“What does (insert a two-digit number between 20-99) mean to you?”

Be a number detective to find the answer.

Curriculum Task: Students will demonstrate their understanding of a nominated two-digit number (between 20–99) by using some of the following:

drawing pictures

including diagrams such as MAB blocks, ten frames, part-part whole models, Unifix cubes, number tracks, number lines and tally marks

photographs of the number represented on real life objects eg. house numbers, tickets

number stories

words and numbers

looking at number patterns (e.g. skip counting in twos, fives, etc.)

writing horizontal or vertical + and – algorithms (sums) The completed work should:

be presented in a poster format selected by the teachers

identify and represent the nominated two-digit number in a variety of ways

represent student’s understanding of place value of the nominated two-digit number

Technologies – Design - Year 1

Prepared at School

Curriculum Task: Students will follow the process of design, make and appraise to create a paper plate puppet for a real purpose. They will create scientific drawings and write a procedure. Students will make a judgement about the effectiveness of their puppet for the design purpose, and consider how they could make changes to improve this effectiveness. The completed work should include the following:

A purpose statement regarding the use of puppets in general.

A list of the materials needed to create a paper plate puppet and their suitability.

A name for the puppet and its role.

An explanation as to how it will move.

A diagram which includes labels for different parts and materials used.

A list of steps followed to make the puppet.

An evaluation and a statement about how they could make improvements to their puppet.

Technologies entries are to be completed in the classroom by Friday 9 August .

The Arts - Year 1

Frogs and their Habitat

Based on the Literary text ‘Lester and Clyde’ by James H. Reece

Curriculum Task: Students will consider the habitat of a frog. They will experiment with tones of blues and greens as well as texture to create an interesting background. They will apply line and pattern to the scribbly gums in the middle ground and have the opportunity to learn new drawings and collage skills to create a frog hidden behind a lily pad in the foreground. As an extension, students can apply additional details such as leaves, vines and flowers; for example. The Visual Art entry will include:

a background, middle ground and foreground;

tone and texture in the background;

pattern and line on the trees;

a collaged frog that has been successfully drawn in the foreground; and

optional details as an extension.

Entries will be completed during Visual Art lessons with Mrs Barry in Term 3.

As part of the 2019 Holland Park Excellence Expo we invite students to participate in the Art Exhibition with the theme “The Great Outdoors ”. This task will be done at school with a mentor . This exhibition will give the students the opportunity to display their artistic abilities in a variety of visual art forms. Entries can be either 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional using any materials and may also include photography, sculpture, collage, painting and sketching.

3D entries need to be no larger than 1m x 1m on a stable base.

Visual Art - Year 1

Frogs and their Habitat

Based on the Literary text ‘Lester and Clyde’ by James H. Reece

Curriculum Task: Students will consider the habitat of a frog. They will experiment with tones of blues and greens as well as texture to create an interesting background. They will apply line and pattern to the scribbly gums in the middle ground and have the opportunity to learn new drawings and collage skills to create a frog hidden behind a lily pad in the foreground. As an extension, students can apply additional details such as leaves, vines and flowers; for example. The Visual Art entry will include:

a background, middle ground and foreground;

tone and texture in the background;

pattern and line on the trees;

a collaged frog that has been successfully drawn in the foreground; and

optional details as an extension.

Entries will be completed during Visual Art lessons with Mrs Barry in Term 3.

Visual Art entries are due Thursday 5 September in the E Block Staffroom between 8:30-9:30am

A Kite Displaying Geographical Features

Prepared at School

Curriculum Task: Students will examine natural, managed and constructed features of objects in Australia and Japan. They will also examine the structure of kites and then construct and fly their own kites. The students will draw one of the three types of features (natural, managed or constructed) on the Japanese section and Australian section of the kite.

The completed work should:

Have an original crayon and texta decorative finish covering the surfaces of the kite.

Have a geographical feature (natural, managed or constructed) on both the Australian and Japanese sections of the kite.

Geographical features should be distinguishable.

Have visual impact.

Include student’s name and grade.

Asian Studies entries are due on Thursday 5 September between 8:30 – 9:15am under D Block (OHSC area).
