“I’m not sure what I’ll be doing. What my

day will look like is completely unknown to

me. I don’t have any friends going. I’ll be

sleeping away from my home. I probably

won’t like the food either.”

These could be sentiments shared by our

children and teens before they go to

overnight camp, but alas they are actually

mine. I’m going for the first time to Camp

Newman, the Union for Reform Judaism, in

Northern California for two weeks in July.

Many rabbis and Jewish professionals do

this. It’s a way of serving the greater Jewish

community, supporting our own temple

youth, and participating and leading creative

Jewish programming. I’ve been asked for

years to do this and somehow found the right

excuse not to. Not this year though. I know

the timing is right and it’s the right thing to

do. However, it’s all new to me.

As an adult, I can be fearful of the

unknown just as our kids are. Even as I

confess that I’m a bit nervous about sleeping

away from home without people I like and

love, I am very curious to see the camp and

how it works. Our synagogue has been

promoting Camp Newman because it is a

product of our movement and reflects our

values. Through the Lynn Front Memorial

URJ Campership Fund of our Foundation, we

have been providing grants for our youth

with priority to those entering 7-9th grade

with financial need and absolute merit to

attend Camp Newman. Through the vision

of Seth Front, son of the late Rabbi Henri and

Regina Front, we have been sending record

numbers of youth to Camp Newman. The

reports from our youth have been amazing. I

have heard from everyone how much fun

their camp experience was, all the friends

they made, and they genuinely have an

excitement for Judaism upon their return.

My experience, as an adult and rabbi, I

expect to be different from our youth. I am

looking forward to seeing the camp, helping

with programming and worship, and keeping

an eye out for our Temple youth. I may not

like the food but I do anticipate working with

dedicated staff and clergy during my time

away. I’ll be sure give you a report on

activities at camp. In the meantime, off I go.

I’m scared to go to overnight camp

SISTERHOOD MATTERS!

By Ruth Kramer, Sisterhood President

On Sunday, June 14. our Annual Donor Luncheon,

chaired by Mickey Lewin and Sue LeBoff was the

Sisterhood highlight event in June. This delightful

party provided a delicious luncheon and an

opportunity to celebrate our achievements.

Rabbi Nancy Myers conducted a meaningful

installation of Board members. We revisited the

past year with a 3 page scroll listing the many

events and achievements of the past year.

Edie Mino received the “Woman of Merit” award,

selected by a group of past honorees and named for

outstanding service to our organization. There

were lots of door prizes and fun.

We begin our new Sisterhood year this month with

an active and energetic Board. Cathy Katz joins us

as Membership chair along with Elaine Netzer. We

welcome them and look forward to their

participation in our dynamic organization.

The next planned event for Sisterhood is the bus

trip to Pechanga Casino on Tuesday, July 28th.

Be sure to get your reservations in to Edie Schwartz

as these trips sell out quickly; or there is a

registration listed in the Shavua Tov and the

Megillah. The cost is $20 per person with your

check made out to the Sisterhood or you can pay in

cash if you prefer and $10 is refunded at the casino

for each attendee’s use. It is a fun and effortless

day with a comfortable bus ride to and from the

area, 8:30 a.m. to about 5:00

p.m.

Our Membership, Program and Fund-raising

committees are already hard at work to prepare an

interesting program for the year. The Membership

Brunch event will be held at the temple in the

Social Hall on Sunday morning, October 11th. A

membership form for Sisterhood is included in the

Temple membership form; just click on

“Sisterhood”. Please send a separate check made

out to Sisterhood. to get an early start on the

Sisterhood year. You are sure to have great food

and entertainment.

Mark your calendars for a Sisterhood fund-raiser

brunch on Sunday morning, November 1 starring

Larry Maurer of “Timeless Melodies”, an

entertaining music and video show featuring

familiar Jewish music, events and history. Our

own Cantor Linder is one of the featured

performers. This is an event you won’t want to

miss! More information to

follow!

Have a great summer and remember that Sisterhood

Matters!

Membership Report - July 2015

Kelly Halbreich, VP Membership

I am so pleased to have an

opportunity to serve our

Synagogue by welcoming new

members! Our family received

such a warm welcome when we

joined two years ago it is my

pleasure to continue that

wonderful work. We have so

much to plan and organize over

the next year, from a Havdalah

Beach Party in August to our

New Member Reception and

ensuring anyone who would like

to is a member of a Chavurah. If

you would like to volunteer

welcoming new members to our

wonderful Synagogue our

committee is looking for you.

When we first joined the

Synagogue, I wasn’t sure about

joining a Chavurah as it sounded

like just one more thing to do

during my already busy day,

week and month. I can tell you

my experience at TBD has been

enhanced by the friendships we

are building and fun we have

had with our Chavurah. We

spend most of our time talking,

sharing recipes and of course

eating wonderful food. I have

heard about other Chavurah’s

that have more structured events

like evenings out at a stage show

or comedy club. There is

something for everyone. If you

are interested in joining a

Chavurah or joining the

Membership Committee, feel

free to contact me directly for

further discussion.

This month I'll cover three events, two in Israel and one in Egypt. The first is one you may be aware of. The new Israeli government is a loose coalition, or at least that is how it appears. The new Minister of Religious Affairs, David Azoulay, a Knesset member of the Shas Party, the Ashkenazi religious party, met with Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked to discuss Women of the Wall, and Azoulay declared, “Reform Jews are a disaster for the people of Israel.” It is a statement clearly at odds with supportive statements about Reform Judaism and Diaspora Jewry that Prime Minster Netanyahu has made to Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of our Union for Reform Judaism, and that he made in a video speech to the last Convention of the URJ. ARZA's immediate reply to Prime Minister Netanyahu said in part, "The fact that this statement was made by the Minister of Religious Affairs – the person in charge of the provision of religious services to all Jewish Israeli citizens – makes it all the more severe, and brings into question whether he is fit to serve this position in a way that gives proper respect to the basic democratic values of the State of Israel, the national homeland for Jewish people of all movements, communities, and streams. In addition, this statement seriously damages the solidarity that many Jewish communities around the world feel with the State of Israel, which is especially hurtful during a time when this crucial sense of connection is often already lacking. In light of the severity of this statement and knowing that you are personally committed to nurturing Israel’s relationship with Diaspora Jewry, I ask that you make a public condemnation of MK Azoulay’s statement and demonstrate your government’s commitment to productive, empowering, and respectful dialogue with all circles of the Jewish world." The second event shows how convoluted the relationships between governments, religious minorities and Arab rebels has gotten. It revolves around the Druze, a Middle Eastern monotheistic religion whose followers live primarily in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel and it will mean something to those who went on our congregational trip to Israel. One of the Druze tenets is loyalty to the government of the country in which they live, but their beliefs are secret and known in full to only a leadership elite. Druze do serve in the Israel Defense Force. During our congregation's trip to Israel we stopped in a Druze town in the Golan where we had lunch and were impressed by their community and school children. Recently the

Syrian civil war has caused problems for them because Israel is providing medical treatment to Syrian rebels injured near the Israel border. The Druze in Syria are loyal to the Syrian government, putting them at odds with Israel that favors non-jihadist rebel groups. Recently an Israeli convoy of wounded rebels being taken for treatment in Israel caused a riot by Israeli Druze who attacked some of rebels. Israel has stated that its policy is to treat only rebels who have not persecuted Syrian Druze in the rebel controlled areas and Israeli Druze leaders denounced the rioters. Israel's Defense Minister, Moshe Ya’alon clarified that Israel would not abandon the Druze in Syria. “The rebels that come close to the border fence will get humanitarian aid and the condition is that they don’t harm the Syrian Druze." He emphasized that the riot that led to the attack against the wounded Syrian rebels and the statements by leaders of the riots caused a lot of damage in his opinion. However, Ya’alon praised the conduct of the head of the Israel Druze community, Sheikh Mofaq Tarif and the Druze mayors. The third item is less convoluted, but more surprising. In Egypt they run TV serials during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month that began last week and requires spiritual reflection and fasting during daylight hours. This year it has been reported that one series in Egypt is a lot like the typical fare: a love story with a villain trying to steal the leading lady's man. There's prostitution, politics and intrigue. But this one has a twist. The heroine is a likeable Jewish woman. It has been controversial since the program was conceived. The director, Mohamed el-Adl has said, "They were telling us why would you make a series about Jews, it's forbidden, it's not nice to show them, it's not nice to talk about them..." The series shows a pre-Nasser Egypt that was much more cosmopolitan and that included Jews as loyal Egyptians. This would not be so surprising had not Egyptian TV run in recent years a thirteen-hour anti-Semitic series about how Jews are scheming to take over the world by controlling the economy. Even Israelis have trouble understanding their government, their minorities and the their neighbors in a part of the world where it is never safe to assume that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Club 55 Presents Rabbi Michael Mayersohn “The New Reality of Christian-Jewish Relations”

Rabbi Mayersohn will speak about Jewish-Christian relations based in a large part on his experiences over the last 12 years teaching in churches in Orange County, San Diego, and Arizona. He will pose the idea that we are living in a new era of interfaith relationships, a break from the history of the past.

Rabbi Michael Mayersohn served as rabbi of TBD for 13 years. He teaches classes at churches throughout

Southern California and Arizona. In 2014 he served as the keynote speaker for the annual clergy conference of the Nottingham diocese in England.

You don’t have to be a Club 55 member or a Temple Beth David member to attend!

For further information or if you know someone that can be a part of this exciting program, please call me or email me at

To Our Temple Beth David Family:

As most of you are aware, our Temple depends on donations to deliver the high quality of

services to all of you. We understand that many of you are still struggling with the recent

economic downturn. However, we have come up with a way that will allow you to donate to

the Temple without spending a penny of your own money, plus you will actually save money

on many purchases that you normally make!

We would like to introduce you to Goodshop and Goodsearch. Goodshop works with more

than 5,000 stores that will provide all of you with discounts on what you normally buy and then

will donate up to 20% of the purchase price to the Temple. You will simply click on a link on

the Temple Home Page, start saving money for your family and help the Temple out as

well! We have included an easy step-by-step signup guide with this letter. Here are some

examples of companies that participate in the program:

Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sears, Sak’s, Apple, Old Navy, the Gap, Amazon,

Office Depot, Petco, Staples, Dell, The Limited, Holiday Inn, Groupon, Levi’s, Lands End,

Best Buy, 1-800 Flowers, 24 Hour Fitness, and Victoria’s Secret.

These are companies that we all normally shop at, and by simply clicking on the link on the

Temple website, you will be saving money for your family and actually raising money for the

Temple. In addition, you can also save money by dining out at participating restaurants and, at

the same time, raising donations for the Temple as well. It’s simple, free and easy to use, and

the average family using the site over a year will actually raise more than $350 annually for the

Temple. Multiply that by our 300 families and we will raise more than $100,000 per year for

the Temple! This program really works. Goodshop has raised more than $11 million for

charitable organizations with this program.

Likewise, we are also rolling out Goodsearch. By doing your internet searches through

Goodsearch.com, which links with Yahoo, the Temple will receive a penny for every internet

search. If you can imagine how many internet searches you do, and your families do, this will

also add up to real money for the Temple.

We encourage all of you to participate and to help strengthen our Temple for all of us and for

the generations to come.

With best regards,

Neil Kornswiet Aaron Kern Nancy Meyers
