Priority Notice PN2010-13 Microsoft End of Support for Windows XP SP2 SP3 Upgrade

SUBJECT: Immediate mandatory upgrade of Experion Stations to Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 ANOMALY SUMMARY: Microsoft extended support for Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 ends on the July 13, 2010. After this date no further support, including security updates, are available from Microsoft. For more details refer to the Microsoft website: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle. This will affect Experion EPKS R310.2 and R301.2 that use Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2. Without Microsoft security updates there is an increased risk of a malicious software agent (virus, worm, Trojan, etc.) affecting a system. POTENTIAL CUSTOMER OBSERVABLE SYMPTOMS: If a system is affected by a malicious software agent symptoms could range from performance impact to complete loss of view depending on the action of the malicious software agent. New ASM Guideline Published

The ASM Consortium has recently announced the publication of their third best practice guideline document. Effective Procedural Practices is the latest book available for purchase from Amazon.com. This book, like Effective Operator Display Design and Effective Alarm Management Practices, represents key learning from 15 years of Consortium research on topics relating to reducing or mitigating abnormal situations in plant operation environments. The research of the ASM Consortium has shown that improper operating procedures can lead to plant incidents. This book is designed to help companies learn from the best practices of Consortium members. The book will provide guidance on procedure development, content, deployment, maintenance and training. For more information on the work of the ASM Consortium, visit www.asmconsortium.org.

Loop Scout Benchmarking Services

How is your plant performing?

If your plant was plotted on this average benchmark plot, where would it be?

Honeywell Process Solutions has benchmarked over 1000 sites with more than 3,000,000 analyses creating the world’s largest control loop performance repository. The benchmark report will help you focus on the areas in your facility that need the most attention and will enable your path toward operational excellence.

Justify control loop performance monitoring

To justify monitoring you control loop performance, you need data. Use the Honeywell benchmark to investigate performance and provide evidence for that unfunded but critical project.

HINTS Page 5 July 2010

What’s in it for me?

Poor control loop performance is a symptom of an under performing process. Third or fourth quartile performers typically attain a throughput increase of 0.5% to 5% (depending on the industry) by resolving the root cause. This philosophy has been used by more than 65 sites in all industries across the world to achieve higher production rates. In Honeywell Specialty Materials sites, throughput increases of 2% to 6% have been sustained for several years.

Problems not associated with control performance often manifest themselves as poor loop performance so it is not uncommon to discover root causes in APC, process design or even maintenance practices. You will never know the extent of the opportunity if you don’t benchmark your facility. The benchmark is free to SESP Value Plus connected customers and telephone support is provided.

What do I receive?

The performance comparison is done at three different levels. Average performance against the world’s average performance Average performance by loop type versus the world by loop type

Quick and Easy

Installation takes about one hour, data collection takes two to six days and the benchmark is ready minutes later.

Domain Controller Requirements for EPKS R400 and Interoperability with Earlier Experion Release

With Experion R400, we now support Windows 2008 for the Experion Servers and the Domain Controller. We are regularly asked whether that would be a problem when using Experion R400 with earlier Experion releases (in a DSA architecture) There is interoperability between R400 and prior releases of TPS and Experion as far as the DC is concerned. So It means that a DC running W2008 could be used with earlier releases (with limitations). Some limitations to consider: R400 requires that the R400 DC security be installed on the DC – this is backward compatible and performs the same functions as prior releases. R400 requires the DC be Windows Server 2003 or 2008, 32-bit. Support for 64-bit DC and WS2008 R2 is coming, but not for initial release of R400. Older versions of Windows on the DC are not supported by R400.

Alarm Scout - Today’s Services Special

Alarm Scout $9,995* Honeywell’s Alarm Scout service is the perfect tool to easily measure the extent of a site’s alarm and control system events on a regular basis. Alarm Scout automatically collects performance data on system alarms and events and returns e-mail reports to key process owners enabling a continuous improvement approach to alarm performance improvement. Alarm Scout reveals the alarms that continually demand operator attention, alerting users that a need for a remedy may be in order. With Alarm Scout, users can quickly improve the overall safety of their operating environment by actively addressing their “worst actors” on an on-going basis. In addition, the Alarm Scout analysis engine provides users with one-page Alarm Performance Benchmark Reports that summarize the overall alarm performance for particular operator consoles or areas of responsibility. These can be used to easily track and monitor alarm performance and identify (and justify) areas where more traditional alarm management approaches may be required.

Customers applying this simple alarm management methodology have seen significant improvements in alarm management performance: Customer Success: “Average Alarm Rate Reduced 75%. Nearly all improvements achieve in 3-6 months” Customer Success: “40% Reduction in Weekly Alarms. 88% Reduction in Disabled Alarms” (1st 12 months) Consider adding Alarm Scout into your Honeywell support contract today to begin realizing the benefits of improved alarm management at your facility. For additional information, contact [email protected]. *Applied on up to 2 systems per site

Avoid Incidents due to Mismanagement of Work Procedures

To avoid Abnormal Situations in the plant due to improper procedures and non adherence to procedures follow the best practices presented in the latest ASM Guidelines publication Effective Procedural Practices. These guidelines, compiled from years of research and the best practices of process industry leaders, describe what Content to include, how to Present it, how to Develop, Deploy and Maintain procedures, and how to Train staff on procedures. This publication is third in a series of ASM Guidelines, which includes Effective Alarm Management Practices and Effective Operator Display Design. All of the ASM publications are available to the public through Amazon. ASM member organizations should refer to their ASM Representative for access to these guidelines
