Task I - Pasta Rainbow

Gather all your boring, non-colored dry pasta and get ready to transform it into something fun!

Use all kinds of pasta you can get your hands on {bow-tie, wagon wheel, penne etc} but it is

always a great idea to use what you already have at home, first.

What you will need:

● Dry pasta

● 7 sealable plastic bags

● Food color

● Water

● Glitter (optional)

● Paper towels

● A4 Paper

● Markers

● Glue

Instructions:

1- Grab 7 little sealable bags.

2- Divide your dry pasta into the bags equally.

3- Add 2 squirts of each food color and 2 caps full of water. (If you want glitter pasta, add 2

pinches of glitter inside the bags along with the food color and rub.)

4- Make sure the bags are tightly sealed and start shaking!

5- Once the colors are evenly mixed, spread the colored pasta on a paper towel lined surface

(like a tray or counter). Make sure you get all the color evenly spread out over the pasta.

6- Leave the pasta to dry. (It does not take very long.)

7- Once it has dried, start assembling the rainbow. Take an A4 paper and draw a rainbow, with

its sections using a marker. (Hint: How many colors does a rainbow have? That’s how many

strands you will draw!)

8- Start pasting the pasta by applying glue on the paper. Each strand of the rainbow should have

its own color, in the correct order.

After making your rainbow, answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper:

1. How is a rainbow formed?

2. Why is a rainbow seen after it rains?

3. Can a rainbow be seen at any time of the day?

4. What are the colors of a rainbow? List in the correct order.

5. Can a rainbow be seen at night? Explain your answer.

Recycling is when things that are no longer wanted (like garbage)are reused to make new things. Recycling helps the world bycausing less pollution and protecting the homes of wild animals. Italso saves energy.

The principle of reducing waste, reusing and recyclingresources and products is often called the "3Rs." Reducingmeans choosing to use things with care to reduce the amountof waste generated.

Which Materials Can Be Recycled?

Paper, plastic, glass, metal, fabric, and even food can be recycled.

How Can We Recycle?

Most homes have recycling bins so that we can recycle our own garbage, such as drinks bottlesand cereal boxes. The rubbish can also be taken to recycling banks or at local recycling centers.

How Are Things Recycled?

Large trucks will usually take away the garbage from the recycling bins. The rubbish is thensorted and taken to factories to be made into something new.

Glass, Metal, and Plastic

Glass, metal, and plastic are washed and then broken down into small pieces. The pieces arethen melted and made into new things, such as glass jars and plastic bottles.

Paper

Paper is recycled by cleaning it in soapy water. Any ink is washed off and the wet paper ismixed and rolled out really thin. It is then left to dry.

Activity: Make Recycled PaperHave fun making recycled paper using scraps of used paperin your home. Follow these steps to make beautiful recycledpaper that you could use for making art or writing letters.Thisactivity is an excellent sensory experience for children,and italso helps them appreciate the work involved in creating atool we use almost every day: paper!

What You Need:

Uncoated used paperWaterA blender or a food processor (or a fork ifunavailable)A rectangular bin to hold water (a 13” x 9” pan wouldalso work)Mesh or screen, such as a window screenAn absorbent cloth or piece of fabricDecorations like dried flowers or seeds (optional)Gloves for handling the paper (optional)

What You Do:

1. Rip up your used paper into small pieces (one inch long works well).Note: Use anyuncoated paper available in your home, but not shiny or glossy paper (like magazinecovers and pages).

2. Separate the paper by color. This will allow you to make recycled paper in differentshades and hues, if desired. 3. Soak the paper scraps in water for a few hours orovernight.

4. Place the paper scraps and enough water to cover the scraps in the blender or foodprocessor, and blend until it becomes a uniform mixture, roughly equivalent to runnyoatmeal. Note: If a blender is unavailable, you could cut the paper into smaller pieces,make sure to let it soak overnight, and use a fork and your hands to mash up the pulp.

5. Put the mesh or screen on top of the bin. Dump the paper pulp onto the screen andsqueeze as much of the water out by pushing the pulp down onto the screen, letting thewater drip into the bin. Form the pulp into a rectangle or whatever shape you would likeyour paper to be. The thickness of the paper can vary.

6. If you choose to add dried flowers or seeds to your paper, this is the time to incorporatethem. Gently press them into the pulp. 7. Put the cloth on top of the pulp and press down tofurther remove water from the pulp. The more water you squeeze out now, the faster your

paper will dry.

8. Carefully turn the paper pulp over onto the absorbent cloth and place it in the sun or in awarm, dry place in your house to dry overnight.

Enjoy using your very own homemade recycled paper! You could use these sheets tomake birthday cards, write on them with permanent markers, create a watercolor painting,or to give away as gifts to friends and family. If you placed seeds in them, remember to tellyour friends that they can plant the paper!

This experiment tests what type of liquid is best for growing seeds and can bedone using a wide variety of liquids. Since we already discussed that plantsneed water to grow, we first tested different types of water to see if it made adifference.

Use grass seed for this experiment because it sprouts fairly quickly but youcan use bean seeds (lima beans soaked overnight in water work well) or anyother type of seed you wish.

We added the same amount of soil and seed to each cup and labeled them.We then measured out the same amount of water for each cup and wateredthe seeds with the different types of water and set them by the window.Students make predictions as to which one they feel will work best. And whatwas their conclusion.

Procedure:

Step 1: Start with four plastic cups, each filled about 1/3 full with soil from ouryard. To all cups we added three different seeds: a broccoli seed, a lettuceseed, and a pea seed.

Step 2: Then we added labels that said “plain water,” “salt water,” “sugarwater,” and “vinegar”

Step 3: To create salt water, salt water (1 cup water with 1 Tbsp salt).

Step 4: To create sugar water, sugar water (1 cup water with 1 Tbsp sugar).

Step 5: Then to each of the seed cups we added the labelled liquid. We thenplaced the cups on our kitchen window sill to see how the seeds would grow.Over the next several days we continued to add liquid to each of the cups asneeded to keep the soil moist. I used the extra salt water and sugar water wecreated to continue watering the seeds in the salt water and sugar waterconditions.
