our Scouting Stars!
Adjacent to Irvine Regional Park, this 210 acre oasis is the
gateway to the great outdoors for youth groups, schools,
organizations, families and Scouting programs. Young
campers and adventurists alike explore rugged terrain, visit our orange grove, dig for ore in the
mine, and take aim at archery. Other camp features include an
amphitheater, an aerospace/astronomy camp, a
ranch camp, a mining camp, ziplines, a climbing wall, a challenge “ropes”
course, and an aquatics center.
The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center meets a long-standing need in the community for kids to experience nature’s
best playground in their own backyard.
Since 1937, the Newport Sea Base has provided fun and valuable educational maritime-based programs to youth from all over the country. Year-round, girls and boys participate in environmental science, boating safety, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, sailing, motor boating, fishing, first aid, stand up paddle boarding, and other aquatics programs and activities. It is also home to three Sea Scout Ships: Del Mar, Renegades, and Triton. Classrooms, along with a library, conference room, crew center and picnic area are also available for group rental.
Located in Rancho Santa Margarita, on the border of Mission Viejo, Oso Lake Scout
Camp is easily accessible. The camp features a 100 acre lake, 15 acres of land,
and is surrounded by O’Neil Regional Park. The Oso Reservoir is the perfect venue for Scouts to enjoy catch-and-release fishing,
rowing, and canoeing. The facilities feature an archery range, BB gun range, nature
center with native garden, a large camping area, a picnic pavilion, and an
amphitheater. Proximity to O’Neill Regional Park provides ample hiking
and orienteering opportunities and the campsite areas are perfect for first-time
campers to hone their skills.

Scouters and Friends of Orange County Council:
Welcome to the first Virtual Annual Appreciation Event! 2020 was a year full of promise, and a year full of challenges. It was our one hundredth anniversary, and it was a year that we will never forget. While so much of 2020 was unlike anything that we have ever done before, it was the same in one very important way: Our Scouting Volunteers made everything possible for our Scouts.
Over 5,000 men and women volunteered their time to bring the Scouting program to life in over 380 Packs, Troops, Crews, Ships and Posts. COVID-19 presented unprecedented challenges, but each of you helped to find ways to make Scouting happen. Many Scout meetings were held in local parks with social distancing and masks. We discovered that keeping it small was a way to keep Scouting big during the virus. The Order of the Arrow, Leadership Development Committee, Outdoor Adventures, High Adventure Training and countless others took the opportunity to look carefully at what we do and made sure that the essential elements were preserved as we carried out exciting programs for our Scouts in a completely different way.
We are very proud of the more than 600 Scouts who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout including our nine members of the inaugural class of women Eagle Scouts as well as one Quartermaster in Sea Scouts! We had several youths earn the Hornaday Award including two receiving the very rare bronze medal. Thousands of boys and girls advanced in rank and one young person was recognized with a lifesaving award. Scouting never stopped in Orange County. We should all be very proud of that.
When the founder of Scouting, Robert Baden Powell, was asked for what a Scout should “Be Prepared” he responded “Why, for any old thing”. This year we all had a chance to do just that. Undoubtedly, as Scouts we will continue to be challenged in new ways as we move forward through 2021 and beyond. In our 101st year as we look forward to things returning to something that we are more accustomed to; we have a wonderful opportunity for us to really appreciate all that we have. So much of what we enjoy in Scouting is due to the generosity and hard work of those who have come before us. Tonight, we get to celebrate nineteen Scouters who have done just that in our districts as they are recognized with the District Award of Merit and nine Scouters who are earning the highest recognition our council can bestow upon a volunteer, the Silver Beaver. Please join us in congratulating these awesome examples of leadership and selfless service to the youth of Orange County.

A special memorial tribute card will be sent to the person designated.
Tributes can honor Scouts achieving the Eagle Scout rank, Silver Beavers, graduates from college and military academics, birthdays, special anniversaries or any other special occasion in a family’s or individual’s life.
Honor someone in a very special way by making a Memorial Tribute & Celebration Gift. To view current tributes and make a contribution, visit our website at www.ocbsa.org or for additional information please contact Dave Jarvis at 714.415.5925 or email [email protected].

Life Saving and Meritorious Action Awards
Nathan Shibata|Medal of Merit
These awards are given to a Scout or Adult Leader for saving or attempting to save a life under circumstances that indicate heroism and risk to one’s own life or for performing some outstanding act of service of a rare or exceptional character that reflects an uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of others.
On December 20, 2019, while eating dinner, Nathan’s mother started choking and aspirating on a piece of food. She has been battling cancer and is not in the best of health. Nathan remained calm and collected during the incident. He administered first aid, cleared her airway, and instructed others to dial 911. Nathan was awarded the Medal of Merit for his quick reaction and assistance in saving a life.
