CELEBRATING WOMEN ON THE GO

GoAir.in MARCH 2019 3

Dear Go-getterA warm welcome aboard!

The year 2019 started with a bang for the Indian aviation industry. The Indian aviation sector grew by 9.1 per cent in January 2019 as against last year. Domestic airlines carried 125.08 lakh passengers during January 2019 as compared to 114.65 lakh during the same period last year.

GoAir has recorded the best On-Time Performance (OTP) of 75.9 per cent for January 2019 despite challenging weather conditions, according to the

month in which GoAir has achieved this feat. This performance is because of every member of the GoAir family, who has worked diligently to ensure that customers have an experience that is the best in class.

GoAir now connects to the Middle East with Muscat and Abu Dhabi as its international destinations effective February 28 and March 1 respectively.

relationships with the United Arab Emirates and Oman. GoAir has another milestone to celebrate. We also have the least customer

complaints for January. Data for January 2019 shows that GoAir only had 0.3 complaints per 10,000 passengers. This wouldn’t have been possible without you, dear Smart Flyers, who have trusted us time and again.

The Pulwama incident in which at least 41 army men were killed shook India’s collective morale. GoAir strongly condemns this cowardly act of terrorism. Since the inception, we have been offering special fares to all servicemen, and many of our pilots, too, are ex-servicemen.

February 23-24, 2019. The festival saw millennials sway to foot-tapping electronic dance music.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, I take this opportunity to wish all the women Smart Flyers a Happy Women's Day. More than 30 per cent of GoAir’s workforce comprises women who play key roles across the organisation. I value their commitment and thank them for being a part of the GoAir family. Please stay tuned to our website and social media

Best Wishes

This quaint hill station nestled in the arms of the Sahyadris is the perfect break from the noisy city life. Saputara literally means abode of the serpents, and interestingly, tribals of the Dang district worship snakes. Just before Holi, the tribals celebrate the Dang Darbar festival, which features traditional dance, musical instruments and jewellery-laden attires. Green vistas and the tribe's modest cultural heritage make a visit to Saputara complete. For a deeper insight into the Dang way of life, the Saputara Tribal Museum is a perfect starting point. Vansda National Park, Gira Waterfalls, Lake Garden and Sunset Point are other areas you can explore on a relaxed weekend here.

Eat: Most restaurants offer authentic Gujarati fare, from which a thali is a must-try.

Stay: Opt for a cottage, hotel or Gujarat Tourism’s Toran Hill Resort for a comfortable stay.

Do: Get on a cable car for a bird’s-eye view of the entire city or indulge in an exhilarating experience of paragliding on the hillside.

This quaint union territory is best explored by foot. The pretty Bom Jesus Church, the inconspicuous Chapel of Our Lady of Rosary, the

administrative bungalows are worthy reminders of the opulent Portuguese taste. These sights are built inside a fort and take one back to Daman's rich colonial past.

Shrouded in lush greenery, this bridge, with its seven arches, was built during Emperor's Akbar's reign, and makes for a picture-perfect sight. Kochi’s dining scene has witnessed a transformation through the 2000s. It’s a unique journey shaped by locals, Kerala’s

NASI AND MEEThe Nasi and Mee journey began in Koramangala in

Bengaluru before moving to Chennai. Kochi is now the third home for this innovative pan-Asian restaurant

chain that is positioned as a high-energy Asian canteen. The restaurant's menu features signature dishes from the region that regulars keep coming back for. Their dim sum remain hugely popular — for instance, the prawn har gow. Dig into a platter of Thai staples like Nasi goreng or mee goreng, or go for a laksa, a traditional Southeast Asian soup. With Milo being a mainstay in Malaysia, Nasi and Mee embraces this malted drink to create its very own versions such as the Ice Blended Milo or Milo panna cotta, a clever spin on Italy's classic dessert.

EAST INDIES, EIGHTH BASTIONKochi has always been at the heart of the Spice Route. With the

European powers having held court in the city's flourishing spice trade,

the Dutch influence continues to leave an impression in Fort Kochi. This includes the dining space East Indies at the Eighth Bastion, a contemporary hotel that celebrates Kochi’s colonial past. The menu might be compact but it’s fascinating, for it features an interplay between local flavours and Dutch and other Western influences. The must-haves include the chingri macher and the decadent crème brûlée french toast.

THE RICE BOATThe Rice Boat became one of the first restaurants in the state to showcase traditional Kerala cuisine in a fine dining setting. The restaurant is set up in a picturesque luxury boat, and dishes featuring fresh catches of the day are always in the mix. With a range of fish from prawns and pearl spots to mussels and squids, The Rice Boat serves up some of Kerala's most sought-after seafood, think octopus theeyal, which is curried octopus in roasted coconut and tamarind gravy; or their popular chemmeen chuttathu, which comprises baby shrimps grilled in a special marinade. The restaurant also offers a unique fishing experience (for residents at the hotel) where you can watch the fish you ‘hook’, cooked to your specification.

DHE PUTTUThis restaurant is dedicated to Kerala’s quintessential breakfast dish — puttu. At Dhe Puttu, this staple gets a whole new

lease of life and is reimagined as a gourmet experience. It’s puttu all the way here, and in

an array of forms. Their marble and biryani puttus (the prawn version) are scrumptious, and are a big

draw. If you're looking for something more traditional, try their Splendor Thali, which comes with a choice of several delectable curries. However, it is not just about savoury puttus. Their audacious chocolate puttu makes for a perfect ending to the meal.

THAI SOUL, GRAND HYATT KOCHI BOLGATTYOne of the city's recent establishments, the Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty offers stunning backwater views from most of its well-appointed rooms. One of the hotel's culinary diversions is Thai Soul, Kochi’s first Thai restaurant. This poolside restaurant gives Kerala's street food a spin and handpicks the finest ingredients from across the country's regions. The gai hor bai toey — deep-fried chicken in locally sourced pandan leaves — is one of the restaurant’s signature dishes. Do sample their refreshing pomelo salad or make room for one of their fiery curries. End your meal with the traditional tab tim krob (water chestnut rubies in coconut milk) that gets a slight tweak with the addition of jackfruit slivers.

GETAWAY: A must-visit is the Land of Frankincense Museum, which is located in the Dhofar Governorate, a short flight from Muscat. Its capital, Salalah, is a green haven and the Omanis' favourite holiday destination. Dhofar is also the place where the majority of frankincense trees are grown, making it a great place to include in your itinerary.

commemorate Oman’s 20th National Day. By sundown, the memorial is a sight to behold, given how it lights up.

A SOUQ STORYNot far from the memorial is the Muttrah Souq, an old-world indoor marketplace brimming with Omani treats and antiques. Designed much like ancient Middle Eastern markets, it is characterised by narrow alleys and wooden roofs. Interestingly, it’s also called the Market of Darkness (known locally as Souq Al Dhalam) because of the ability

of the shops to block out sunlight during the day. Here, one can shop silverware, khanjars (daggers), Omani clothing, traditional sweets (halwa) and spices. The market is also, of course, overflowing with shops selling frankincense. In Oman, people use frankincense in their homes, offices, restaurants and hotels all year round. Apart from its aroma, it is also known for its therapeutic properties, and can be chewed or dissolved in water as well. The resin is even used to lend a pleasant whiff to clothes. Not only did I purchase a lot of frankincense, but I also bought braziers, receptacles in which incense or frankincense is traditionally burned. These clay burners are called majmars, and they come in a variety of colours and designs.

PERFUME TRAILSAfter a jaunt at the souq, a visit to Amouage Factory is mandatory. While the former has a traditional essence, the latter exudes a rather luxurious vibe. It was established in the year 1983 on an order by Qaboos Bin Said, the Sultan of Oman. Not only does the factory

KINGDOM CULTURE: Frankincense has commanded a long-standing history. According to Omani researcher and historian, Abdul Qadir bin Salim Al Ghassani, Alexander the Great had imported huge amounts of frankincense from the region. King Solomon's throne was also said to be surrounded by frankincense. On the other hand, some manuscripts suggest that upon the death of his wife, Emperor Nero burned nearly a year's worth of frankincense harvest in her honour.

DID YOU KNOW: The Land of Frankincense, a UNESCO-listed site, houses a number of archaeological landmarks relating to ancient frankincense trade in Oman. They are Wadi Dawkah (where frankincense is still harvested), the remnants of Shisr, a caravan oasis, and the ports of Khor Rori and Al-Baleed.

reflect Oman's ancient art of perfume-making, but it also represents it to the global audience. With the brand logo similar to that of the Omani coat of

arms and perfume bottles in the shape of national symbols like the Omani dagger and Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, these fragrances act as perfect souvenirs and gifts. However, it does not just stop at their frankincense — even their oud and musk fragrances are irresistible. And if you want to learn about Omani perfume-making, the factory and visitors centre are a great place to start with.

With the rich aroma of frankincense leaving a trail behind my flight, I have vowed to return for round two of this fragrant tryst with Muscat!

exhibitions. If you’re an art and history enthusiast, your search ends here. It’s not just the exhibits that draw visitors to the Louvre Abu Dhabi but also the building’s spectacular architecture. Built by French architect Jean Nouvel, this masterpiece is designed like a medina (town or city) with flat-roofed buildings. The web-patterned dome allows the sun to filter through, giving it an effect similar to that of sunrays passing through date palm fronds in an oasis. The dome is made from 7,850 individual metal stars of varying sizes arranged in eight layers and appears to be floating from the outside.

Sprawling over 30 acres, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest in the country. Exhibiting breathtakingly beautiful Arab architecture, it has an equally majestic interior and it’s open to visitors for prayers as well as sightseeing. The pools along the mosque’s arcades reflect the many marble columns with inlays of mother of pearl. UNLIMITED ADVENTURES AND CULINARY ESCAPADESNo trip to Abu Dhabi is complete without visiting

CULTURAL DOS AND DON’TS

Abu Dhabi is a lenient country but as a mark of respect for the Middle Eastern culture, it’s ideal to be dressed modestly, especially while visiting holy sites and at the beach. Many Arab women wear what’s called a burkini — an amalgamation of the words burkha and bikini. It’s a full-sleeved catsuit with a balaclava.

The city’s beaches are well-maintained and it’s impolite to litter them.

THE LAND OF ABUNDANCEAbu Dhabi, which means ‘father of the gazelle,’ a name thought to have come about because of the abundance of gazelles in the area, is the largest of the UAE’s seven emirates. The cradle of the early Bronze Age civilisation, it’s a history buff’s paradise. It also offers a variety of experiences for the culture vulture, adrenaline junkie, and leisure traveller.

Abu Dhabi has many beaches and islands where you can unwind and soak in the sun. Offering a panoramic view of the Abu Dhabi skyline, The Corniche is popular with visitors. Other family-friendly options are Saadiyat, Yas and Al Bateen, which come with a range of water sports facilities, and most of them even have a lifeguard on site. They also have restaurants or food stalls for when hunger pangs strike.

Ferrari World. An indoor amusement park, it’s the first ever Ferrari-branded theme park and is most popular for Formula Rossa, the world's fastest roller coaster.

Abu Dhabi has many souqs (markets) that you can scour for souvenirs such as Arabian rugs, dates, Arabic perfumes or incense, spices, gold jewellery, trinkets and more. The Souq in the Central Market area — the same location as that of the city’s first market — has traditional elements such as wood carvings and coloured glass, offering the authentic Arab experience. Other markets include the carpet souq where you can find rugs from Iran and Afghanistan, cushions and mats with Arab patterns, and intricately designed Islamic prayer mats here —

It took 11 years to build the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and that alone is enough to prove the magnificence it commands.

It’s not just one of the world’s largest mosques — over 40,000 worshippers congregate here during

Located on Yas Island, this thrill-inducing theme park has grown to become one of the most favoured entertainment destinations in Abu Dhabi. Housed inside Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is Formula Rossa, a star attraction which boasts a peak speed of 240 kmph (making it one of the world's fastest roller coasters.)

The park's large red roof is shaped to resemble a Ferrari badge. The ride's unique construct seeks inspiration from Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Italy’s iconic racetrack. But it's not just

Formula Rossa that brings in the crowds. There’s Flying Aces that features one of the highest rollercoaster loops in the world, and my personal favourite — Scuderia Challenge, a state-of-the-art

racing simulator. The park is a great all-day destination for a dose of adventure, and also has a wide range of culinary diversions including Mamma Rosella, an award-winning Italian trattoria.

EXPERIENCE LIFE IN THE FAST LANE AT FERRARI WORLD

SMART TIP: If you are also looking for some entertainment, keep an eye out for the number of exciting shows and events hosted by Ferrari World.

SMART TIP: If you want to shop without breaking the bank, then opt for affordable, tailor-made clothes, outlets of which are available at various malls across the city.

Abu Dhabi’s long list of malls rivals shopping destinations in most metropolitan cities. Home to nearly 400 brands across categories, including Chopard, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, etc., Marina Mall is one of Abu Dhabi's premier shopping and entertainment destinations. The mall is also complete with a bowling alley and a nine-screen multiplex. Similarly, The Galleria — which overlooks the tranquil waters of Al Maryah Island — provides one of the finest luxury shopping experiences in the city, and is home to premium brands like Tiffany & Co., Fendi and IWC Schaffhausen, among others. What's an Arab city without its souks? From carpets (Carpet Souk) and antiques (The Souk at Central Market) to homeware (Iranian Souk) and handicrafts, Abu Dhabi has a buzzing bazaar for almost everything.

AL HAREESAl harees is a hearty dish consisting of slow-cooked meat with boiled or cracked wheat. A coarsely-ground paste, it is especially relished during Ramadan as it nourishes the body after a fast. Usually, it is cooked in a clay pot in an oven or a special hole-in-the-ground set-up that is topped with coal. A generous dollop of ghee (clarified butter) is added to the dish before it is finally served.

AL MAJBOOSA tangy meat dish, al majboos abounds with spices and dried lime. Prepared either with chicken or lamb, it is usually served with rice. One of the most popular dishes of Emirati cuisine, it features on most menus in local restaurants. Meat, the dish's primary ingredient, is marinated with cinnamon, turmeric, cumin, cardamom and saffron soaked in lemon juice — similar to Indian biryani. What sets the dish apart is the use of bezar, a mixture of local spices.

AL MADROOBAWhile fish is usually grilled or cooked here, al madrooba is a special delicacy due to its unique, salty flavour. A preparation of salt-cured fish and spices, it is topped with a richly made sauce. Usually cooked in a pot, the salty fish is called maleh, and is combined with flour to make a thick paste.

PROPERTY OWNERSHIP IN THAILAND

Foreigners cannot legally own Thai land but they can own the buildings on the land.

One of the best ways for foreigners to purchase land is via a Chanote (freehold title deed) with a long-term registered renewable lease structure.

Foreigners can legally own condominiums in their own name when the total foreign ownership quota in the condo development is less than 49 per cent. All Marina Condominiums at the Royal Phuket Marina are available with freehold titles.

In addition to its in-water berths and premium-covered dry stack, Royal Phuket Marina offers excellent on-site facilities, including a health club, boardwalk dining options, sunset drinking venues, and a spa. The marina is also a popular embarkation point for join-in tours and private charters to explore uninhabited offshore islands.

Royal Phuket Marina's strategic central location with easy access to the recently expanded Phuket International airport, golf courses, international schools and world-class hospitals, makes it the perfect place for a vacation home.

“Since the launch of GoAir’s daily direct flights linking India and Phuket, we’ve seen more people taking advantage of our upscale leisure facilities. There is also a marked increase in interest in our freehold residences which are all ready to move in,” said Mr. Lalvani. “The waterfront villas, penthouses and apartments offer the security of foreign freehold status, along with exceptional value and strong potential for capital appreciation.”

Ranging from 154 sq m to 528 sq m, Royal Phuket Marina offers some of the largest condominiums for sale on the island, all of which are available freehold.

More than a vacation home, these unique waterfront properties make great homes for extended families that can use them throughout the year.

All units offer the epitome of 5-star living, featuring award-winning layouts, high ceilings, expensive finishes and a host of fine interior details that include designer lighting, attractive wall and ceiling decorations and exquisite built-in furniture. FIRST THINGS FIRST There’s always someone waiting at the jetty to usher you to your guest house or hotel, free of charge. Such is the kindness that you can expect throughout your stay at Maafushi. The first thing to do after dropping your bags is to dab your sunscreen and make a beeline for the beach. Although the island offers a choice of secluded local beaches, its 'bikini beaches' are more preferred by tourists — and are usually more crowded than the regular ones — as they permit swimsuits. The Maldives is a Muslim

country. Hence, visitors are expected to dress modestly out of respect for the culture. Regardless, every beach here offers a view to die for.

SURF’S UP!Along the coast, you will find numerous shops offering a range of water sports activities — from the simple yet fun banana boat rides, kayaking and jet skiing to the more adventurous ones like handboarding, hoverboarding and flyboarding. Opt for underwater adventures such as diving and swimming alongside dolphins to experience the mesmerising marine life. Here you can closely view varied sea creatures from coral reefs and turtles to the beautiful manta rays. Many snorkelling day trips leave from Maafushi, most of which make a pit stop for lunch on a sandbank in the middle of the ocean.

LIVING LOCAL While the beaches here are the primary pull, Maafushi also enjoys a vibrant cultural life. Simply strolling through

the winding streets of the island offers a sneak peek into the lives of the locals. Admire lanes lined with multicoloured houses, pass by smiling children walking to school and watch people gathering to pray in the local green-roofed mosque. You can even visit the many grocery stores to scour fresh produce. As dusk falls, head to the buzzing jetty to watch fishermen hook the catch of the day, or sit back and gaze at the sun hiding into the horizon, painting the sky saffron.

FISH FIESTA Owing to its close proximity to India and Sri Lanka, Maafushi shares its spicy palate with these countries. The Dhivehi cuisine makes for the quintessential Maldivian

diet, and features ample fish, especially tuna. Start with a traditional Maldivian breakfast of mas huni, which comprises finely chopped tuna, onion, coconut, and chilli eaten with freshly baked roshi (flatbread), and tea. For lunch, chow down on kothu roshi (a stir-fried dish made with fish or meat, vegetables, and roshi), kulhi boakibaa (fish cakes) and masroshi (roshi stuffed with fish). To go lighter on the stomach, try out gulha (tuna dumplings), bis keemiya (egg puffs) and kavaabu (fish fritters). Start off your dinner with boshi mashuni (salad made with banana flowers and fresh coconut) and garudhiya (tuna soup); alternatively, sample dhon riha (tuna curry) and fihunu mas (grilled fish), and seal the deal with the signature saagu bondibai (sago pudding). Sound has been essential to many healing cultures for centuries. Ragas, for example, have been prescribed for specific ailments in the Vedas. While this doesn’t mean you ditch medicines for music, you can certainly use it to complement your health.

want to sample the freshest Thai produce, then you must visit the Naka Weekend Market.

If you’re a vegetarian, we got you covered. Head to Dok Bua Vegetarian Restaurant for the vegetarian version of the famed pad ka prao gai

HOW TO TRAVELThe best and most pocket-friendly way to commute in Phuket is either by songthaews or tuk–tuks. But be prepared to haggle since you could be over-charged. You can bargain well and agree on the price in advance. A ride would cost anywhere between TBH 25 to 50 (R60 to R100). Alternatively, explore the city on a two wheeler — rent a motorbike for TBH 200 (Approximately R460) for a day; a car would cost anywhere between TBH 1,000 to 2,000 (approximately R2,300 to R4,530) per day.

(chicken cooked in holy basil and chilli). Another favourite is the mixed vegetable Thai curry. Ruam Jai specialises in vegetarian versions of famous Southeast Asian dishes like Hokkien-style noodles, Thai curries, and stir-fried mix vegetables.

SMART TIP: You’re in for a treat if pork is your choice of meat. But in case it isn't, then do look for halal restaurants that line the beach road. These eateries will whip up a delicious fare, be it vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

SMART TIP: Alternatively, the staff at your hotel will be happy to arrange a taxi for you. Even as renting a taxi falls lighter on the pocket, do insist on going by the meter.

WHERE TO STAYThe area around Patong Beach is a prime location since it is dotted with some of the best resorts, hotels and restaurants, given its proximity to the beach. Some recommended stay options are BearPacker Patong Hostel, Patong Princess Hotel, Holiday Inn Resort Phuket, Millennium Resort and Seaview Patong Hotel. Staying at a hostel will help you meet like-minded people, and you could also relax by yourself without a care in the world.

Once at the beach, you can either lounge on the warm sand or take off for jet ski rides. And what with vendors selling sunglasses, ice creams, swimsuits and more, you will be truly spoilt for choice. Streets, here, are never deserted, and, in fact, are throbbing with tourists at night, all the way into early mornings on weekends.

WHERE TO PARTYPatong is lined with scores of bars and pubs; ping pong shows add that extra fun quotient to the night. In fact, Patong Beach also has some of the most coveted shopping markets in Phuket. Here, you’ll find everything from designer clothes and handbags to watches, shoes and accessories. The prices vary from product to product, so you must bargain. We promise you, this exercise won’t feel too far away from home.

SMART TIP: To try a slightly relaxed vibe, you can spend a few days in Old Phuket Town, where you can rub shoulders with locals. The quaint Old Town, with its narrow streets and colourful architecture, will leave any history buff in awe.

SONGKRAN If you are in Phuket in the month of April, then you certainly can't miss the vibrant festivities of Songkran. Also known as the Thai Water Festival, Songkran is celebrated from April 13 to 15. It beholds much national significance, as this is when the Thais beckon their new year. Literally meaning an astrological passage, Songkran signifies transformation or change.

The celebrations are rich with symbolic traditions, where local temples are visited and Buddhist monks are offered food. Both, young and elderly harmoniously pour water on statues of Lord Buddha, an act which represents the washing away of one’s sins. The festival also binds families and communities, as this is when people return home to unite with their loved ones.

As a tourist, you will be delighted to soak in the overall festive atmosphere brought about by decked-up streets and the young and the old playfully splashing water around (mind you, even tourists are not spared). You may also get to witness some traditional parades and the crowning of Miss Songkran where contestants are adorned in traditional Thai apparel.

The main event will take place at Saphan Hin Park, which will be transformed into a hive of live music and traditional performances. Bangla Road too will be the scene of revelry as celebrations go on till dawn.

On the Cards On the Cards

What your cards reveal...An overview of what to expect this month.

Aries

You could have a busy month

at work. It might do you some good if you check in with your closest friends to see how they feel about what you're doing. Ultimately, your goals don’t need the approval of others, but it’s still a smart idea to get feedback from those you trust. Take a deep breath and move slowly, or you

out on a limb with no easy way back.

Taurus

You are gaining clarity about your

long-term plans. However, take stock if your current path is really leading you to where you want to go. It might not be the right time to shift directions, but planning for the changes ahead is surely a smart thing to do. Look around you for inspiration; you have enough friends and family to help you out.

Gemini

You might be a bit uncomfortable

as a close friend or lover presses you to express your intentions about your relationship. You would rather avoid answering with a yes or no; however, there may not be an easy way to dance around the edge. Don’t put it off any longer. Make your decision and put your words into action.

Leo

You might want to tone down your

directness, for your actions could be a bit intimidating to someone who isn’t so straightforward. Even though you're not one to beat around the bush, self-restraint will work in your favour now. Being diplomatic will help you to get what you want.

Cancer

You are eager to deepen your

connection with a special someone now, but you might not be as loving if your partner is overly demanding. It may be wise for you to retreat just enough to reconnect with your own needs

re-establish your centre, you’ll be better equipped to communicate your feelings.

Virgo

You can tap into a deep well

of creativity, but

sensible method to integrate it into your day, or you won’t have much to show for your efforts. Instead of trying to capture a sudden burst of brilliance, concentrate on

that’s comfortable enough to sustain. Being productive is more important than being clever.

DO ELECTIONS MATTER?

MUTUAL FUND INVESTMENTS ARE SUBJECT TO MARKET RISKS, READ ALL SCHEME RELATED DOCUMENTS CAREFULLY.

India being the biggest democratic country (in terms of population) in the world, elections have always assumed a special place in the country’s psyche. From 17.3 crore voters and 53 political parties in the first election (1951) to 83.4 crore voters and 465 political parties in 2014, elections in India have evolved over time with adoption of electronic voting machines and NOTA option being introduced in the electoral process.

While the outcome of election does impact various aspects of our economy in different ways, the skepticism associated with stock markets leading up to the elections is palpable. The biggest fear in investors’ minds leading up to the elections is the possibility of a fractured mandate resulting in a coalition government of multiple parties.

However, is this skepticism warranted if one is looking for long term wealth creation? Do coalition governments really spell bad news for markets in the long run? Do election results actually have any bearing on market returns? History answers these questions for us better than anyone else.

Although, it can be observed that India has consistently had coalition governments over the last 3 decades, SENSEX has grown almost 50 times from 747 in October 89 to 36,257 as of Jan’19. In spite of the risks associated with coalition governments, markets

continue to reward patient investors. Why so?

In the long run, financial markets are dependent on the economy and track a country’s economic growth/corporate profitability, although, in the short run they may not move in tandem with economy, owing to market sentiments driven by various factors. The relation between economy and markets can be explained with a simple example. We go to a park where we see a dog owner walking his dog. While the dog owner walks the dog in a particular direction, the dog leaps randomly from one direction to the other, stops abruptly, barks at passersby etc. While one cannot predict what the dog will do next, one can be sure that the dog will eventually reach the destination where the dog owner is headed. Similarly, as an investor, one needs to pay more attention to the long term growth of economy instead of short term volatility in the markets.

Any volatility leading up to the elections, due to uncertainty about election results, could provide a good buying opportunity for investors looking for long term wealth creation.

While you may not be untouched by the hype around elections, your investment decisions should be free from any predictions and uncertainties around election outcome. Next time someone asks you whether election results have positive or negative impact on stock markets in the long run, you can certainly opt for NOTA (None Of The Above).

“The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author alone and not of HDFC AMC, and should not be regarded as investment advice. Investors should obtain their own independent advice before taking a decision to invest in any securities.”

Getting by with less might be

a good practice now, what with less money at your disposal. The Japanese philosophy of minimalism will teach you a lot about life, and this will shape your future. Conserving your resources and making good use of them is one of the best ways to move ahead in life.

Scorpio

I t would be wise to decide what you’re

willing to give in return for what you want. You don’t win extra points by ending up with more. You might want to shrug off some greed, in order to avoid tricky negotiations. Instead of trying to squeeze too much out of the situation at someone else’s expense, turn it into a game where everyone wins.

Sagittarius

You might have to

stand if you are pushed to the limit. You could start out by setting your boundaries when faced with a powerful opponent. Don’t be afraid to openly disagree, even if the odds are not in your favour. It’s not about winning the argument; it’s simply about making sure that you are heard.

Aquarius

When push comes to shove,

you are quite capable of holding your own ground, even against a very convincing

yourself withdrawing as someone tries to get you to reveal secrets. Remember, you cannot be forced to share anything that you want to keep to yourself now.

Capricorn

Others can get more than

they bargained for if they try to control you, for your intense emotions are churning just beneath the surface, causing you to react at the slightest instigation. Your swift reaction may be overstated. Take a few deep breaths and let your anxieties settle before you respond.

Pisces

Social situations

can become complicated because each person has a different set of needs and desires. However, some satisfaction can be brought in if you navigate the emotional landscape. It’s better to be honest and express your true feelings, even if it means that a disagreement lingers without resolution.

Over 27,000 children from across Mumbai participated in the Little Hearts Marathon this year.

RUN FOR A CAUSE

N ow in its sixth edition, Little

Hearts Marathon aims to engage the community to participate in a fun event to help raise funds for cardiac surgeries at the Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children (BJWHC), Mumbai. Advocating a healthy lifestyle among children, the marathon has channelled its

editions towards state-of-the-art infrastructure and an excellent team of doctors and trained nurses for the Pediatric Cardiac Centre at BJWHC. This year’s marathon was

actor John Abraham. Dr. Minnie Bodhanwala, CEO of Wadia Hospitals, Corporator Shri. Datta Pongade among others were also present.

In India, approximately 1,00,000 babies are born each year with

‘major’ and ‘critical’ congenital heart disease (CHD). As symptoms for CHD begin as early as one or two months of age, late diagnosis is the main reason for increased mortality and morbidity. Approximately, 10 per cent of India’s infant mortality can be attributed to a general lack of awareness about CHD. The objective of the Little Hearts Marathon is to ‘Save hearts, Save Lives.’

The rate of cardiac diseases in young adults is increasing alarmingly due to a sedentary lifestyle and in Maharashtra alone, there are over 500 children on the waiting list for heart surgeries.

Dr. Minnie Bodhanwala said, “There has been an increase in kids’ participation from an initial 5,000 children in

Parents travelling with toddlers or infants should feed their kids during take-off and landing to avoid discomfort in the ears.
