OMAK — Commencement is planned at 1 p.m. June 6 for Omak High School and High-lands High School seniors.
“The newly approved plans for the 2020 com-mencement proceedings are much different from all previous graduation traditions, but the new plans include allowable accommoda-tions under the current COVID-19 restrictions,” said Principal David Kirk in a letter to seniors.
The plan has been approved by Okanogan County Pub-lic Health Officer Dr. John McCarthy.
Caps and gowns were dis-tributed May 22, and senior checkout will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 4 in front of the high school.
Pictures in caps and gowns, with awards and stoles, will be from 9 a.m. to noon June 5 in the student commons.
A senior parade kicks off graduation day, with staging at 12:30 p.m. at North Omak Ele-mentary School. KOMW Radio will do a live broadcast from the parade routes.
Omak Police Department will lead seniors’ vehicles to Omak High School, 20 S. Cedar St., where seniors will pick up their diplomas, awards, plaques and certificates.
Omak School District will stream diploma reception on Facebook Live.
“Omak High School realizes that this shift in the graduation traditions our community loves has caused sadness for many people,” Kirk wrote. “In spite of these circumstances out of our control, we want to honor and celebrate our seniors and their families for persevering not only through the school years but also through these trying times.”
The class motto is “This being our final walk together … as you take that last step, think back and ask yourself, ‘Where would we be without each other?’”

Okanogan seniors are ‘just trying to graduate’By DEE CAMPThe Chronicle
OKANOGAN — Seniors at Okanogan High School chose a motto that may reflect the sentiments of many seniors this year: “I’m just trying to graduate.”
Instead of the traditional ceremony in Dawson Gym, coronavirus concerns led school offi-cials to plan a drive-up cere-mony in front of the gym. The event starts at 5 p.m. June 6
“We have been working hard on trying to get a tradi-tional gradua-tion ceremony but with state health regu-lations and advice from the Office of Superinten-dent of Public Instruction, we have decided to celebrate” seniors’ suc-cesses with the drive-up cer-emony, said a letter to seniors from Principal Bob Shacklett.
He noted that two class members plan to enter military service June 8, so the original June 6 date was retained.
“The class of 2020 will go down in history as one that is brave and resilient due to the tough situation that you were put in,” Shacklett continued. “Your future is what you will
make of it, and I am certain it will be bright.”
The class has three co-vale-dictorians: Kaedn Daling, son of Michelle and Kevin Daling; Abbigail Popelier, daughter of Anthony and Heather Popelier, and Olivia Richards, daughter of John and Angela Richards.
Salutatorian is Rebecca Haw-ley, daughter of Anthony and Crystal Hawley, and Angie and James Rettstatt.
For the ceremony, graduates are allowed to decorate their cars, with one graduate per car. Each also will have a driver.
Staging will be at 4:40 p.m. in the Okanogan County Public Utility District parking lot, 1331 N. Second Ave. Valedictorians and the salutatorian will be in
front of the procession. Each graduates, in cap and
gown, will be seated in the pas-senger seat of his or her car.
High school staff will line up along South Fifth Avenue, starting in front of the middle school.
“This will give graduates an opportunity to say goodbye and thank you to teachers and staff,” according to printed gradua-tion procedures. “Proper social distancing measures will be established to ensure the safety of staff.”
In front of the school, to the strains of “Pomp and Circum-stance,” each graduate will get out of the car and pick up his or her diploma. Teacher Aaron Nickelson will announce the graduate’s name.
Photos will be taken and scholarships announced.
Daling, Richards, Popelier and Hawley will give their speeches as they arrive.
The ceremony will be streamed on Facebook Live for family and friends who cannot participate.
Teachers Ron Cate and Zach Spaet will broadcast the cere-mony on radio.
Class color is teal and the flower is the carnation. The class song is “Back Home,” by Andy Grammer.

Bridgeport celebrates seniors June 5By DEE CAMPThe Chronicle
BRIDGEPORT — The class of 2020 will celebrate graduation at 5 p.m. June 5 with an uncon-ventional commencement cer-emony brought on because of coronavirus concerns.
Seniors, in caps and gowns, will ride in decorated vehicles with one or two seniors per vehicle.
Lineup is at 4:30 p.m. on the street in front of the shop and basketball court, and in front of the middle school.
Starting at 5 p.m., graduate vehicles will move to the high school parking lot for each senior to receive a diploma cover at the end of the parking lot next to the soccer field. Pho-tos and a video will be taken of seniors receiving their diploma covers.

Valley College commencement ceremonies for both campuses will take place online.
College leadership, in part-nership with the student senate, decided that an in-person 2020 graduation will not be held because of safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

No date was announced.Students had to submit
applications for graduation to the registration office by May 1 to ensures that their diploma is created and that their name appears in the graduation pro-gram. Students who are gradu-ating in 2020 are also invited to
walk in the in-person ceremony in 2021.
The associate degree nursing pinning ceremonies for both campuses also will take place virtually, with no in-person gatherings planned.
WVC classes will remain online until the end of spring
quarter. College leadership has not
yet made a decision to move summer or fall quarters online. If action is taken to move classes online after spring quar-ter, students and the commu-nity will be notified, said college officials.

PATEROS — A commence-ment ceremony is set for June 12 for Pateros High School seniors, but details hadn’t been worked out as of the graduation section’s deadline.
At the end of April, school board members set out three scenarios:
• If social distancing
guidelines are still in effect, graduation would take place at Memorial Park with fireworks afterward.
• If social distancing guide-lines have been lifted, a normal graduation ceremony would be in the school gym.
• If stay-at-home guide-lines are still in effect, a
virtual graduation ceremony is planned.
School officials say they’re leaning toward a combination of a virtual graduation cere-mony with a live parade for students to be recognized and to collect diplomas. A fireworks show is tentatively planned.
Final details will be posted
on the district website, www.pateros.org and Facebook page.

Seniors reflect on high school, the futureThe Chronicle invited valedictorians and salutatorians from each school in its coverage area to submit their speeches, since many will not be able to deliver their reflections on school and life to as wide an audience as normal. Responses were received from Okanogan and Omak, but no other schools. Here are the speeches of the class of 2020’s co-valedictorians and salutatorian.
This is a major step in journeyBy KAEDN DALING
Co-valedictorian, Okanogan High School
Being a part of the class of 2020 at Okanogan High School has been an amazing experience.
Countless memories have been made, bonds have been strengthened, and my love for this town has grown tremendously.
We finally did it! We all accomplished one of the major
early milestones of our lives: Graduating from Okanogan High School.
This is a major step in the journey of our lives, one that should be recognized for its immense significance. It is an act not only of personal com-mitment, but also one of pride.
We all have worked very hard to make it to this spot in our lives and the work we have put in has not been wasted.
I want to thank our families, teachers, and the administra-tion for guiding us along the way. Without your constant support, we would not be where we are today.
To the class of 2020, I have
enjoyed every single moment I have gotten to spend with you. I could not be luckier to have made friends with all of you. The bond that we have created will never be broken.
We have helped each other accomplish many things in and outside of school. Tournaments have been won, tests have been passed, and we still are macho volleyball/powderpuff football champions.
I wouldn’t have wanted to have graduated with any other class. I want to thank you for all the memories.
I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
Go Bulldogs!
You’re never ready for it to endBy ABBIGAIL M. POPELIER
Co-valedictorian, Okanogan High School
After a few hours of revising the valedictorian speeches I’ve been writing since first grade, I’ve realized that you’re never really ready for the end.
That’s because it isn’t the end that counts; it’s the process, the journey, and what you do with your time that really counts.
In my time here as an Okano-gan Bulldog, I’ve been fortunate enough to learn about life; life
lessons, life skills, life regrets, and how to live my own life.
I’d like to thank all of my past and present teachers for instill-ing in me the love of learning and teaching these lessons.
Given that I’ve only been in school approximately 30 percent of my life, I’d also like to thank our community for teaching me how to contribute to society and how to take care of what matters most.
I couldn’t have asked for a better community to grow up within.
I want to thank the business owners of Okanogan and Omak for teaching me how to speak to others and for supporting me in my rodeo endeavors.
I’d like to give a big thank you
to the students at Okanogan, whom I’ve had the pleasure of walking the halls with.
I couldn’t be any prouder of the people you’re becoming or to be able to call you my friends. I hope you all embrace the time you have left and make the most of every opportunity.
Lastly, I wish to thank my fellow seniors. You guys are the reason I’ve loved school, and I could never thank you enough for all you have done for me. There’s much more I wish I could say, but for now I hope this will do.
Thank you, Okanogan, for everything you have done for our class and community. I’ll see you at graduation, God bless you.
We are resilient, determinedBy OLIVIA RICHARDS
Co-valedictorian, Okanogan High School
To the community that raised the class of 2020, I am beyond honored to have the opportunity to thank every-one who has played a role in shaping this senior class into the individuals we are today.
I can attest to the fact that we weren’t the easiest group of kids to raise … we were the class to try new things, the class that asked for “harder math ques-tions” in first grade, the class that didn’t care what people
thought of us, if we wanted to change something … we changed it.
We may have been stubborn, but that stubbornness has grown into a determination to strive for success in whatever we set our minds to.
We’ve all heard it … we were born right after the attacks of 9/11, and now we are graduat-ing during a pandemic.
Yes, we know; but what does that say about us? We are a symbol of resilience and strength, a promise of hope for the future of our community.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are trendsetters — we’ve had to be.
The class of 2020 is caring, yet fierce; quiet, yet bold; proud, yet humble.
We have everything needed
to conquer the challenges of this world, and as we move on to the next chapter, I have no doubt that we will continue to be trendsetters.
Our class has it all: We have entrepreneurs, linemen, educators, athletes, business-men, electricians and doctors. Although many of us are appre-hensive about our futures, I have no doubt that we will con-tinue to be stubbornly deter-mined, strong, and resilient individuals that we’ve always been.
To the community that raised the class of 2020, thank you for investing in us, root-ing for us, and supporting us through every obstacle we’ve encountered.
We are beyond thankful for you!
This year does not define usBy REBECCA HAWLEY
Salutatorian, Okanogan High School
I am so proud to be a member of this class and to be graduating from Okanogan High School.
I have been very blessed to grow up in Okanogan for my whole life, along with sev-eral of my fel-low graduates.
We have made countless mem-ories between the walls of our high school, and none of them will ever be forgotten.
My four years at Okanogan
have gone by much faster than I ever anticipated, and although our last year here as seniors was cut short, this year does not define us.
We are all strong young men and women; Okanogan High School has made sure of that.
The teachers and staff are incredible, and have gone above and beyond to prepare us for our futures.
I want to thank the commu-nity for always being so support-ive of the younger generation.
Every single one of our local businesses who have sponsored our clubs, sports teams, booster club, and individual students have played a huge role in our success throughout high school.
I couldn’t imagine graduat-ing from any other school than Okanogan.
The atmosphere and expecta-tions in Okanogan are so much different than those of our sur-rounding schools, and I think that is what will set us apart from our peers.
Leaving this chapter of our lives is scary and intimidating to say the least, but I know that we are all incredibly capable and prepared to take on the world.
I am excited to watch my classmates find success in our coming years, and I couldn’t be prouder to be an Okanogan Bulldog.
Congratulations, Okanogan High School class of 2020.

Be worthy of this historic hourBy JOSH LESTER
Valedictorian, Omak High School
Blood alone moves the wheels of history!
Have you ever asked yourselves in an hour of meditation, which every-one finds during the day, how long we have been striving for greatness?
Not only the years we’ve been at war, the war of school, but from the moment as a child when we realized that the world could be
conquered. It has been a life-time struggle, a never-ending fight! I say to you and you will understand that it is a privi-lege to fight!
We are warriors! Graduates of Omak High School Class of 2020, I ask you once more: Rise and be worthy of this historical hour!
Some people will tell you that a Pioneer is a bad word. They’ll conjure up images of hillbillies and rednecks.
This is our duty: To change their perception.
I say graduates … and grad-uates of Omak Class of 2020, unite! We must never acqui-esce for it is together, together that we prevail! We must never cede control of the motherland! For it is together
that we prevail! I hope you guys understood
that office reference. If not, that might’ve been pretty weird. If you want to under-stand you can just look up Dwight’s speech on Google. Hopefully I wasn’t too far off.
Well, you guys, we’re here. Pandemic or not, we’re done with high school. Although there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world right now, I know we’ll make it through to the other side.
Thank you, guys, for all the memories and the last 15 years. Thank you to all our amazing teachers and staff at OHS, OMS, East, North and everywhere in between.
You all mean the world to us. Thank you.
This life is full of obstaclesBy TYLER WORDEN
Salutatorian, Omak High School
Omak High School class of 2020, good afternoon and welcome to our unique graduation. As we entered high school, the theme was 2020 Vision, but no one could have seen this gradu-ation coming.
Instead of spending the past few months cherishing our last moments together, we have been apart. Instead of knowing when our last day of school would be, it came as a surprise. We are the class who won’t have our spring senior nights, a senior banquet, or a safe and sober party.
Not to mention that we are missing out on the graduation cer-emony we have been looking for-ward to since elementary school. We have been battling senioritis all year and adding online classes has only made completing our work
harder. Some of us have had Mr. Strig-
gow in sixth and seventh grades, along with freshman, junior and senior years. I am one of those students. Anyone who has been around Striggow has heard his iconic quote: “Life’s hard and then you die.”
However, I believe there is more. Yes, right now life is hard. This isn’t news to anyone, but we have been through hardships before. We have faced record-setting fires and floods.
Life is full of obstacles that each one of us is faced with. In the past, our community has come together to overcome these obstacles and supported one another. Now, even though we are distanced, our community has continued to come together to recognize our accomplishments and celebrate this milestone.
This year we are facing an obstacle we have never faced before: A pandemic. There are many different ways we can respond. Some may let this end to our senior year define them, others will not.
Each one of us has the power to decide if this obstacle is a bump in the road or the end of the road. We can allow this chapter of our lives to be the best it gets or we can start a new chapter and work to make each chapter in our lives better than the last.
No matter where we go after graduation, let’s continue to improve our lives and better ourselves.
Our class is strong together. Over the past four years we have improved tremendously. We began high school as a group of kids dressed as trees trying to lip-sync. Since then we have grown into a team that has not only had the best lip-syncs, but has won homecom-ing two years in a row and we are the reigning class of the year.
I challenge my class to move beyond this moment. I have no doubt that as we move forward each of us will be able to reach the new goals we set for ourselves. In the years to come, I look forward to sharing our accomplishments.
We are strong! We are resilient! We are Pioneers!
