covering the often sorry state of the country, the bullying of the working class by the powerful elite, the terror of Jack The Ripper and, of course, football, beer and punk-rock. Headliners, the sometimes silly, often insulting but always loud, fast, tuneful, danceable and entertaining Dirt Box Disco, are on fine form tonight. Despite the somewhat disappointing turnout – Dirt Box often bring in big crowds but tonight there’s perhaps 140 punters – the band give everything to their performance. Whether this is the first time or the 100th time you’ve seen them, it’s a guarantee that you’ll

be hooked right in by at least one of their many infectious songs. This is a career-covering set with classics ‘Let’s Get Wasted’, ‘I Just Wanna Be A Girl’, ‘Peepshow’ and ‘I Don’t Wanna Go Out With You’ from 2012’s debut album ‘Legends’, together with ‘Teenage Lovestruck Blues’, ‘Mirror Mirror’ and ‘Joyce’s Voices’ from 2018’s ‘Immortals’. Singer WEAB.I.AM and bassist Deadbeatz Chris spend time in the crowd encouraging the general sense of fun/chaos. And of course, everyone loves to sing along to ‘My Life Is Shit’ and the finale which is ‘Dirtbox Days’: “We are Dirt Box, we are bastards and we love it!” Dirt Box aren’t for everyone, but the vast majority here tonight will have headed home humming a tune with a smile on their face. Whatever your stance may be regarding corporate sponsorship of musical events,

Fireball, with their annual hard rock ‘Fire’ tour, deserve praise for investing both cash and promotional opportunities into the rock and punk scenes. Battling it out for a place on the main ‘Fire’ tour, tonight’s ‘Fuelling the Fire’ sees eight bands from the North East and parts of Scotland head-off with a 15-minute, 3-song set. Having been whittled down from over 350 artists, tonight sees some excellent performances from each of the entrants, including Northern Horizon, Deadbeat Paradise, Digits, Thieves of Liberty, LoGoz, Take Today and Too Close For Missiles. Local punks LoGoz deserve credit for a set which is amped, ferocious and full of fun, as do hard rockers Digits who can both feel proud of themselves pushing ultimate winners Thieves of Liberty and Take Today to the finishing line.Well done to Thieves of Liberty and Take Today for their sensational performances. Well done to Fireball for putting on the night. And well done to all of the bands for making tonight a great showcase for emerging talent. DAMIAN ROBINSON

With the event completely sold-out, fans of Llovers were excitable from the

get-go. Opening with ‘Borderlands’ - arguably their finest indie/dream-pop anthem - the crow sang every word of every song back to the band whilst dancing around like nobody was watching.Debuting new track ‘Change’ and playing ‘Go Get Her, Go Getter’ for the first time since its release, it was obvious that the crowd was in for a treat tonight. David Macnab’s and Jack Brooks’ vocals were spotless as usual too, with the band in tip-top shape throughout.Things got all emotional during penultimate track ‘I Don’t Mind’, a twinkling, synth-infused classic that seems to get more and more beautiful with every performance. Finishing with fan favourite ‘Feeling Sound’, this greatly triumphant ending rounded off the night perfectly, leaving the crowd and band-alike on a massive high. It’s clear to see that Llovers well and truly deserve every inch of success they’ve received so far, and I’m incredibly excited to see what the future holds for this sublime Teesside quintet. Sunderland’s Picnic have gigged regularly at venues like Little Buildings in

Newcastle so tonight they make the step up to Think Tank? with complete ease. Opening with a baffling but brilliant cover of Toto’s ‘Africa’, their set is full of hit after hit including the lost in translation love letter that is ‘Bill You Murray Me’ and the sweet tribute ‘Julia’ that already feels like a classic to the excellent turnout. The jazz-pop sound that they have made their own sees each of the seven members able to showcase their talents - and singer Robyn’s exuberance is infectious. Stripping things back to vocals and keys for the tenderly beautiful ‘Bathbomb’ shows a band that aren’t afraid to mix things up, whilst an Abba medley is lapped up by an audience already in rapture. Newer songs like the anthemic ‘Girls Night’ and future single ‘Trying My Best’ promise much, and whilst ‘I Ain’t Got No Money’ is a song for austerity-era Britain, Picnic is a band full of riches. Is guitar music dead? Reflecting back on tonight’s performances by both artists, it’s

most certainly here to stay. California band Vista Kicks, who have never performed in the UK, opened tonight’s guitar-jangling evening with a set that explored the ‘original’ Kings of Leon style of rock ‘n’ roll with and The Beatles’ pop sensibility. With virtuoso vocals, Bee Gees-esque harmonies and intricate guitar playing, this was a set that showcased guitar-focused music in the finest possible light. Now The Kooks’ debut album ‘Inside In/Inside Out’ may have been released some 12 years ago now, but with the average age of the audience approximately the ripe old age of 19, it’s unquestionable that their guitar-led tracks are as popular now as they were over a decade ago. New tracks ‘Pamela’ ‘Four Leaf Clover’ and ‘Fractured and Dazed’ all featured, but it was still the golden oldies including ‘Seaside’, ‘Ooh La’ and ‘Naïve’ that were the highlights of a set that frontman Luke Pritchard wanted to showcase just how important guitar music is – and he succeeded. Were you a pirate, a Viking or just a party animal? Lindisfarne Festival

is over for another year - yes, it’s another 12 months until Beal Farm opens its gates to 5000 souls who are ready to dance, love and laugh like never before. It’s safe to say that the three-day event is blossoming with each passing year and is fast becoming the number one fix for music, the arts and camping. Picture this: waking and escaping the depths of your tent in search of your much-needed caffeine rush, and finding so much more. A breathtaking view of the sunrise over Holy Island, and a fellow, glittery festival-goer clinging onto their Viking hat fondly, along with last night’s memories - what a way to start the day. The smaller capacity of the festival works wonders and makes for an intimate infusion of arts and creativity with every turn. The walk to the main arena is basked in art, fire pits, dancers, fairy lights and fantasy, not to mention a whole load of amazing people. There’s an undeniable, magical energy about the place; and the bass from the music pounds below your feet, like the festival’s very own heartbeat. Recovering from a hangover is never easy work, but Lindisfarne HQ have that covered. Friday evening’s dance tents are transformed into a haven of tranquillity, with yoga and meditation classes soothing the body and mind. Cross over to the other side of the hay bales and find yourself lost in the beautiful sound of Martha Raine, a Lindisfarne-born singer-songwriter gifted with vocals so serene that you’re drawn into her presence. Blessed with a 45-minute set, including a haunting

rendition of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’, festival-goers left replenished and ready for another spectacular day on Beal Farm. Saturday evening saw acoustic-trance pioneers The Showhawk Duo take to the main Shorefields Stage. The pair have an incredible gift, with their virtuosic guitar skills temporarily transporting revellers to an Ibiza club. Smashing out classic after classic, from Tiesto to Daft Punk, crowds were left in a state of euphoria as their epic set drew to a close. Festival headliners The Levellers closed the main stage with a set packed to the brim with fiddles, folk and out-right fun. Although faced with a few minor sound difficulties, the Brighton legends tore through their iconic catalogue of classics, with tracks such as ‘One Way’, ‘Another Man’s Cause’, ‘Riverflow’ and ‘What a Beautiful Day.’ What a beautiful day, indeed. When we caught up with Anthony Vacher earlier in the year, talk was quickly directed towards a stack of material already written, recorded and awaiting release: “Just wait until you hear the new material - it’s some of my best work yet,” was the promise - no pressure there then. Structurally, ‘I’m Home’ builds on similar musical foundations to Vacher’s previous 2018 single, ‘I Don’t Wanna Wake Up”, looking to push a winning combination even further into pop perfection. Focused around strong vocals, deep rhythms and displays of the amount of inner confidence needed for terrifically self-aware lyrics, ‘I’m Home’ sets out to do what the best of pop music should: namely to disguise serious and important messages behind strong melodies and feet-tapping tunes.Clearly, Vacher is aiming for the hallowed Stock, Aitken and Waterman ground with this one – and where we end is not far from the target at all. Close in style to the moments of dynamic acoustic-guitar-meets-pop-rhythms championed by Erasure’s ‘A Little Respect’ or Gary Barlow’s ‘Let Me Go’, ‘I’m Home’ centres around the combination of a strong, repetitive, lead rhythm guitar structure and a Mowtown-sounding drum kick - it’s a technique which provides a jubilant and celebratory feel.Yet as strong as the music is, the track’s real triumphs lie in Vacher’s voice and its storytelling. Led through a narrative which is both confessional and vulnerable, ‘I’m Home’ seeks solace in the belief that a home need not be a physical place, but rather a state of mind, a feeling of belongingness, or the arms of a loved one (“I’m home/When I’m with you I feel home/When I’m with you I’m home”). Paradoxically, our author’s key message is not the ability to know what a home is, rather our ability to be honest with the people we love. How, asks Vacher, can we find the strength to let others know that they’re all that we need? Juxtaposed in its narrative, Vacher’s vocals steal the track with a style of emotive, contrasting, deliveries which provide context to the song and underpin its emotional uncertainty; vulnerable one moment, full of self-belief the next. As difficult as the job should be, Vacher makes it seem rather effortless and simple, allowing his voice to be used as a vehicle to blend a personal story and an upbeat sound together. ‘I’m Home’ is now available to stream/purchase on all digital platforms. JULIE GRANT‘IT’S ME BUT IT’S US’ ALBUM NE VOLUME RATING

Having built a live reputation for excellent musicianship and fine three-part harmonies, it feels relieving to see Julie Grant (the name of both the band and the front person)

capturing their performing sound so well onto record. Part folk, part acoustic and part rollicking pop, ‘It’s Me But It’s Us’ is a great journey across a number of different genres whilst simultaneously locking itself into a continual narrative of personal reflection and introspection. At their best on ‘upbeat’ tracks (album highlights ‘Drive Over Sometime’ and ‘Mother I’ve Won’), the Grant’s kick with some serious clout in a musical style reminiscent of the guitar-driven pop championed by Marr’s swinging Rickenbacker.Finding moments for acoustic sensitivity (‘Something Special’, ‘Over and Out’ and ‘Orange Brain’), ‘It’s Me But It’s Us’ is a full reflection of the human behaviour: moments of excitement followed by moments of sadness. Great work. ‘It’s Me But It’s Us’ by Julie Grant is now on Amazon. DAMIAN ROBINSON

CARYS CALLING‘HONEST’ SINGLE

Returning to music after a three-year hiatus, Newcastle’s Carys Calling is back with a seemingly reinvigorated purpose and intent for her work. Recreating

the effortless melodies and super production of earlier songwriting, ‘Honest’ sees Carys Calling create a style of pop that glistens with a polished sheen whilst being off-set by minimalist electronica. Structured around gentle slightly down-tempo beats, Carys Calling hooks the track around dreamy vocals which remain distant and purposefully emotionally insecure. Reminiscent of the lighter moments of Bat for Lashes or the darker moments of Kylie’s ‘Put Yourself in My Place’ era, ‘Honest’ focuses on a narrative which contemplates human behaviour and questions why societal pressures often nudge us towards exaggeration and expanding the truth. What does being honest mean in a world of fake news? ‘Honest’ is a confident pop song, is well produced and is founded on talented songwriting. FEVA‘UNEASY’ SINGLE

NE VOLUME RATING

A Geordie band pushing themselves to the forefront of the indie-rock scene in Newcastle, if not the North East as a whole, FEVA are certainly causing a stir with their latest single release, ‘Uneasy’. Fast paced and slightly energised by punk influences, ‘Uneasy’ is riotous and full of unrest as frontman Sam Reynolds repeatedly yells: ‘I’m tired

of feeling uneasy’ - a line just waiting to be projected back to the stage at a feverishly raucous live show. Grunge-inspired bass lines take this single to a darker place than previous releases but it never loses that momentous indie-rock quality, rendering it a must-hear for fans of The Amazons and Sundara Karma. This single will ring in your ears for weeks and is the soundtrack to FEVA’s relentlessness in getting to exactly where they want to be – at the forefront of the underground indie-rock scene. Best listened to at full volume, ‘Uneasy’ is available to stream now on Spotify. RACHEL BYROM

LOVE JOCKEY‘LOVE FAST, DIE SLOW’ SINGLE

Love Jockey evidently has a few tricks up his sleeve because his second offering, ‘Love Fast, Die Slow’, may even top his original, ‘Sun Seeker’. ‘Love Fast, Die

Slow’ has the same DNA as ‘Sun Seeker’, but where the latter feels predominantly psychedelic the former leans further into classic rock ‘n’ roll territory. A constant, pounding drum beat gives the track an incredible momentum that never lets up and is only emphasised by Clarkson’s biting lyrics. This song dips into vaguely romantic waters but it is far from a mushy love song – instead, the overall feeling is of seizing opportunities and smashing through glass ceilings. By adhering to conventions and not trying to reinvent the wheel, Clarkson has made a song that when you hear it will make you feel like you’ve known it your entire life. MILNE GLENDINNING BAND‘SOULMATE / BLAME GAME’ EP

Sometimes, after the hustle and bustle of a working day, it’s really nice to sit back and relax to some smooth, original jazz - and you can’t really do much better

than the Newcastle-based jazz quartet the Milne Glendinning Band. The band is rooted in its unity between vocalist Debra Milne and guitarist Stephen Glendinning - and the music definitely reflects this meeting of minds. The track itself feels very traditional until you let the nuances of Milne’s haunting vocal melodies take you away on a journey; the vocals rest snuggly on a bed of smooth jazz riffs and rhythm. The full EP is released on Monday 1st October where it will be available to stream and/or purchase on most digital sites. SPLIT SENTENCE‘FIRST INSTANCE’ EP

North East-based outfit, Split Sentence, released their debut EP just a few short weeks ago. Having formed in January 2018, the alternative rock band were amazingly able to write the core of

the EP within a 48-hour period. Influenced by many modern rock bands such as Foo Fighters, Muse and Sum 41, Split Sentence combine these inspirations to produce a fresh and exciting sound. The strong, raw vocals - along with the passion and energy portrayed throughout the EP - promises that this band will definitely be ones to watch out for in the live scene this year - and I will personally be following their live journey. Having listened to the EP thoroughly, it would be easy to assume that Split Sentence are a long-standing and well-established band as their execution is seamless. STEPHEN MORDUE‘CONNECT YOURSELF’ EP

Tynesider and ballad aficionado Stephen Mordue has been hard at work making some new material for us local music fans to enjoy. His latest EP entitled ‘Connect Yourself’

is out on Tuesday 16th and I managed to obtain a sneak preview before its release. The EP has all the makings of a Stephen Mordue project: traditional and rhythmic guitar riffs set against folky vocals that tell a story with each word. Musicality and simplicity seem to merge to form what I can only describe as an EP that you must sit and truly listen to – this is not background music. Lyrically speaking, this EP is chock full of wisdom and substance. Life, love and everything are between is put into perspective - and it’s a genuine pleasure to listen to. Partnered with the ambitious vocal melodies and the range of notes that Mordue aims for, this EP certainly has the power to reset the soul.
