Archer entered Washburn Law School at age 38. Six months prior to graduation he was asked by Washburn University President Stoffer and Law School Dean Antrim Hambleton to take Hambleton's position as dean upon his graduation. With President Stoffer's per- mission, Archer first established himself in the Topeka firm of Allen, Ascough and Archer and took a graduate course in law at Northwestern University before taking the position of Dean. In the summer of 1948, Archer left Topeka to accept the position of Executive Director and General Counsel of Americans United for Separation of Church and State with head- quarters in Washington, D.C., a position he held until his retirement in 1976. The Archers celebrated their 68 th wedding anniversary on June 16, 1996. The Hon. Dale E. Saffels '49 , Topeka, Kan., is the subject of a book by Robert Richmond, a Kansas historian and author. The biography is titled The Honorable Dale Emerson Saffels, Senior U.S. District Judge. The book, published by Mennonite Press, records his journey from a lawyer in Garden City through a number of land- mark cases that came out of his court. 194=05 Dr. Glenn L Archer '46, Silver Spring, Md., Dean of Washburn Law School from 1947-48, celebrated his 90th birthday March 29. Archer entered Washburn Law School at age 38. Six months prior to graduation he was asked by Washburn University President Stoffer and Law School Dean Antrim Hambleton to take Hambleton's position as dean upon his graduation. With President Stoffer's per­mission, Archer first established himself in the Topeka firm of Allen, Ascough and Archer and took a graduate course in law at Northwestern University before taking the position of Dean. Marvin W. Maydew '69

Marvin W. Maydew '69, Topeka, Kan., has become Of Counsel to the law firm of Morris, Laing, Evans , Brock &: Kennedy, Chartered. He practices from the Topeka office of the Wichita based law firm. Maydew, admitted to the bar in 1969, is licensed to practice before the u.s. Tax Court. He will continue to practice pri­marily in estate and tax planning. Maydew, also a CPA, is a past president of the Kansas Society of CPAs (KSCPA), past chair of the Educational Foundation of KSCPA, past chair of the Kansas Board of Accountancy, past Kansas member of the AI CPA Council, and is presently a mem­ber of the board of the Information Network of Kansas. Maydew is an adjunct professor of law at Washburn Law School, teaching Law and Accounting.

James M. Milliken '69, St. Francis, Kan., is again the Cheyenne County attorney, having served in that position from 1970-1978. His new associate is daughter Kari Milliken '96.

1970s Robert G. Frey '70, Wichita, Kan., was appointed to the state Board of Tax Appeals. His term will expire in January 2000. Frey served ten years in the House of Representatives, 1975-85, and four years in the Senate, 1985-89. He was chair of both the House and Senate judiciary committees and was a member of the Tax committees in both bodies. He has prac­ticed law in Wichita and lobbied since leaVing the legislature.

Russell A. LaVigne,Jr. '70, Butte, Mont., is founder and executive director of the Peoples Law Center. The Center is a non­profit corporation which provides legal assistance to low-income persons. The new program was started because of feder­al cuts to legal services. The Center fills the gap between cases which Montana Legal Services and private attorneys can­not handle.

LAWSCHOOL CLASS ACTIONS William "Bill" Daley '74, assistant gener­al counsel for the Southwest Area, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), of Fort Worth, Tex., was presented The leigh Curry Award this year for his work to assure assistance to the employees and families who suf­fered as a result of the bombing of the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, for his assistance in several major litigation cases involving civil rights issues in Dallas and East Texas, and in the HUD take over of the Housing Authority of New Orleans. Earlier this year Daley had received the Secretary's Distinguished Service Award, HUD's highest award, from HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros.

Mrs. Helen St. John, left, widow of Harry H. St. JohnJr. '34 and mother of Hayden B. St. John '70, and Mrs. Jun e Windscheffel, widow of Arno Windscheffel '34, braved an unseasonable eight-inch snow storm to visit with faculty in the Kansas Room October 22, 1996. Mrs. Windscheffel was the chair of the Kansas Room Committee that, in 1992, garnered donations of furnish­ings, including law books, for the room. Mrs. St. John was a member of the Committee, as were Mrs. Clayton "Tommy" Davis '29, Mrs. Everett E. Steerman '27, and Mrs. Ruth Marie Fromme (widow of Justice Alexander M. Fromme '39). The painting of sunflowers in the background was donated to the Kansas Room by William A. Buzick Jr. '50.

William L. Schnatterly '34 of Seattle, Washington, died in February 1996. He received Washburn University's Distinguished Service Award in 1974. After law school, he earned his CPA and did tax work for Topeka law firms , then took a job with a major accounting firm in Chicago that later transferred him to Seattle. He served on the Estate Planning Council of Seattle, was director and president of The Seattle Foundation - a community trust , and served on the Chief Seattle Council of Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by wife Louise, four children and nine grand­children.

Robert H. Cobean '35 of Wellington, Kan. , died August 17, 1996. He was 85. He was the Sumner County Probate Judge from 1939 -1943 , and Sumner County Attorney from 1943-49. In 1990, Mr. Cobean was inducted into the Washburn University Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Washburn Law School Association from 1969-1973, served on the boards of trustees of SL Luke's Hospital and of Wesley Medical Center, and was a past district governor of Rotary International , and a former member of the Boy Scout Commission.

He was a member of the Kansas Judicial Council for 44 years having been appointed in 1947. He served as chair of the Juvenile Code AdviSOry Committee, the Care and Treatment AdviSOry Committee, and the Probate Law Advisory Committee, which he served from 1966 until his retire­ment in 1991. During that time, under his direction, the committees drafted the Simplified Estates Act, the Informal Administration Act, the Juvenile Offenders Code, the Code for Care of Children, the Care and Treatment Act, the Guardianship

and Conservatorship Act, and numerous revisions and amendments of existing pro­bate statutes. He was also responsible for the preparation of the January 1966 and June 1974 Judicial Council Bulletins which contained all the forms necessary to process most probate proceedings. He wrote several articles for The Journal of the Kansas Bar Association on many of the subjects consid­ered by the CounciL

In 1992, the Kansas Legislature, in a joint resolution of the House and the Senate, congratulated and commended Mr. Co bean for his service to the State of Kansas as a member of the Kansas Judicial CounciL In 1993, he was presented the Kansas Supreme Court Justice Award for his distin­guished contributions to the improvement of justice.

He is survived by two children and grandchildren.

John F.Jones '35 of Beemer, Neb., died April 16, 1996. He was a 1931 undergradu­ate of Washburn University.

James A. McClain '41 of Cartersville, Ga., died June 3, 1996. He graduated from FL Scott, Kan. Junior College and Washburn University. He was an officer in the US Navy during World War 11. He was head legal counsel for the Army Corps of Engineers when he retired. Survivors include four sons.

Mary Louise Corbett '47 of Topeka, Kan., died July 5, 1996. She was 73. She was an undergraduate of Washburn University. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution , Topeka Assn. of Retarded Citizens, Topeka Junior League, and the Kansas Bar Assn. She is survived by her husband Robert Corbett '49, and three children.

LAW SCHOOL IN MEMORIAM

Rae Ellis Batt '50 of Estes Park, Colo., and formerly of Kinsley, Kan., died September 2,1996. He was 71 . Mr. Batt had practiced law in Kinsley for 43 years (1950-1993). He was the Edwards County Attorney for ten years and was a volunteer fireman. After a stint with the US Naval Air Corps as an aviator, he graduated from Wichita University, then Washburn Law SchooL He had been a member of the Washburn Law School Board of Governors and served as its preSident in 1980. He also served as presi­dent of the Edwards County Bar Association, and as a member of the Board of Deacons of the Kinsley Congregational Church. He had been a summer resident of Estes Park since 1949 and he moved there in 1994. Survivors include wife Marianna, three daughters including Beverly Byrne '86, and two granddaughters. The family suggests memorial gifts be sent to the Washburn Law School Foundation.

Frank A. Bien '50 of Topeka, Kan. , died July 23, 1996. He was 79. He was legal counsel for the Kansas League of Municipalities from 1968 -1986, when he retired . He also served as staff liaison to the City Attorneys Association of Kansas from 1977 to 1986, and he had been its co­founder and executive secretary. For eight years, he taught Municipal Law as an adjunct professor at Washburn Law SchooL Prior to Joining the League, he was a claims attorney for Hartford Insurance Co. and preceding that he had been a revenue agent for the US Treasury Department, an assis­tant librarian at the State Law Library, and a research attorney in the Kansas Revisor of Statutes Office. He graduated from Washburn University in 1949. He served in World War II as a radio operator in B-17 and B-24 aircraft in the Army Air Corps. Survivors include his wife Vi, son Gregory

John E. Redmon '58 of Stanley, Kan. , died September 16,1996. He was the Brown County Attorney for six years, had served as vice president of Inn Operations for Holiday Inn at its Topeka headquarters, and the past 10 years owned Dealers' Choice Truck Away, Inc. He was a graduate of Baker University. Survivors include his wife Patricia , a son and two stepsons and a step­daughter, and grandchildren.

Nancy Jean Davis '82 of Columbus, Ohio, died June 9,1996. She was 55. She was the original and current Administrator of Nursing and Patient Care Services at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital &. Research Institute at Ohio State University. She was also an adjunct assistant professor in the OSU College of Nursing. She earned an AA in Nursing from Brooklyn College and a B.S. degree from Kansas State University. She was formerly director of Nursing Services at Saint Mary Hospital in Manhattan, Kan. She was a member of The Hastings Center and Society of Law and Medicine, the Oncology Nursing Society, American Assn. of University Professors, and the OSU Assn. of Faculty and Professional Women. She lectured throughout the coun­try on nursing and the law and medical-legal ethics. She is survived by her husband Al Davis and two children.

Bernal "Bert" D. Cantwell '83 of Edwardsville, Kan., died July 16, 1996, while vacationing in Ireland. He was 64. He was superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol from 1983-87 and from 1990-92. He was an attorney with the McDowell , Rice and Smith firm from 1987-91, and served as one of the original five commissioners

appointed to the Kansas Racing Commission from 1987-90. Immediately after law school he worked for Tilton, Dillon and Beck in Topeka. Mr. Cantwell had been a barber, later earning bachelor's and master's degrees from Wichita State University, the latter in administration of justice. He was sheriff of Wyandotte County from 1973-77 and in 1977 he was named U.S. Marshal for Kansas by President Jimmy Carter. He was Gov. John Carlin's liaison officer to the Kansas Senate for two legislative sessions. He was a past president of the Kansas Sheriffs Association, past director of the National Sheriffs Association, and past chair of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission. He was a member of Leadership 2000. He was past president of the Kansas City Chapter of Jaycees, state vice president of the Kansas State Jaycees, inter­national director of the Kansas Jaycees, and national director of the U.S. Jaycees. He was president and CEO of the Kansas City, Kan. Area Chamber of Commerce and a member and legal adviser of the Kansas Assn . of Chiefs of Police . In 1990 he was the Democratic Party nominee [or Kansas Attorney General. He had served two years in the U.S. Army including a stint in Korea. Survivors include his wife Sandra, three chil­dren, three step-children, grandchildren, and his mother.

George A. Wheat '68 of Plano, Tex., died May 24, 1996, of leukemia. He was vice president for insurance and risk manage­ment for Greyhound Lines, Inc., Dallas , Tex. He had been director of insurance and claims for Motor Coach Industries International in Phoenix from 1991-1995. From 1988-91 , Mr. Wheat was director of claims for Phoenix-based Dial Corp. From 1972-1987, he was the senior litigation attorney for Greyhound Corporation,

becoming the associate general counsel when the company was sold to Greyhound Lines, Inc. He was a 1966 graduate of Wichita State University. Survivors include his wife Barbara and three children.

Robert S. Allen '91 of Wichita , Kan. , died July 29, 1996. He was 64. He received his B.S. degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Mass. , in chemical engineering in 1956. This June he was awarded the Kansas Bar Association's pro bono certificate for handling more than 80 cases in the last five years for the legal clinic operated for indi­gent people by the Brookside Methodist Church in Wichita. He was a member of KTLA, ATLA, Wichita Bar Assn., KBA, ABA, and the Wichita Engineering SOCiety, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is survived by his wife Norma.
