A 26, 2020

Dear Parishioners,

As the COVID19 Pandemic continues to cripple our way of life, many of us now wear masks in public. They are

supposed to protect us from contagion. Many people have made their own masks. It is interesting to see the different styles

and patterns. They reveal something about our inner selves. I have trouble recognizing people wearing their masks, but

many seem to recognize me. I guess the collar gives me away! This weekend’s gospel tells the story of the road to

Emmaus. It almost seems that Jesus is wearing a mask. He is walking along with the disciples, engaging and discussing the events of

holy week. The scripture says, “their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.” After the long journey they beg Jesus to stay with

them. That evening, Jesus took bread and broke it at table. With that, we are told, their eyes were opened! They recognized Jesus in the

breaking of the bread. It’s a reminder that we recognize Jesus in the breaking of bread at Mass. For now, we are not able to have that

privilege. For now, we go about limited activities wearing a mask. As much as we may not recognize one another nor clearly see one

another’s face, we know that a person made in the image and likeness of God lurks under our masks. Let us remember to see the face

of Christ in all of our interactions during this challenging time.

          Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Rev. John P. Melnick

Please join in celebrating

Fr. John P. Melnick’s 20th Anniversary

ordained as a priest, this Wednesday, April 29th!

Fr. Melnick has been a leader, a pastor, in many

parishes continuing the service in which Christ

entrusted to His Apostles. We have been blessed to

have him as a pastor who listens to his congregation

to exert positive responses and visions to ensure the

continued growth of our parish.

Spiritually, he has guided us to be a faithful community, honest

with ourselves, seeking only to better our relationship with God.

Professionally, he has been tactful, compassionate and

insightful remedying physical structures for safety and

beautification, supervising our financial necessities and use,

unselfishly tending to the infirm, utilizing committees to participate

in generating new proposals and ideas, supporting our youth in

education and belief along with archdiocesan responsibilities.

Physically, he has attended par ish and school social events

making that a priority in his calendar. He has visited those that

cannot get to church, tended to the ill and needs of any parishioner

or guest without hesitation. He is a handson pastor, lifting,

moving, and creating an inviting parish!

He has truly served many people of God and spread the Good

News! So, again, please join in celebrating this special anniversary

and give thanks for this man of service as it is very good news!

The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal provides help to those in

need! Together, we can and do make a profound difference

in the lives of many individuals and families, in a way that

exceeds anything we could hope to achieve on our own.

Please consider supporting this important initiative. Every

gift makes a difference. Organizations such as St. Gabriel

Summer School Camp Program, CRIS Radio, Mary’s Place

and Easterseals Capital Region Eastern CT Veterans

Initiative, right here in our own town received funding from the

Appeal’s Vicariate Outreach Program which serves our local

neighbors. All funds contributed to the Archbishop’s Annual

Appeal are used exclusively for the purposes outlined in the

Appeal literature, which can be found at https://

archdioceseofhartford.org/appeal/ No Appeal funds are ever

used for legal fees or settlements..

 va raci! Fid, M 1s'

The first twenty minutes before the Lord

really present in the Eucharist is a sacred time of

intimacy between us and him. It is a time to just

be present to our God who welcomes us and

accepts us. In the words of St. John Vianney, it is

a time when “I look at Him and he looks at me.” Before the

Eucharist is a time when we lean on Jesus’ breast, like John did

at the last supper, and allow his heart to speak to ours. This was

the episcopal motto of Blessed John Henry Newman:cor ad cor

loquitur(heart speaks to heart). We begin to grow in our “interior

knowledge of the Lord”as we contemplate his words, his life, and

his real presence before us (St. Ignatius of Loyola,Spiritual

Exercises, 104). Here is the zone into which we are drawn in the

first third of our holy hour, where our heart speaks to his. It is also

a time when we listen to him and allow him to speak to us. This is

a time when we can tell him everything about how we are and

how we feel. It is a time to tell him about our day and to ask his

help in ways in which we need it. Above all it is a time to thank

the Lord for his presence and action in our lives and to adore him

for his goodness, truth, and mercy. It is also an opportunity to

present to him the things we don’t understand, our sins, failings,

and the worries that burden us. In this twenty minutes of our holy

hour, we bask in the light of his love that never fails us.

The second twenty minutes can be a time when we

intercede for all the people we know and are part of our lives. At

this stage of our prayer, we bring to the Lord all who have asked

us to pray for them, our families and friends both living and dead.

In this time we pray for all we have met in the past day or week,

the conversations we had, the things we have said and done.

Often during this time in the holy hour, some person will arise in

our minds who we feel the Lord is calling us to pray for, reach out

to, to contact or to visit. It is also a time to focus on what lies

aheadour next appointment, our next challenge, or perhaps a

courageous conversation we need to have with someone to clear

the air. In this time of prayer, our hearts are reminded that our

call is to love others in Christ’s name, and that the same Lord

before us in the Eucharist is the same Lord present in everyone,

especially in the least of his brothers and sisters (cf. Matt

25:31ff).

The final twenty minutes can be a time when we pray for

the entire human family and the whole universe. So we might

pray for persecuted Christians around the world, for the victims of

famine, and for an end to conflicts and wars. We might pray for

the Church around the world, for the Holy Father on a foreign

visit, or for all missionaries away from home. We might pray for

the environment and for the care of the earth, thinking of ways to

conserve more and consume less. For his beauty revealed in

creation, this is a time to thank God for the sun, moon, and stars

that were made through his Word present before us in the

Eucharist. Finally, we can pray in this time for the peace among

all nations for which Jesus lived and diedand that it might

become a reality in our troubled world today. (Fr. Billy Swan)

The Kid Connection: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Easter

When we gather to celebrate Mass, what special meal do we remember? What special things did Jesus do at that meal?

That meal was the most important meal that Jesus shared with his disciples, but Jesus ate other

meals with his friends too remember the Gospel story when Jesus multiplied bread and fish to feed

a large crowd? After his Resurrection, the Gospels tell us that Jesus appeared to his disciples and

shared meals with them. Today’s Gospel is about one of these meals.

In today’s Gospel what are the two disciples doing when Jesus approaches them?

Do the disciples recognize Jesus as he approaches them? As the disciples talk about all that

happened to Jesus, how does Jesus respond to them?

When they arrive in Emmaus the disciples invite the ‘stranger’ to stay with them, and they have a

meal together.

What happens during the meal? What do the disciples do after the meal?

In some important ways, this Gospel story reminds us of what we do when we gather for Mass.

We read & hear the Scripture readings, and try to understand how we can live as God wants us to.

That part of the Mass is called the Liturgy of the Word.

Then we share a meal, doing what Jesus did blessing and breaking the bread. That part of the Mass is called the Liturgy of the

Eucharist. Every time we celebrate Mass we know that Jesus is present to us in the Word and in a special way in the Eucharist.

And like the disciples we heard about on the road to Emmaus, at the end of the Mass we are sent to share the good news of Jesus with

others we "go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.” Gospel means Good News!

How can we share the good news of Jesus with others? We can do that in the ways we care for our friends & family. By sharing what

we have with people who don’t have what they need. We can pray for people in need. (turn page for answers!)

It is with a sad heart that the St.

Gabriel School Golf Tournament

Committee had to cancel the Golf

Tournament, May 30th, for this year.

As one of the school’s greatest

fundraisers, it was a tough decision,

but the safety of each individual

supporter was crucial.

Many thanks to all the supporters of the Golf

Tournament throughout the years in hopes of picking it

up again next year.

Prayers for your good health and safety will remain the

focus now until we meet again on the greens!

The health and well being of our community is

our top priority. With this in mind, we have

decided to cancel the FORE FACS Golf

Classic on May 11, 2020. We are looking into

the viability of rescheduling our golf event

later this year. We have so much gratitude for

our sponsors and attendees over the years and look forward

to gathering again at this wonderful event.

We offer our warmest wishes to all and embrace the hope that

this sacred season represents. Stay well and be safe and we

hope to connect with you soon!

Bishop Peter Rosazza Social Justice Conference

We have been working as hard as ever this year to prepare for

the annual Bishop Rosazza Social Justice Conference. This linchpin

event of our office brings together those involved in social ministry

from across our own archdiocese and beyond for formation, inspiration

and connections.

As you know, concern about the coronavirus and the risk it

poses for major gatherings has caused the cancellation of many

events. With regret, we are cancelling our physical gathering in June

out of concern for the health and wellbeing of our attendees and

speakers in these uncertain times.

BUT we have GOOD NEWS! Instead, we will launch a new

ONLINE experience on June 6, the original conference date, and

attendance will be FREE and open to all!

Our theme,Open Wide Our Hearts, will be offered as a year

long “online conference” in response to the recent US Bishops’ Pastoral

Letter on Racism. The topic is too important, and too timely, to let it go.

We will begin on Saturday, June 6th with a 90 minute

webinar featuring our scheduled keynote speaker, Alejandro Aguilera

Titus.SAVE THE DATE! The vir tual conference will continue

throughout the year with monthly webinars and events. This special

opportunity to learn and grow together will culminate, hopefully, in our

regular gathered event in June, 2021.

Stay tuned for more details. And stay safe stay healthy!

Answers: Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples. He prayed a

prayer of blessing, broke the bread, and gave the bread to his

disciples. They are leaving Jerusalem, and are talking about

Jesus’ crucifixion and death. No. Jesus asks the disciples to

tell him about what had happened in Jerusalem, and then he

interprets those events for them using Scripture. Jesus blesses

the bread, breaks it, and shares it with the disciples. The

disciples recognize that the stranger is Jesus, and they go back

to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples what has happened.
