Eighty percent subsidy will be given to farmers on this. Now the date of applica-tion of Dhencha seeds has been extended to April 4. After this, the por-tal will close. The government has started a very good scheme forpreparing green manure for the farmers.According to the plan, the farmer has to pay only 20 per cent amountto buy Dhencha seeds. The government will pay the remaining 80per cent of the seed price. Farmers will get this grant only on maxi-mum 10 acres of land. In order to avail the benefits of this scheme, itis mandatory for the farmer to be registered on My Crop My Detailsportal.Giving information, DC said that application for the scheme can bemade on the website www. agriharyana.org. It is mandatory to haveAadhaar card, voter card or Kisan credit card for application. Dhen-cha sowing is very beneficial for improving soil health and fertility ofland will also increase. For information regarding availing the benefitsof the scheme, the toll free number 1800-180-2117 or the Deputy Director Agriculture Office can be contacted.Deputy Director of Agriculture Dr. Aditya Dabas said that Dhenchacrop works as a good green manure at low cost. This gives sufficientamount of nitrogen to the soil. Increasing organic matter in the soilwith green manure increases soil and water conservation and gettingbalanced amount of nutrients increases soil fertility. He said that un-der the poison-free farming campaign, farmers should use green ma-nure so that there is no adverse effect on health.

Dumb it downIs it better to be smart or to be clever? According to

Statista, the current number of smartphone users inthe world today is 6.648 billion. This means 83.72 per

cent of the global population owns a smartphone. Thesephones bring the world into the palm of one’s hand withaccess to internet and applications that allow people toperform a variety of functions, from navigating the cityto banking and even monitoring one’s health. But is be-ing smart always clever? Smartphones have emerged asone of the biggest threats to privacy, tracking and dis-closing personal data to tech giants, which are eager tocash in on the information for profit. That is not all. Thesmarter the phone, the worse its battery backup, ensur-ing that people are often unable to use their phones tomake calls during emergencies, thereby defeating theoriginal purpose of mobile phones. This is not to men-tion their fragility. Feature phones — the ones that al-lowed users to make calls and shoot off a text messageonly — were durable; there are tales of the proverbial‘dumbphone’ stopping bullets whereas most smart-phones cannot survive even a hard knock.

In fact, buying a dumbphone could well be a smartidea. Google searches for dumbphones jumped by 89 percent between 2018 and 2021 and global purchases hitone billion units last year, compared to worldwide salesof 1.4 billion smartphones. Thanks to their low cost, fea-ture phones have remained popular in the developingworld. In sub-Saharan Africa, smartphones only over-took feature phones sales in the last two years and Indiastill has at least 320 million feature phone users. It is le-gitimate to ask whether it is possible to survive in thetwenty-first century without a smartphone. The Covid-19 pandemic made smartphones even more indispensa-ble than they were before. The smartphone enables arange of tasks by minimizing human contact in thesecontagious times. But the feature phone is also catchingup with technology. The Reserve Bank of India recentlylaunched a programme that will allow feature phoneusers to make digital payments. While it might be pre-mature to pronounce the end of humanity’s love affairwith the smartphone, the introduction of further inno-vations on feature phones may insert an element of com-petition between the two warring brothers. The featurephone, after all, has one distinct advantage: a low price. That may turn the tide in some markets. Perhaps this isalso a time to reflect on the tyranny of ‘smartness’. Fromphones to cities to children, nearly every entity is beinggoaded to become smart. But is that always a prudent —smart — decision? India’s smart cities — planned spacesmeant to improve infrastructure and services to makecities more liveable, economically vibrant, and environ-mentally sustainable — lack the element of community,a shared ethos, that keeps city spaces alive.

Researchers at MIT havedeveloped a new kindof membrane to sepa-

rate gases with roughly 1/10the energy use and emissions.

The study was publishedin the journal, 'Science'.

Industrial processes forchemical separations, includ-ing natural gas purificationand the production of oxygenand nitrogen for medical or in-dustrial uses, are collectivelyresponsible for about 15 percent of the world's energy use. They also contribute a corre-sponding amount to theworld's greenhouse gas emis-sions.

Using membranes for theseparation of chemicals isknown to be much more effi-cient than processes such asdistillation or absorption, butthere has always been a trade-off between permeability --how fast gases can penetratethrough the material -- and se-lectivity -- the ability to let thedesired molecules passthrough while blocking allothers.

The new family of mem-brane materials, based on "hy-drocarbon ladder" polymers, overcomes that trade-off, pro-viding both high permeabilityand extremely good selectivi-ty, the researchers said. YanXia, an associate professor ofchemistry at Stanford;Zachary Smith, an assistantprofessor of chemical engi-

neering at MIT; Ingo Pinnau,a professor at King AbdullahUniversity of Science andTechnology, and five others.

Gas separation is an im-portant and widespread indus-trial process whose uses in-clude removing impuritiesand undesired compoundsfrom natural gas or biogas, separating oxygen and nitro-gen from the air for medicaland industrial purposes, sepa-rating carbon dioxide fromother gases for carbon cap-ture, and producing hydrogenfor use as a carbon-free trans-portation fuel.

The new ladder polymermembranes showed promisefor drastically improving theperformance of such separa-tion processes. For example,

separating carbon dioxidefrom methane, these newmembranes have five timesthe selectivity and 100 timesthe permeability of existingcellulosic membranes for thatpurpose. Similarly, they are100 times more permeableand three times as selectivefor separating hydrogen gasfrom methane.

The new type of poly-mers, developed over the lastseveral years by the Xia lab, were referred to as ladderpolymers because they areformed from double strandsconnected by rung-like bonds, and these linkages provide ahigh degree of rigidity andstability to the polymer mate-rial. These ladder polymersare synthesized via efficient

and selective chemistry theXia lab developed calledCANAL, an acronym for cat-alytic arene-norbornene annu-lation, which stitches readilyavailable chemicals into lad-der structures with hundredsor even thousands of rungs.

The polymers were syn-thesized in a solution, wherethey form rigid and kinkedribbon-like strands that caneasily be made into a thinsheet with sub-nanometre-scale pores by using industri-ally available polymer castingprocesses.

The sizes of the resultingpores can be tuned through thechoice of the specific hydro-carbon starting compounds."This chemistry and choice ofchemical building blocks al-lowed us to make very rigidladder polymers with differentconfigurations," Xia said.

To apply the CANALpolymers as selective mem-branes, the collaborationmade use of Xia's expertise inpolymers and Smith's spe-cialization in membrane re-search. Holden Lai, a formerStanford doctoral student, carried out much of the de-velopment and exploration ofhow their structures impactgas permeation properties. "Ittook us eight years from de-veloping the new chemistryto finding the right polymerstructures that bestow thehigh separation perform-

ance," Xia said. The Xia lab spent the past

several years varying thestructures of CANAL poly-mers to understand how theirstructures affect their separa-tion performance. Surprising-ly, they found that adding ad-ditional kinks to their originalCANAL polymers signifi-cantly improved the mechan-ical robustness of their mem-branes and boosted their se-lectivity for molecules ofsimilar sizes, such as oxygenand nitrogen gases, withoutlosing permeability of themore permeable gas.

The selectivity actuallyimproves as the materialages. The combination ofhigh selectivity and high per-meability makes these mate-rials outperform all otherpolymer materials in manygas separations, the re-searchers said. Today, 15 percent of global energy usegoes into chemical separa-tions, and these separationprocesses are "often based oncentury-old technologies,"Smith said. "They work well, but they have an enormouscarbon footprint and con-sume massive amounts of en-ergy. The key challenge to-day is trying to replace thesenon-sustainable processes. Most of these processes re-quire high temperatures forboiling and reboiling solu-tions, and these often are the

hardest processes to electrify,he added.

For the separation of oxy-gen and nitrogen from the air,the two molecules only differin size by about 0.18angstroms (ten-billionths of ameter), he said. To make a fil-ter capable of separatingthem efficiently 'is incrediblydifficult to do without de-creasing throughput'.

"But the new ladder poly-mers, when manufacturedinto membranes produce tinypores that achieve high selec-tivity," he said.

"In some cases, 10 oxy-gen molecules permeate forevery nitrogen, despite the ra-zor-thin sieve needed to ac-cess this type of size selectiv-ity. These new membranematerials have 'the highestcombination of permeabilityand selectivity of all knownpolymeric materials for manyapplications,' Smith said.

"Because CANAL poly-mers are strong and ductile, and because they are solublein certain solvents, they couldbe scaled for industrial de-ployment within a fewyears," he added. An MITspinoff company called Os-moses, led by authors of thisstudy, recently won the MIT$100K entrepreneurshipcompetition and has beenpartly funded by The Engineto commercialize the technol-ogy.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) isdelaying the retirement age of its gov-ernment employees as the draconian

one-child policy bears its long-term effects inthe form of an ageing population accompa-nied by an increased state expenditure on so-cial security pensions, a report said on Fri-day.

From 1st March, the Communist Party ofChina (CCP) started im-plementing the delayedretirement policy in orderto solve the problem ofinsufficient age-old so-cial security pensionfunds, Inside Over re-ported.

The measure came asa result of last year's"14th Five-Year Plan forNational Aging Devel-opment and Elderly CareService System" issuedby the State Council ofthe Communist Party of China on Decem-ber 30. "The only reason for it is that thereis no money now," said Feng Chongyi, aprofessor at the University of TechnologySydney and an expert on China in an inter-view with the Epoch Times, adding that,"the local governments are in short supplyand this hole cannot be filled."

The policy was in work for a long timesince 2013 but it was delayed because ofstrong resentment among the labour force, according to the Chinese digital platformTencent.com. Feng also pointed out that theCCP's cruel family planning has destroyed

the natural population law, which not onlycaused the imbalance of the male and fe-male population in China but also greatlyaffected the supply of labour force andturned China into an ageing society, the re-port said. An added problem for the CCP isthat the new measure is set to leave tens ofmillions of graduates every year, withnowhere to go, as the old can't retire, and

the young have nowhere to go. "The de-layed retirement policy reflects that socialwelfare expenditures related to retirementand old age have become a heavy burden onthe central government's financial expendi-ture, so it delays retirement to minimizethis, its pay pressure," said Wu Jialong, aTaiwanese economist.

He added that delaying retirement is thelast resort for the Central Committee of theCommunist Party of China to deal with fi-nancial pressures, also warning that civilunrest will ensue in the future because of fi-nancial pressures.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan loses anotherally before crucial no-confidence voteLess than an hour be-

fore Imran Khan'spower show in Islam-

abad, the Pakistan PrimeMinister has lost JamhooriWatan Party (JWP) chiefShahzain Bugti -- an allywho announced his separa-tion from the government, saying that he will vote infavour of the no-confidencemotion against the coun-try's PM.

Shahzain Bugti, whowas serving as the ImranKhan's Special Assistant onReconciliation and Harmo-ny in Balochistan resignedfrom his post after a meet-ing with Pakistan PeoplesParty (PPP) ChairpersonBilawal Bhutto-Zardari,The Express Tribune news-paper reported.

Bugti announced thathe would support the oppo-sition in the wake of the no-confidence motion submit-ted against Imran Khan.Imran Khan's party Pak-istan Tehreek-e-Insaf set toface a no-trust motion in theNational Assembly. Thesession is called on March28. The no-confidence mo-tion against the ImranKhan-led government wassubmitted by the Opposi-tion on March 8 after the

PPP's long march in Islam-abad. The Opposition isconfident that its motionwould be carried as manyPTI lawmakers have comeout in the open against PMImran Khan.

As the crucial no-confi-dence motion inches closerand uncertainty continuesto shroud political al-liances, at least 50 ministersbelonging to the ruling par-ty have gone 'missing', Tri-bune reported citingsources. The Pakistani Na-tional Assembly has a totalstrength of 342 members, with the majority mark be-ing 172. The PTI led coali-tion was formed with thesupport of 179 members, with Imran Khan's PTI hav-ing 155 members, and four

major allies MuttahidaQaumi Movement-Pakistan(MQM-P), Pakistan Mus-lim League-Quaid (PML-Q), Balochistan Awami Par-ty (BAP) and Grand Demo-cratic Alliance (GDA) hav-ing seven, five, five andthree members respectively.

Imran Khan's situationis precarious given thatthree of the four allies, thatis, MQM-P, PML-Q andBAP have stated their sup-port to the Opposition's no-confidence motion and saidthat they will vote accord-ingly. In a last-ditch at-tempt, Imran Khan recentlydispatched a team of seniorPTI leaders to meet the al-lies and assured them thattheir reservations would beaddressed.

Researchers have found that regular physicalactivity has nearly doubled the cardiovas-cular benefits in individuals with depres-

sion or anxiety, compared to those without thesediagnoses. The study was published in the journal'Cardiology'.

The research findings added to mounting ev-idence that exercise improves cardiovascularhealth by helping to activate parts of the brain thatcounteract stress. Overall, the study found thatpeople who achieved the recommended amountof physical activity per week were 17 per cent lesslikely to suffer a major adverse cardiovascularevent than those who exercised less.

These benefits were significantly greater inthose with anxiety or depression, who had a 22per cent risk reduction versus a 10 per cent risk re-duction in those without either condition.

"The effect of physical activity on the brain'sstress response may be particularly relevant inthose with stress-related psychiatric conditions,"said Hadil Zureigat, MD, postdoctoral clinical re-

search fellow at Massachusetts General Hospitaland the study's lead author. "This is not to suggestthat exercise is only effective in those with de-pression or anxiety, but we found that these pa-tients seem to derive a greater cardiovascular ben-efit from physical activity," he added.

Rates of both depression and anxietyhave risen during the COVID-19 pan-demic, and heart disease remains theleading cause of death in the U.S. Thestudy findings underscored the impor-tant role of exercise in maintaining hearthealth and reducing stress, according tothe researchers.

For the study, researchers analyzedthe health records of more than 50,000patients in the Massachusetts GeneralBrigham Biobank database. Just over4,000 of the patients had suffered a ma-jor adverse cardiovascular event, whichincluded experiencing a heart attack, having chest pain caused by a blocked

artery or undergoing a procedure to open ablocked artery in the heart. Researchers first as-sessed the rates of major coronary events amongpatients who reported in a questionnaire that theyexercise at least 500 metabolic equivalents(MET) minutes per week--aligning with the ACC

and American Heart Association primary preven-tion guideline recommendation of at least 150minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week--with those who exercise less. MET-minutes are aunit of exercise that represents the amount of en-ergy expended during various activities. Theanalysis revealed that people who got at least 500MET minutes or more per week were 17 per centless likely to suffer an adverse cardiovascularevent. Then, they analyzed how this patternplayed out among patients who had a diagnosis ofdepression or anxiety compared with those whodid not have depression or anxiety. This secondanalysis revealed that patients with depression de-rived more than double the benefit from exercisein terms of reduced cardiovascular risk comparedwith people who did not have depression. A sim-ilar benefit of exercise was found for patients withanxiety. The research expanded upon previousstudies by the research team that used brain im-aging to determine how exercise improves car-diovascular health by helping to keep the brain's

stress response in check. Individuals with depres-sion or anxiety have higher stress-related neuralactivity and a higher risk of cardiovascular dis-ease.

"When one thinks about physical activity de-creasing cardiovascular risk, one doesn't usuallythink of the brain," Zureigat said.

"Our research emphasizes the importance ofthe stress-related neural mechanisms by whichphysical activity acts to reduce cardiovascularrisk," he added. Even though the study used 500MET minutes as a cutoff for the analysis, re-searchers noted that previous studies show peoplecan reduce their heart disease risk even if they donot achieve the recommended amount of physicalactivity. Even a little bit of regular physical activ-ity can make a difference in terms of cardiovas-cular risk. "Any amount of exercise is helpful, particularly for those with depression or anxiety,"Zureigat said. "Not only will physical activityhelp them feel better, but they will also potentlyreduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.
