Can you afford to be without the mostcomprehensive clinical reference?

Oxford Textbook ofClinical NephrologyK th

JL Vrel

ENAL SPECIALISTS all over the world have already establishedthe Oxford Textbook of CImical Nephrology as the definitive

ference in clinical nephrology.

The Oxford Textbook of Clinical Nephrology is edited by five leadingEuropean authorities and contains outstanding contributions frominternationally renowned experts in the field. Each has drawn on avast experience of clinical practice to produce a comprehensiveguide to every aspect of renal disease.

Throughout the three volumes emphasis is placed on the clinicalaspects of nephrology and ultimately the needs of the renal patient. The text adopts an integrated approach to renal disease, incorporating the important contributions to the subject from otherspecialities such as immunology, genetics, and molecular biology.Full coverage is given to the biological basis of the latest diagnosticand therapeutic tools.

The Oxford Textbook of Clinical Nephrology also contains some uniquefeatures. It deals with many of the rarer renal problems and renalmanifestations of systemic disease that are not dealt with in othertexts - as a glance at the index will show. Paediatric nephrologyhas been blended into the text throughout and several chapters dealwith the special problems faced by the growing number of elderlypatients with renal disease. The authors have taken a globalapproach and take care to highlight the different problems causedby renal disease in the tropics. Special attention is paid to thehandling of drugs by the kidney and the effects of drugs on thekidney and renal tract. The final section provides a unique guide toclinical nephrology for other specialist physicians such asgastroenterologists. rheumatologists. and neurologists.

Mycotoxins, Nephropathyand Urinary Tract Tumours

Edited by M. Castegnaro, R. Plestina, G. Dirheimer,I. Chernozemsky, and H. Bartsch

This volume contains the Proceedings of an international meeting on"Mycotoxins, Endemic Nephropathy and Urinary Tract Tumours" held at

I ARC, Lyon. The 49 articles reflect current interest in the role of mycotoxins(known to be nephrotoxic to several animal species) in human diseases such asendemic nephropathy and urinary tract tumours prevalent in the Balkans and

other countries. The aetiology of these diseases has long been obscure, butnephrotoxic mycotoxins, such as ochratoxin A, (OA) have recently emerged as

key factors. Ochratoxins are produced by several Aspergillus and Penicilliumspecies, OA being the most potent known animal nephrotoxin, producing

kidney and liver tumours in two rodent species. Regulatory limits for the levelsof OA in selected foods and feed have been set by several countries.

New data on environmental occurence and human biomonitoring using newanalytical methods are reviewed in this volume. An increasing body of data

suggests that mycotoxin exposure is associated with nephropathy of people inthe Balkan region where exposure may be endemic. The toxic effects of OA are

described, including suppression of natural killer cells, inhibition of specificenzymes and induction of lipid peroxidation, adverse effects are also dealt with

in this volume. Other contributions deal with the roles of genetics and drugmetabolism in the nephrotoxic and carcinogenic effects.

Molecular Geneticsfrom

O X F O R DD Human MolecularGenetics

Edited from Oxford and Stanfordby Kay Davies and Huntington FWillard, this major new journalpublishes the best original researchon all aspects of human moleculargenetics, within a maximum ofthree months from receipt ofmanuscript.

Areas of interest include theanalysis of the structure andfunction of human genes, themolecular basis of human inheriteddisease and disease predisposition, chromosome structure andfunction, developmental genetics, molecular aspects of cancergenetics and genetic therapies. Themolecular analysis of other speciesis also of interest where suchstudies are relevant to the under-standing of the human genome.Vol. 2.1993,12 issues

Nucleic AcidsResearch

Nucleic Acids Research is theleading rapid publication journalfor papers on physical, chemicaland biological aspects of nucleicacids, their constituents and theproteins with which they interact.Only a fraction of the paperssubmitted meet the criteria foracceptance: papers have to besignificant, timely and original.Full length papers cover molecularbiology, enzymology, chemistryand genome structure andmapping.

Regular features include: For theRecord - useful data which is notappropriate as a full paper.Sequence Update - recent databaseentries available on the EMBL FileServer. Surveys and Summaries -brief reviews which bring togethermaterial not often found in aformal review article.Vol. 21,1993,24 issues + 1 supplement

ProteinEngineering

Protein Engineering is now theworld's leading original researchjournal devoted to this importantand fast-moving area of biochemi-cal research. It publishes paperswhich investigate how particularstructural features in proteins relateto the mechanisms through whichtheir biological function is ex-pressed, and tests these relation-ships empirically by introducingspecific changes and then evaluat-ing any altered structural or func-tional properties.

Specialised areas covered includedetermination and prediction ofprotein conformation (secondaryand tertiary), experimental studiesof protein folding, chemical modi-fication, mutagenesis (generalizedand site-specific), and physical andbiochemical methods for establish-ing structure-activity relationships.Vol. 6,1993,8 issues
