Preface

Stairway is an English course book for students in Elementary School in Indonesia. This book consists of six series designed for students of year one to year six. The objectives of the book are to introduce English to the students and to familiarize them to use the language step by step just like a stairway during their critical period of learning a language. The book is writ-ten based on the Decrees of the Minister of National Education Number 22 Year 2006 about Standard of Contents and Number 23 Year 2006 about Standard of Graduate Competence. It also integrates many values of nation characteristics into the material so that the teachers are able not only to deliver new knowledge but also to implant those into the students.

Stairway 5 introduces and enriches the students of year one with vocabularies for begin-ner and very simple expressions related to the language functions for introducing oneself and others, mentioning toys, identifying vegetables, etc. Each unit is designed to have the following sub units: come on, passwords, exercise, grab the stars, let us try, useful ex-pressions, fun time. The unit also has supportive materials for the theme being discussed such as more to know, around the world, creative hands, glossary, chapter’s review and developing HOTS. It has QR Code as well to enrich and support the materials. To assess the learning progress, is provided in the last part of each unit for the students to com-plete personally. liberty to organize and to develop the teaching and the learning process according to the needs of the class. Moreover, cutting pictures are displayed in the last pages of the book to be exploited as supplement materials for the learning process. The description of the way each unit works is displayed in the Concept Map.

Although the book was prepared and written through a detailed process, it is believed that mistakes are still found. On that account, any suggestion and criticism is expected for the improvement.
