It was with great excitement and enthusiasm that I took over the presidentship of the Maharashtra state chapter ISA in September 2021. It is three months now. The calendar year just concluded was full of major events. The New Year for Maharashtra state ISA started with a bang. State ISA getting maximum awards at National ISA at both city as well as individual level was really encouraging.

We have started working on all the agenda which I had discussed in my presidential speech at ISACON Nagpur. We are looking forward to many academic events lined up in this year till our state CME. Along with that we plan to have various non-academic events throughout the year like Walkathon, Yoga Day Celebration, Kavi Sammelan, Bhakti Geet Program, Teacher’s Day Celebration, COLS Week Celebration and many more.

Presidentship is just a one year term of office. In this short period of time we have much to accomplish to maintain our position as a respected chapter of national ISA.

I feel lucky to have an enthusiastic team of office bearers at state as well as city level. With their constant support and efforts, I feel confident that we shall accomplish the set goals.

Maharashtra state chapter ISA is organising Masterclasses and Interactive Academic Sessions on speciality anaesthesia topics with several masters in the field every month. We have already planned activities for the coming year.

With many academic events lined up this year, the COVID-19 third wave has affected us. With COVID appropriate behaviour, we will continue our state chapter activities with the same zeal and enthusiasm. We are ever ready to serve the mankind as frontline warriors as and when need arises.

I heartily congratulate Dr. Hemant Shinde, MISANEWS Editor for compiling all the state and the national ISA awards. They are very precious.

We eagerly await feedback from our members. I invite you to share your ideas. They will enable us to develop a more dynamic State branch.

This newsletter will be our tool to keep in touch with you all and we welcome any input from our members. If you want to contribute in the form of cases or articles, please do so and get involved.

Dear MaharashraISAian,

Wish you all a very happy, healthy and SAFE New Year!

By the time you received this bulletin, Corona pandemic may be at it's peak. As you all know the overall situation worldwide is disturbed day by day and so expectations from doctors, especially from us are increased. So let us fight together.

It gives me immense pleasure to write for this first issue of E MISANEWS. It is a perfect platform for all the members of MSCISA to express.

It may be an academic, non-academic, social, cultural, sports or individual achievements. Our aim is to get every member updated with all activities related to Anaesthesiology and Anaesthesiologists.

Since we took charge of state ISA only 3 months back, I am proud to tell you that Maharashtra state bagged a record of 78 awards at the national level this year.

We carried out a lot of activities - academic as well as non-academic.

Every month we are arranging one masterclass academic fest with renowned faculties, one interactive session as debate, how I do it.. Giving opportunity to our members, a stress vaporizers session to reduce occupational stress, to improve efficiency, and to get job satisfaction.

All virtual programs were houseful.

We also arranged non-academic activities like Diwali Pahat Gani, Navratri Celebrations, Cultural Program, Elocution and Essay Competition, which were participated by many and appreciated by all.

We are also providing a digital platform to conduct webinars for all the city branches of MSCISA.

For anaesthesia awareness and COLS we had Pan Maharashtra COLS on 17th October, all branches are conducting COLS and awareness activities regularly at their city levels.

We have active fit anaesthesiologists, sports and cultural club groups.

We are doing so many things to activate our branches and members. We believe in teamwork and we are trying our best.

We will continue to do more in the future for every member and for ISA.

ISA HQ, has launched so many initiatives which are really a need of hours. We will try to implement it all in coming years.

At last, we invite all creative criticism, suggestions and feedback for overall improvement of our activities and for our own MISANEWS letters.

I congratulate Dr. Hemant Shinde for this first newsletter and for his dedicated hardwork done.

My best wishes to this first E MISANEWS of our tenure.

Dear Maharashtra ISA member,

As I accept the responsibility of becoming the MISANEWS editor it gives me great pleasure to present this first issue of the MISANEWS.

The theme of this issue is World Anaesthesia Day celebrations by the various branches.

I thought it to be important as it makes the branches aware of activities conducted by others & it creates healthy competition among them.

As you all must be aware that this year Maharashtra has done exceptionally well and has won 78 prizes in the national conference. I request all the secretaries to inform in future about the respective members & the categories under which they won the prizes so as to spread the awareness across the state of Maharashtra.

The future MISANEWS issues will be having academic as well as non-academic content & I request all the members to contribute to it. I plan to have thematic issues on dedicated subject with interesting cases, debates, complications & management so that the reader gets a complete picture of the subject. I also plan to have a column where a student writes about the teacher. This way we will know about the senior members and their contribution towards our fraternity. This issue has an article on one such doyen of anaesthesia Dr. Bhojraj and it is written by his daughter who also is an Anaesthesiogist from Mumbai.

As the COVID pandemic is at its peak I request all of you to be safe & stay healthy.

MEGACOLS ACTIVITY was conducted Pan Maharashtra on 17th October between 10 am to 11 am.

This activity was conducted in 32 branches of MSCISA at one time.

Nashik ISA donated a sum of Rs.11000 to Vatsalya Old Age Home as part of our WAD celebration.

This is our second impact of kindness where we donate five times the kilometres worked out (walked, run, cycled) by our members in rupees for a noble cause. The First was on 5 Sept. for a library for children in a remote village (30,000).

Achievements

• ISA Karad city branch was installed on 19th March 2019 with barely 25 members.

• This year our city branch won third prize for ‘Best Ether Day’ (small city) Celebration jointly with our neighbours ISA Satara.

• We also won the first prize for 100% voting.

Brief update of Ether Day celebration

• ISA Karad City Branch enthusiastically celebrated World Anaesthesia Day over the entire fortnight starting from October 1st, 2021.

• COLS and public awareness about anaesthesiology was conducted at various places. Received excellent response from the participants.

• Total number of COLS beneficiaries - 301.

• ISA Karad conducted COLS even beyond the city limits on World Anaesthesia Day since the Secretary was out of town on the same day for a Family function and still couldn’t have wasted the opportunity to create awareness about COLS and Anaesthesia speciality on this auspicious day.

• ISA Karad also participated in Art and literary activities of MSCISA as well as ISA National in the form of photographs, poems etc. Our PG student Dr. Priyanka Vishwanathan’s poem got featured in ISA National celebration.

• Department of Anaesthesiology, KIMSDU, Karad also celebrated WAD with its staff and PG students.

• The office bearers’ video for WAD celebration was highly appreciated by MSCISA office bearers.

ISA NAVI MUMBAI CME AUG-2021

World Anaesthesia Day commemorates the birth of anaesthesia on 16th October 1846. When doctors demonstrated the use of ether for the first time on a patient. William T. G. Morton demonstrated publicly the first case and in doing so the surgery changed forever, proving it was possible for patients to undergo surgery without pain. One of the truly great moments in the long history of medicine occurred on a tense fall morning in the surgical amphitheatre of Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital. It was an effective anaesthetic for a surgical patient.

The Department of Anaesthesiology & Department Pain Medicine @ DY Patil University School of Medicine, Hosted by ISA Navi Mumbai city branch, had organized a CME on 16th Oct. 21, at Abbott Hotel Vashi, Navi Mumbai. Themed: WORLD ANAESTHESIA DAY with the following program:

Thane City has been consistently doing academic, non-academic, COLS and Conference participation under the encouragement of our President Dr. Minal Gadgil and Secretary Dr. Manisha Ghosh.

We released the first edition of our E-bulletin Samvedana on 16th October 2021, WAD. It was ably compiled by our Editor Dr. Charchill Wagh.

Conducted COLS activities throughout the week and trained approximately 200 lay people under the guidance of our co-ordinator Dr. Shweta Patil. We won the second prize in ETHER DAY celebrations (WAD) in the small city category.

At conferences, Dr. Sabiha Shaikh was impressed with her penmanship by winning the second prize at the Essay competition. Dr. Bharne impressed everybody with his instruments, the melodica and the synthesizer and won the first prize. Dr. Parna Thakkar won the third runner up prize by her melodious singing.

Society of Anaesthesiologists Pimpri Chinchwad (SAPC)

SAPC kick-started it’s World Anaesthesia Day October 2021 celebrations keeping in mind the theme “Teamwork: Stronger teams for better patient care”. We conducted COLS and BCLS programs at various hospitals for the paramedical staff as well other administrative staff. Empowering the people working with and alongside us surely improves patient outcome, reduces anaesthesiologists work stress as well as creates awareness about our fraternity.

SAPC began its WAD celebrations from 29th Sept. 2021 - The World Restart a Heart Day which continued till 17th Oct. 2021. We conducted 18 COLS plus BCLS programs. The total numbers of beneficiaries were around 600. In all the programs the participants were educated about anaesthesia.

Anaesthesia awareness poster exhibition was held at 4 venues (D. Y. Patil Medical College, YCM Hospital, MIMER Medical College Talegaon & Durga Tedki)

Our WAD October 2021 celebrations concluded with a walkathon for all SAPC members with a Fit Anaesthesiologist theme on Sunday 17th Oct. 2021. The program highlights were

• Inauguration of program by Additional commissioner, IPS officer of PCMC Mr. Ipper

17th October MEGA COLS - MSCISA Activity

• At 8 am on the 17th October 2021, MEGA COLS training was arranged at Mahavir Garden, Kolhapur. About 75 people were trained during the activity, with hands-on practice on mannequins.

• A gala dinner organized at the Residency Club, Kolhapur at 7 pm

• We took the opportunity to invite Dr. Mamatha Lala to our celebration to share with us, her experience of her 6 months long visit to Antarctica in 2012 for a national expedition, as the only doctor for the 28 member expedition crew on board & furthermore the only lady on the expedition. Dr. Lala travelled to Kolhapur all the way from Mumbai to grace our celebrations with her presence. Needless to say, the presentation was a surreal audiovisual extravaganza for everyone. The audience was in total awe of Dr. Lala’s accomplishments, her once in a lifetime experience. Truly inspiring talk & first of its kind experience for all of us.

ISA Mumbai Metro

Amid the COVID presence, the year 2021, saw the rise of anaesthesiologists to be COVID warriors, intensivists, and pain physicians. ISA national extended their support in all possible ways to all its members via city & state branches. Academic activities were conducted all over the country using a virtual platform. ISA Mumbai Metro Branch conducted multiple webinars, research paper presentations, World Anaesthesia Day 2021 conference (WAD 2021), COLS public awareness activities. WAD 2021 was truly an international conference with a comprehensive scientific program that covered the topics like ‘Mystery of anaesthesia’, ‘Respiratory physiology’, ‘Thyroid stories’, ‘Research & publication’, ‘Pain management’ and many more. It not only had didactic lectures and panel discussions but also had interactive sessions like, ‘Your challenges, Our solutions’ where participants could present their challenging cases to be answered by expert consultants. Other interesting categories included were ‘Just A Minute Session’ and ‘Patient Narratives’. The 2-day conference with state council credit points was a great success with about 350 registrations, a virtual cultural evening, many winners for research paper publications. ‘Striving for Excellence and Innovations for Safety’ was the conference theme. Dr. J. Divatia, Dr. Raghu Thota and Dr. Sweta Salgaonkar were organizing chairperson, organizing secretary and scientific chairperson respectively for WAD 2021. Dr. Anita Shetty and Dr. Lipika Baliar Singh were ISA Mumbai Metro secretary and president respectively. And the ISA Mumbai Metro branch begged the first prize for best world anaesthesia day celebrations in a Metro category award.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this will be a virtual conference and will be an extraordinary experience. One can safely say that the demonstration by Dr. WTG Morton on 16th October 1846 was the defining moment for anaesthesia. A new speciality was born. A hundred and fifty years down the line, our young speciality has witnessed astonishing transformation in terms of equipment and techniques. The standard of anaesthesia care is now refined to the peak of safety. A gawky newcomer has emerged a gorgeous beauty! And we invite you to be a part of this celebration. This conference promises to involve you in a veritable plethora of scientific sessions, panel discussions, orations, case discussions and presentations of research papers; and all this in the presence of an experienced and knowledgeable faculty from our country and abroad. Welcome aboard for a memorable journey!

The other awards that the branch begged was the first prize for COLS activities. Dr. Deepa Kane, was the mind behind the activities and she also was awarded an individual prize for her contribution for public awareness for COLS. Dr. Indrani Hemantkumar, Dr. Lipika Baliar Singh won the proficiency awards for the branch.

ISA Satara WAD Celebration - 2021

This time we decided to celebrate WAD-2021 in a bit different way. Our creative and enthusiastic President Dr. Madhuri Limaye Madam suggested including surgeons and hospital staff also in the WAD celebration and give a sweet surprise to our ISA Satara members also!

We distributed one kg vanilla cakes to almost 70 hospitals in Satara city and periphery on 15th October. We kept a note for surgeons about the Idea of celebration and requested them to cut the cake with your anaesthesiologist and hospital staff! All the surgeons responded very enthusiastically. Our inboxes were flooded with the smiling faces of the OT teammates! The plan was a super success. It also helped in strengthening the trust, love and respect of our faculty. Here are a very few glimpses of the WAD 2021 celebration!

माझे बाबा- यशवंत गणेश भोजराज. ��चं आयु� नावाला साजेसच होते. पण ��ना ��ा नावानी कधीच कोणी बोलावले नाही. लहानपणी 'बाळ', मोठेपणी बाळासाहेब आ�ण �म��नी बावाजी असं ��ना संबोधलं. �ा काळात नावाजलेले डॉ�र गणेश भोजराज व रमाबाई भोजराज य��ा पाच मुल�म�े बाब�चा नंबर दसुरा. ज� २५ ऑग� १९२० साली अमरावतीला झाला आ�ण �ाथ�मक �शक्षण ए�ी �ूलमधून. लहानपणापासून अ�ासा��त�र� अनेक छंद होते ��ना. भटकंती, पोहणे, �गय�रोहण, कु�ी, तर कधी ि�केट, फुटबॉल खेळत राहणे. बालगंधव�चं नाटक रा�भर जागून बघायची �जद्द होती ��ना.

ते�ा भारतात भूलशा� बा�ाव�ेत होते. डॉ�र बा�लग�नी बाब�ना इ�ंंडला जाऊन �शकून यायला स��गतलं आ�ण बोटीचं �तक�ट हातात ठेवलं. एिडबंरा, कािडर्फ, लंडन व लीड्स ही भूलशा�ाची मं�दरे मानली जात. �तथली �गती, ��ची �श�, संशोधक�य �वृ�ी, आ�ण ��ेक गो�ीतलं सखोल ज्ञान बघून बाबा भारावून गेले. आप�ाला �मळालेलं ज्ञान व अनुभव मायदेशी येऊन आप�ा �म��म�े कधी एकदा वाटतो, असं ��ना झालं होतं. एिडबंरा �वद्यापीठाने भूलत��साठ� सव�� रावरची पर�क्षा आयो�जत केली होती. बाब�नी तीन म�हने �दवसरा� अ�ास क�न ती पर�क्षा �दली आ�ण ते परतायला �नघाले. �ा पर�क्षेत बाबा प�हले आले होते. �वद्यापीठाने मोठे पद देऊ केले, पण बाबा भारतात परतले. ते परत आ�ावर अ�ंत नावाजले�ा सजर्नबरोबर काम क� लागले. अनेकदा �दवस �दवस ��ची भेट होत नसे. पहाटेपासून रा�ीपय�त ��चे काम चाले. याच काळात �नयतीने घाव घातला. वाढलेलं वजन आ�ण तणावामुळे लागलेली धू�पानाची सवय यामुळे सद�तसा�ा वष�च ��ना �दवीकाराचा ती� झटका आला. �ानंतर ��नी �ढ �न�याने �श�बद्ध जीवनाचा आराखडा तयार केला. वजन दोनशेव�न १४५ प�ड�वर आणले. धू�पान सोडले आ�ण वषर्भरातच पूवर्वत काम सु� केले.

आज ��चे �श� जगभर पसरले आहेत. डॉ. शम� हे ��चे �श� 'कािडर्याक अॅने�े�शया सोसायटी'चे अ�क्ष आहेत. ते आठवण स�गतात, 'एके�दवशी श�ि�या चालू असतानाच ��ाचे �दय बंद पडले. भोजराज सर अध� तास ते परत चालू करायचा अ�वरत �य� करत होते. शेवटी यश आलं. �दय काम क� लागलं. आ�ी बाक�चं ऑपेरेशन लवकर संपवलं. काही �दवस�नी पेशंट सुख�प घर� गेला. या घटनेचा मा�ा मनावर सखोल �भाव पडला. �ा शा�ाने �ाण 'परत' येऊ शकतात, ते शा� मला �शकायचं होतं. मी सर�चा �वद्याथ� झालो. ��ाबरोबर काम करणे �णजे गु�कुलात �शकणं. गीतेसारखी ��ची �शकव�ाची पद्धत होती. ��ो�र संवादाची. �ामुळे ��नी �शकवलेलं �रणात खोलवर कोरलं जायचं कायमच. �ॅ��सम�े �� असतानासुद्धा , आ�ाला कािडर्याक अॅने�े�शया �शकव�ासाठ� ते अनेक तास चालणार्‍या �दयश�ि�या मोफत करायचे. इतके ते प�रपूणर्तावादी होते.'

�ावेळ�, अॅने�ेिटकस नावाची कंपनी होती. ती भूल दे�ासाठ� लागणार� यं�े बनवायची. �तचे मालक होते राव. कुठ�ाही हॉ��टल�ा यं�ात �बघाड झाला तर ते बाब�कड ेयायचे. केईएम या सं�ेवर बाब�चे अ�तशय �ेम होते. खासक�न भूल�वभागावर. तेच ��चे खरं गु�कुल होते. हे ऋण ��ा मनात कायमचे होते. संगणक आले ते�ा बाब�नी �वभागाला संगणक �दले. मुल�साठ� सीएमइ वािषर्क स� चालू केले. �ात भूलशा�ावर त� व �वद्या��म�े चच� होत असे. एमडीत �थम येणार्‍या �वद्या��ला तसेच प�रचा�रक�ना बाब�नी बक्षीसही ठेवले होते.

बाब�कडून सतत भूलशा�ा�ा गो�ी ऐक�ामुळे मीपण भूलशा�ाचाच अ�ास कर�ाचा �नणर्य घेतला. टाटा हॉ��टलम�े एमडी झा�ावर ब�बे हॉ��टलम�े �जू झाले. बाब�बरोबर काम कर�ाची माझी प�हलीच वेळ. �ातही कॅ�र श�ि�ये�शवाय दसुरा अनुभव नाही. बाबा ��ात सजर्नबरोबर �दय, म�द,ू हाड ेया सार्‍याच श�ि�य�साठ� काम करत. याचा मा�ावर खूप दबाव आला. पण नंतर ��ाकडून एकेक खुबी आ�सात करता आली.

माझा भाऊ शेखरनेही डॉ�र �ायचे ठर�वले आ�ण आथ�पेिडक सजर्न �ायचे ठरवले. नंतर तो मण��ा श�ि�य�कड ेआकिषर्त झाला आ�ण पारंगतही झाला. पाठदखुीचा �ास असं� लोक�ना असूनही �ाकड ेदलुर्क्ष होते, असे �ाला वाटले. फ� मण�ा�ा �ासासाठ� वेगळ� शाखा असावी, या �ा�ा �य��ना १५ वष��ा अ�वरत �य��नी यश आले. १९९३ साली भारतातली प�हली शाखा केईएमम�े सु� झाली. �ाला मानस�ान �मळ�ाचं दसुरं कारण �णजे �ाने '�ाईन फाउंडशेन.' �ा�ा मा�मातून गरजूं�ा मण��ची श�ि�या मोफत होते. आजवर अशा साडेतीन हजार श�ि�या झा�ा आहेत.

आमचे बाबा आयु�भर कामात जर� खूप �� होते, तर� ��नी छंद , आप�ा जबाबदार्‍य�कड ेकधी दलुर्क्ष केलं नाही. वाचनाची ��ना अतोनात आवड होती. शे�पीअर, माकर् ट्वने, टॉल�ॉय, वुडहाऊस हे ��चे आवडते लेखक. मराठ�तले आवडते �णजे पु. ल. देशप�डे. असं सुंदर आयु� �तीत के�ानंतर वया�ा ७५ �ा वष� ��नी �े�ा�नवृ�ी �ीकारली. �म�, नातवंड ेय��ासोबत ते वेळ घालवत. क�वता वाचनाची नवीन आवड ��ना लागली. कुसुमा�ज, ग. �द. माडगूळकर हे ��चे आवडते कवी. एकदा शेखरने ��ा खास �म��ना घर� जेवायला बोलावले. मैफल खूप रंगली. आठवण�ची उजळणी झाली. बघता बघता म�रा� उलटली. नाईलाजाने सग��नी एकमेक�चा �नरोप घेतला पण लवकरच परत भेट�ाचे आ�ासन घेऊन. सगळे आपाप�ा घर� पोचलेही न�ते.. आ�ण बाब�ना �दय�वकाराचा झटका आला. क्षणात सवर् संपलं होतं.

बाब�चा अनोखा अ�वहार�वाद, जीवनात�ा मू��वर असलेली अढळ �न�ा आ�ण उपभोगवादाचा �तर�ार अशा गुण�चा ख�जना असणारे बाबा कुणाचे आदशर् नसले तरच नवल. ��चं नसणं मला फार जाणवतं. मला वाटतं क� बाब�चं आयु� �णजे एक सुंदर �च� आहे. �ात �हमालयासारखी ��तमा असणारे पवर्त आहेत. ए�रे�इतक� उंच असणार� ��ची नै�तकता आहे, दगडमातीचा कणखरपणा आहे, गवताचा न�पणा आहे, सव�ना आप�ा सावलीत सामावून घेऊन ��चे संरक्षण कर�ाचा वृक्षाचा उदारपणा आहे. आ�ण मधूनच वाहणारा �ेमाचा झरा आहे! हे �च� आम�ा �दयात अजरामर आहे...

Dr. Lakshmi Narayana C. Patil expired on 3 January 2022 due to sudden cardiac arrest at home.

Dr. L. C. Patil born in 1955 completed his MBBS and DA from B. J. Medical College Pune in 1984. He was practising as a consultant in anaesthesiology at Jalgaon since 1984. Also he was active member of Jalgaon Anaesthesia society and life member of Indian society of anaesthesiology.

He was very punctual, honest, straightforward and spiritual person. He will be remembered by all friends forever.

He was an excellent photographer and always used to shoot many Academic events and friends get together in his camera and circulate the memory to all the friends.

He is survived by wife Dr. Sarojini Patil and two daughters Dr. Mona and Dr. Sonal all of them are gynaecologist practising actively.

May God rest his soul in peace.
