Grand Chapter Elected Officers 2010, Jurisdiction of Georgia
Brief History of Prince Hall Grand Chapter
The Grand Lodge of Masons met in Rome, Georgia, in June 1897. At that time it was decided to establish a Widow and Orphans Home. A committee composed of the Grand Master, the Grand Secretary, and others was elected to select a location. The same fall Americus, Georgia, was chosen. After this was done, the great task to support it was considered. Thought was then given to the ladies. The Eastern Star was considered. Grand Master W. E. Terry and Grand Secretary Sol C. Johnson were induced to become members. This was done by being connected wit the Grand Chapter of the Jurisdiction of the district of Columbia. That Grand Chapter was induced to grant dispensation to Electa Chapter of Savannah No. 1, Martha Chapter of Ashburn No. 2, and Adah Chapter of Baxley No. 3. These three Chapters were formed in 1898. Through the influence of Brothers Terry and Johnson, Electa Chapter No. 1 was organized July 18, 1898, in Savannah. Then the following were organized: Martha Chapter, No. 2, October 18, 1898, at Ashburn; Adah Chapter, No. 3, October 20, 1898, at Baxley, Georgia; Lydia Chapter, No. 1, November 24, 1898, at Darien; Rachel Chapter , No. 5, November 25, 1898, at Darien; Bethany Chapter, No. 6, November 28, 1898, at Hasty; Mary Chapter, No. 7, at Willacoochee; Shiloh Chapter No. 8, April 27, 1899, Sandersville; Rebecca Chapter, April 30, 1899, Darien; Sarah Chapter, No. 10, March 2, 1899, Valdosta; White Star Chapter, No. 1, 1899, Tifton; Kings and Daughters Chapter, No. 12, August 19, 1899, Hazelhurst; and Queen of Sheba Chapter, No. 13, August 25, 1899, Cordele. These Chapters called a meeting for the forming of the Grand Chapter in Savannah, Georgia, Monday, August 29, 1899, at the Duffy Street Hall. Sol C. Johnson, Worthy Patron of Electa Chapter, called the meeting to order and made a motion that Grand Master W. E. Terry be Chairman. Brother J. H. Babcock of Shiloh Chapter moved that Sister Mary L. Sellars (Ayers) be Secretary. Constitution and Bylaws were adopted. These were interspersed with a pleasing program. The following officers were elected: W. E. Terry, Worthy Grand Patron; Sis. Dorothy Edwards, Worthy Grand Matron; Sis. Mary L. Sellers (Ayers), Worthy Grand Associate Matron; Sis. Emma Walker, Worthy Grand Treasurer; Sol C. Johnson, Worthy Grand Secretary; Sis. Annie L. Babcock, Worthy Grand Conductress; Sis. Ella Thomas, Worthy Grand Associate Conductress; and I. F. Burgress, Worthy Grand Lecturer. The following appointments were made: J. . addressed to Sister Barbara Jackson from the Most Worshipful Grand Master regarding the investigation into misappropriation of funds. Per the Grand Master’s orders, Barbara
Jackson was expelled and is no longer a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in this jurisdiction.
Before taking a break for lunch, the Grand Matron asked the Grand Choir to lead us into a song. Sister Susan Gibson, Grand Musician led the Grand Chapter into a stress

prepare their reports. Demonstration: The Grand Lecturer’s demonstrated how the pass should be taken up.
They then entertained a few questions submitted by members pertaining to the OES dress. The following was noted: OES dress is all white. Do not wear gold jewelry, dresses
and blouses must have sleeves or a jacket to cover sleeveless attire. High splits are not permitted, as the GWM have stated in the past, if you have a high split, sew it up. It was questioned about slips, Sisters must wear white slips. It is the Matron’s responsibility to
ensure that they tell new Sisters about the attire. Sister Debra Capers, Grand Lecturer
Proceedings of the 112th Communication, Columbus, Georgia (June 15 - 18, 2010) Page 41
reminded us that this organization is Bible based and we should be dressing accordingly, always decent and in order.
The Grand Lecturer’s along with the Grand Matron’s help answered a question from the floor; “What do we wear to the banquet?” We were reminded that gowns and/or tops
with spaghetti straps are inappropriate for banquets unless a jacket is worn with it. We were further reminded that there is a dress code in place for every event of the O.E.S.
and that Sisters should not wear pants to any meetings or banquets. However, we are permitted to wear our Star-Point colors to our banquet unless the MWGM indicates otherwise.
Question: Who’s responsible for programs? There should be a Program Committee but
the Matron is ultimately responsible for proofing all programs before printing. If the Matron is unsure about the proper format, she should consult with the District Worthy Matron or Lecturer.
The Grand Lecturer’s ended by telling us 10 ways to wreck your Chapter. PGWP,
Brother Aaron Kent shared an inspiring poem with us, the poem was titled “The Dash”. Preparations were made to receive the MWGM, Ramsey Davis, Jr., 33° and his
entourage. Brother Marvin Knight, GWP welcomed the MWGM and his guests as they were escorted to the East. We were delighted to receive greetings from the MWGM, afterwards, he introduced the Brothers who were visiting with him. They were: Brother
Douglas Jones, RW Deputy Grand Master, Brother Bruce James, RW Senior Warden, Brother Reuben Redd, Grand Security and other members of the Grand Security Team.
The MWGM cited some of the accomplishments during his tenure included being successful at obtaining complete exemption from taxes on the Grand East. Due to
tenants occupying space at our property on Auburn Avenue, we were given a 65% exemption status.
MWGM Davis updated us on the Grand Secretary’s investigation. He informed us that Barbara Jackson established an account, placed checks into it and used the monies
for personal benefit. Although it’s a clear case of embezzlement, he felt it would not serve a purpose to prosecute her. He further stated that a meeting between Barbara
Jackson, her husband, and himself is scheduled to take place on Monday. Barbara has already been expelled from the Order but he’s making an attempt to recoup the monies.
The MWGM stated his purpose for visiting us on today was to entertain nominations of Officers but that will now take place on tomorrow. The MWGM allowed those visiting
with him to give remarks. He then asked if there were any questions we had of him, there were two.
1) “Can you comment on additional Chapters?” He was uncertain as to what the person meant but he stated he knew it takes a long time to start a new Chapter and is hoping the Grand Chapter works on that.
2) “Can you comment on an edict issued by the Imperial Potentate regarding
Turtles?” Though he has not read the edict, he has repeatedly stated the Imperial Potentate does not have jurisdiction in Georgia.
Proceedings of the 112th Communication, Columbus, Georgia (June 15 - 18, 2010) Page 42
Before departing, Brother Reuben Redd asked if anyone was ticketed for parking on yesterday. There were many. Brother Redd indicated that he was working on
something in regards to those tickets and should have an answer by this evening. The MWGM thanked us for all of the support given him over the past five years. Having
answered all questions asked of him, the MWGM and his guests exited the Grand Chapter Room.
GWM, Sister Marilyn Moore asked all members who have attended 50 consecutive Grand Sessions to please stand. Sister Tyree J. Walters, P.M. was the only person with this
distinct honor; she was presented a beautiful yellow rose. The GWM then asked any members attending the Grand Session for the first time to stand; there were many. She
then asked all of them under 80 years of age to sit. Sister Elois Travick who’s 86 years old was the only person who remained standing. GWM Moore shared with us that Sister Travick has been in her life for a very long time. Sister Travick, a member of Dublin
District No. 19 is also a member of the GWM’s Chapter. A rose was presented to all members over the age of 80.
Committee Reports: Gibbons & Grimes Arts & Crafts: The committee thanked everyone for their support and
stated a total of $1,312.00 was raised to date. A quilt will be raffled off on tomorrow. Grand Lecturers: The committee addressed balloting and demonstrated the proper
way of balloting on candidates.
The Grand Associate Matron, Sister Lynnette S. Hymes was then asked to call the Grand Chapter to recreation until Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. All were asked to please attend the MWGM’s Banquet at 7:00 p.m.

Memorial Committee
To the established Protocol:
This annual report is given to the Glory of God. In our daily lives we need
strength; strength is only gained through our faith in God, for His word is filled with
promises. Promises like “I will never leave your or forsake you”. Direction to
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not to thine own understanding”.
We need each other. Hebrews 10:25 tells us to forsake not the fellowship of the
saints…” We must trust in God, we must love one another; we must be a willing
vessel that God can use.
When we look over the past year we can see our hills and mountains. We can
see the peaks and valleys. This should reassure us that we cannot make this
journey alone.
It has been my request for the linking of a Prayer Chain throughout this State of
Georgia for the Prince Hall Family. The response has not been good so I have
continued to pray for the Prince Hall Family every 27th day of the month. Why
the 27th? We have 27 Districts in the State and we need a designated time that can unite us. Just as important as our monthly meetings, our District meetings
and our Annual Grand Session; we need a monthly prayer day.
Proceedings of the 112th Communication, Columbus, Georgia (June 15 - 18, 2010) Page 73
Memorial Committee, continued
This Prayer Day is designed to strengthen us in our weak areas and give power
to our strong areas. These areas include but are not limited to our youth,
sickness and distress, communication, leadership, bereavement, finances,
Sisterhood, Brotherhood, harmony, legal functions and office functions. These
areas of concerns are some we know need prayer yet it has been an area that
needed attention and much prayer.
It comes as no surprise for Jesus asked His disciples at the darkest hour of His life,
“Could you not tarry one hour?” They went to sleep when he needed them
most and while He labored in prayer. He knew the enemy will come so this is
why God gave me the vision to form a chain of prayer; to block the fiery darts of
the enemy and strengthen our family.

display. Also, a brief history about the beginning of Eastern Stars in the United
States and Georgia is on display; including the first minutes taken by Brother Sol

Prince hall Grand Chapter in Georgia. These minutes were researched and
obtained by our own Past Grand Worthy Patron, Brother Aaron Kent. Also on

Recommendations:
Based on the time it takes to enter and prepare the Georgia Highlights for
production, in order to maintain the highest quality, the C.C.F.C. recommends the following:
1. Deadline for news articles, April 30, 2011allowing time to enter, edit, and make corrections.
2. Each Chapter submits one article, free without a picture. Each District,
Past Matron's Council, Youth Chapters, Honors, In Memory submits an
article without a picture.
3. The Grand Chapter charges a fee of $15.00 per picture to go in the
Highlights.
4. Each Chapter sends in original photos in black and white.
5. Like to have articles typed to reduce errors and insure accuracy in articles.
6. Keep news articles short. Articles should reflect your Chapter's actual activities before the deadline.
Proceedings of the 112th Communication, Columbus, Georgia (June 15 - 18, 2010) Page 77
Bertha C. Brown CCFC Committee, continued
7. The Grand C.C.F.C./Editor send a reminder to Chapter to send in their
articles before the deadline.
8. Each Worthy Matron buys a minimum of two or more Highlights to take back to their Chapter and each District Matron; two to take back to their
District.
9. The Grand Chapter charge will be $8.00 for the Georgia Highlights
because of the increase in printing costs.

be doing the deeds that are kind with our hearts ever to comfort others." Let us
live for service, my Sisters and Brothers.
As we order our steps, on this day the Lord has made may the love of God surround you, May His peace be all around you. May all your days be blessed
and fill with Happiness and Love.
Let us continue to work in the spirit of cooperation, peace, love, and unity to
make our organization the greatest, because, in Unity there is strength.
