Esta exposición es resultado del trabajo de campo que el Mtro. Ivan Carroll Janer realizó entre los menonitas Altkolonier o de la Vieja Co-lonia, establecidos al Sur de Quintana Roo. Al inicio Carroll fue acompañado al campo por la Mtra. Ana Isabel Buitrago, su esposa, y su hijo. Ella fue la que comenzó a tomar fotografías en la comuni-dad y luego Carroll continuó con esta labor en sus temporadas de campo posteriores. Dicha actividad dio como resultado 300 fotogra-fías, de las cuales se exhiben 22 en la exposición.

La intención de Ivan y Ana Isabel es compartir, a través de estas imágenes su experiencia etnográfica y la convivencia con un grupo campesino que surgió en el corazón de Europa, migró a Rusia, lue-go a Canadá, más tarde a México, después a Belice para finalmen-te establecerse en Bacalar, Quintana Roo.

Los menonitas de Balacar

Los menonitas derivan su nombre de uno de los fundadores del gru-po, el anabaptista Menno Simons. El movimiento fue violentado y perseguido desde sus orígenes en el siglo XVI, por católicos y lute-ranos. Esta persecución generó que Menno y sus seguidores inicia-ran una constante migración en busca de establecerse en lugares

seguros. Así es como llegan al sur de Rusia y más de un siglo des-pués, las exigencias para que los menonitas presentaran su servicio militar y su negativa los hicieron migrar a Canadá, a las provincias de Manitoba y Saskatchewan donde la germanofobia y la solicitud canadiense de abandonar sus escuelas tradicionales los llevó a Chi-huahua, México en 1922.

Más tarde, el gobierno mexicano les solicitó inscribirse al seguro so-cial, y en 1950 decidieron migrar a Estados Unidos de América pero en la frontera fueron convencidos que tendrían mejores posibilida-des en Belice y así ha sido. Sin embargo, hace aproximadamente una década, debido a que se les terminó la tierra para cultivar, mi-gran al sur del estado de Quintana Roo para ubicarse en el ejido de Salamanca. Este grupo es de los más tradicionales, de ahí que se hagan llamar Altkolonier o de la Vieja Colonia.

This exhibition is the result of field work that Mr. Carroll carried out among the Altkolonier Mennonites community (also known as the Old Colony), established to the South of Quintana Roo. At the begin-ning Mr. Carroll was in the company of his wife and his son. It was Mrs. Carroll who started to take pictures of the community, and then Mr. Carroll continued with this effort during his subsequent field trips. Such activity resulted in about 300 pictures, of which 22 form part of the exhibition.

Through these images Mr. and Mrs. Carrroll want to share their ethno-graphic and life experiences with a farmer community that origina-ted in the heart of Europe, migrated to Russia, then to Canada, and later to Mexico and Belize to finally establish in Balacar, Quintana Roo.

The Mennonites of Balacar

The Mennonites derived their name from one of the founders of the group, the Anabaptists Menno Simons. The movement was persecu-ted by Catholics and Lutherans since its origins in the sixteenth cen-tury. This persecution motivated Menno and his followers to be in a steady migration, looking to establish in safe places. This is how

they arrived to the south of Russia; more than a century later, their refusal to comply with the requirements to perform military service, forced them to migrate to Canada, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Lo-cal germanophobes combined with Canada's request to abandon their traditional schools, led them to Chihuahua, Mexico in 1922.

Later, the Mexican government requested them to register with the social security system. In 1950 they decided to migrate to the Uni-ted States of America but on the border were convinced that they would have better opportunities in Belize and so far, it has been the case. However, approximately a decade ago, due to their need of more farming land, they decided to migrate to the south of the Quin-tana Roo state, located in the 'ejido' of Salamanca. This group is one of the more traditional ones, hence their connotation as Altkolonier or Old Colony.

Cornelius, es el primogénito de un matrimonio joven pero como aún está pequeño, no puede cuidarse por sí sólo o ser cuidado mientras Sara, su madre, arregla y lava la ropa. Por suerte, los abuelos y tíos, están encantados de tenerlo en casa.

Cornelius is the firstborn of a young couple, and because he is still so young and can not stay alone, his mom, Sara, shares his care with his grandparents and uncles, aunts, who love having him with them at home.

Cuando una esposa fallece, el viudo rápidamente vuelve a casar-se para no desatender el campo y otra mujer pueda hacerse car-go de los niños. Tina es la segunda hija de un segundo matrimo-nio de 3 hijos. También tiene 8 hermanastros que su padre tuvo con su primera esposa. Tiene 7 años y está aprendiendo de su madre las labores del hogar.

When a wife dies, the widower marries again quickly, so he does not neglect his crops and his new wife can take care of the chil-dren. Tina is the second daughter of her dad's second marriage. She has two siblings and eight half siblings from her dad's first marriage. She is 7 years old and is learning from her mom all the household duties required at home.

Margaretha, una niña de 12 años, es muy concentrada en sus la-bores, aunque también aprovecha sus ratos libres para jugar y reir con sus amigas.

Margaretha, is a 12-year old who is very focused in her duties, but also takes advantage of her free time to play and laugh with her friends.

Anna tiene 34 años y se encuentra en el gallinero ayudando a sa-car unos pollitos de su cascarón.

Tiene a su cargo a sus tres hijos y a ocho hijastros, dos de los cua-les ya se han casado.

Anna a 34-years old woman, is helping chicks to hatch at the henhouse.

She takes care of her three children and eight stepchildren, of which two are already married.

A pesar de que saben preparar queso menonita, este no es cono-cido por las personas de Quintana Roo, han aprendido la elabo-ración del queso Oaxaca para venderlo en casas y negocios.

Since Mennonite cheese is not known by the people of Quintana Roo, the Mennonites have learnt to make Oaxaca cheese which is sold at homes and local businesses.

Johann está muy pendiente del cuidado y la alimentación de las vacas, los caballos y las gallinas.

Está mudando los dientes, aunque para los menonitas con mayo-res recursos es muy común usar dientes postizos.

Johann is very understanding of the care and feeding of cattle, horses and chickens.

He is getting his permanent teeth. Mennonites with higher resour-ces tend to use false teeth or dentures.

Las hijas de Bernhard se encargan de cortar las cabezas y desplu-mar los pollos para la comida.

En otras ocasiones lo hacen para la venta.

The daughters of Bernhard are responsible for plucking and cutting the heads of chickens for food.

On other occasions they do it for sale.

Después del trabajo en el campo y en el hogar, las noches son aprovechadas por los adultos y niños para reunirse y platicar.

Los frascos de vidrio son reutilizados para guardar conservas que ellos mismos preparan como, por ejemplo, mermelada de ciruela, pepinos y carne de cerdo recién sacrificado, entre otros.

The glass bottles are reused to store preserves prepared by themselves, preserved food that they prepared as, for example, plum jam, cucumbers and freshly slaughtered pork, among others.

La mesa es el lugar de encuentro de la familia nuclear durante las comidas del día.

Antes y después de comer dan gracias a Dios por los alimentos.

El padre se sienta en la cabecera pero si hay invitados estos ocu-pan ese lugar.

El bebé también tiene un lugar alrededor de la mesa y una silla.

The table is a meeting place for the family circle meals .

Before and after dinner, they give thanks to God for the food .

The father sits at the head , but if there are guests they occupy that place.

The baby also has a place around the table and a chair for him/her.

Las mujeres no se cortan el cabello, sin embargo, este nunca de-be mostrarse largo y suelto.

Women do not cut their hair, however, it should never appear long and loose .

Algunos menonitas son muy hábiles con la fabricación metalmecánica y con la reparación de motores diesel.

Heinrich Schmitt y sus hijos construyeron este tractor, que lo llaman “La Araña”, capaz de fumi-gar cuando el maíz está crecido a diferencia de otros tractores.

Some Mennonites are very skillful with metalworking manufacturing and capable of repairing diesel engines .

Heinrich Schmitt and his sons built this tractor; they call it "The Spider", and it is capable of spraying when corn is fully grown unlike other tractors.

La crianza de cerdos se ha convertido en una actividad económica reciente.

Pig farming has become an economic activity recently.

Peter está casado con Katharina y tiene 12 hijos. Viven en Campo 9 distante del Centro de la comunidad y de las dos tiendas.

Peter me enseña dos marranas que acaban de parir. Es muy impor-tante ya que él tiene menores ingresos en comparación con otros menonitas.

Peter is married to Katharina and they have 12 children. They live in Field 9, quite distant from the center of the community and of the two local shops.

Peter shows me two sows that have just given birth . It's very impor-tant for him, because he has lower income compared with other Men-nonites.

MEDIOS DE TRANSPORTE8

La carreta o buggie es el medio de transporte más utilizado por los menonitas de la Vieja Colonia.

Las carretas son elaboradas por ellos mismos bajo un minucioso trabajo de metal-mecánica.

The wagon or buggy is the main mean of transportation used by the Mennonites of the Old Colony .

They build the wagons using thorough metalworking techniques.

Esta carreta de dos ruedas va más rápido y se usa por lo general cuando se necesita hacer una diligencia de prisa.

This two-wheeled cart goes faster and is genera-lly used when one needs to run an errand in a hurry.

MATRIMONIO9

Es común que las casas tengan un cuarto destinado para que las hijas cuando crezcan entren con el novio para conocerse.

Este cuarto no es para tener relaciones sexuales ya que todas las jóvenes deben llegar vírgenes al matrimonio.

Los noviazgos duran de 3 a 5 años y el matrimonio es hasta que la muerte los sepa-re.

Homes usually have a room destined for boyfriends and girlfriends to get to know each other once they grow up.

This room is not for sexual relations, because all young people should marry still be-ing virgins.

Courtships last about 3 to 5 years and marriage is until death due them apart.
