mechanical engineering students. It is a team of future leaders who are eager

to mark their position in world of motorsports and automotive engineering.

win. Team illuminati racers is non-profit student run organization of Lovely

Professional University dedicated to fielding a competitive formula race car &

Baja buggy in national & international design and racing events like SUPRA

SAE, FORMULA SAE & BAJA SAE.

SUPRA SAE 2012 being a national event also provides great opportunity to

Proven records of Illuminati Racers: Team had already developed a

prototype formula car before participating in the event, it was done to gain

valuable manufacturing experience. Few team members are also assisting

Lovely Professional University in its campus tram project. Active members of

the team always brought laurel to the university by participating in various

national level Tech Fests organized at various institutions.

SUPRA SAEINDIA 2012

OVERVIEW AND COMPETITION

The SUPRA SAEINDIA 2011 competition challenges teams of University

undergraduate and graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate and

compete with their own small, formula style, autocross racing cars. SUPRA

SAEINDIA 2012 organizing committee provides the participating teams the

maximum design flexibility and the freedom to express their creativity and

imaginations and hence, there are very few restrictions on the overall vehicle

design. Teams are only permitted to use Maruti 800 CC BS 3 engine and

power train supplied by Maruti Udyog Ltd. Teams typically spend little over

twelve months in designing, building, testing and preparing their vehicles

before competition. Event is similar to FSAE competition, but many rules are

modified to suit Indian conditions.

It is a project that requires the skills and theory learned from the mechanical

engineering curriculum. Two parts of the curriculum are emphasized: theory

and laboratory work. Students work with the state-of-art equipment then

manufactures the components they have designed. This teaches them the

benefits of simple practical designs and ease of manufacturing. Furthermore,

the SUPRASAE experience entails managing cost, fitting each individual’s

design into the overall assembly, and testing the components.

Cost Analysis: Objective is to submit a written report detailing the costs

associated with the building of the car. It includes, understanding the concept

of managing a manufacturing budget verses purchasing a part.

Sales Presentation: Evaluates a team’s ability to make a sales pitch to the

executives of a manufacturing firm.

Engineering Design: Evaluates the quality of engineering in the design of the

car.

Acceleration Event: Objective is to achieve the fastest time in a 75-Meter

drag race.

Skid pad Event: Measures the cornering ability of the car in a flat surface

while making constant radius turns.

Autocross Course: Evaluates the vehicle’s overall maneuverability without

the hindrance of competing cars.

Endurance and Fuel Economy: Endurance event evaluates the overall

performance and reliability of the car on a 22-Kilometer track raced by two

drivers in equal shares. Fuel Economy measures the car’s fuel efficiency.
