09:19:54 PDT Question: Answer: Welcome Anish! Glad you're here!

09:21:45 PDT Question: Thanks.. Have tried out your blog Fail Over Clustering for File Servers using Windows Azure. Answer: Great! Thanks for following my blog at http://KeithMayer.com

09:23:21 PDT Question: Wow - can get ssh as well Answer: Yep - MAP supports discovery and analysis of Windows and Linux workloads / running on Hyper-V,

VMware or Physical servers.

09:27:03 PDT Question: I've used MAP to report on gaps on licensing on my premises, I have now an awesome full inventory of

every Microsoft software and is all on our Volume Licensing portal, great tool! Answer: Great to hear! MAP is awesome!

09:27:11 PDT Question: nice Bing plug! Answer: Thanks!

09:32:13 PDT Question: As the tool queries the targeted machines, if there is an antivirus software running on the remote machine,

can it interpret this inquiry as a virus? Answer: The tool is using standard authenticated management protocols such as WMI to perform the inspection, so

it's doesn't commonly generate anti-virus false alarms.

09:32:25 PDT Question: Looks ez 'nuff Answer: Great to hear! Thanks for your feedback!

09:38:44 PDT Question: Keith, relying on WMI can require that you need to open up the firewall on the devices to enable wmi or

am I incorrect in this Answer: Yes, but if you run MAP from a trusted internal subnet that monitoring tools typically run from, this can be

more easily managed because firewall rules are probably already in place.

09:43:54 PDT Question: How is Share point incorporated in Azzure? Answer: A few ways - SharePoint farms can be hosted on Azure IaaS for dev/test, staging and production - provides

ability to heavily customize SharePoint if needed. In addition, cloud-hosted SharePoint web apps can be built using Azure Web sites, cloud services or IaaS VMs and integrated with SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint Online.

09:45:56 PDT Question: In Azure, do we need to buy Windows License for VMs ? Answer: No, VMs built inside Azure come with licensing costs for the OS and in SQL's case the SQL licensing as

well, all built into the per minute billing rate. This hourly rate can also be changed(lessened) based on if you are applying MSDN licensing or SA licensing per your contract.

09:46:46 PDT Question: is it possible to run active directory in azure without having any on-premise domain controller? Answer: It's possible, but variables in latency and connectivity for Site-to-Site VPN connections over the public

Internet can be a consideration for keeping at least one domain controller "appliance" on-prem today. If using Express Route to connect to Azure virtual networks, it's much more reasonable. Keep in mind that in the future (with Windows 10), the ability to natively leverage Azure Active Directory for user authentication at client devices is being targeted, making this scenario much more realistic.

09:47:09 PDT Question: In Azure, do we need to buy Windows License for VMs or is it included in the price ? Answer: I answered this in your above question. Licensing comes with the per hour rate. Keep in mind you are only

billed by per minute use, but the hourly rate is what is displayed in the calculators for ease of calculation.

09:47:57 PDT Question: How do you handle a customer (Swedish customer) with Azure that cant have data stored outside of

Sweden? (Legal reasons) Answer: Great opportunity to investigate our Cloud OS network of hosting partners that integrate with Azure and

Azure Pack - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/cloud-os-network.aspx

09:48:20 PDT Question: jenelle certainly knows her stuff awesome...... Answer: Glad you like her! She is a tremendous teammate for the Microsoft team!

09:48:48 PDT Question: We going by Mantra don't move to cloud for purpose of cloud but where it makes sense from a business

standpoint to drive utility and functionality. Answer: Yes - great Hybrid Cloud approach!

09:49:36 PDT Question: Hi does anyone know do we have "Desktop as a Service" in Azure? Answer: Be sure to check out Azure Remote App - that may be a great solution for your scenario

09:51:12 PDT Question: I'm also seeing organizations that are moving to IaaS structure but don't necessarily have Enterprise

(redundant) MPLS or Internet connectivity. Answer: Could be OK for ancillary roles, dev/test or DR, but certainly good to have reliable connectivity for core

roles.

09:51:43 PDT Question: Thanks, for answer, just add questions, we use O365 and capabilities of SP, so the questions is: How you

can compare for end user diffrencies for use SP(Share Pooint) from Azzure (by te way I'm a fan ou use SP in O 365, so how I can see VAD in Azzure?) Answer: Basically the SharePoint you would deploy in your own Azure VMs may give you a bit more flexibility as well

as ease of providing dev/test scenarios for new features and functionality you would like to roll out. Seeing as you own the entire SP installation, DB, and OS as your administrative responsibility in the Virtual Machines, you can customize until your heart's content. The SP in O365 is top notch, no doubts there!

09:52:16 PDT Question: I was really hoping they would throw that server out the window...

Answer: Or to the middle of a field Office Space style

09:52:26 PDT Question: Do you have any reference material for government compliance? Answer: Yes - check out the Azure trust center as your first stop for compliance, security and privacy details

09:53:22 PDT Question: The VMs we create in Azure are actually deployed in Hyper-V hosts ? Is this the reason why you cannot

use Hyper-V feature in cloud ? Answer: Correct, there is no need to deploy Hyper-V hosts, we've done that for you with award winning support,

architecture, and testing unmatched around the world. Choose your datacenter geo and start building virtual machines, rest assured we've got the back end taken care of.

09:53:59 PDT Question: yah I saw that but it has only apps that can be hosted.. basically I am wondering whether we can host

Client OS i.e Win 7/8 etc in Azure VM's? Answer: Only for dev/test scenarios as part of an MSDN Azure subscription today. Alternatively, you can also host

an RDSH server farm in Azure at a much lower cost that client-based VDI - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn451351.aspx

09:55:42 PDT Question: with RDS in the cloud where is the tie back to user storage? On-Prem or Azure? If cloud how is that

captured from a HR and an IT perspective if user leaves Answer: Could be on Azure on a Windows File Server VM, on-prem or in O365. All three locations can be governed

by IT policies.

09:56:04 PDT Question: Does Microsoft plan to impalement TFS 2013 online integration with Project Server 2013 online ? Answer: Sorry that would be a futures type question, and we are not allowed to comment on those. You would need

to ask your MSFT rep for an NDA roadmap to see where things are headed.

09:56:45 PDT Question: So each VM i create will function similarly as VMs in a hyperv-host ? Answer: Yes - Azure uses the Hyper-V core as the underlying compute hypervisor. VHD hard disks are compatible

between on-prem Hyper-V and Azure for bi-directional portability.

09:58:17 PDT Question: the MigrateADLab link seems incorrect Answer: Try this link instead for the Migrate AD Lab

10:01:31 PDT Question: We already have a mostly virtualized server environment here at my company, but we use VMware for

this purpose. How can we continue to utilize VMware with tools such as Azzure? We have Office 365 for Exchange and SharePoint, but we use the virtualized servers set up on physical boxes here for things like the domain controller/Active Directory role, the file/print server role, and the app server role. In our virtualized environment, we also have a Linux Web server. Sitting outside of the virtual environment are a couple of AS400s. Answer: Even if using VMware on-prem, can still use Azure as a cloud extension of your datacenter for new

workloads and manage as hybrid cloud via System Center. To migrate workloads from VMware to Azure, check out the new Migration Accelerator tool at http://blogs.technet.com/b/keithmayer/archive/2014/09/11/modernizing-your-infrastructure-with-hybrid-cloud-migrating-vmware-amp-amazon-aws-to-microsoft-azure-with-microsoft-migration-accelerator-part-20.aspx. Azure can also support Linux workloads as Azure VMs. System Center Operations Manager can monitor Windows, Linux, O365 and AS/400 for unified monitoring and alerting.

10:05:11 PDT Question: Can you save your Server Manager custom groups? Answer: Yep - sure can! It's saved in ServerList.xml under your AppData \ Roaming folder in your user profile.

10:05:57 PDT Question: Why do you have a "Register DNS server" option in Azure ? Answer: That's provided to tell VM's on a virtual network which DNS server they should query.

10:07:13 PDT Question: any idea when the newest server OS will be released Answer: Hi David! Unfortunately, at this event, we're unable to comment on product futures that have not yet been

publicly announced.

10:07:46 PDT Question: Why cant AD DNS be used for that purpose ? Answer: Prior to a VM joining a domain, it still needs to know which DNS server to query to find a domain controller.

10:07:47 PDT Question: Hi I wanna know how to add the MVA 50 point to my account Answer: See the FAQ for code and instructions

10:09:01 PDT Question: Keith...I have 2 2012-R2 Hyper-V hosts. I am wanting to put them into 2 different cities. I do not have

shared storage. What would be the best way to have 2 live data centers running at the same time for load balancing and for DR fail over? I have 15 sites in a hub and spoke VPN network... Answer: I'd recommend taking a look at Hyper-V Replica - it's included with Hyper-V in 2012 and 2012 R2. In 2012

R2 it can replicate running VMs as quickly as every 30 seconds to the other site - depending on available bandwidth, of course.

10:13:36 PDT Question: Thanks Tommy, I'll Will test Azzure, just questions Microsoft is from USA,why is for registratinos to Azzure

nededed just Visa and Master Cards, my Company card is AMEX, so I have postponed activations? Answer: AMEX is allowed within the US now, are you outside the US? If so, I don't have any information at this time

to allow for AMEX outside the US sorry.

10:13:52 PDT Question: Thanks Tommy, just questions why, reegistrations for Azzure is possible just from Visa and Master Card? Answer: answered previous question just now

10:14:00 PDT Question: Keith...from what I have read the Replica is not meant for live DR fail over...From your understanding,

would this meet my requirements? Answer: Hyper-V Replica is an active / passive solution. In the event of a disaster, you can failover and bring the

replicated VM up on the Hyper-V host at the other site. It's intended for DR replication and failover between sites. However it is asynchronous, so for unplanned disasters, there is a small window (based on replication interval and network bandwidth) of pending data transactions being lost. If looking for a synchronous solution, currently that would be a stretch cluster using synchronous storage replication via a 3rd party storage appliance solution, which is much more expensive and not practical over VPN connections due to high latencies.

10:15:14 PDT Question: If my VM in Azure is shut down, will it not be getting the same IP again ? Will it be assigned for any other

servers ? Answer: If you use the new preview portal or powershell to create VMs in Azure you can assign an IP address to

VMs. The current GA portal does not have this feature. If you use the GA portal then anytime a VM goes to deprovisioned you risk the IP changing.

10:16:00 PDT Question: How can I activate the DNS module in this powershell to use a cmdlet like Get-DnsSever? Answer: You'll need to install the Remote Server Admin Tools feature using the Add Roles and Features wizard -

specifically the DNS Server management tools

10:16:57 PDT Question: What version of PowerShell is it using? Answer: PowerShell v4.0 is included with Windows Server 2012 R2. Note that v5.0 is currently in Preview and

available as a free download from the Download Center.

10:19:55 PDT Question: Keith...Thank you...Is there a way to calculate, based on how many VM's, sizes...bandwidth, how long it

will take if I shut off data center 1 for employees to be up and working on data center 2? Answer: There's many variables, including your site-to-site connectivity, so the best way is to calculate the required

bandwidth for replication to take place efficiently using this toolhttp://blogs.technet.com/b/keithmayer/archive/2014/02/27/guided-hands-on-lab-capacity-planner-for-windows-server-2012-hyper-v-replica.aspx, set it up as a poc, and then use the Test Failover capability of Hyper-V Replica to estimate failover times.

10:21:33 PDT Question: How do i convert a full gui server to a minShell server? Answer: Just go into the Remove Features wizard and uncheck the boxes for GUI and MGMT Tools as you see fit,

then reboot the host when prompted.

10:22:36 PDT Question: Can you help me for betterr undertending the capabilities and diferencies for SharePoint in O365 and

Azzure, (I reelly wants to use SP as best as possible) Answer: Take a look at this page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/sharepoint-online-service-

description.aspx If you need SharePoint features that Office 365 doesn't currently support, you can implement a SharePoint Farm on Azure IaaS instead of O365. Aside from that, when using O365, some orgs still leverage SharePoint on Azure for dev/test farm environments for building custom apps, and then deploy those apps to their O365 deployment using Azure Web Sites or Cloud Services when ready to move them to production.

10:23:09 PDT Question: > Quoted question: Keith...Thank you...Is there a way to calculate, based on how many VM's, sizes...bandwidth, how long it will take if I shut off data center 1 for employees to be up and working on data center 2? > Quoted answer: There's many variables, including your site-to-site connectivity, so the best way is to calculate the required bandwidth for replication to take place efficiently using this toolhttp://blogs.technet.com/b/keithmayer/archive/2014/02/27/guided-hands-on-lab-capacity-planner-for-windows-server-2012-hyper-v-replica.aspx, set it up as a poc, and then use the Test Failover capability of Hyper-V Replica to estimate failover times. 10:23:52 PDT Question: Will these slides be made available? Answer: The slides are currently available when you click on the FAQ tab

10:24:27 PDT Question: If I install Exchange in a VM, is there chances that my domain can get blacklisted ? I heard that Azure now

supports Reverse DNS. So its safe to use Exchange ? Answer: Exchange is not currently supported on Azure IaaS VMs - Office 365 Exchange Online provides a much

more cost-effective model for cloud-based Exchange. If you need to use other mail-enabled applications from Azure, you could use SendGrid as an option, which is available as an Azure plug-in - less expensive than running an SMTP server VM.

10:24:49 PDT Question: tomorrow will be a MVA live event about powershell and Active Directory! Answer: Correct: http://www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com/liveevents/using-powershell-for-active-directory

10:25:42 PDT Question: Is there something similar to Exchange 2013's Preferred Architecture for Hyper-V as a private cloud? Answer: That's provided via the Azure Pack deployment guidance available at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-

us/library/dn457767.aspx

10:26:11 PDT Question: is compulsory restart the server for the change between minshell and full gui? Answer: Yes, a server restart during a brief maintenance window is required to effect this change.

10:28:34 PDT Question: What is Azure Backup ? Answer: Azure Backup provides a plugin for Windows Server to allow for backing up directly to an Azure Storage

container. This is certificate based for encryption and security. The plugin goes directly into the Windows Backup feature on the server.

10:31:32 PDT Question: Do we need an Azure subscription for this ? Set up VMs in cloud etc.. ? Answer: For Azure Backup? Yes - all Azure services require an active Azure subscription. However, Azure Backup

does not require VMs in Azure, as it can backup both on-prem as well as cloud VMs to the Azure Backup Vault.

10:33:04 PDT Question: Tommy, when you use the Azure backup plugin for onprem servers. Is it possible to spinup the server on

azure in a few clicks or does it still require a restore (kind of standby DR) Answer: You would stand up a VM in Azure then install the plugin and restore the config and data. If you are using

Hyper-V you might want to look at Azure Site Recovery, replication of virtual machines to Azure with failover automation and all the bells and whistles for DR plans.

10:33:28 PDT Question: Script Browser and Analyzer http://www.microsoft.com/en- us/download/details.aspx?id=42525 Answer: Love this tool!

10:33:36 PDT Question: What are the bandwidth requirements for Azure Backup, say I want to backup large SQL databases (TB),

can I do that or there are limits/charges? Thanks! Answer: You can do that, as Azure Backup uses compressed delta backups after the initial full backup is completed.

10:34:01 PDT Question: Corrct link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42525 Answer: Thanks!

10:36:11 PDT Question: windows feature is active fro DNS remote Tools, But I still cannot get the cmdlet Get-DNSServer to work

of PowerShell., Do I need to import-module specifically? Answer: Are you running Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2? If so, it should auto-import modules if they are installed

in your PS module path. You can try running import-module DnsServer to see if that helps.

10:37:07 PDT Question: Thanks Tommy, I need to check all what is in that descriptions on recomanded web pages (there is a lot of

things), but with simple thing and questions: As I wants in Company with 500 employee to migrate from O365 to Azzure what explanation can I use to CEO and form me to us that? Answer: You are speaking of just migrating SharePoint I assume. The question is a little hard to read for me, but I

will give it a shot. You would basically talk through the dev/test/prod life cycle, the benefits that custom instances would give your company and its employees over what you get today in o365, and also talk through the estimated costs(per the calculator perhaps). Hard to answer this question with simple Q/A answer though Im afaid.

10:38:02 PDT Question: For Azure Backup - Is there a way to bulk "seed" the initial full backup or does the first full backup have to

replicate over the internet? Answer: The initial backup is done over the network.

10:39:25 PDT Question: Is it possible to show a sign in the videoscreen when there is a new poll? Because i prefer to watch the

stream fullscreen and i might miss a poll. Answer: Great suggestion, although for today we are not ready to implement that. What I would do is use the break

times to check for the poll then switch back to full screen perhaps. Again, great idea!

10:40:39 PDT Question: We have 3 clients using azure backup now... and seeding was fast for 1-2tb and dailys are faster than

onsite system Answer: Great, glad to hear it! I guess the answer depends on the site's bandwidth speed of course, but yes the

daily's are quite quick unless you have a ton of data change per day.

10:44:14 PDT Question: Just awaiting link for TechNet Lab Matt just mentioned... Answer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/virtuallabs/bb467605.aspx

10:45:40 PDT Question: Is Azure Backup generally available? (e.g. : Brazil) Answer: Yes, and recently just extended support for non-R2 2008 instances as well.

10:46:21 PDT Question: Thanks Tommy the same is for me somehow I think that Azzure can give me the better way, but I'm in

stage to migare each week in O365 for 20 new users, so I have aslo difficulities to go ahead (no doubt I wiil stay with SP and other capabilities wihich come from MS cloud directinon on Cloud.. SP..), regards and thanks, Milan Answer: Good luck and great to see you challenging the norm, asking questions, and thinking outside the box!

10:48:11 PDT Question: I gotta agree that DSC is a really awesome feature, but this example actually shows that you have to

program alot of intelligence to Ensure even a simple website still works. Think of the css, html, aspx files. Also i'm missing content validation. Now it's just: Is it there or not. Answer: Content validation can be performed during build/test and then DSC used to ensure that all of the built &

validated files are distributed to the app servers. If you wish to have DSC perform this, it's certainly possible to do so with a custom DSC module for the app.

10:49:05 PDT Question: Is the option available in Azure yet to do an initial seed by shipping HDDs to Microsoft? I do recollect that

being mentioned as an option if you need to send huge quantities of data into Azure. Answer: Yes it is possible to send hard drives to Azure and allow for importing VHDs directly into your storage

account. You will need to open a request for this and follow the guidelines.

10:49:21 PDT Question: Thanks Tommy, these are great news! Answer: Glad to hear I could help!

10:49:53 PDT Question: ... about better understanding when there's a new poll I'd also like to suggest to possibly also provide a

very short sound (i.e. like an exploding soap ball pop one) to also refocus people attention (sometime I'm also busy saving chat link URLs...) :-D Answer: another great suggestion, I am posting it to the internal team for follow up on the ideas.

10:51:35 PDT Question: DSC took a lot of time to configure for our HPV 12R2 systems but in the end I'm assured that the

configurations are consistent and applied. Answer: Correct, and compliancy checklists are so much easier once you've taken the time to get the configs

perfected.

here: http://www.virtuallycloud9.com/index.php/2013/02/migrating-hyper-v-virtual-machines-from-server-2008r2-to-server-2012-part-10-of-the-migration-and-deployment-series/

11:02:11 PDT Question: I can see it installed on Windows Server 2012 r2 when I run Get-Module -listavailable but in Windows

Server 2008 r2 how do I install the module for DNSClient or DNS Server? Answer: The DNSServer module is a new module included with 2012 and later. It's not present on older OS

releases.

11:07:48 PDT Question: In azure the default subscription limit is 20 cores aside from couple more limits. We are noticing that we

are frequently going to hit against this limits. To prevent multiple subscriptions, it would be great if these limits get pushed up. Or that it is made easy to raise these limits. I would not know how to get the limits raised/removed. Answer: Yep - just open an Azure billing support ticket through the portal and request for a core increase in your

subscription.

11:08:57 PDT Question: Is a Gen 2 VM faster than Gen 1 with same host hardware? Answer: Some aspects are faster - for example, Gen2 uses virtual SCSI OS disks, so boot times are much faster.

11:11:07 PDT Question: Just an insight, if you need to use COM ports for any reason, the Generation 1 VHD will be you option. Answer: With Gen2 VMs, you can use an IP serial port concentrator for serial connectivity if it's widely needed. If it's

just a special case for 1 VM, using Gen1 as you suggest would be an alternative.

11:14:00 PDT Question: Couldn't it be that maybe to be able to use Get-DNSServer you have to upgrade PowerShell 2.0 to

PowerShell 3.0 ? Answer: No - The DNSServer module is specific to Windows Server 2012 and later because it involves server-side

changes as well. In Windows Server 2008 R2, you can manage DNS with PowerShell using WMI - seehttp://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2010/09/13/manage-dns-in-a-windows-environment-by-using-powershell.aspx

11:15:14 PDT Question: can you migrate Gen2 from onpremise to Azure? I "heard" you need to use VHDs? Answer: Yes, you'd migrate VMs to Azure as fixed-size VHDs and then provisioning a VM config on Azure that

references those VHDs. Can automate the process via PowerShell.

11:15:26 PDT Question: ... about my previous suggestion to add a short sound when a new poll get available, I'm now also

considering that it might be much easier to implement than embedding something inside video stream. Apart considering that poll awareness during a video replay is not really useful,, current polls just 'seem' to be HTML based and thus also adding some HTML code for playing a short sound should just be easier... Answer: Agree and relayed the suggestions thanks!

11:23:25 PDT Question: So does Server 2008 R2 run in a Gen 2 VM? Answer: Gen 2 VM's require Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012 or later as the guest OS.

11:25:58 PDT Question: word of advise, use VLan with caution, because will add data to headers thus overhead on the network

traffic, just be aware of the bandwidth usage Answer: Good points to consider, to be sure - as well as making sure that your entire infrastructure is VLAN aware to

properly handle end-to-end.

11:27:01 PDT Question: [Q] Can I (on Hyper-V 2012 R2) add/remove online memory od processors without turning off the virtual

machine? Answer: You can dynamically adjust memory and CPU resources, which is actually better than hot-add memory and

cores, because you can adjust up and down - using Dynamic Memory and % Processor Resource allocations.

11:29:22 PDT Question: whats a better way to handle than a VLAN? Answer: VLANs and HNV Network Virtualization are alternate approaches to traffic isolation and segmentation. HNV

has the added benefit of implementing isolation without requiring changes to underlying physical hardware, and can stretch more easily across multiple sites.

11:29:24 PDT Question: How do you select all that apply? The vote received moves from each selection. Does it capture them all? Answer: Choose the best answer, poll was written incorrectly.

11:29:41 PDT Question: You still cannot select all that apply in the questionnaire Answer: Select the best answer, poll wording was incorrect.

11:30:23 PDT Question: Ah Duke Nukem. A must have mission critical app in all enterprises. Answer: Now if we could provide drivers for DOS machines in Integration Tools that would be cool, so I could use

the keyboard and fight bad guys.

11:35:20 PDT Question: Is it needed to connect a JBOD to both SOFS Nodes or could SOFS Node are deployed in different

Server Rooms Answer: A single set of JBODs would be connected to each server supporting the same file shares, but you can

build an asymmetrical cluster that scales to multiple file shares being handled by different groups of servers within the same cluster.

11:36:39 PDT Question: so for storage spaces could I take an old server with 8 SAS disks and a slow proc and make it into a

SAN? Answer: You could, but if it's a really slow server, it may end up being a really slow SAN alternative. Better to

consider as part of your new server deployments - storage performance and availability is a critical component of most networks, and reusing old servers for that area generally isn't recommended.

11:37:12 PDT Question: What is an asymmetrical Cluster ? Answer: A Scale-Out File Server cluster where all servers are not sharing out that same file shares.

11:38:55 PDT Question: So SAS is the only option when it comes to clustered file server? Answer: If you want to use Storage Spaces in a cluster, it must be SAS disks due to the reservation features that

SAS has. However, Scale-Out File Servers don't necessarily require Storage Spaces - they can use traditional SAN storage behind them, such as iSCSI or Fiber Channel. Any storage that can be used as a Cluster Shared Volume.

11:46:13 PDT Question: Thanks Keith. Any links to HNV info? Answer: Sure thing - check this link out for HNV

You bear the risk of using it. Microsoft makes no warranties, express or implied, as to the information.

11:48:16 PDT Question: Well Keith should this called Cluster ? Why ? Answer: In a symmetric cluster, all servers are presenting the same resources, in an asymmetric cluster, the servers

are grouped into "pools" where one group of servers normally presents one set of resources and another group of servers normally presents other resources. In the event of a failure, these resources can still failover between servers.

12:12:11 PDT Question: Hello Keith, just a last question about asymmetric cluster, with resouce pools you cannot use Storage

Spaces unless the JBOD's are connected to all nodes witch can access the group resources. Or you have to use SAN resource to switch this Groups to a different cluster node. Is this right ? Answer: Well - if a failure within a cluster affects just the client-facing network(s), the cluster may still be able to

redirect IO from a separate server. Otherwise, yes - for storage to failover from one server to another using Storage Spaces, the servers need to be attached to common JBODs.

13:13:39 PDT Question: It is not classic - it is the current! The other is the preview portal!

Answer: Tomato, tomato. Azure is progressing as rapidly in months as modern IT did in years, so if it happened

last year it's "Classic" right?

13:15:02 PDT Question: For these huge MS data centers....What platform or software do most of the technicians use to do their

job? Are they using the Azure dashboard or Hyper-V dashboard? Answer: Customized system center implementation, watch the video they referenced, it shows a command center

view at some point in the video. Pretty impressive.

13:16:26 PDT Question: but sometimes classic stuff soak back in - start menu Answer: Yep yep! Or virtualization (mainframe>x86)

13:19:45 PDT Question: Tommy...so if I wanted to have Azure in the cloud to manage 2 separate data centers, do I need to have

System Center installed at both sites, or would the Azure IaaS take the place of SC? Answer: If you installed SC in an Azure VM and provided proper network connectivity to both data centers then you

would be able to manage both. IAAS just provides the Hyper-V host for rolling out virtual machines in the cloud as opposed to on-premise hypervisors. I'm not sure I answered your question just now after rereading it. Are you referring to Azure Site Recovery perhaps?

13:23:02 PDT Question: It is just another layer of potential bugs and comparability to work through... Answer: Site Recovery requires both sites to be managed by VMM so yes. However now that you can replicate VMs

to Azure, you might want to rethink the strategy long term to cut down on hardware sitting idle for replication purposes only. Less to manage long term.

13:23:27 PDT Question: [Q] Ok, Keith, thank You for answer my question. Refine, when I add one virtual processor to my VM, I

won`t be able to add two or more virtual processors to my VM without switch it off? Answer: Yes, true. But if you start with 2 virtual CPUs and set processor resources to 50%, your VM will have the

equivalent of a single core and then you can increase and decrease % up to the maximum # of cores assigned.

13:25:15 PDT Question: how do clients connect to Azure VMS? Is it an encrypted VPN tunnel? Answer: You can connect with a VPN tunnel, or directly via public firewall endpoints.

13:26:16 PDT Question: The question was posed earlier, what are your technicians using? Azure dashboard or Hyper-V

dashboard? Maybe I missed the answer. Answer: From a management perspective, System Center is the single set of dashboards that manage the hybrid

cloud - Azure + on-prem Hyper-V.

13:28:56 PDT Question: So i heard Multi nics are coming for VM's and that it would become available today. Answer: Yes, Multi-NICs for Azure VMs was announced today at TechEd Europe.

13:30:00 PDT Question: do you have a link that documents a best practice for a company to setup a VPN from on-premise to an

Azure network? Answer: Azure provides a cloudapp.net DNS public zone for Azure VMs and Cloud Services and provides Reverse

DNS support. If you'd like to host a custom DNS domain name, this could be done via a third party service such as dnsazure.com

13:31:17 PDT Question: Can multiple Azure Subscriptions be connected to mutliple "CLOUDS" in System Center 2012 R2? When

you create Hybrids. Answer: Each Azure Subscription connected to System Center 2012 R2 is represented as an individual cloud. All of

the clouds can be centrally managed via a single System Center installation.

13:31:35 PDT Question: Keith...can you sync 2 System Center VM's in different data centers? Answer: Via Hyper-V Replica, yes.

13:33:15 PDT Question: Do you have a link to how to setup Azure and SC? Answer: Yep - take a look at http://aka.ms/BuildYourCloud and for Azure Pack on-prem this

link http://blogs.technet.com/b/keithmayer/archive/2014/09/16/step-by-step-getting-started-with-windows-azure-pack-for-vm-private-clouds.aspx

13:35:53 PDT Question: Keith: Do you know if this will be generally available or do you need to sign up for a preview for Multi-

NIC's? Will it be available using powershell, old and/or new portal? Answer: It's configured through PowerShell today. Here's the details - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-

us/library/dn848315.aspx

13:37:11 PDT Question: Yes I know it can be managed centrally in System center 2012 R2 but can you add lets say 10 different

Azure Subscriptions to 10 local clouds (in System Center) Answer: Each Azure subscription would be an individual cloud. Each on-prem private cloud would be a cloud.

Clouds are defined as pools of compute, network and storage resources with internal high-speed connectivity.

13:38:35 PDT Question: is expressroute available in every country ? Answer: See this chart for Azure datacenter region availability of all services - http://azure.microsoft.com/en-

us/regions/#services

13:38:51 PDT Question: Is there a Azure DNS service, which we can use? Answer: See prior response to your question above.

13:42:38 PDT Question: Keith, i dislike that for many changes you would like to make to a VM, that you are forced to redeploy the

machine... For example, adding a NIC should not be a reason for a VM deployment, to be redeployed. Answer: Thanks for your feedback! I'll pass it along. You can share feedback directly with the Azure team for new

features and change requests at feedback.azure.com.

13:44:17 PDT Question: What do you have to do with a group of machines on the same virtual network to display a list of the

server names in Windows explorer under the network tab when you do a RDP connection to one of the Azure servers? I can access the other servers using back slash back slash servername but they do not list under the network node? Answer: Sounds like it may be a Windows Firewall policy - by defaut, File and Print Sharing are blocked when

deploying Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs from the standard platform images.

13:46:36 PDT Question: Keith, what if we setup VMs in Datacenter East with replication to West. There is an expressroute in place

to East. Will we need to add a second expressroute to West in case of a failover or will the expressroute be dynamic and failover to West when needed and only 1 is charged Answer: ExpressRoute provides redundancy in network connectivity to a single Azure datacenter, but does not

automatically failover to other datacenters itself. You may wish to check with your specific ExpressRoute circuit provider, as they may have options to address this when they hand-off the circuit to your site/equipment.

14:08:12 PDT Question: Will these migration tools work for 2003 R2 Terminal Servers to migrate to 2012 R2 RDP servers? Answer: There's been significant changes to the architecture of Terminal Services in 2003 vs Remote Desktop

Services in 2008 R2/2012/R2. The migration tools will migrate 2008 -> 2012, but not from 2003.

14:09:54 PDT Question: I don't feel like opening goo... bing, haha. Answer: bing, say it with me bing. Doesn't track you and doesn't provide advertising based on your web search or

purchase confirmations in email. Bing. lol

14:10:45 PDT Question: Link Please Answer: Link for what, sorry this doesn't show me when the comment came into the queue...

14:11:20 PDT Question: Can I use the server migration tool to migrate a 2003(x32) AD server to 2012R2(x64)? Answer: For AD migration, the recommended process is to introduce new 2012 R2 domain controllers, move FSMO

roles, and then demote old domain controllers. Note that when introducing new 2012 R2 domain controllers into a 2003 based environment, you'll want to also apply this patch (http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2989971/en-us)before promoting new domain controllers.

14:14:38 PDT Question: Keith...Advice for the 2k3 to 12R2 TS/RDP conversion? Answer: Keith can chime in as well, but in my consulting I don't recommend any type of automatic migration of 2k3

terminal servers as the tech has changed so much. Instead I profile the machines, say with the MAP tool, look to see what is still critical and necessary for redeployment and then devise a plan to make an image that includes the apps and data identified. The deployment of RDS in 2012 is pretty simple with the wizards provided so its quicker to manually implement RDS than try to migrate servers that are possible 12 years old. Hope this makes sense.

14:15:44 PDT Question: Link for the "Migrate Roles and Features to Windows Server 2012" @ Tommy Patterson. Agree, that's

why i don't use Chrome, Gmail or stuff like that. Still it's the best search engine and maybe some day bing will get there. Answer: Yeah, there are a few times in the year when I find myself hitting Google to get different search results, but

that has really shrank in the past 18 months.

14:16:32 PDT Question: Can the cost tool, connect to a hyper-v host and scan all guests? or do you add all the vm's one by one? Answer: It will enumerate and scan the VMs

14:17:02 PDT Question: So the Migration Accelerator for Azure also works to migrate workloads from AWS/Google to Azure and

vice versa? Answer: From Physical servers, Hyper-V VMs, VMware VMs or AWS VMs -> to Azure VMs

14:17:22 PDT Question: can the migration tool migrate a server to another trusted domain? Answer: The target server must be in the target domain. Some of the tools work to pull in config and data(like DHCP

for instance) from a different domain so long as the network connectivity is there.

14:17:48 PDT Question: Thanks Matt, Jenelle (lovely) and all Others (staff included) for sharing all this great content !! Answer: Spread the word on MVA! Thanks!

14:18:34 PDT Question: Keith, thank you for the reply regarding 2003AD to 2012! Answer: Sure thing! Thanks for joining today!

14:18:55 PDT Question: Keith: So it is not possible to use this tool to migrate back to on-premise in the event of changed

objectives that requires a different strategy? Answer: Azure VMs are portable, so they can be easily moved back to on-prem Hyper-V hosts.

14:21:12 PDT Question: Tommy...all I want to do is keep the printer and mapped drives from each of my 300 + TS sessions in a

new 12 R2 session...I have the apps and file servers in separate VM's Answer: Well this should be easy enough with registry exports so long as the printers exist by the same name in

2012. Mapped drives I would have to research though. I like the new UPDs in 2012 for user data as well, its pretty slick and with storage tiering can be lightening fast.

14:22:20 PDT Question: So it is also possible to (live) migrate an Azure VM to Hyper-V 2012R2? Answer: No this would be an offline move at this time.
