IDY2020 - All Aboard Online!

Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani

( Editor-in-Chief )

At the outset, I offer you a special heartfelt greeting on the occasion of the just concluded 6th International Day of Yoga (IDY), celebrated worldwide on 21st June 2020.

We have all had a most amazing IDY2020 with the whole world of Yoga coming together in a spirit of unity, all online! Yoga is the cultural heritage of India and one of the best gifts India has shared with the entire world in the spirit of “VASUDAIVA KUDUMBHAKAM”, One World-One Family!

The spirit of Yoga seems to have only gotten stronger during the COVID19 pandemic and worldwide so many are taking up the practice of Yoga to manage their stresses and maintain their holistic health.

The themes for this year suggested by the Ministry of AYUSH were “Yoga @Home” and “Yoga with Family” and it is estimated that millions joined together on that day to practice Yoga at home and with their loved ones. The Government of India initiated many new programs during this time motivating practitioners to upload their images

and videos on the social wall of the Yoga portal, Ministry of AYUSH. They were welcomed to participate in many online contests such as the video Vlogging contest (My Life-My Yoga) organized by the CCRYN, Ministry of AYUSH, and ICCR.

This time of crisis seems to have enabled many to explore the multifaceted aspects of Yoga and the Honourable Prime Minister in his 65th Mann ki Baath program on 31st may 2020 said that “Yoga has assumed importance across the world and people who were not aware of it have also started learning it. During the corona crisis, people in Hollywood to Haridwar have become consciousofthebenefitsofYoga.Sittingattheirhomes, people are learning about Yog. Yoga is good for community, immunity and unity”. He further added that in times of corona crisis, its importance has increased as Yoga is mainly about strengthening the respiratory and immune system.

All member organizations of Indian Yoga Association were proactive during this time and so many events were held online with hundreds of webinars, talks, gatherings, cultural performances, discussions, talk shows and

satsangas put up by the premier traditions of Yoga both in India and abroad. Ministry of AYUSH organized a series of online events with special appearances by the most eminent Yoga Gurus of Bharat online sharing their heartfelt and most potent blessings with all Yoga enthusiasts.

I have personally seen the immense interest generated this year online and ICYER at Ananda Ashram has organized nonstop online sessions during the times of the lockdown and these continued in full swing during the IDY celebrations with more than a dozen specialized events happening with international participation.

Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV), where I work as Director CYTER has been proactive in celebrating IDY every year and this year organized the popular 3-day International Webinar on “Role of Yoga in times of COVID-19” from 18-21 June 2020. This was organized by CYTER of SBV in collaboration with the Indian Yoga Association, ICYER at Ananda Ashram as well as Loyola Marymount University (USA), Om Yoga Studio (UK), Himalayan Yoga Tradition and Smart Safe Yoga (USA). More than 350 participants from 21 countries attended the online deliberations.

It is pertinent to remember at this time, the history of the IDY as the idea of such a commemorationwasfirstproposedbyourHon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji, during his historic speech at the United Nations General Assembly, on 27th September 2014.

He stated: “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment;harmonybetweenmanandnature;aholistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.”

India’s proposal received broad support from all Member States and a total of 177 nations co-sponsored the resolution, which is the highest number of cosponsors ever for any UNGA resolution of such nature.

We must become aware of another pandemic that COVID-19 has brought in its wake, that of Fear Psychosis. Everyone everywhere is scared to death and this is further aggravated and worsened by an unrelenting onslaught of negative news from the media. Social media has shown how it can really worsen such apprehensions and turn them into mass fear psychosis, minute by minute.

Stress, fear and negative emotions are known to weaken our immune system while Yoga (including meditation), mindfulness, positive emotions, and relaxation strengthen it. The limbic system plays a major role in triggering such emotional upheaval that then results in a weakening of the immune function.

This is where IDY 2020 remind us of the great role Yoga can play as it is very effective for prevention as well as management of all stress-related disorders. We need to refocus on our own salutogenesis (Swastha), our own inherent capacity and ability to be responsible for our health and happiness. We must move from pathogenesis, the focus on disease that worsens fear, towards salutogenesis, the focus on health that strengthens all our systems! Yoga empowers us, and enables us to take charge of our own life, thus promoting holistic health for each and every one of us.

Knowledge of inexpensive, effective and easily administrable Yogic techniques will go a long way in helping us achieve the goal of the World Health Organization to provide “physical, mental, spiritual and social health” for all sections of human society.

Every day is indeed a “Day of Yoga”, but the IDY truly gives us an opportunity to reset our priorities!

COVID-19 Pandemic may have restricted our movements, but it definitelygaveusachancetocarefullythinkabout

our health and environment. Something or many things, actions, reactions and our treatment towards Mother Nature must have really gone wrong which forced the entire world to face a situation like this. It can be rightfully said that to be free of Corona virus we need to re-connect with our roots. The 6th International Day of Yoga celebrated on June 21 every year, gave all of us that much needed opportunity.

Indian Yoga Association has been continuously making efforts to promote and propagate Yoga to help people overcome this crisis. On the occasion of IDY, as a platform that brings together all the traditions of Yoga across the world together, held an International Webinar ‘Yoga for Better Life’ jointly with Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow on June 11, 2020. Another International Webinar Yoga- A New Future in collaboration with Chatrapati Shahu ji Maharaj University which was telecasted live on DD Sports on June 23, 2020.

Both the webinars saw well-known experts of different yoga traditions, cultures, and universities coming together to celebrate Yoga!!

Keeping with the spirit we this time bring to you International Day of Yoga Special issue of Yogavani, which will give you a glimpse of IDY celebrations across Member Institutes, International Associates, Associate Members of IYA. Happy Reading!!

IYA & BBAU organizes webinar on ‘Yoga for Better Life’

With a pandemic like COVID-19, it has become

highlyimperativethatwefindasolution to this unwanted guest for thebenefitofthemankind.Inthesedifficulttimes,celebrationsof6thInternational Day of Yoga become appropriate to stress upon the importance of Yoga and to propagate the science to spread the message. Yoga is a holistic science that takes care of all the aspects of our body. It offers answer to many of our unanswered questions. We should make Yoga part of our lifestyle so as to defeat the unwanted problems.

In the wake of present situation and to mark the celebrations of IDY, Indian Yoga Association with Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow organized an online conclave Yoga for Better Life to emphasis on adopting Yoga as our lifestyle and to highlight the fact that prevention is better than cure.

The conclave saw participation from Prof Sanjay Singh, VC, BBAU, Shri Heera Lal (IAS), Addition-al Mission Director, NHM UP, Shri Bheem Singh, Director, Shree Neelkantha Yoga Kendra, Lucknow and Shri Somveer Arya, Yoga Exponent from BBAU, Lucknow and IYA Prof Harishankar Singh, HoD, Yoga Department, BBAU. From IYA, Guruji Dr HR Nagendra, Chancellor of SVYASA, Presi-dent, IYA, Swami Atmapriyananda, Vice Chancel-lor, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University, Director, IYA, Shri Subodh Tiwari, CEO, Kaivaly-

adhama, Lonavla, Vice President, IYA, Ms Antonietta Rozzi, Founder, Sarva Yoga, Italy, Shri Dr Jaideep Arya ji, Chairman, Haryana Yog Parishad, Joint Secretary, IYA, Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, Director, CYTER, Director, IYA, Smt Ekta Bouderlique, National Coordi-nator, Heartfulness, Working Director, IYA and Shri Ravi Tumuluri, Joint Secretary.

The program commenced with a welcome note by Chief Patron Prof Sanjay Singh ji. In his address he said, “BBAU as an institute of higher education consider it as its responsibility to promote the science of Yoga. Our students, teachers and staff members regularly practice Yoga and the changes are visible. “WehavenotbeenabletofindarationalsolutiontoCo-rona virus and I am sure yoga can help us overcome this crisis. Yoga is not merely physical. It takes you towards inner growth. Yoga is about service to others, purifying one physically, then mentally and then it connects you to God.”

Thereafter, Guruji Dr HR Nagendra explained the true meaning of better life. He was also the Chief Guest for the online conclave. “Better life today means better

standard of living. Swami Vivekananda called it bread earning education, where you educate only to earn.

“Withthispandemic,peoplehavestartedfind-ing solutions. We are witnessing a change in the world as people are now turning towards healthy lifestyle while indulging in service toothers.Inascientificrealm, wehavebeenable to measure everything about the physical world. However, this material paradigm fails to offer solutions for challenges like non-communicable diseases, asthma, migraine and other diseases.

“Our country is the epitome of health, wealth and dharma. We don’t have to make India a superpower, it is important that we move from selfishnesstoselflessness.Suchcrisisoreventsoccur to move us from one level to other. A paradigm shift may happen. It is the time when we move to a consciousness based paradigm.”

Talking about Integration of Yoga as a Therapy

with Modern Healthcare system, Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani said, “At any given time in Centre for Yoga Therapy Education and Re-search (CYTER) 1000 students are practicing Yoga on daily basis as part of college policy of celutogenesis, which means focus on health. Modern medicine is helpful in emergency, but in chronic diseases modern medicine has failed.

“Today, weareunabletofightCoronavirusinahealthyandefficientmannerbecauseoffear.Yogacandefinitelyplayaveryimportantrolein a time like this. Yoga empowers the individ-ual from within and it is called Sukha. Sukha makes the stress levels to go down and brings a harmonious balance of autonomic nervous system. Yoga and integrative medicine can play a very important role in a time like this.”

Presenting his thoughts on Yoga Vedanta, Swa-

mi Atmapriyananda said, “Vedanta means where knowledge ends and wisdom be-gins. It is the science of Supreme Being. Yoga is a technology of cultivating knowl-edge of the supreme spirit. Bhagawat Geeta merely in 700 verses has brought Vedanta and Yoga together. Time and space is no restriction in discovering the truths and realizing them. Corona has given us the oppor-tunity to just stay put and live with our-selves. Lock yourself within so that entire world of vision opens up within you.”

Yoga in School Edu-cation was the topic which followed the discussion about Yoga and Vedanta. Talking about the same Shri Subodh Tiwari ji said, “It is a very relevant topic. It is extremely important to start at the right time and right place. Further he mentioned that in 1962, Kaivalyadhama was declared as the firstinstituteinyogafor higher learning by Ministry of Educa-tion. “Till 1985, Yoga was merely a part of

Physical education after whichforthefirsttimeKendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan took the lead and formulated a committee for Yoga module for schools. In 1986, education policy then emphasized the need of inculcation of Yoga in school curricu-lum. Teacher training in yoga were under-taken, national level researches were under-taken to promote yoga in schools.

“In 2017-18, NCERT formulated module for secondary and higher secondary classes. Now, CBSE schools across the globe have a

“In present times, we can see that there is lots of stress among students. Policies should be made to help students bring back the required balance in their life. We are disconnecting from our roots. We should use Patanjali Sutras to move for-ward in these times of crisis. If we are able to inculcate Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Yama and Ni-yama in our policies we will have a better life.”

Putting forward her views on Yoga education in West-ern World, Ms. Antonietta Rozzi said, “Situation in the West is different from India. Yoga is part of Indian cul-ture, whereas it is important to understand that in western countries there are some sociological and cultural mechanisms that may need

standard reference point. As per a survey by Kaivalyadhama, NCERT, MHRD and CBSE most of the schools do indulge in Yoga activities. Same can be said for Yogasana Competitions.”

He further proposed that Universities and IYA should lead in re-survey research about Yoga in institutes of higher education. This will help the government in policy making.

Taking on from there, Shri Dr. Jaideep Arya ji said, “When we talk about policy in Yoga educa-tion, it is important for all of us to understand that we want to develop guru-shishya parampara and our goal is transformation of students.

14

penetration for introducing yoga in schools.

“Yoga many have become very popular in the west, but they lack proper understanding of Yoga. Yoga here is exotic and fashionable. People and authorities are confused. In or-dered to be really effective substantial modi-ficationofasocietymustberootedinitsownculture and this process starts from educa-tion,” she adhered.

Talking about the right way of presenting Yoga to the students, Smt. Ekta Bouderlique emphasized on the fact that if we want stu-dents to adopt Yoga, we teachers and faculties will have to experience it ourselves. “Education is about practicality, it is about giving solutions, but it is also about giving an environment as well. Guru-shishya parampara is the most beautiful possibility that India had. We all have to come together and stand for our future. We should not give up on our values otherwise ours will be the last generation holding upon these values.

“Let us give the youth our values transmitted

to us by our elders in a packaging they are inter-ested in. Also, we have to let them experience. Yoga is not merely a sci-ence, it is deep observa-tion,” she added.

Presenting his views Shri Heera Lal ji talked about implementations of Yoga at the ground level. “Prevention is bet-ter than cure. I had been practicing yoga from last 5 years, 2 hours every day in the morn-ing and I can proudly say that I am free of any

form of disease. In my District Banda, I had been sensi-tizing people in 470 villages about Yoga with the help of volunteers. We also organized Yoga trainings at the block levels. “As the DM, I propagated, popularised and inspired people about Yoga so that they can adopt it and make it part of their lifestyle,” he added. Shri Bheem Singh ji said, “Yoga is the science of life. However, we are failing because we are implementing it as a science. The practical aspect is lacking and we are com-promising. Compromising is nowhere desired and permit-ted in Yoga.

“Simple preaching of yoga is not a solution. We have to promote guru-shishya parampara because a guru makes an individual a dexterous person and dexterity in action is called Yoga.”

Shri Somveer Arya who is a Yoga exponent in Atlanta echoed similar sentiments. He said, “To propagate Yoga and teach yoga we have to experience Yoga. Adopt practice and set yourself as an example.

The program concluded with a Guruji Dr HR Nagendra explaining Ananda. The Vote of Thanks was extended by Prof Harishankar Singh.

16

SPECIAL ISSUEJULY 2020 www.yogaiya.in

“This IDY is really special as we are looking at Yoga to strengthen immune system. We should pledge to include yoga in our lives not only to help ourselves, but the entire humanity. We feel privileged to be collaborating with IYA to spread message of Yoga” she added.

Being the torchbearer of Yoga, Guruji Dr HR Nagendra, Chief Guest spoke about relevance of Yoga and how can yoga help us all create a new future. He said, “COVID-19 will bring a paradigm shift in our understanding to move from matter based paradigm to consciousness based approach, which will be the new bases of life.“Change in the lifestyle will reap dividends. If we learn to give without expectations, it will be very helpful. It is important for the youth to understand that their ambition is very small. Living a life free of stress and relaxation is what yoga gives us and is of utmost importance. We have to move towards higher way of life.

17

SPECIAL ISSUEJULY 2020

www.yogaiya.in

“The professions or passion that the youth is running after presently only gives them stress, tension, lack of peace and unhappiness. Whereas, if we follow the natural law, we may always move to a higher level that will offer us peace, calmness, contentment, unison with your soul.

Yoga is the revolution in the making. New world order will come up. IYA was established to synergies the efforts all Yoga masters and now it is the time that IYA comes forward and show the world the way to live.”

Agreeing to Guruji and answering the question about the immediate future we are looking Sri R Subrah-manyam, Guest of Honour said, “IDY on June 21 is celebrated to rediscover our roots, the roots on which theentireedificeisbased.Yogainternallytransformsanindividualbecauseitbringsclarityofthinking, disciplined way of living. Yoga is a very personal experience. It is in this crisis that the best of the human-ity is to come out. Yoga is the most relevant in these times. Everybody must take it and explore it.”Talking about how yoga will appeal to youth, he said, “The right way of understanding yoga is by under-standing that our youth is open to learning. If I get ten early adopters who can experience yoga and then propagate, it will really spread. Every campus must have a yoga club. Let’s target only 30 students in every institution. If the youth is convinced, we will be able to help our future generations. The teaching of Yoga to the youth is insurance for our future. In higher education campuses, this should, can and will hap-pen with some amount of persuasion.

Putting forth his views about social justice and empowerment, he said, “In social justice, we take care of marginalized section and drug addiction is a big issue. We have introduced yoga for drug addicts in cam-puses,whichhavebroughtimprovementinattitudeandwillingnesstofightproblemsrelatedtotacklingwithdrawal symptoms. We have introduced this in our mandate and we have requested IYA to train our yoga trainers better.”

Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati as an invited speaker enlightened all with her views on how yoga is the an-swer to all our queries. “What is in store for us in future is what we have to create. This is the new normal. We saw Mother Earth healing, we saw Ganga getting clean all by itself, air is so clean and the environ-ment is getting better. This virus is helping Mother Earth restore its order which we could not do in so many years.

18

SPECIAL ISSUEJULY 2020 www.yogaiya.in

“Our lifestyle is one of the reasons of COVID-19. Our economy is at loggerheads with Mother Earth. We have forgotten to differentiate between feeling well and feeling good. New normal should be where in the economy we could be well and be well and healthy. It should not be about how good we can produce in our factories rather how deeply connected we can be. Yoga is union. Yoga connects us with fullness in ourselves. Yoga helps us experience union with the Supreme in our heart. Even if we follow the four yamas— Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya and Aparigraha, we could solve everything in the world that we are facing today.

I am very impressed with IYA as it brings together all the threads of thee streams of Indian culture of Yoga,” she added.

Dr Rajvi Mehta who was also an invited speaker said, “Guruji BKS Iyengar learned yoga, experience it and was amazed with the transformation. He then took Yoga to the west in 1950s. Yoga helps people under-stand their religiosity better. It is far beyond any dis-crimination. While we are working on popularity and promotion of yoga, we need to ensure that we don’t go down to the least common denominator. As prac-titioners, who will be passing it to the next generation we need to see that the yoga pyramid goes upwards. If we practice yoga in its true essence we become better at what we do. Yoga takes time.

“We can start with 15 minutes or two hours a week. Ifstudentswilllikeittheywillfindtimeforit.Yogashould be promoted for oneself,” she adhered. Next in the list of invited speakers was Shri Kaustabh Desikachar who talked about the relevance of Yoga in the present times. He said, “Yoga is always relevant inthedifficulttimes.PatanjaligaveusYogawhenpeople were going through the dark era. Yoga has beenpartofIndiasinceverylong.Thisisnotthefirstcrisis Yoga is witnessing. Yoga has played a very im-portant role in these down turns. These are the times when that you need something to elevate us. Yoga being holistic addresses our mind, emotions, body and spiritual dimensions. It is most helpful in such times for many of us to engage in yoga so that can lift us up. Yoga is to help humanity.”

SpeakingabouttheinfluenceofYogaonourculture, he said, “I see it in a different way. In 1900s, there were very few masters like Siva-nanda, Kuvalyananda, Sir TKV Desikachar, but the knowledge was enormous. Today, we have so many yoga masters, but the level of knowl-edge is very low.

“I with my friends at IYA want to set higher quality education standards where Indians can carry yoga to the west and all over the world. I feel that my experts from Asia will carry the message of Yoga throughout the world because of the cultural baggage in a positive sense that you can carry. Yoga cannot be measured like people would want to do in the west. Yoga is a spiritual science. I consider myself a carrier of traditional yoga and not the trendy yoga that keeps on changing. At IYA, we must ensure that high quality yoga reaches every corner of the world.”

Further talking about the Guru-shishya param-para and how can it be inculcated in our uni-versitieshesaid,“Patanjaliinhisfirstversehas said that there has to be a teacher student discipline. There is no other way of learning

19

SPECIAL ISSUEJULY 2020

www.yogaiya.in

Yoga. Yoga is an anushasanam. The techniques of pranayama, asana, mudras have to be taught in a careful manner so that they are not harmful for the students.

“Guru-shishya parampara is not going to end in Corona. We have witnessed much worst crisis where there is true shishya, there is a true guru and no pandemic can take that away.”

Speaking on similar terms, Prof Madanlal Brahma Bhatt presented his view about the importance of yoga. He said, “To keep our body healthy is the most important requirement of a human’s body. Yoga can show us the way to deal with irregulari-ties in and outside body.”

Yoga is about discipline and who would have been better than Shri Ved Prakash Sharma(IPS) to talk about it. He had been practicing yoga since very long. On asking what inspired him to serve people

through yoga he said, “I had been practicing yoga since very long. I started serving the country as an IPS. I witnessed that around 80 per cent of the crime happens because of addiction. Addiction leads to crime. I applied Yoga with such criminals to change their way of thinking. Yoga changes you physically and mentally both. Yoga can help you overcome tension, stress and will make you a bet-ter person.

Concluding the session, Dr Harishankar Singh talked about the role of yoga in shaping the future. He said, “Yoga has always been a part of our life and roots. Unfortunately, we have been distanc-ing ourselves from our roots. Youth is enchanted with the outer world. He is now stressed, is feeling hopeless.

“Yoga is the best medicine to achieve our goals with focused efforts. Yoga gives hope. With Yoga studentscanbenefitthesocietyandhumanity.

Yoga helps in ending dilemma. We have started counseling centre where students are encouraged to practice Yoga.”

The program ended with Dr Praveen Katiyar extending vote of thanks. The webinar was aired of DD Sports and Live on all social media platforms.
