the many tourist attractions nearby.

It is named after thelegendary Kadazan warrior, Monsopiad, and was set up by

his descendants.

Have Fun and Enjoy!

The Berjaya Times Square Theme Park is located on the 5th

and 7th floors of the mall. Built by the fictitious mad scientist

Professor Cosmo and his clumsy robot assistant Ooort, this

133,000sqft theme park is guaranteed to transport you to

another galaxy far, far away. There are six adult thrill rides

specially designed for the park. They are the heart-stopping

roller coaster, the 30-metre-high Spinning Orbit, Space Attack,

Ooort’s Express, Dizzy Izzy and the DNA Mixer.

Berjaya Times Square Theme Park

Come and spend an entire weekend at Kuala Lumpur Berjaya Times Square. Located right in the

heart of the city centre, there is something here for everyone in this integrated retail, entertainment

and leisure complex which also boasts the country’s biggest indoor theme park.

A World of its Own

6

The 800-metre-long roller coaster nicknamed the Supersonic

Odyssey is sure to give you the ride of your life! What makes

it even more interesting is the viewing deck on the bridge

connecting the 8th floor, where you board the ride, to the 9th

floor overlooking the theme park. The roller coaster then

loops around the bridge thus giving parents and friends a

chance to see or photograph their kids riding the world’s

longest indoor roller coaster which plunges from the 13th

floor to the 5th level before coming to a halt on the 7th floor.

What a thrill!

Another ride bound to leave you in a daze is the DNA Mixer.

This crazy invention by our mad scientist is sure to loop the

minds of 21 passengers at one go. Try getting off and you’ll be

sure to lose all sense of direction!

A milder yet equally exciting place for the kids to be is the

Fantasy Garden. Created by Professor Cosmo and decorated

with bright beautiful colours and small benches for the kids to

rest when they are worn out from all that running around,

there are 8 rides which children of all ages can enjoy. The

Buddy Go Round carousel will definitely excite the youngsters

whereas the rocking boat ride, Molly-Cool’s Swing is sure to

sway their minds.

Families can also enjoy a smooth drive with their kids through

a natural wonderland at the garden with the Botanic Drive

ride. To top things off, Bumper Cars are also found in the

garden to accommodate both children (Honey Bump) and

adults (Robo Crash). Besides the rides, the children will be

entertained by Professor Cosmo himself and together with his

friends the garden will be filled with joy and laughter.

The amusement does not stop there as the Kidz Castle is

situated nearby for entertainment on stage and the children’s

playground Kidz @ PlayGround is another place of restless

fun.

For the bold and the brave, there’s the heart-thumping

challenge of the Thunderbolt to conquer. This is one of the

longest uphill water coasters in Asia. Ride the Thunderbolt,

and have a terrific experience sliding up and down a winding

tube that is elevated. From the Thunderbolt, keep the charge

up at the Supertube, where you can glide through the wacky

twists and turns of the open and closed tube at racing speed

that will send you screaming.

Go for more screaming fun and excitement at the Splash-Out

activity pool, where you need to hang on to a rope and jump

from one floatable to another. Let’s see who falls into the

water first! Next, go for the Shock Wave, where you can sit

on the beach and wait for the waves to rush up and splash

over you. Watch out, the waves can go as high as 1.4 metres!

Next, create some action on the Action River or just glide

along to re-charge your batteries.

Come to the Ultimate Water Factory and turn the wheels

and push buttons. Watch out! Water shoots out in all

directions from showers and jets. Time to get all bubbly in the

Bubble Pool, where the water comes out in bubbles, or head

for some swimming at the deeper Ripple Bay.

For families that want to play together, the Surf Shack is

Snowalk The first in South East Asia, this 50,000sqft frozen

environment features 100 tons of ice sculptures shaped by a

team comprising 30 of the best sculptors from Harbin, China.

Climate-controlled at below 5 degrees Celsius, with 100mm

of snow underfoot, Snowalk provides an unforgettable Arctic

experience especially for visitors from the warmer climes. It

also features a play zone for fun activities such as snowman-

making, ice-sliding and tobogganing. Costing RM10 million, this

edutainment centre accommodates up to 800 visitors.

WaterWorld Sprawled over a 10-acre site, WaterWorld at i-City opened its

doors to welcome visitors in November 2012. Featuring

water rides ranging from tame to wild in their propensity to

provide thrills, WaterWorld at i-City offers hours of aquatic

fun for the whole family. The rides include the Giant Jacuzzi,

Spiral and Rainbow slides, a Children’s

Adventure Pool, River Adventure through LED-lit grottoes

and a Wave pool with a giant LED screen.

The most popular, however, is the Tornado Ride. The first in

the ASEAN region, it is the ultimate adrenalin rush. From the

launch tower, a steep 160ft water tunnel sends four tube-raft

riders hurtling towards a 7-storey high funnel tilted at a 45-

degree angle. The rafts oscillate four to six times up both

sides of the funnel producing a sensation of weightlessness.

When gravity reasserts itself, the rafts then flow through the

funnel bottleneck before splashing down

into the 1350sqft landing pool.

FunWorld Designed for the family, there is

much fun to be had at this

themed attraction. There are

arcade games and rides for tots

and teens, a 5D theatre that

As its name suggests, this one-of-a-kind attraction presents a ‘lightscape‘ illuminated with over a millionLED lights. It features outdoor theme park rides set in a ‘forest’ of maples and pines of jewel-tonedluminosity. Among the rides are the Superswing, a Spacewalk and the traditional favourite– a double-decker carousel. City of Digital Lights at i-City is a Malaysian Night Tourism highlight.

expands the cinematic experience, a Trick Art Museum, A

House of Horror and an interactive All-Star wax museum.

The Trick Art Museum Based on the ancient art of Trompe L’oeil, the exhibits tease

the mind with optical illusions created by the clever

rendering of shadows and subjects that extend beyond the

picture frame. Five art themes – Masterpieces, Egyptian,

Marine Life, Animal Kingdom and Modern Classics – are

featured, housed within 8,000sqft of display area on two

floors. Here, visitors are encouraged to have fun posing for

pictures with the exhibits.

House of Horror Ghosts, ghouls, spectres and other denizens of the dark

inhabit this 15,000sqft haunted house. Combining

mechatronics (machine and electronics), Night Art and live

performance, nightmares are brought to life to provide spine-

chilling entertainment for those brave enough to venture

within. There are spooky surprises at every turn with the

eerie atmosphere heightened by special sound and visual

effects.

Red Carpet Opened in August 2013, this is yet another ‘first’ to be

introduced by i-City. An interactive waxwork museum, the

Red Carpet showcases an All-Star cast bringing together

glamour and glitz, power and politics, the strange and

wonderful in 30,000sqft of Oscar Awards setting. The RM 25

million Red Carpet is a Visit Malaysia Year 2014 (VMY)

highlight.

All 100 exhibits are drawn from world icons and

personalities along six themes, namely World Icons,

Celebrities, Sports Stars, World Book of Records, All-Star

Cafe and Interactive – some of which are sound and motion

automated.

Here, too, visitors are welcome to step up close, to examine

and touch the wax figures. You can witness and marvel at the

uncanny resemblance in skin tones and texture of your idols

while the interactive element allows visitors to party with

them.

The Water Park has two areas to bring you double the fun.

Waters of Africa is the ultimate land of spills and thrills, with

attractions including the Vuvuzela and the Waterplexx 5D,

while Surf Beach is the World’s Largest Man-Made

Surf Beach.

Fog, smoke effects, water jets, fountains and

mist – all packed into the ultimate, multi-

sensory journey unlike any the world has

ever seen. The Waterplexx 5D is the first of

its kind in the world, a water-based attraction

which engages the rider’s sense of sight, sound

and touch. Whether it is a pirate’s adventure or an

underwater wonderland, visitors can expect to feel

everything they see, from the gust of wind to a powerful gale.

The Vuvuzela, Sunway Lagoon’s latest attraction and the

world’s largest water ride, is a sight to behold, as it occupies

3,360m (three times of the size of an Olympic standard

swimming pool) of the water park. From a launch tower

an incredible eleven storeys (30m) high, the Vuvuzela

plunges you through a ride that spans 152m,

designed to resemble riding rapids on a turbulent

river, before mercilessly plummeting you into the

world’s largest water funnel, 22m in diameter

which also sits 4m above the ground.

The Vuvuzela entered the Malaysia Book of Records

in 2013 as the Biggest Water Ride in Malaysia. Aside

from the Vuvuzela, the theme park’s very own Waterplexx 5D

has also made it into the Malaysia Book of Records in 2012 as

the first 5D Waterplexx in Malaysia.

Sunway Lagoon

Step inside and you’ll discover a magical kingdom of pure fun and excitement. Experience the

wonders of over 80 rides and attractions spread across its 5 parks – Water Park, Amusement Park,

Extreme Park, Wildlife Park and Scream Park. This multiple-award-winning attraction is the winner of

‘Asia’s Best Attraction’ by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA)

from 2007–2010, ‘Asia’s Best Waterpark 2011’ by IAAPA and ‘Best Man-Made Tourist Attraction

2005/2006’ by Tourism Malaysia.

Five Different Parks inOne Amazing Destination

15

Stretching over 13,000 square meters, the Surf Beach is

capable of churning out perfectly shaped waves up to the

maximum height of 8ft. The ability to condition the waves

according to the needs of the surfers in terms of height, time

and wave patterns make Surf Beach at Sunway Lagoon a

surfer’s paradise for both professional and aspiring surfers.

Complementing the scenery is the sight and sound of Asia’s

Biggest Man-Made Erupting Volcano. One of the many hit

attractions to hit the shores of the Surf Beach is the

FlowRider, Malaysia’s First Surf Simulator.

The Amusement Park is made up of the following two themes

to wow visitors from all walks of life. Wild Wild West brings

visitors back to an old Western cowboy town, while World of

Adventure is where adventure comes alive. Among the

highlights here are the Pedestrian Suspension Bridge, which is

one of Malaysia’s Longest Suspension bridges at 428m long,

and Pirate’s Revenge, Malaysia’s first and only 360-degree

rotating pirate ship that will swivel you to 24 metres above

ground level.

Wildlife Park @ Sunway Lagoon, Malaysia’s First Interactive

Zoo, features exotic, small and friendly animals from a range of

birds, reptiles and mammals. The zoo’s concept encourages

guests to not only see and learn about the animals but to get

up close and personal by touching them. This first and only

fully interactive animal-themed attraction in Malaysia houses

more than 150 species of exotic and tame animals.

Extreme enthusiasts need not look further for adrenaline

pumping activities. ALL the power packed action can be found

at ONE place – Extreme Park at Sunway Lagoon. So, prepare

to challenge yourself for the highest, the longest and the

fastest thrills and excitement. Among the highlights include

Asia’s Longest Flying Fox Trail at 206m and G-Force X – Asia’s

Highest and Fastest Slingshot Ride that goes from 0-120km in

2 seconds and up to 65m in height.

Lynton V. Harris’ Scream Park provides an intense, exhilarating

and live interactive ‘scare’ experience that takes the senses to

new heights of perception by using state-of-the-art audio and

visual technology as well as live actors. Spread over two

floors, Lynton V. Harris’ Scream Park takes the walkthrough

scare attraction and laser format to ground-breaking

proportions with Hollywood-style sets and a team of highly

specialised and trained performers.

When the sun is up and the swimming pool is not enough fun, it’s a great idea to make tracks for theWet World Shah Alam. Facing the scenic Shah Alam Lake, the Wet World Shah Alam is convenientlylocated in the Klang Valley, which helps to make it one of the most popular recreational spots in Selangor.

The bright colours of the waterpark – red, blue, pink and

yellow – scream fun and excitement. The most talked-about

ride is the exhilarating Monsoon Buster, one of the longest

uphill water coaster rides in Asia! You’ll find yourself

propelled forward on your floatable for some 200 metres by

water jets. Pure joy! Try it once, and you will be back for

more. Young children accompanied by an adult can also ride

the Monsoon Buster.

For team games, more than 10 people can slide down the

open Giant Slide. It’s that wide! More speedy challenges await

at the Tunnel Water Coaster, a closed ride, and the Big Splash,

a half closed and half open slide. Waiting for you at Neptune’s

Challenge are 10 floatables and you have to

walk across the water on these floats.

Lose your balance and you’ll get a

dunking, but that’s the fun of a water

game. Getting very wet!

Wet World Pedas Hot Springs

Splish, Splash in Spring WaterThe little town of Pedas in Negeri Sembilan has long been famous for its hot springs. For more than 60years, people have been going there to enjoy the hot spring water, which contains minerals, and isbelieved to have healing and therapeutic qualities. Now, there is even more reason to visit Pedas asthere is also the Wet World Pedas Hot Springs Waterpark for the whole family to enjoy.

19

Among the attractions at the Wet World Pedas Hot Springs

Waterpark are the two open-air common pools filled with

hot water from the spring. The spring water in the pools is at

a temperature of 35 to 46 degrees Centigrade, and once you

get used to the hot water, you’ll find it very relaxing. For

those who prefer privacy, private bathtubs are available. There

is also a reflexology footbath, where you walk on a

reflexology pebble trail in the water.

The cooled spring water is circulated throughout the

waterpark, which is set in scenic hilly surroundings and offers

hours of fun for families. If you don’t know which water ride

to try first, why not begin with the Lazy River that winds

around the theme park? Just lie back in your colourful

floatable, relax as you float around the park, and figure out

which ride attracts you. The small kids obviously love to be

on the Lazy River, imagining themselves in a boat, as their

parents push them along.

Kembar, the twin slides, offers a thrilling ride down an open

slide before splashing into the pool. The wave pool is another

fun place, where you can feel the force of the churning waves.

Or simply play around in the wading pool with your friends,

or conduct your own water team games.

You can also camp at the camping site next to the waterpark.

For additional fun, the waterpark can also arrange dry and

wet obstacle races for groups. Prior arrangement is required

for camping and additional activities (call Marketing

the kiddy slides. Once they’ve discovered

the fun of playing in the water, they will

not want to get out.

After all the excitement of the

water rides, it’s time to take it easy

and relax in the swirling waters of

the Jacuzzi. For those with lots of

leg energy, they may want to try the

Today, the 6th and 7th generation descendants of Monsopiadstill live on their ancestral land by the scenic Moyog River. And in memory of the great Monsopiad, they have built theMonsopiad Cultural Village, a fascinating authentic showcase ofthe rich and ancient culture of the Kadazans that goes back along time in history.

The Kadazans are part of the Kadazandusun community, thebiggest ethnic group in Sabah. The Monsopiad Cultural Villagehas been built with traditional materials used by theKadazandusun people for centuries, such as jungle logs, palmleaves and bamboo. After a warm greeting by your Kadazanhost at the entrance to Monsopiad Cultural Village and awelcome drink of ‘tapai’ (rice-wine), you can see the variousdaily activities in a Kadazan village. Here, everyone wears thetraditional black Kadazan attire.

A big attraction is the replica of Monsopiad’s house, sitting onthe original site, and raised off the ground. You climb up a logwith steps cut into it to reach the bamboo landing beforeentering the spacious house.

The Kadazans cultivate rice, and it is impressive to see therhythmic pounding of rice in a wooden mortar by two younggirls, as the long, carved wooden stick is heavy! You can have ago at pounding rice, if you like. The rice is then stored in a big‘tangkob’ or rice bin. Kadazan villagers also brew rice wineand make sago from the sago palm. The men make bamboofish traps, machetes, gongs and blowpipes. The women weave

cloth and mats, do embroidery and beadwork, and make‘sirung’ (the conical hat) and ‘tadang’ (the carrier basket). TheKadazans are also famous for their dances, and you can join inthe dancing during the performance.

In the House of Skulls can be seen the skulls of the 42enemies slain by Monsopiad. Also displayed are items used bythe Bobohizans, the high priestesses, who occupy animportant place in the Kadazan community. The Bobohizanscontinue to look after the skulls according to old customs andtraditions.

So vivid are the stories told by the Kadazan guide that onecan feel the presence of Monsopiad. Finally, as a fitting tributeto a great Kadazan warrior, you can follow the guide and trekup the hill to view the grave of the mighty Monsopiad.

Other attractions are the Kadazan wedding ceremony stagedevery Saturday in December, and the 40-minute Moyog Rivercruise in a ‘lipa lipa’ boat to Sodomon Jetty, during which youcan see rice fields, birds and the mystical Mount Kinabalu inthe distance.

Exotic Sarawak is famous for her many ethnic groups such asIban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Melanau, Penan, Malay and Chinese, who traditionally live in different parts of this huge state. Tovisit their traditional settlements would take many days.Fortunately, at the Sarawak Cultural Village situated at the footof the legendary Mount Santubong, the interesting cultures ofall these people can be experienced in one place.

The first stop is the Bidayuh Longhouse. In the Barok – thehead-house of the Bidayuhs – traditional gongs, war drumsand bamboo musical instruments are displayed. In one of thelonghouse dwellings, sitting by the window is a master carverexpertly carving an intricate design on a length of bamboo –free hand! Outside, two Bidayuh ladies in traditional blackoutfits are busy pounding and winnowing rice, while anotherdemonstrates the art of weaving fine bamboo strips intobeautiful baskets. You can try your hand at these activities. Forsome adventure, don’t forget to walk across the narrowbamboo bridge, just wide enough for one person. Feel thebridge bend and sway under your weight, and imagine rushingwater below.

Built above ground, the Iban Longhouse has a notched logserving as a staircase to the house. Several individual familyrooms front the common walkway in an Iban Longhouse. Ineach unit, enemy skulls in a net hang from the rafters, as theIbans were fierce head-hunters in the olden days. An Iban ladycan be seen weaving the traditional 'pua' on a back-strap loomwhile others make the intricate beaded collar and the tasty'kuih jala'.

The Penan Hut is very small and simple, as Penans arenomadic people who live in the dense virgin forests of CentralBorneo. They use the blowpipe for hunting, and a Penanwarrior would be happy to show you how to make ablowpipe, all by hand, and shoot with it. The Penans are alsovery skilful at making decorations from soft wood.

The Kayan, the Kenyah, the Kelabit, the Lun Bawang and theother minor tribes of Sarawak are known as the Orang Ulu.On the verandah of the imposing Orang Ulu Longhouse, theOrang Ulu musician plays a beautiful melody on the 'sape', astringed musical instrument. The ladies are famous for theirintricate beadwork, which is demonstrated in the longhouse.

44

The Melanau people traditionally lived near the sea and as ameans to protect themselves from the pirates, their housesare built 40 feet above the ground! At the Melanau Tall House, you need to climb up a long ladder to enter the woodenhouse. Outside the house is a Melanau carved totem pole, traditionally used to bury the village headmen. In a smallhouse, a Melanau lady is demonstrating the art of making sagopearls and crispy sago biscuits, from grating the sago palmtrunk to roasting the finished product. You can also try yourhand at grating the sago palm trunk.

The traditional Malay house is a wooden house built on stilts. The windows are cut down to floor level for maximumventilation, allowing cool breeze into the house. High artisticskills can be witnessed in the beautifully-decorated stairs andwindow railings, fascia boards under the eaves and theventilation grills above or beside doorways. You can join in themany traditional Malay games being demonstrated here, including 'gasing' and 'congkak'.

The Chinese farmhouse is a simple wooden house built onthe ground with trodden earth for a floor, whitewashed plankwalls and a thatched 'attap' roof. The interior consists of anopen kitchen, dining and living sections, and a storage area forvaluables such as bicycles or agricultural machinery as well assectioned-off bedrooms. The household shrine is a focal pointin the living area, while the doorpost is often pasted withpieces of red paper bearing auspicious words to bring luck toor divine protection for the family. Outside the house is apepper garden, one of Sarawak's signature crops.

After exploring the houses in Sarawak Cultural Village, sit backand enjoy dance performances of the tribes in the air-conditioned theatre. Among them is the spectacular IbanNgajat Lesong, where an Iban warrior demonstrates theextraordinary strength of his teeth by dancing with a 20kgmortar clamped in this mouth. To complete the Sarawakcultural experience, savour some Sarawakian food at therestaurant and pick up some souvenirs at the handicraft shop.
