Activities

The Medieval Banner

Make medieval banners. The ones below were made of felt and yarn. They hang on coat hangers. If you want to have an authentic design go to our link

page and check out the site called Shields, Knights, and Heraldry http://www.yourchildlearns.com/heraldry.htm.

Berry Ink and a Scroll

Make a book or scroll.

The scroll may be made to look old by staining the paper with coffee or tea.

Make blueberry ink. This is made by mashing blueberries. Take the juice and add a small amount of vinegar and salt to the juice.

Use a quill to have students write in their scroll.

16 | P a g e

A Shield and Sword

Make your own shield and sword.

Swords can be made

from an empty

wrapping paper roll. Flatten the roll. Cut

one end into a point. Wrap the roll with

silver duct tape. Add a piece of poster board

to make the handle. Wrap the bottom of the

sword with black electrician's tape.

17 | P a g e

Mock Stained Glass

Make a mock stained glass.

Cut out a design on a piece of black construction paper. Take a clear piece of

stiff plastic and glue this to the black construction paper. On the back side of the clear plastic, glue small pieces of colored tissue paper to color in your

design.

Pomander Balls

Make a pomander ball - Small pomander balls in were placed in handkerchiefs so the ladies

could sniff their sweet smell instead of bad street odors.

Directions for making a pomander ball: Use a toothpick to prick a hole in the skin of a piece of

fruit such as an apple or orange. Then place a clove in the hole. Repeat until the entire fruit is

covered with cloves. Next stick the tips of a wire hairpin into the fruit at the stem. Then roll the

fruit in a dish of cinnamon. Place the fruit in a piece of cheesecloth. Twist the cheesecloth

together around the hairpin. Use a piece of yarn to tie the cheesecloth onto the hairpin. Next tie

a ribbon bow around the yarn. Allow the fruit to dry in a cool, dark place for two to three weeks

until the fruit hardens. Place the dried pomander ball in a closet or drawer.

18 | P a g e

The Cake Castle

Make a castle cake.

Start by making two cake mixes. Pour the batter into 4 loaf pans and into 4

ice cream cones. Bake as directed by the mix. Arrange the four cakes into a square with the ice cream cones on the corners. Spread white icing over the

cakes and ice cream cones. Decorate using fruit gummies, M & M's, and marshmallows. Make a drawbridge with cookies.

19 | P a g e

Helmets for the Knights and Hats for the Ladies

Can you believe this helmet was made from an ordinary milk jug? See the directions below.

Follow them to make your own helmet.

Make helmets or cone shaped hats.

A helmet may be made from a

gallon milk jug. Cut out the side opposite the handle and the

bottom of the jug. The opening you cut needs to be large

enough to put your face through. From the left over

pieces of plastic cut a chin

strap. Staple the chin strap onto the helmet. Cover the helmet

with aluminum foil. Add a paper plume at the top of the helmet.

20 | P a g e

Girls may wish to make a cone hat instead. Use a large

piece of poster board. Cut it into a half circle shape. Roll the poster board into a cone shape and staple the back

seam securely. Add a long scarf to the point. This may be taped to the inside before rolling. Staple two ribbons on

the sides so that the hat may be tied under the chin when wearing.
