From the Desk of Fr. Sebastian,

Dear Friends,

This Sunday, we celebrate the feast of the Ascension of our Lord, the entry of Jesus into heaven. The Ascension of Jesus signifies two important events in the history of salvation. It marks the completion of Jesus’ mission on earth and it inaugurates the beginning of the Disciples’ mission.

Jesus completed His mission (mission of restoration) by His sacrifice on the cross and He prepared His disciples for the Holy Spirit and for their future mission during the post resurrection period. Thus the Ascension symbolizes the fulfillment of His mission. Through the incarnation God entered into the human dimension and by Ascension humanity entered into the divine domain. Ascension completed the mission of incarnation.

And more importantly, the Ascension is an invitation for us to take up the responsibility of the Church as adult disciples. For the apostles, their training period was over and the time had arrived for the beginning of this mission. So the Angel said to the disciples who were shocked and worried by the absence of the physical presence of Jesus: “Why are you standing, looking up to heaven, go and do what Jesus commanded to do. Go and be His witnesses” (Acts 1: 6-11). In other words, instead of waiting for God to do everything for us, we do everything for God.

It is a call to represent Jesus in our time. Grow from followers of Jesus to leaders of ministry. Remember the words of St. Theresa of Avila: Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.”

How am I the hands and feet of Jesus today...? Mission/ministry is given to every baptized Christian. In Christianity no one is a spectator; everybody is a participant. We have so many ministries in our parish. There are Liturgical ministries, Hospitality ministry, Peace and justice ministry, Eucharistic ministry to the sick, Bereavement ministry, Religious education ministry, Confirmation and Youth ministry, Altar society, Family ministry, Evangelization ministry and many more. Consider joining one of them according to your ability and time or start a new.... Call the office and give your name if the spirit is prompting you. There are two ways of spreading light; to be a candle, or the mirror that reflects it (Edith Wharton).

May God bless you.

Pentecost Sunday

Next Sunday, we celebrate the Feast of the Pentecost. It marks the birthday of the Church. Pentecost is also the Feast of Human Solidarity. We invite

you to wear red to the Holy Mass. Let us prepare for this all important Feast of the Holy Spirit by praying the following prayer to the Holy Spirit every day.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

God the Father sent his Holy Spirit upon the disciples on the day of Pentecost and transformed them as evangelizers of the Good news of salvation. God of the universe,

breathe on us with the same Spirit and kindle our hearts with Divine Love.

Lord of the Universe by the light of the Holy spirit enlighten our ways and with the gifts of the Holy Spirit empower us to follow your Son Jesus courageously. Let your face shine upon us

and let us be your presence in the world.

Grant us Lord a new heart, that – like the first Christians we may be one heart and one mind. Give us the strength to love our neighbors and treat them as we would want to be

treated. Grant us the discipline to reject evil, to follow your plan and to strive for holiness. Be our Guide, our Counselor, and our Consoler. Amen.

May is Foster Care

Awareness Month!

Every child deserves a loving family. We are all adopted sons and

daughters of God, and we know that the family is the basic building block of society. Los Angeles County has more

than 38,000 children in foster care. These foster children and

youth need the love of a family to support them and nurture them to their full potential. We can all do our part to help children in foster care. Visit our

MASS INTENTIONS What You Need To Know About Poison

It’s a great time to review your safety measures for

medicines, cleaning supplies, and other potentially

dangerous items in your home. Store these items up

high, out of your child’s reach, or locked in a childproof

place. Parents should keep the number for the Poison

Control hotline handy: 1-800-222-1222. Experts can

give you immediate information about how to treat your

child and what signs to watch for. They can tell you if

you need to head to the emergency room or if you can

take steps at home. For more information, request a

copy of the VIRTUS article “What you need to know

about poison” at lacatholics.org/did-you-know.
