VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur signed an MOU with TATA Institute of Social
Sciences, Mumbai in the year 2013. The purpose of the MOU was to increase the
employability and making students enable to be effective contributors to the nation’s growth
and development. Shri Shankaracharya Mahavidyalaya, Bhilai became an active member of
the programme and also the training centre of the pilot project for three years. The
programme was started by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Government of India, Office of the
Advisor to the Prime Minister on Skill Development and Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
The programme National University Student’s Skill Development (NUSSD) is a vocational
skill development scheme for youth in the higher education system.
The concept was to run the pilot project for three years by partnering with APM office and
TISS. The idea was to enable the youth enrolled for NSS also to acquire skills that would
give them a diploma which covered all young people in the university to enhance their skills
with the graduate degree in their chosen discipline. The NUSSD was started in the academic
year 2013 in 11 universities for 3 years. The activities of NSS were allocated 120 hours each
for 2 starting years. Also, it was decided that on the succession of Phase I and Phase II the
third phase will be launched for the enrolled students. It was a check project to increase the
employability skill of the students.
The main purpose of the programme was to impart employment enhancing skills of students
enrolled in a degree programme at the university and affiliated colleges through the NUSSD.
The skill development program was aimed at fostering inner potential in students, stimulate
their critical thinking and increase their skills. The objective of the course is clear; significant
growth in the employability of students in the university and affiliated colleges of the
NUSSD scheme, accredit students in Vocational Education in addition to the university
graduate degree.
The NUSSD Vocational Education courses were designed on an integrated framework that
pedagogically links academic course content, skill training and application for well-being
educational experience. In addition to the Vocational education the courses also fostered
inner capacities of students, inculcating within them values of civic responsibility; and build
their competencies to work effectively in complex, inter-related environments. The areas in
which the enrolled students gained knowledge were:
Vocational Education: Foundation Skills (Phase I) – for all students enrolled
1. English Communication
2. Youth Leadership & People Skills
3. Legal Literacy
4. Financial Literacy
5. Digital Literacy
6. Working with Communities (leading to a field practicum)
Vocation Education in Domain (Phase II) – students can choose any one or two inter-
related skill areas in their second and third years of graduation.
1. Entrepreneurship
2. Entrepreneurship with specialization in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) or Media
and Entertainment or Agriculture or Travel and Tourism or Healthcare etc.
3. Agriculture (Agri – Allied Services and Animal Husbandry, Agri Business Management)
4. Financial Management and Services
5. Healthcare (Healthcare Services Management, Physician Assistant)
6. Travel and Tourism
7. Media and Entertainment
8. HR and Sales
9. Industrial Safety
10. Construction Management
The trainers were from the expert level identified by the TISS of the respective domain;
academia, industry, government, autonomous bodies and civil society to deliver course
modules including lectures, tutorials and fieldwork. Enrollment of the teachers and trainers
was done for each of the domain areas. The teachers and trainers working or retired from the
fields served for NUSSD programme. NGOs and support agencies, industries and businesses
were identified and enrolled to facilitate fieldwork.
TISS approved Certificate and Diploma co-branded with industry/ academic partner were
also awarded to students. The purpose behind the Certificate and Diploma were to add an
extra plus with the normal graduation degree; thus increasing the employability of the
students. The certificates were approved by the academic council of the TISS in all courses
which encouraged students in their respective field.
OUTCOME:
The target was to enable students to gain certification at the end of Phase I and a Diploma at
the end of Phase II in the respective domain. The number of students enrolled was determined
by the University and selected colleges:
1. More than 50000 skilled graduates as transformational leaders in the Pilot Phase; and
considerably expanded to cover all colleges.
2. The cutting-edge curriculum helped to develop capability, personality, confidence and
thus employability of young graduates in arts, science, commerce, humanities and
social sciences (80% of all students in the university system).
3. All modules were available in print at the end of the Phase I.
4. Also, skilled trainers available at the regional and professional front.
5. The universities also made a sustainable impact on the employability of the young
graduates.

ACTIVITIES: NUSSD-TISS
In the session 2015-16, 2017-18 & session 2018-19, more than 75 students from the college enrolled in NUSSD, TISS. The programme was not only successful but highly informational for the students. They learned various aspects of the society and life besides the job prospects. The glimpses of various activities organised by the NUSSD, TISS are as under:
CHILDREN DAY
On 14th
November, students enrolled with NUSSD programme celebrated National
Children’s Day with the students of Government School at the village Khapri. NUSSD
students organized different activities for the school students: learning with fun, chat making,
group activities were few of them.
SWACHCH BHARAT ABHIYAN: SURVEY OF THE VILLAGE KHAPRI
The NUSSD team of the college visited the adopted village Khapri on a survey. The team
members met the villagers and spread the message of Swachch Bharat Abhiyan. There were
NUSSD students of three colleges in the survey. Students trained villagers about the basic
hygiene and the cleanliness they, on the other hand, learned ethics and principles from the
villagers. Students also learned about equality, co-operation and team work from the
villagers.
VISIT TO SARAS MELA:
On 16th and 17th December 2017, students of the college enrolled with NUSSD, TISS visited
the Saras Mela organized by the district Panchayat department, Durg in support with the
Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. Students met the Self-Help Groups
(SHG) and learned about the formation of SHGs and the difficulties faced by them. They also
explored some possible solutions for the SHGs.

VISIT TO THE SOUND RECORDING STUDIOS:
Under the Digital Literacy course of NUSSD, TISS, students visited the recording studio in
May 2017. Students explored about the technicalities behind the sound recording and the also
met the people involved behind the sound effect in a clip. A small introduction-cum-lecture
was presented by Mr Benny Paul in which he explained about the journey that the sound
recording has covered from past many decades. The information was not useful but was an
eye-opening for the students. Students also tried their hand at recording and editing a song at
the recording studio. The was fun and helped students to know the other field of employment
than the conventional ones.
SURVEY OF THE SLUMS AT SHAHID VIR NARAYAN SINGH NAGAR, BHILAI ON
OPEN DEFECATION
A team of NUSSD, TISS students of SSMV, surveyed the slums of the Shahid Vir Narayan
Singh Nagar, Bhilai. Under the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, NUSSD team informed slum
people about the hazards of open defecation. They also described about various schemes the
government of India has started to stop open defecation, like; building toilets both at home
and at nearby places and funds that the government provide to build toilets. Students also
informed people about the proper sanitation system and the advantages of maintaining
hygiene.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING PROGRAMME CONDUCTED BY SHRI

Our College (Shri Shankaracharya Mahavidyalaya Junwani, Bhilai) in collaboration with
Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development & ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu signs
MoU for “Employability Skills Training “for graduating SC / ST students. The training is for
the Arts, Science and Commerce students. The objective is to get the students ready for
employment and create employment opportunities. The training is to be conducted for 1000
SC / ST students across the Country. We got the privilege to start the programme First in
whole India with a pool of 40 students from 20 February 2016 to 16 March 2016 for
Certificate Course in Banking, Financial & Insurance Sector (BFSI).

NATIONAL LEVEL YOUTH ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
In ssmv 05 days training program of National level youth entrepreneurship development
programme was conducted for student of management (BBA) in collaboration with Rajiv
Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Government of India and ICT Academy of
Tamil Nadu during the year 2015-2016. 40 student of BBA participated in this training
program .Main object of the program was to enable the student of development as innovators
and entrepreneurs.
