.Learning New WordsTake a look at Chapter 10 to familiarize yourself with the topics covered. Look for all
the highlighted words in dark print. These are the vocabulary words. Write the words
on a sheet of paper, then write the meaning next to each word.
10.1 Searching Intersections
Words and Ideaspower lines: Power lines are heavy electrical wires that carry
electrical power to homes and businesses in the community.
point of no return: When you drive toward an intersection, this is the
point beyond which you can no longer stop safely.
safety stop: This is a stop made with your front bumper even with the curb
line, so you can search an intersection 90 degrees in both directions.
Figure It Out: IntersectionsHow can you tell that you are approaching an intersection? Look at
the pictures below. For each picture, circle the items that indicate you are near an
intersection. Write the names of these items in the space provided under each picture.
Use Drive Right page 184 if you need help.

10.2 Determining Right of Way and Judging Gaps
Words and Ideasyield: This is letting others go first.
emergency vehicles: These are vehicles that carry people and equipment to
help in an emergency. An ambulance is an emergency vehicle. It carries
people and medical equipment to help people who are sick or injured. A
fire truck is an emergency vehicle that carries fire fighters and equipment
to fires.
gap: A gap is the space between objects. In driving it is the distance between
vehicles.
joining traffic: Turning right or left into lanes where other vehicles are traveling
is called joining traffic.
right of way: This means being allowed to use a certain part of the roadway first.

.10.3 Controlled Intersections
Words and Ideascontrolled intersection: A controlled intersection has traffic signals or signs to direct
traffic.
Unit 3 Controlling Your Vehicle Chapter 10 Negotiating Intersections 65
through street: A street without stop signs, yield signs, or traffic signals is a through
street. Drivers on the through street usually can go through an intersection
without stopping.
stale green light: State means old. A stale green light is a traffic light that has been
green for a long time.
fresh green light: Fresh means new. A fresh green light is a traffic light that has just
turned from red to green.
protected left turn: Protect means to keep safe from danger. Some traffic signals
protect a driver making a left turn with special signals.
unprotected left turn: An unprotected left turn is made without a special left turn
light.
Left Turns
Protected
• Special green arrow or light
tells you when to turn.
• Other traffic stops while
you turn.
Unprotected
• There is no special light or arrow.
• You must yield to oncoming traffic.

delayed green light: Sometimes one side of an intersection has a green light while
the light for the oncoming traffic remains red.
10.4 Uncontrolled Intersections
Words and Ideasuncontrolled intersections: These are intersections that have no signs or signals to
regulate traffic.
What to Do at an Uncontrolled Intersection
• Slow down.
• Check for approaching traffic.
• Look for other roadway users near the intersection.
• Check the left and the right side of the intersection.
• Check your rearview mirror.
• Stop, if necessary.

update: To update is to add new information or make corrections.
location: Your location is the place where you are; your position.
Think About It: Uncontrolled Intersections
Read the statements below, then circle the letter next to the best answer.
1. You approach an uncontrolled intersection. You are driving car number 1 in the
picture. Car number 2 is approaching the intersection at the same time.
a. You assume you have the right of way and keep driving.
b. You drive defensively. You stop at the intersection and give the other car the
right of way.
2. You approach an empty, uncontrolled intersection. You are driving car number 3.
You don’t see any cars or other roadway users.
a. You slow down as you get closer to the intersection. You continue looking for
other roadway users.
b. You continue driving at the same speed because the intersection is empty.
3. You are driving car number 3. As you approach an uncontrolled intersection, you
see a pedestrian out of the corner of your eye.
a. Accelerate to get through the intersection before the pedestrian.
b. Stop, make eye contact, and use a hand signal to communicate to the
pedestrian which one of you will yield.

flashing red lights and/or crossing gates.
crossing gates: These gates prevent vehicles from entering a railroad
crossing when a train is approaching.
passive railroad crossing: A passive railroad crossing does not have
flashing red lights or crossing gates.
crossbuck: Found in rural areas, this is a large, white X-shaped sign
that is located beside passive railroad crossings.

.Think About ItRead the statements below, then circle the letter next to the best answer.

a. you should always slow down, even if you don’t see a train.
b. you should slow down only if you see a train.
2. After a train has passed,
a. drive across the tracks as quickly as possible.
b. check the crossing to see if another train is approaching.
10.6 Roundabouts
Words and Ideasroundabout: A roundabout is where several intersections meet and form a circle.
Think About ItWrite True or False for each statement in the space provided.
1. Roundabouts are safer and more efficient than intersections with traffic
signals.
2. Vehicles traveling in a roundabout must yield the right of way to
newcomers.
3. Never stop in a traffic circle.
4. Do not pass or change lanes except to merge into the right lane to
exit.
