Effect of elevated CO on crop-weed interaction and herbicide 2

efficacy

Dasari Sreekanth, Pawar Deepak and Shobha Sondhia

Climate change is likely to have a major impact on global

agriculture. Atmospheric CO concentrations have increased at a 2

record-breaking rate to 418 ppm in the year 2021. Weeds may

exhibit differential responses to higher levels of CO and 2

temperature, which can affect the crop-weed competition and

efficiency of herbicides, making weed management a major

challenge for sustainable crop production.

Studies conducted during Kharif 2021 in FACE revealed

that the elevated CO level significantly reduced the efficacy of 2

2,4-D to control Alternanthera paronychioides in direct-seeded rice

resulting in higher reduction of rice yield due to greater weed-

competition compared to ambient condition. The elevated CO 2

significantly increased fresh weight, dry weight and root volume

of Alternanthera by 24.12%, 12.48% and 36.36%, respectively.

Weeds may become more difficult to control under elevated CO 2

due to increase in root biomass.

Modified extraction method to isolate high quality RNA from Parthenium hysterophorus L. root tissues

Pawar Deepak Vishwanath, Dasari Sreekanth, and Shobha Sondhia

Plant roots are the primary organ involved in the abiotic stress sensing. High quality of RNA is essential for carrying out various downstream molecular biology experiments. However, isolating high quality RNA from plant tissues, with enough quality and quantity may be challenging, mainly due to their biochemical composition that can obstruct or even prevent the RNA extraction.

P. hysterophorus can be used as model plant to study the

molecular and physiological mechanisms of stress tolerance. To

standardize the RNA isolation from root tissues, efficacy of 16

existing RNA isolation methods were compared. The PVP-

ethanol precipitation method comparatively gave good quantity

of RNA but with contaminants as indicated by the A and 260/A280

Management of weedy rice through herbicide tolerant rice cultivar

VK Dubey, MP Sahu and VK Choudhary

Weedy rice is an emerging problem in direct-seeded rice

(DSR) in South Asia. It is very difficult to control because of its

phenotypic similarities with cultivated rice. Seed dormancy,

longevity and early shattering further exaggerated the problems.

The yield loss due to weedy rice has been reported by 20-91%

based on their density. It cannot be controlled by recommended

rice herbicides and also by nonprofessional labourers. Therefore,

imazethapyr-tolerant rice (SAVA 134 developed Savanna Seeds)

was used as a potential option to control weedy rice along with

weed complex in DSR.

Application timing of pendimethalin affects its bio-efficacy in direct-seeded rice

MP Sahu, AK Patel and VK Choudhary

Being sensitive to intense light and high temperature,

timing of pendimethalin application is expected to play a

significant role in its efficacy against weeds. Results showed that

application of pendimethalin at 4 PM on a bright sunshine day

with clear weather resulted in

68.2% of weed control efficiency

with 5.37 t/ha of grain yield; and

it was comparable to i ts

application at 8 am (64.8% and

5.28 t/ha). These treatments

were superior to its application

at 10 AM, 12 noon and 2 PM.

Therefore, it is suggested that

pendimethal in should be

applied either during the early

morning or late evening hours

for better weed control.

Optimization of seed rate and weed management in direct-seeded rice

Kalicharan Ahirwar, MP Sahu and VK Choudhary

Weed infestation in direct-seeded rice is very severe,

and sometimes complete crop loss has been recorded. In central

and eastern India, farmers normally use 100 to 150 kg seed/ha.

Therefore, a study was conducted to optimize seed rate and

weed management in DSR. Results revealed that seed rate of 40

kg/ha with pretilachlor + pyrazosulfuron 615 g/ha (PE) fb

cyhalofop + penoxsulam 135 g/ha (Post) can be used for better

weed control, and higher productivity & profitability.

Cellulolytic microbes under different weed management

practicesHimanshu Mahawar, KK Barman and VK Choudhary

Rhizospheric microbes help in increasing crop

production by increasing soil fertility as well as by enhancing the

ability of crop plants in mitigating various biotic and abiotic

stresses. Tillage and herbicides used to manage weeds affect

ecology and biological equilibrium of soil, and thereby the

growth performance of soil microbes. Conservation agriculture

with major emphasis on the practices of zero tillage, residue

recycling and chemical weed management is being advocated

over the traditional intensive tillage based cultivation.

Decomposition of organic matter is a microbial process driven by

a group of microbes collectively known as cellulolytic

microorganisms. The observations recorded during Kharif 2021

showed that in absence of herbicide the population of cellulolytic

microbes in maize rhizosphere was 10.34% higher under ZT

compared to CT, indicating adverse effect of tillage on this

population. Application of atrazine (PE) fb topramezone (Post)

decreased the cellulolytic population by 41% under CT and 33%

under ZT. Interestingly, under integrated weed management

treatment (Atrazine fb hand pulling of weeds), the cellulolytic

population was reduced by 31% under CT but it increased by

10% under ZT. These observations indicated that topramezone

was harmful for the cellulolytic microbes and the effect was more

intense in CT than ZT.

can be saved. The developed system costs only Rs. 3000/. Further, as it is attached to sowing/planting machine, it also saves the operational cost of herbicide application.

The system is having two plastic tanks of 50 litres

capacity each for storage of herbicide. The tanks are mounted at

both sides of planter/seeder on a base frame. The diaphragm

spray pump is connected to each tank to pressurize the liquid.

The outflow of pumps are combined and made into a single

liquid flow path that passes through a Solenoid valve, and finally

to nozzles for liquid atomization. A 12 VDC solenoid valve was

used in the system to regulate the herbicide liquid flow by using

relay switch and microcontroller based electronic circuit. A 12

VDC battery was used as power source for spray pumps, micro-

controller based electronic unit and solenoid valve. The

microcontroller was programmed in such a way that when Hall

detects a magnetic field it gives

a signal to relay-switch to get off

and vice-versa. Power to

solenoid valve is supplied

through relay switch. When

relay switch gets off, so does the

solenoid valve and the flow of

herbicide. Likewise, when relay

switch gets on, solenoid valve

get switched on and allows the

herbicide solution to pass

through.

Tree plantation A tree plantation event with the theme of 'Har Med Par

rdPed' was organized on the eve of ICAR's 93 ICAR Foundation thDay, the 16 July, 2021. All the staff including contractual farm

workers attended the event. In the beginning, Dr. JS Mishra, Director, ICAR-DWR urged that, while going to the villages under various ongoing programmes like Mera gaon mera gaurav, SCSP, OFR, etc., the scientists and other technical staff should use every opportunity to make the farmers aware about the theme

'Har Med Par Ped'. The farmers should be encouraged to plant suitable food trees along the farm bunds, so that they can get some extra income besides benefiting the environment without affecting the production of field crops. On this occasion, 250 saplings of karaunda, drumstick and jackfruit trees were planted along the Directorate's research farm boundary.

Media Campaign on Agro-waste utilizationCampaigning through SMS, WhatsApp messages,

Facebook, Twitter handle and Website of the Directorate was carried out throughout the month of July 2021 for increasing awareness and encouraging the farmers to utilize agro-wastes and weed biomass for compost preparation. A video on vermi-compost preparation using water hyacinth, and an extension folder in pdf format on composting of Parthenium biomass were uploaded in the Directorate's digital media accounts, and the links were communicated to the
