INTRODUCTION
Freshwater molluscs are important constituent of aquatic ecosystem. They pIa y a vital
role linking primary consumers to tertiary ones. They are valuable as cheap and in .portant
source of animal protein for human beings besides they can act as vectors for traru.mission
of various diseases in animal communities, livestock and human population. Freshwater
molluscan diversity is estimated to be 5000 species in World (Mavinkurve e t a l., 2004) and
almost 200 species in India (Ramakrishna and Dey, 2007). Many studies were conducted
on freshwater molluscs of India, however, noteworthy contributions were that of Subba
Rao (1989)and Ramakrishna and Dey (2007).Western Ghats is a unique place for (' number
of animals including molluscs with a high level of endemism. Nearly 57 species of freshwater
molluscs are found in Western Ghats of which one third species are endemic (Mavinkurve
e t al., 2004). Nevertheless, a very few studies were conducted in protected areas of
Maharashtra. The present study on freshwater molluscs of Chandoli National Park is a
beginning effort to collect information, which resulted in 7 species under 5 fan iIies of 3
orders. Identification based on the hand book of Ramakrishna and Dey (2007) lollowing
classification system of Vaught (1989).
