Skipper becomes first Eagle Scout at K-Bay in four years

Sgt. Michael Wiener Combat Correspondent

Hard work and dedication were just a couple of the tools used by a Marine family member here to be the first Eagle Scout on base in four years. Nathaniel Skipper, the son of

Janice and Col. Charles Skipper, was initiated into the Eagle Scout order Jan. 4 after completing a tough set of necessary require- ments.

"The hardest and most time con- suming thing I had to do was my project," Skipper said. "It took about a year to do."

"We're very proud of him and his project," said Janice Skipper. "He worked hard on it."

Skipper made an informational video and pamphlet about MCB Hawaii for newcomers to the base.

"A lot of the information people got before was by word of mouth," said the 15 year-old Damian High School freshman. "The movie talks about the base's history and recreation and there's a segment on the dangers around base."

The movie is part of a new-join brief given to all incoming Marines and Sailors. But making a movie wasn't all Skipper had to do to make the rank of Eagle Scout.

Joining Scouts easy to do here

Cpl. M.V. Trindade Combat Correspondent

Early in the 1900s, Robert Baden-Powell, a British Army major, penned the guidebook, "Aid to Scouting."

The guidebook became the catalyst in starting the Boy Scout movement which in a few short years, enveloped the western hemisphere.

Baden-Powell discovered many young boys had taken a liking to his book. With this in mind, Baden-Powell took 20 boys to the Brown Sea Island the summer of 1907. "Little did they all know, but this was to become the very first Boy Scout meeting," said Janet Washam, assistant den leader for Bear den 7 here. The Boy Scouts is a program designed to give boys and

young men direction at a young age. By reaching the boys early enough, they hope to instill in them the moral strength to resist the social ills encountered in today's world. Chartered by Congress in 1916, the Boy Scouts "informally educate the responsiblities of participating cit- izenship," as stated in the Cub Scout Leader handbook, "(it helps to) provide growth in moral strength and character, all done in the spirit of fun."

Cub Master Rey Romero started his child on the program when he was in first grade in Groton Connecticut.

"I had so little time out there (as a recruiter)," said Romero, "so I promised my son that once we moved, I'd become more involved with the him and the Scouts." Romero also saw the benefits scouting seemed to have on the kids he recruited.

"What I found was that most of the kids I put in who had no prior (police) records had some sort of experience

"Twenty-one merit badges, 11 of which are required by all Boy Scouts, are necessary, as well as serving in a leadership position and showing true Scout spirit," Skipper said.

Skipper plans to stay with his troop as long as he can, and also become more involved in the Order of the Arrow. But he'll never forget what the Boy Scouts gave him.

"I've learned a lot of new skills and things about the nation and government I never would have known," Skipper said. "Scouting has been a very positive experi- ence."

Both the Boy and Girls Scouts offer opportunities for young children to feel pride through earning badges.

in the Scouts. I can't say if it was leadership they got out of it, but they definitely took something with them." Den 7 belongs to Pack 225 here on base and is chartered

by Mokapu Elementary School. Den committee meet- ings are held once a week at the Scout Hut in building 455 next to the tax center and 7-day store. The next Pack committee meeting will be Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. at Mokapu Elementary.

Parents interested in having their boys join are encour- aged to come and adults wishing to become a Scout leader are also welcome. Points of contact are Romero at 254-1028 or 257-2513. Parents interested in having their daughters join the Girl Scouts can contact Pat. Kraft, the Girl Scout Recruiter, at 254-0456.

2/3 Marines learn call-for-fire techniques CAMP HANSEN, Okinawa. -

Hidden in the brush, a forward observer spots a formation of infantrymen and tanks moving into position 3,000 meters away.

Quickly, he calculates the loca- tion of the enemy through a series of known points and radios in a direction for fire to an artillery battery. They respond with a bar- rage of fire, destroying the threat

before it could bring its weapons to bear on the observer's position.

Thanks to the training given at the Division Schools' Forward Observers Course, scenarios such as this one, in which the threat was wiped out and Marine lives were

saved, could happen in battle. "The object of the FOC is to

teach Marines to accurately locate targets and adjust to hit them," said GySgt. Steve Gordon, the field

artillery operations chief and FOC chief instructor. "There are three meth- ods of target location: polar, grid and shift." The polar method of location is considered the easiest, said Gordon, and is main- ly what the students use. The classroom acts as the observation post and stu-

dents base their calculations to the target by line of sight, judging the distances via landmark. The

artillery then fires one shot to see if they are on target. If they are, all guns fire and the threat will be neutralized.

Grid location is the standard method of locating a forward observer uses. With this type of loca- tion, the artillery does not need to know the location of the observer.

The observer radios in a six-digit grid location for the artillery to lay fire on.

The final method of location is shift. With this technique, the observer finds a point at which he is very familiar, such as a tree- line or crossroad. From there, he calculates and radios in the enemy's approximate position from the known point.

In all instances, if the artillery is not on target, the observer must know how to radio in adjustments for fire. "Not only has this system been

used by mortarmen and the

infantry, but pilots have also gone through this course to learn to call-for-fire from the air," said Gordon.

"This system is a great aid for all Marines," said Cpl. Richard A. Niznik, a machine gunner, with Co. E, 2nd Battalion, 3d Marines, on the unit deployment program from Hawaii. "In the 03 field, it is our job to know these things; it

could mean the differ- ence between life and death." This system also saves the Marine Corps approximately $100,000 per year in ammunition and field training costs, Gordon said. It uses 12 slide projec- tors to simulate differ- ent terrains, enemy locations and explo- sions. The slides are projected through mir- ror boxes so the explo- sions can appear to change locations with

13th MEU enforces no-fly zone over Kuwait Cpl. Matt Hagerman

Combat Correspondent

ALI AL SALEM AIR BASE, Kuwait - Operation Desert Storm was just seven years ago, but tensions with Iraq still run high. U.S. military forces, including the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), are contin- uing to enforce the no-fly zone over southern Iraq as part of Operation Southern Watch.

The 13th MEU(SOC)'s six AV-8B Harrier aircraft are busy flying sorties several times a day to ensure no Iraqi aircraft cross the 33rd parallel as man- dated by the United Nations. The Marine

aviators have joined with pilots from the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and Kuwaiti Air Force to patrol the no-fly zone in Iraq. Several F-14 Tomcats, F-16 Falcons, F-15 Eagles and F-18 Hornets maintain U.S. air superiority with their fighter support. Harriers and A-10 Thunderbolts ensure

ground threats can be dealt with, while EF-111 Raven and EA-6B Prowler radar jamming aircraft contribute to the mis- sion by keeping the patrolling aircraft shrouded from enemy surface-to-air defenses. Also lending a hand by provid- ing aerial refueling capabilities are a few KC-130 Hercules.

To prepare for participation in

Operation Southern Watch, the Harrier detachment from the VMA-214 Black Sheep squadron sent a liaison officer to the Joint Task Force-Southwest Asia, headquarters at Eskan Village, Saudia Arabia. The first officer assigned this duty was Capt. David Prislin, a Harrier pilot and future operations officer for the detachment with HMM-164, the MEU's composite squadron. "I spent two and a half weeks up there, making sure we understood and adhered to the rules of the operation. They (JTF-SWA) run the whole show for OSW," he said.

Flying in a real world operation is a first for many of these pilots.

"The caliber of these flights can't be

duplicated (in training). It's a unique opportunity," said Maj. Sean Blochberger, a Harrier pilot from Glendale, Ariz. Operation Southern Watch is also an excellent training vehicle, providing the pilots a chance to work in a combined arms and combined forces environment. "This is the best training I've had in my

life. I've gotten extensive weaponeering training on what types of weapons to uti- lize on different targets. This is also the first time I've ever had the chance to integrate with other U.S. and foreign air- craft packages in a large exercise over enemy territory," said Capt. John Wilkin, a Harrier pilot and the detachment oper- ations officer.

Sing me to sleep anytime

Diane LaMarche Marine Fomity Member

fter reading the In Your Opinion by

anet Washam (Hawaii Marine, Jan. 29), I felt I had to make a state- ment - not every woman shares her opinion.

I fondly remember my first morning here two and a half years ago. I woke up that morning to - yes - Marines singing cadence. What went through my

mind was not anger at being awakened a "oh my God in tree morning," but an image of many men working together for a common goal, and pride that my husband could be one of them.

I then rolled over with a smile on my face and let my personal choir of men sing me back to sleep.

When I married a Marine and signed my little con- tract, I knew it was a haz- ardous job and I agreed to it. I also knew the Marine

Corps was steeped in many time-honored traditions. Cadence is a small part of it, but it is still tradition. I also knew there would be good and hard times (deployments, separations and god forbid, even war).

But because my husband was a Marine before he met me, I understood it was his choice and his commitment. It is his job to go, to do, to train and be prepared to defend his and our country.

Ladies, no one asked us to come to Hawaii; our husbands had orders and we came to be supportive and be a family. Orders are one thing, but choice is another. It was your hus-

band's choice to join the military or reenlist; no one ordered him to. It was both your choices to marry, to live on base, to have children and work 12 hours a night.

Because we made all these personal decisions, should we now impose our personal opinions on their time-honored traditions. Whether we like it or not

our husbands are govern- ment property. But we chose to live and rent here because we could be out in town. My advice, get over it or move out in town. Meanwhile, you can all

sing me back to sleep any- time.

Making most of Marine family Melissa Vestal

Marine Family Meows/

s I was reading Janet Washam's ebuttal (Hawaii

Marine, Jan. 29) of Sgt. Michael Wiener's commen- tary (Hawaii Marine, Jan. 22), I realized the and I have several things in com- mon. First, like Washam, I am

married to a gunnery sergeant. We married after his MOS school. I very much agree with her opinion toward early morning cadence, as Marines run PT near housing at or before the crack of dawn.

I too feel I married the man of my dreams, someone I will spend the rest of my life with, not the Marine Corps. We have persevered through 11 moves, from com- munity to base housing, to Japan, B-billets and deploy- ments, all within 15 years. We will celebrate our 15th anniversary in June, and

these past 15 years have been the best years of each of our lives. We have had four children, moved to places we would have never had the opportunity to go to, met people all over the world and made friendships with people we normally never would have met.

Granted, the schools have not always been the best in the places we've been, but out of the seemingly bad situation, we were intro- duced to some- thing new and different - home schooling. It has been something which has enriched all of our lives, not just our childrens'.

While I agreed with Washam, it saddened me that she expressed hatred for the Marine Corps. My

point is, yes, there are things about the Corps which are not good, things I wish would be changed. The Corps is not sensitive to the things "family" stands for.

But this is where we, as families, have to be strong and pull together. Our hus-

bands who are family oriented will be the voice in the Corps when family members can't voice our con- cerns and opinions about things which oppose the family. Some things can be changed, stopped or altered, and some things can't, such as the hours Marines do battal-

ion PT, standing duty and other things. Things which can be changed, like chanti- ng cadence through housing, will be changed by Marines who have their hearts where they should be - with their families.

saddened me that she expressed

hatred for the Marine Corps.'

MELISSA VESTAL

After all, the Marines are and should be a proud bunch of guys. They train hard for a job which is not glam- orous, easy or convienent. There will always be a Marine or two in the crowd who wants to be a hard--. But if those others are like my husband, they not only train hard, but they love hard. And like the country they

swore to protect when they joined the Marine Corps, they will also keep their promise to love and protect their spouse and family. I, unlike Washam, love the Marine Corps. I am proud to say we are a Marine Corps family, that I'm mar- ried to a Marine and a darn good one at that, because after all, we will retire with the Marine Corps and it will be with us for the rest of our lives. I appreciate the opportunities we have had while serving our country together as a family, side-by- side, with the Corps.

One, two, three, four; I love the United States Marine Corps!

Hilary Nixon Marine Family Member

Ifeel it is important to realize not all family members

share Janet Washam's opinion, nor do we neces- sarily believe Sgt. Michael Wiener's opinion is off the mark.

However, it wasn't until I read the last paragraph of Janet Washam's letter (Hawaii Marine, Jan. 29) that my blood began to boil.

I find it hard to believe Washam feels the Marine Corps is no place to raise a family. From the time

my son was born to our recent arrival here, friends and neighbors have gone out of their way to be helpful. Whether it was a last-minute babysitter, mowing an overgrown lawn or simply someone to talk to, the Marine Corps family has been there to assist. It is my opinion the

Marine Corps goes out of its way to prepare fami- lies for the irregularities of Marine Corps life. I can assure you not many civilian companies spend millions of dollars each year to prepare family members for the inevitable business trips which come up. And yes,

some civilian families are often subject to months apart as well.

My husband has partic- ipated in his fair share of deployments. He missed the birth of his only child, and vacations have been cut short because he chose to serve his country. I was well aware of this when we got married and knew my husband's oath to his country would sometimes have to come before his oath to me. During the history of the United States, men and

women have gone to war to protect and defend Americans. This includes American fami- lies and the rights and privileges they have earned. If Washam's opinion is widespread, then my sym- pathy extends to all Marines;

attitudes like hers nega- tively affect morale.

If my husband is in the heat of battle, I hope the Marine fighting next to him has an understand- ing, supportive family who respects his career choice rather than on who openly expresses her hatred for the Corps.

I can honestly say I love the Marine Corps and all that it stands for. Semper fi!

Marines help with first step CpI. Steven Williams

Combat Correspondent

With fire in his eyes, a young man chal- lenges the obstacle before him.

In order to safely cross booby-trapped terri- tory, he and his three compadres must find an element instrumental to survival and mission accomplishment - teamwork. The young man's dilemma, in the process of

making Marines, enforces the concept that teamwork is vital to leadership growth of young Marines. And in the case of 25 young poolees who took on the Leadership Reaction Course here Saturday, it's their introduction to a team they will soon be a part of, accord- ing to SSgt. Raymond Archibeque, a Marine Corps recruiter in Kaneohe.

"Teamwork is key out here," said Archibeque. "They're learning to accomplish tasks they've never faced before."

"It's building us up inside and making us believe in ourselves," said Rex Winter, an 18- year -old Kihei native who is striving to become a reconnaissance Marine. "By the time we get ready to go to boot camp, we're ready to become Marines as well as leaders."

The seeds of the Marine Corps have been planted in these young men and women with their decisions to take on the Marine chal- lenge, according to Archibeque. Bringing them to base to interact with Marines while in the Delayed Entry Program ensures blos- soms that will only bloom brighter with training and experience.

"I looked up to the Marines who helped me when I was getting ready to go to boot camp," said Cpl. Erich Cuadros, a supply

clerk with Supply Company, Combat Service Support Group 3, who volunteered along with 13 other Supply Co. Marines to help the poolees. "It pumps them up," said Cuadros. "With

us out here helping them, they start think- ing 'I want to be part of this family - one of the few.'"

The Marine interaction also allows the poolees to talk to Marines from various job fields.

"About 85 percent of the people in the DEP don't know what they want to do in the Marine Corps," said Archibeque. "By talking and mingling with different Marines, they see all different sides of the Marine Corps."

"We get a feel for how the Marines operate," said Winter. "It helps us prepare to be Marines." "We try to give them as much insight

as we can," said Cuadros. "They get a little idea of what they will face." The LRC is just a drop in the bucket

compared to what the blossoming young poolees will face in the Corps, but according to determined Marines-to-be like Winter, it's a drop that will make them leaders and put them working alongside some of the same Marines who showed them the ropes on a small obstacle course in Hawaii.

Military Police Department teams up with NY cops

Cpl. Steven Williams Combat Correspondent

Military policemen with Military Police Department here got to see how veteran cops do business as they trained with a few New York state troopers last week.

The troopers, who are reservists with Military Police Company, Marine Forces Pacific, trained with MPD in special reac- tion team operations, alcohol and drug influence detection and completed annual standard Marine Corps requirements.

"These Marines are the duty experts in the civilian law enforcement section," said Maj. Barry C. Neulen, the deputy provost marshal with MPD here. "This gives us training with subject matter expertise in areas which our MPs may have limited experience." "It's mutually benefitial," said WO Mark

A. Dischner, an 8-year NY state trooper and investigations officer. "We train them in things such as radar deployment and they train us in things like SRT."

"We did training with the LTI 20-20 laser radar," said Sgt. Michael J. Niezgoda, a 5-year state trooper and patrol supervisor. "With this technology, you can use cross hairs to detect individ- ual vehicles. You can read speeds from up to a mile away."

The military policemen teamed up to deploy radar at the front gate for a sur- vey to see if there is a speeding problem.

The military police caught more than two dozen vehicles doing in excess of 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit.

"We just wanted to increase the aware- ness of the posted speed limits approach- ing the main gate and exiting the base," said Neulen. "Coming off a highway, a lot of people aren't slowing down enough prior to approaching the gate and it's cer- tainly a potential safety problem and a risk to our MP gate sentries."

The MPs also deployed radar in residen- tial areas to make the base community

aware of speed limits there as well. Due to the number of children living in the area and pedestrian traffic, the likelihood for injury due to automobile accidents is high in those areas.

The reservist Marines also brought their annual Marine Corps training requirements up to date, completing swim qualifications and a physical fitness test.

"It increased our manpower and promot- ed safety and security awareness to include traffic enforcement," said Neulen.

ECDP seeks care providers LCpI. Barry Proctor

Combat Correspondent

The Early Childhood Development Program here is looking for a few good providers.

Free classes are held every

two months for anyone who wishes to be certified as a childcare provider, said Toni Henson, the in-home child- care coordinator with ECDP. "The base really needs

more providers," said

Digital photo by LCpI. Barry Proctor

Keana Puaoi, a teacher at the CDC, pushes children on a swing at the CDC. Overcrowding is forcing parents to find alternative childcare options.

Henson. "Child-care facili- ties on base simply can't provide for all the children we have here."

The next scheduled classes start the third week in April, Henson said.

Classes run on a six-day schedule, covering more than 40 hours of material in eight-hour days. Classes are slated to go from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Right now, when the April classes start is tenta- tive," said Henson. "We're shooting for the third week. We need at least five people to apply to hold the class- es."

To reserve a seat for the classes, go to the ECDP office located near the base theater on Mokapu Drive and fill out an application.

Providers are required to be residents here to be cer- tified, according to Henson.

For those who aren't able to attend day courses, the ECDP is interested in pro- viding night classes for childcare certification, said Henson.

"If the interest is there, we can hold some night and weekend classes," said Henson. "We must have at least five people before we can start a night class." Night classes would be

scheduled according to the needs of the applicants, said Henson.

The class may run on a six-week schedule instead of the usual six-day sched- ule, Henson added.

"If they would come in and apply, I could sit down with them and work something out," Henson said. "We can be very flexible."

For information about any of the classes, call Henson at 257-7030.

JEC helps turn military expe- rience into college credits

LCpI. Barry Proctor Combat Correspondent

Marines and Sailors can turn their military experiences in to college credits at the Joint Education Center here every Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The JEC offers a free class on how

to fill out a DD295 application which can help save thousands of dollars by turning military corre- spondence courses and primary and secondary military occupational specialty training into college semester hours, said Cpl. Michael Whitt, a class instructor.

"Even if it gets you out of taking one class, it's worth it," said Whitt. "Why pay for the classes and books when you already have the train-

ing?" Spouses, retirees and all present or

former servicemem- bers are welcome to attend, Whitt said. Last year, this class saved $265,000 for those who took it. Active duty person- nel need to bring Page 8 of their ser- vice record book, according to Whitt. "Some MOS's don't provide as many

credits as others," said Whitt. "The more technical the job, the more credits you can get. On average, most people receive 15 to 20 cred- its."

Whitt

"It was very helpful and easy to understand," said Pvt. John Gordon, a ground radio repair technician with Maintenance Company, Combat Service Support Group 3. "It's also easier to get training through the military instead of col- lege professors."

Gordon uncovered 31 credits, including recruit training and three different schools for military train- ing for his field. "With these credits, you can pick a

degree and put together a degree plan with a college counselor," said Whitt. "They can help you pick out the classes you need to get a degree." For more information, call the JEC

at 257-2158.

Class offers budget relief

Budgeting class ideal for expecting par- ents.

LCpI. Barry Proctor Combat Correspondent

Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society offers a free "Budgeting For Baby" class to all service- members or family mem- bers here every fourth Monday from 9-11 a.m.

The class includes a briefing by a nurse from Tripler Army Hospital on what expecting parents need to do before the baby is born and a pre- sentation by a budget coun- selor on how to manage money with the new addition. "I served 22 years in the

military, so I know what young military families need," said Ed Josiah, a NMCRS budget coun- selor. "I like to bring my experiences to a class and share them."

The class goes over avoiding "traps" which may put families in financial distress, such as door-to-door salesmen and credit cards.

"I do lots of counseling for people who need it," said Josiah. "I work with 50 to 60 clients for finan- cial management. I see all the pitfalls most peo-

pie fall into and I try to keep people here from doing the same." Those who attend the

class will receive "Baby's First Seabag." Inside are hand-knitted blankets , a baby book and a package of clothes, receiving blankets and other items.

"The class teaches you how to budget and han- dle money," said Sabrina Cowger, a base resident who attended the class. "And the baby bag is also

a good reason to come." Another bud- geting service offered by NMCRS is a free budget analysis for residents here. All partici- pants need is a list of bills paid and a leave and earnings state- ment, accord-

ing to Josiah. "This is a service which

might cost up to $300 out in town, but you can do it free through Navy Relief," said Josiah.

"The session is very Marine-oriented because we know how to read a pay chart and a leave and earnings statement," said Karen Charney, a finan- cial case worker at NMCRS. "It's a great way to figure out where you stand financially."

To schedule an appoint- ment for "Budgeting For Baby" or a budget analy- sis, call NMCRS at 254- 1327.

Pros shine as AFC triumphs, 29-24

Digital photo by Cpl. Steven Williams

Jerome Bettis, a running back with Pittsburgh, drives throught the NFC line, living up to his nickname 'The Bus."

Moon scores in 4th quarter to put AFC on top in Pro Bowl

Cpl. Steven Williams Combat Correspondent

TEA, Hawaii - Seattle Seahawks 'quar-

terback Warren Moon snuck into the end zone late in the fourth quar- ter to rally the American Football Conference, 29-24, in the 28th annual Pro Bowl here.

Several stars shined in the all-pro line-ups, giving Hawaii a show for its money. The fans were on the edge of their seats down to the last seconds as the AFC mustered a come-from- behind drive after a National Football Conference fumble with only 2:19 left.

Tennessee Oilers run- ning back Eddie George brought the AFC within

a point of NFC with a four-yard scamper to make it 24-23 NFC and 2:31 to go.

But Bill Cowher the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, made a crucial poten- tially-game-deciding decision to go for two. Moon threw an off-the- mark quick toss to Oakland Raiders wide reciever Tim Brown .

However, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Chris Chandler, the last-second replace- ment for Green Bay Packer quarterback and National Football League Most Valuable Player Brett Favre, fumbled the first hand- off in the stay-alive drive. It was picked up by Seahawks defensive end Michael Sinclair to give possession back to

AFC for one last shot. Four carries by

George and a one-yard plunge by Moon later, AFC was on top to stay. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Trent Dilfer tried to bring the NFC back as the play clock ticked the game away, but was unsuc- cessful.

For his efforts in the game, the 41-year-old Moon was named Pro Bowl MVP, completing four of eight passes.

Other shooting stars were Terrell Davis, a Denver Broncos run- ning hack sporting a shiny new Super Bowl ring, who finished with 27 yards on six carries, and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young who con- nected on five of 11 passes for 103 yards.

Several National Football League play- ers, current and for-

mer, joined nearly 200 base youth on the grid iron at Pop Warner Field here to wage war on drugs.

Assisted by "No Hope In Dope," the Honolulu Police Department and the Military Police Department's 1997 intramural flag football champion team, Five -O, the players passed along their experiences with football and drug and alcohol use.

"It's fortunate for us that we can come out here and talk with the kids," said Greg Clark, a rookie tight end for the San Francisco 49ers. "Because of media and tele- vision, professional athletes are put in a unique position

where they can provide a positive role models for kids to follow."

"It's important to provide role models for children to give them a positive focus in life," said 49ers kicker Gary Anderson.

"We need to bring the future of this country a posi- tive outlook on life," said Gabe Rojas, a defensive back with Five-O. "By bringing Marines out here to provide role models along with the professional players, maybe the children will realize they don't have to look so far for positive role models. We're right here under their noses."

"It's tough trying to make it in this world today," said Gary Plummer, a 49ers line- backer. "What I stressed most out here, along with drug and alcohol rejection, was a good work ethic.

Without it, I wouldn't be where I am today."

"These youngsters go to sev- eral sources to find these examples for strength and guidance," said Clark. "A lot get it from their family, while many look to professional athletes. We have to watch what we do because we have a big problem with youth thinking alcohol or smoking is okay since we do it.

"And we have influence them not to follow others who do it and say its cool," the 25-year- old pro continued. "It's hard for them to say no, especially when everyone is doing it." The hour-and-a-half football

clinic probably didn't give the players enough time make any drug-free, soon-to-be football stars, but according to some of the pros, if only one took their words to heart, then the event was a success.

Ahhh, Superchicken

Recently, the Public Affairs office has added among its ranks a young corpo- ral who has an affinity

for Trans Ams. Actually, it's more like a raging love for the cars. The man is obviously nuts.

This is an affront to the Ford lovers in the shop. Three of our people owned various Mustangs when he arrived, and I claim alleigance to the almighty Probe GT. So naturally, with the shop being Firebird-less until he arrived, we tore into him like a pack of hye- nas on a wounded zebra.

"Hey, Guido, Fat 7bny wants you to bring him a pizza when you come back." I say. The corporal, not being from the northern industrial ("New Joisey," "New Yawk") area of the United States, didn't under- stand the implication of the joke until he was told about the image of the Firebird as a "Guido" car.

Still, our erstwhile Firebird lover gives it right back to us. He tells everyone our cracks about the Bird are nothing but symptoms of the dreaded "green-eyed monster" - jealousy. Whatever, "Bandit."

"Hey, Burt Reynolds called and said bring his car back," I say.

Green-eyed monster indeed. For us, it's more like red-faced laughter.

`Do you really have a replica of the toupee Burt Reynolds wore in Smoke), and the Bandit I and IT hanging on the wall in. your bar- racks?" I ask. "What about the hat?"

In the south, Trans Ams used to be the cars to have. Every high school senior wanted one, and the guys who drove them were the recipients of jealous stares from teens and gas jockeys all over Dixie. If you had asked me, when I was 13, what the greatest car ever made was, I'd have said "1977 Trans Am with the black/gold pack- age." Porsches? I thought they were ugly. Corvettes? Too curvy Camaros? Not as cool as Trans Ams. Mustangs? Let's face it - the Mustang II was one of the ugli- est cars Ford ever made.

"Did Sh.erriff Buford T Justice do funny things to you in jail? I ask.

But the Trans Am had the right combination of cojones for me. They were never sophisticated - just brashly styled, in-your-face musclecars. And to top it off was the screaming chicken on the hood.

Firebird lovers say "It's not a chicken, it's a ` firebird!'" But look in any book about birds, and you'll never see a "firebird." You'll see a chicken, but no firebird.

Of course, this ignores the great "phoenix" of mythology, but "phoenix" don't exist either, except as a city in Arizona which can't win any sports championships because they just don't pack the gear. So, the screaming, deadly looking apparition atop a Trans Am's hood is a marauding chicken.

This could have been a potentially disastrous point for the car, because who wants to ride around with a chicken painted on the hood of their otherwise sporty ride? But Pontiac, in its infinite wisdom, decided to make the chicken look cool.

Well, cool as a chicken can look. My favorite Trans Am of all time

is the 1979 Trans Am with the 6.6- liter engine, four on the floor and WS6 suspension. The epitome of disco cool, but a fast, decent-han- dling car for its time, anyway. Nowadays, the Trans Am thun-

ders with up to 320 horsepower - nearly double the amount of the Probe GT I so love - and has the meanest-looking front end of all cars. You can't help but be scared of it. That is, until you look closely and

see the chicken. Sing it with me: "Ahhhh, Super Chicken! Bock bock bock! Ahhhh, Super Chicken!

MCAF corrals Mustangs with tough defense, 43-39

LCpI. Trent Lowry Combat Correspondent

The Marine Corps Air Facility team roped the Combat Service Support Group-3 Mustangs, 43-39, Friday, in

the second game of an intramural hoops triple-header at the main gym here.

Defense was the name of the game as MCAF picked up their second win of the sea- son in this closely fought contest. The Mustangs dropped to 1-4.

"We need to pick up our defense if we're going to win games," said Mustangs coach Rick Baughman. Down 16-7 with five minutes left in the

first half, MCAF went on a 12-2 run to go up at half 21-18.

"We blocked out better, but we have to start hitting our shots," MCAF coach Michael Garton said at halftime. "Whichever team gets a scoring streak last is going to win. It'll be a close game until the end."

MCAF built a 15-point lead, 40-25, with 5:30 left in the game. It looked almost to be a mirror image of the first half, with the Mustangs putting a streak of their own together. They pulled to within four, but could get no closer.

"We played much better," said Garton, "

The more games we play together we gain cohesiveness. It's hard to get everyone together for practice, since we all have differ- ent schedules. To be able to field a compete-

Ruggers needed for Marine team J No experi- ence required for Marines, Sailors who want to play for newly formed K-Bay Ruggers.

CpI. M.V. Trindade Combat Correspondent

The newly formed Kaneohe Bay Rugby Football team is looking

for a few good men. All you need to bring is the

desire to endure one of the toughest games out there, said Paul Bruchman, the team's match secretary. Size is not a factor, no one will be cut, and despite the rough look of the sport, it's not all about being tough.

"The game is a gentlemen's sport," said Mike Evergin, a 10-year rugger. "During the game you hit as hard as you can, and afterwards the play- ers get together to socialize. There is no animosity, regardless of who won."

Rugby is very popular around the world and, unlike football, a player need not be in high school or college to continue playing the sport with an organized team.

"Football, for most players, ends after high school or col- lege," Evergin said, "but with rugby, there is potential to move up to the All Marine

team, to the Interservice team, all the way up to the National team." "Rugby is a physically and

mentally tough sport. It teaches unity of effort," said the MCB Hawaii founder Mike Brown. "It exposes the key elements of manuever warfare that are required of the Marine warrior."

There are only two military rugby teams on the island, MCB Hawaii and Schofield Barracks, but there are seven teams in the Hawaii Rugby Union. In addition, the team here is looking to start a women's program. Interested women are invited to contact any team member for details.

Practice is held every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Risley Field across from the base gym behind the bowling alley. For more information, call Brown at 257-1374.

`Wag the Dog' borders on brilliant Sgt. Michael T. Wiener

Combat Correspondent

Ifigured with names like Hoffman, De Niro and Harrelson, "Wag the Dog"

would be a decent movie. I was wrong - it was great.

A U.S. president has been accused of luring an underage "Firefly Girl" (much the same as a Girl Scout) into the Oval Office and presenting her with opportuni- ties no Firefly Girl could anticipate from the commander-in-chief.

The accusation is about to destroy his 17-point lead in elec- tion polls just weeks before elec- tion day.

Fortunately, presidential aide, Winifred Ames (Anne Heche) is

able to find spin doctor Conrad Brean (Robert De Niro) for an emergency session in the White House bunkers. Bream comes up with a remarkably strange idea to take the attention away from the Firefly Girl incident - he pro- duces a war. Brean flies to Hollywood and

enlists the help of Stanley Motss, a movie producer played by Dustin Hoffman. All of a sudden, the U. S. is involved in a conflict in Albania.

The media picks up on fake news footage of a young Albanian girl (Kirsten Dunst) fleeing from rapists, and Sgt. William Schumann (Woody Harrelson) is rescued from the hands of evil Albanians and given a hero's wel-

come. All of this to take the attention

away from the Firefly Girl. Did it work? Go see the movie.

Hoffman's performance was bril- liant - the best he's given in years in my opinion. His character com- bines intelligence with insecurity and insincerity, and he gets upset that his secret manipulations will go uncredited. De Niro plays off Hoffman perfectly. They make a great duo and are the reason the movie rocks. "Wag the Dog" is an outstanding

movie. I found myself laughing throughout and occasionally think- ing how odd it is that something like this could actually happen. Do yourself a favor - see the movie.
