INSIGHT

The COVID-19 Pandemic and closure of the classroomteaching since March 2020 brought new challenges to thedepartment to sustain the engagement with the studentsduring the lockdown period and to keep the learningenvironment alive within the virtual environment. Justimmediately after the closure of colleges was announced, the department encouraged the teachers to use variousavailable online video platforms to conduct classes fromhome. Video conferencing platforms like Zoom®, Google-meet®, Gotomeeting®, Jiomeet®, etc. (depending on internetbandwidth availability) were adopted by the facultymembers to deliver lectures and content directly to thestudents joining from their home or their place of living.

The Civil Engineering Department of AEC made all effortsto ensure the same quality of education even through theonline mode. The department took a very compassionateview while engaging with the students online byconsidering their geographic location, their availableresources, network connectivity and coverage, and theirphysical and mental health condition during thislockdown period. The department encouraged the facultyto adopt both active and passive methods of engagementbased on the feedback and response collected during theonline classes from time to time. The 2016-20 batchappeared in all their final exams including the finalsemester project viva and the grand viva in online mode. The department with its dedicated and sincere efforts fromthe teachers made sure that the final year students didn’tlose any job opportunity and get their degree on time. Withall the uncertainties tackled online, the department wasable to tide over the initial pandemic period and the evensemester of the year 2020 pretty well.

Since the unlocking of physical classrooms in collegewas delayed further due to the pandemic and the odd

semester session of 2020 was also declared online by thegovernment, the department took this phase of difficultyas an opportunity to build capacity in the online LearningManagement System for future application. Thedepartment pioneered the start of scheduled and systematiconline classes for the session by strictly following aschedule for the entire semester. The online classes for thesession started on 17th August 2020 with an interactivesession each with all the three undergraduate semesters.Four classes of 55-minute duration were scheduled everyday for every semester with a 30-minute break in betweenthe second and third lecture of the day. The departmentalso decided to record all the lectures taken by the teachersand upload the recordings for ready reference to thestudents. It helped students who are deprived of goodinternet connectivity. Similarly, M.Tech 1st semester andB.Tech 1st semester courses were also started in onlinemode from 3rd November, 2020.

To enhance their understanding, faculty membersshared slides and videos during the lectures. These visualelements have significantly improved the learning graphof attentive students. During the online engagements, thefaculty members ask questions to students randomly tobring attention to the dormant participants. Theassignments have been allotted at the end of the lecturesthrough the Google classroom platform which is also openfor any vibrant range of queries. The basic design elementof these assignments is the application of the knowledgeimparted during the day’s lecture.

To ensure the punctual submission by all the students, assignments are tagged with clock timing in GoogleClassroom®. The Google classrooms®, over the period, evolved as an online library for the students as it is

attributed to the storage of all the lecture notes, relatedpdfs, and video links.

The online class tests were held through the web-basedStudent Portal with both MCQs and online submissionwith the time limit. The students need to access their portalaccount through one device and remain connected by thezoom video call through another device for surveillanceand ethical purposes.

The department also took the first step to start thelaboratory classes of the 5th semester B.Tech students instaggered phases. In Phase-I, 33 students from Guwahatiand nearby areas attended the laboratory classes ofGeotechnical, Transportation, and EnvironmentalEngineering in groups of 11 for fifteen days. In phase-II,44 students attended the same laboratory classes foranother fifteen days. The students submitted the necessarydeclaration forms and undertakings before attending those

classes and maintained social distancing and othergovernment protocols on covid-19 while attending theclasses. The department also took a great initiative byrecording all the laboratory experiments as well and thensharing the same with the remaining students who wereunable to attend the laboratory classes physically.

Apart from the regular classes, the department alsoorganized two faculty development programs, twowebinars, and one workshop in online mode during thelockdown period. While the entire nation was underlockdown, the department of civil engineering, AssamEngineering College made a persistent effort to engage withthe future engineers and reflected the adaptability ofengineering students to changing environment and abilityto work together for “sustainability” under the globalpandemic situation.

“Survey Camp” has always been an integral part of thecurriculum of undergraduate program in the departmenttill the year 2020. Initially, it used to be hosted outside the

college campus. The students guided by an entourage ofprofessors used to camp in a forested area in close vicinityof Guwahati city. These survey camp used to be a 15-daylong fun filled memorable affair for the students. Whilethe boys used to spend their nights in pitched tents, whereas village homestays/nearby guest houses orinspection bungalows were arranged for the girls. Theseoutdoor survey camps saw a metamorphic transitionowing to the growing insurgency problem in Northeast-India during the mid 1980s.

Post this turbulent phase, survey camps were hostedwithin the AEC campus. Also, the duration of the surveycamp was reduced from 15 days to 7 days. A few of thepioneering figures of this event are Dr. ManoranjanKalita (currently Principal of Don Bosco EngineeringCollege), Dr. U.K. Miri, who were no less than a mascotwhen it came to hosting survey camps. Survey camps

start with rigorous surveying work of a specified areaand then translating the work to a beautiful map. It endswith a viva examined by an external followed by thesubmission of the campus maps. The Civil EngineeringDepartment organises a grand feast on the last day of thesurvey camp. This fiesta night is one of the most memorablenights in the life of every civil engineering student. Thenight is packed with a musical euphoria followed byseveral impromptu performances by the students as wellas the consummate professors.

But, with the revised syllabus, survey camp of the year2020 may become the last of its kind in AEC and thedecade long tradition may come to an end. MurchanaChoudhury, a B.E. 7th semester student who attendedthe last survey camp under the Gauhati Universitysyllabus penned down her experiences as followed-

Right after the hefty occasion of Magh Bihu, I alongwith the rest of my classmates was called by thedepartment for Survey camp 2020. We were divided ingroups of five members each and assigned differentlocations in AEC campus .The camp spanned for 10 dayswithin which we were required to perform differentsurveying experiments and generate a map of the locality.

I and my team were assigned the area from Hostel-8playground to AEC gate and I can still remember it to beone of the most hectic days of college life for the 5th semesterstudents. From surveying the roads to the hostel fields andcompounds we did all what it took to make our map asexact as possible.

The last day of survey camp was the most exciting one.The evening was momentous with camp fire lit, gamesbeing played, songs sung by our faculties and students aswe danced our hearts out and enjoyed the scrumptiousdinner together

Life’s most persistent and relentless question is, “Whatare you doing for others?” 2020 crash landed us from thetopmost berth of the Ferris wheel. While the privilegedsection endured the injuries with a few bruises, the otherswere entangled in a fatal choke. Yes, we were officiallyliving amidst a pandemic! Keeping in mind the richeconomic diversity prevailing in our nation, thiscatastrophe seemed to be the dawn of a forlorn and animpeccably bitter tornado which had just crossed thethreshold of our nation. The worst affected were thestranded migrants. With a suspense weighing 100 tonnesmore than a Steven Spielberg’s movie, everyone frequentlykept checking the news updates. This was the time todescend the throne as a covid warrior, help our strandedbrothers and sisters, rejuvenate the essence of communityservice.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of Health, Assam, launched one of the most extended and pioneeringmigrant outreach programs in India- “Assam’s MigrantOutreach Program”. The government collaborated withKRAN Consulting, led by Mr Ajith Kumar and developedan application which allowed people stranded in otherstates to give a missed call on the helpline number.Subsequently they could submit their bank details to availfinancial assistance through govt channel. A databasewas created through the collected information and across check was run on the ground level by the DC,wherein several NGOs and volunteers were linked in.The sailor of this ship was Ms Pomi Baruah, DeputySecretary, Health and Family Welfare, OSD, NHM Assam, who stabilised the ship amidst the turbulent currents. With a construct that “small acts, when multiplied bydozens of people, can transform the world” thegovernment of Assam roped in more than 150 volunteersfrom Assam Engineering College for the outreachprogramme. Several professors from our institutionextended their helping hand including Dr Sasanka BorahSir who invigilated the progress of the volunteers fromthe Civil Department.

Mr. B.K Chakravarthy, IAS became the pole star of thevolunteers and illuminated the intentions of this program, igniting a spark within us. For the volunteers’ training ,the government of Assam leveraged the ECHO Indiaplatform with a focus to train the volunteers throughseveral rounds of video conferences through Zoomplatform. A script of dialogues were delivered to us which

we sincerely chanted while attending any calls throughthat app. They say ‘Patience is a virtue’, we lived thisphrase while attending every single call. One of the mostperplexing enigma faced by all the volunteers was todecode the words of the migrants while entering theirdetails. The Piramal foundation team supervised thevolunteers in the groundwork, including tele-counsellingfor those experiencing anxiety during lockdown. TheAssam Govt extended its heartfelt gratitude towards thevolunteers with a remuneration of 1000 rupees and adistinguished certificate.

Remember when the titanic was sinking but the bandcontinued to play? Well every frontline covid warriorforms that band. If they could wear the capes ofsuperheroes, providing telephonic assistance is the leastwe could contribute. As we continue to further ourunderstanding of the novel coronavirus, itsepidemiological characteristics and possible avenues fortreatment, lets reside in a cocoon amalgamated withpositivity and light!

calamities of recent times that include global warming, floods, droughts not to mention the current pandemic thatseems to have brought the entire world to a dreaded halt.

Do we have answers to Nature’s questions that threatenour very existence? Surely we can embark on an endeavorto seek the answers.

With this fast-paced world of emerging superpowers, human beings have manipulated and exploited nature likenever before. Gigantic structures infringes on Nature’sterritory, innumerable contraptions such as a variety ofautomobiles pollute the environment. However, variousinventors and planners have implemented ideas that canappropriately build, manufacture and assemble them inways that are not detrimental to Mother Nature. Ideas suchas Green Buildings have become widespread. Oftenpropositions of ideas that are not destructive to theenvironment have been put forth. However, their perfectimplementation and the number of people actuallyadopting such methods still remain questionable.

But can we go a step further? Can we come up withideas and proposals which not only do not affect natureadversely but also aids in restoring the damage that hasalready been done – For example a Green Car that not justuses biogas as fuel but also purifies the air! Or Can therebe a packaging material that is not only biodegradable butalso provides manure to the earth when it degrades!

The idea seems to be preposterous in a situation whereit is a challenge to even come up with initiatives which areat least nature friendly. Going beyond simply being naturefriendly could be a thing of the imagination now, but it isalso absolutely true that, “What is now proven was alsoonce in the realm of imagination”.

Millions of innovations and inventions take placearound the globe every day, going back to where we startedfrom, the world is like the sea with pearls in it, some comeout with pearls of knowledge and the rest come out emptyhanded.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to be studying inan institution where such ideas and thoughts areencouraged, are extensively discussed and are also a partof our classroom courses. If it can ignite a spark of curiosityeven in a fraction of us, it can lead to great enterprises.

As a small part of the civil engineering community thatis closely associated with building and nurturing theenvironment, we must put our best effort forward insustaining, conserving as well as cultivating creative ideasto not just protect nature but to strengthen it. We can onlydo so by surrendering to the intelligence of nature. For it isrightly said, “If we surrendered to earth’s intelligence, wecould rise up rooted, like Trees”! - Rainer Maria Rilke.

Why only Nature friendly?Rubaiyana TaskinB.Tech 3rd semester

“Pearls don’t lie on the seashore, they lie on the deepocean bed .If you want one, you must dive for it”

The most precious thing that we human beings havebeen privileged with is nature. The very surroundings thatwe are gifted with provide us with all the amenities thatwe require for comfortable living – the clean air we breathe, the crystal-clear water we drink and even the plants thatprovide us with the very essentials of life.

Memories of us frolicking in the lap of nature vividlyexist in our very soul right from our childhood. Each oneof us will recall at least one incident such as the feel of thesprinkling of water drops on the face as we looked on withawe at some roaring waterfall.

But recently nature has thrown up perplexing questionsthat we never anticipated. Alarming consequences of theexploitation of the environment have been raisingapprehensions around the globe. Researchers have beentrying to seek answers and explanations to the various

Rajan Choudhary, Professor, department of civilengineering, IIT Guwahati. He discussed Open gradedfriction courses (OGFC) which are a type of asphaltwearing course that mainly contain uniformly gradedcoarse aggregates with a small portion of fine aggregate,to allow quick drainage of surface water through itself.

The conference ended with an open discussionfollowed by the vote of thanks by Dr. Jayanta Pathak. Thisconference provided an excellent platform for ouracademicians, engineers and the students to getacquainted with the modern and efficient sustainableinfrastructure developments and all the registeredparticipants benefited from the deliberations by thediverse invited experts.

Having had success in the first two COSVARDconferences under relatively normal environments, theCOSVARD 2020 was required to be held in a year like noother. Ravaged by the global pandemic and at the time ofnot only global but national borders restrictions acrossmany countries, hosting an international conference wasnot an easy task. Yet, 21st Century’s technology coupledwith competence and enthusiasm of the participants fromacross the globe made it all possible.

COSVARD 2020 Webinar provided a global platformfor researchers, policy makers and industry professionalsto share relevant knowledge and examples from practiceassociated with new forms of rural development. With over40% of the world’s nearly 8 billion population still livingin rural and ever-increasing discrepancies between urbanand rural, the role of COSVARD for building necessarycapacities and mobilising required effort for reducing thegap of urban-rural divide is pivotal. With three consecutiveyears of COSVARD, a solid roadmap has been laid forbuilding the much needed capacity underpinned byrelevant knowledge and theories in a new form of ruraldevelopment widely known as “Smart Villages”. Figure 1shows the banner of COSVARD 2020 representing the keythemes of rural housing, rural infrastructure, ruraleconomy, sustainability and governance.

Snapshot of the banner of COSVARD 2020

Smart Villages is a relatively new concept where multipleinterrelated dimensions are integrated for developing ruralcommunities with a bottom up approach. In smart villagecreation, data-driven and context specific solutions are atthe center of intervention planning and management.Traditional top-down approaches where decisions oninterventions are based on the grand national and statelevel public schemes, proven to be ineffective in terms ofdelivering direct benefits to the community targeting theirneeds and requirements at the grass-roots levels.

Through the COSVARD conference, numerous new ideasare being shared and debated among the academia, practitioners and public officials across a range of differentissues associated with the community development. InCOSVARD 2020, there were a total of 16 research papersand three design posters presented across two full days. Inaddition, there were six keynote speeches and one speciallecture by some of the distinguished professionals acrosslarge areas of expertise. Figure 2 shows the inauguralprogram of COSVARD 2020.

Being a notable engineering college of nationalimportance, it is very important for the departments ofAssam Engineering College to ensure that their studentsget acquainted with as many technical skills as possible.Presently, students are being taught about report writingand other soft skills within the four boundaries of theclassroom. However, poster presentation is still notencompassed in their coursework. The departmentof civil engineering, Assam Engineering College organised a poster presentation competition for the final year

students of the department. Dr. Binu Sharma, Professor ofthe department coordinated the event with assistance fromDr. Jayshree Hazarika, Assistant Professor. The topic ofthe poster presentation was decided as the projects carriedout by the students during their 7th semester coursework. It was organised by procrastinating that postermaking will help in developing their presentation skillsand encourage team work, which will eventually improvetheir employability after graduation. It also gave anexposure to the upcoming batches to different emergingareas of civil engineering and encouraged them to work intheir niche of interest. The poster presentation was held

Development of an android applicationSix students of the department viz. Shamim Akhter, SabazAhmed Mazumder, Saptarshi Paul, Shrweta Dutta, HridayJyoti Sharma and Abhilash Hazarika have come up withan Android Application by the name of “Pavement PriorityScore Calculator” which helps to prioritize secondaryroad sections for maintenance and rehabilitation works. The application is developed using XML as the Mark-up Language and JAVA as the programming languagein Android Studio. It considers the four importantdomains of any pavement section viz. functionaldistress, roughness, social importance and structuralstrength. From the user inputs related to these fourdomains, the application can compute and display apriority score, on the basis of which the user can furtherselect the road sections for maintenance works. The appis also designed in such a way that it can work withoutany other equipment. The data such as characteristicdeflection, roughness etc. which otherwise have to becollected by very costly equipment are predicted quiteaccurately by the app using 3D non-linear regression. The application is available now in Google Play Store forthe benefit of the pavement engineer fraternity of India. This project is a continuation of the hard work put byKaustav Kangkan Mahanta, Bhargav Raj Kashyap,Bhagyendra Deka, Arishma Kashyap, Samar KrishnaDeka andParamananda Dekafrom the 2016-2020batch for which theyreceived AEC Class88 innovative projectof the year award anda sum of Rs. 10,000/-as Aparna KumarPadmapati Memorialscholarship. A tale of three friends

College life is the most memorable phase of one's life. But engineering colleges are where most of the funhappens, and that is exactly what happened in 2017. Threefriends namely Rupam Choudhury, Mousum Talukdarand David Gogoi of Civil Engineering Department, fromAssam Engineering College during their 7th sem project, they were asked to make projects involving environment-friendly materials in civil engineering. Mr. MousumTalukdar was the one who first had this idea of makingsomething sustainable. The 7th sem project got over but heheld on to this idea.

After graduating, they had the choice of trying for jobsor being entrepreneurs. They diligently chose the latter, trying to mould their ideas into concrete plans.

Conventional process of making bricks in kilns releasesharmful particulate matter (PM) which contributes to airpollution. Moreover, conventional bricks are made bydigging the earth or using soil which strips the environmentof the fertile topsoil which is essential for productiveagriculture. The young minds developed a patented PlasticEmbedded Lightweight Brick using fly ash from thermalpower plants, waste plastic, cement among others. About70% of the bricks comprises waste material and are madeusing electric machines instead of being fired in kilns, which eliminates the carbon emissions. These bricks are10% lighter and in weight six conventional bricks makeone Zerund brick which makes them super cost effective.Since they began their operations, they have catered toover 1000+ clients and have sold over 2.5 lakh bricks. Thesebricks have been used in at least 50+ mega projects of thegovernment in the entire North-East India. This is indeeda proud moment for the college, the department and thewhole student fraternity itself.

A chronicle

Every morning humanshave the habit of taking up thenewspaper and a cup of teato go with it. The print mediachanged lives like none other, all the information of theworld was at the fingertips ofeveryone. It became a habit, aritual. But with changingtimes people lost touch withthe print media hence havinga generation who aren’tsocially and politicallyaware. But as the wheels oftime kept running, humans again started readingnewspapers. Trying to soak up knowledge, still a problemarised. The problem of insufficient time. Alternatives weresearched and the best alternative was social media tryingto cater the needs of this genre. Venturing in this newpool of entrepreneurship, some students of the CivilEngineering Department of AEC created TNEC - THENORTH EASTERN CHRONICLES. At present they have7 managing partners from various other regions out ofwhich two are from AEC namely Somya Roy Choudhuryand Prasurjya Bhuyan. The idea came up when JIO wasgetting recognised and the youth started demanding moreauthentic and genuine sources of information. At a timewhen there were only a few but one, TNEC sprang intoexistence after a lot of difficulties and hardships since allof the founders and managing partners were/arestudents. After a couple of years TNEC got recognisedand as of now they have partnered with 100+ national &international brands, colleges, products, social reforminitiatives, etc. They are incubated in Assam Startup Nestand backed by IIM Calcutta Innovation Park and in a fewmonths time they will turn TNEC into a private limitedcompany. The startup has soared high but there was apoint too when everything was lost when their page onInstagram got hacked and deleted. They went through alot of hardships in those difficult times as starting fromscratch was a difficult task but with God’s grace andhelp from the Instagram Support Team they got their pageback and now they are again on the road of going higherand higher.

Task: Recording of online lecturesThe Covid-19 pandemic changed the means of educationand turned it into an online programme. This commutecaused major problems for those who belonged to ruralareas having poor network connections and also for thosewho couldn’t afford enough internet for scheduled classes. As a solution, Dr. Palash Jyoti Hazarika, HoD along withsome other faculty members instituted the plan to recordthe online class sessions and have it uploaded on Youtube(in the unlisted mode). For this purpose, 2-3 students fromeach semester/section were assigned with the task ofregular recording and uploading. The department alsofinanced the assigned students for the internet data packsrequired for this cause. As the videos uploaded wereunlisted ones, their links were maintained in a Googlespread sheet, available for everyone’s access. Every videodescription included the date of class, name of the professorand also the topics covered.

This arrangement was advantageous, not just for thosehaving internet issues, but also for those who needed torefer back to the video lectures anytime later.
