A BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF SAMSUNG

Samsung which means “three stars” in Korean was founded on the

1st of March 1938 by the late Byung-chull Lee as a trading

company that specialized in the selling and exporting of dried

Korean fish, vegetables and fruits to China now knowns as the

People’s Republic of China. Byung-Chull Lee who was from a

wealthy landowning family, gradually expanded his business

across a wide range of industries. Despite the brief

2

unsurprising difficulties during the Korean War between South

and North Korea which began in 1950 and ended in 1953 and the

sudden death of Byung-Chull Lee on the 19th of November 1987.

Samsung manage to develop itself through the leadership of

Byung-Chull Lee’s son Kun-Kee Lee, despite the separation of

Shinsegae Group; CJ Group and Hansol Group, into the

multinational conglomerate it currently is today. (Samsung,
