Letter from the rectory
Jeff and I love to walk. It’s our
favourite pastime and the focus of
our holidays not to mention our
daily walks with our dog, Oscar.
Many of us have appreciated afresh
the benefits of walking during the
past few months – and we are
especially thankful to God for this
beautiful part of the world. Health
experts say it reduces our risk of
certain diseases, and generally
helps our mental as well as our
physical well-being. There are also
reports that it reduces the risk of
getting dementia.
But while we enjoy walking in the beauty of the Dales, sometimes we have the experience that we are
walking around in circles or walking towards disaster. This happens personally in our lives and in society at
large.
In such circumstances we all need hope - one of the most important things in the Bible. In fact, St Paul says
that in the end only 3 things remain – Faith, Hope and Love. So how do we walk with hope? This month’s
‘verse of the month’ quoted above, says that ‘those who put their hope in the Lord… will walk and not be
faint.’ This is a kind of spiritual walking – the act of trusting that whatever happens, God is there, and
ultimately ‘all will be well’ to quote the mystic, Julian of Norwich.
Not that it’s easy. When Jesus walked to the cross, it can’t have been an easy walk and any hope he had in
God his Father at that point wasn’t of a fluffy sitting-on-a-cloud type. He was in pain, with more to come, in
the cruelty of crucifixion and the darkness of the uncertainty of death. I don’t know if Jesus walked
hopefully that day. But maybe he remembered this verse from Isaiah, ‘that those who hope in the Lord will
renew their strength… they will walk and not faint.’ God his Father was his only hope – and his last words
were, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.’ Three days later, in the Resurrection, Jesus embodied
hope in a way previously unimaginable, which gives us the light of hope, whatever our circumstances.
We hope that you enjoy whatever walking you
are able to do as Autumn comes on and Winter
hovers round the corner. Jeff and I will be doing
some walking – we’re calling it the ‘Walk of 6’!!
We hope it will help those of us who take part
in body, mind and spirit. You can read about it
later on in Bridge.

Middleham Sports and Community Wellbeing Association (MSCWA)
The main activity following the July 4th easing of CV-19 restrictions has been to resurrect the football pitch at the
Sports field.
Sunday 30th August saw a Charity match between Middleham and
Spennithorne arranged by Mikey Anderson. The Hewson family boys of
three were the main thrust in a 7-3 victory for Middleham. Our intrepid
postman Ian was a tower of strength as goalkeeper.
The pitch was
sideways on
compared to the ‘old days’, but with help from Leyburn Town
Football Club it is hoped to establish a full-size pitch longways
after cricket has finished. We have acquired some old second-
hand full-size goal posts for now until we can afford £3,500 for a
new up-to-date set.
If anyone is interested to re-establish Middleham Football club
with a proper committee of Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer,
groundsman at least as a committee, contact me please.
Another prestigious ‘hire’ of the cricket field saw two services regiments oppose each other in a friendly 20/20 in the
rain (right picture above).
A small part of the CV-19 grant from local Government has been spent on servicing machinery and purchasing
peripheral football equipment.

Middleham Cricket Club
Cricket returned in late July with friendly matches within existing leagues
and only one match against the teams, as opposed to home and away, with
no promotion or relegation.
The Nidderdale League insisted on a full risk assessment (displayed at
every match) with no changing or teas and teams sitting outside if possible
or in cars, socially distanced. Sanitising of hands and ball occurs after every
6/10 overs.
Middleham first X1 started well, but injury to captain Ollie Mullard, ‘golf weekends’ and non-availability have left
them mid table at the end of the brief season.
The 2nd X1 however under the captaincy of Richard Sanderson topped
their division 7 league which led to a top 4 play off and as we go to press
an excellent semi-final win over Darley has put Middleham through to the
final on Saturday 19th September at Middleham against Pannal Ash 1st X1
starting at 12.30.
Junior cricket has continued on Mondays and midweek evening league matches played.
A reminder for next year end of August-WORLD GOLDEN OLDIES (over 50) tournament with matches at Middleham

'Running to Church' by Laura Sugden
I am by no means a runner (or photographer for that matter) but this past year you may have seen me slog along the roads in an attempt to get fit, build strength and run for my life! I have started to run from Middleham to East Witton via Coverham and this morning when I was out I took in some of the sights, not least 3 magnificent Churches! As I headed past Pinker’s Pond dipping towards Coverham the solitary sight of the Church hits you and I know the hard bit is done!! Along
the road with the rhythm of the river and the shade of the trees there are spectacular sights of the Yorkshire Dales rising above.
I have a nod to the sheep and cows and passing walkers before finding myself
coming into East Witton, over half way and steady on home. East Witton Church is a stunning place but hard to capture when running away from it! A quick break to get a peek through the hedge then onwards
past Cover Bridge and the short uphill to Middleham. By now I'm puffed, gasping for air, but plod onwards up the hill! Another glorious sight awaits with the towering force of St Alkelda's! I made it again! The problem with living in such a beautiful place, though, is that I stop to take pictures and take in
the glorious sights around us. But I'm not running for world records, I'm running to get where I'm going and with a cool gin on a warm Bank Holiday it is well worth it! Laura is raising money for the Stroke Association – visit her Great North Run ‘Just Giving’ page:

Trevor Smith – Coverdale’s Weather Man
Many of you will have read Trevor Smith’s weather reports in Bridge over the last decade and a bit and like
me will have been astounded at Trevor’s knowledge. I asked Trevor how he got interested in the weather
in the first place, and Trevor recounted two early memories. Firstly the severe weather or 1947 when
severe cold spells brought large drifts of snow to the
country, blocking roads and railways, causing
problems transporting coal to the power stations,
leading to power cuts, closing down parts of industry,
limiting radio broadcasts and television services, and
newspapers had to be reduced in size. Such
measures, on top of the low temperatures, badly
affected public morale and the Minister of Fuel and
Power, Emanuel Shinwell received death threats and
had to be placed under police guard! Towards the
end of February, there were also fears of a food
shortage as supplies were cut off and vegetables
were frozen into the ground. About a quarter of the
nation’s sheep perished. It was a tough time!
Then came a very quick thaw, which Trevor saw
first hand – visiting family friends in Gainsborough
he observed the floods caused by the River Trent
bursting its banks.
Another inspiration for his interest was big
thunderstorms – Trevor wanted to know why they
happened. And so began a lifelong interest in
meteorology. Beginning when he was only 13,
Trevor started keeping weather records, and with
a friend, looked after the school weather station. (They are still in touch, by the way!)
Trevor has been keeping records of the weather in Carlton for the last 44 years, when he and his wife and
small children moved there. (Belated congratulations to Trevor and his wife on their 50th wedding
anniversary this year!)
The work that Trevor and others (who are similarly interested in the statistics of weather) do is invaluable
to the Environment Agency. For one, it helps to build a picture of weather patterns and changes in the
climate – probably the most important issue that will affect human beings in the 21st century. Secondly,
the work of this indomitable group can help to mitigate the consequence of certain weather events. For
example, Trevor explained to me that by weighing samples of snow at 3 sites, and then taking an average,
and informing the Environment Agency of the reading, they will know if a flood is likely and inform local
communities.
Trevor was encouraged by his parents to take up his hobby as a meteorologist. And
his own grandson is following in the family tradition and has set up his own rain
gauge. You can easily get hold of ‘starter kits’ or you can use a tall fizzy drinks bottle.
Here’s a connection to youtube to show you how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdeKdT0nwow
Trevor is ‘retiring’ from writing the weather article for Bridge each month, but he will most
certainly not be retiring from his meterological hobby. The weather in Carlton is in safe
hands as he continues to monitor it diligently. I am sure all readers would like to express
their thanks to Trevor for sharing his statistics with us over the years. Thank you so much, Trevor.
Bird notes from Richard Wells Neil Mabbott reported seeing a hen harrier on the Low Moor at Middleham early in August. Not the usual
place to see this iconic raptor, but a welcome one and who knows quite a few of us might be seeing more of them in the coming months. I say this because after more than a decade of population decline this species has had an excellent breeding season in 2020. Seventeen nests were located in the Dales and from these more than 60 young were reared to the flying stage. Two of the nests were on heather moorland above Coverdale.
This is a controversial species because of its liking for red grouse which brings it into conflict with gaming interests and there is little doubt that it has been persecuted. Let us not go into details but just delight in the fact that they have had a good breeding season and that hopefully they will be left alone to forge a positive future amongst us. On the subject of raptors apparently both white-tailed eagle and golden eagle have been seen in parts of
the Yorkshire Dales in the past month. Not sure precisely where but these are enormous birds and must have been some spectacle.
A great white egret has twice been spotted around the River Ure towards Jervaulx and after significant rainfall at the end of August a flock of at least 20 Mandarin duck were seen near Harkersbeck. No-one has provided me with a convincing reason
why one of the barn owls in the photograph published last month had brown spots on its white legs. Frank Johnston suggested that it was the biggest bird and might have had something to do with its maturity but I am not convinced! You still have time to put your thinking caps on. Your sightings are always welcome at [email protected]

Weddings and Funerals Update: (subject to change) Weddings are now permitted with limited numbers (max 15, but may be less depending on the building) and social distancing rules Funerals are limited to a maximum of 30 people, though this could be less depending on the capacity to safely social distance in each particular church building. Funerals directors have current information on government guidelines, and parish policies, which vary. We know that people like to pay their respects, so to help with this, in conjunction with families and funeral directors, there is the possibility of inviting people to line the streets of their communities as the hearse passes. Information will be given to the local communities as to when this will happen.

‘Walk of 6’
The rectors, Jeff and Liz, would love to invite you on a socially distanced ‘Walk of 6’. We are doing a series of walks of either an hour or two hours, and a few shorter strolls too for those who can’t go too far.
With current regulations – we are limiting numbers to a maximum of 6.
Our first walk at the end of September (see left) saw 4 of us enjoying the glories of a circular walk from East Witton.
If you would like to come at some point, please email [email protected] and we’ll let you know when a walk is coming up. We’d love to
see you. We know walking is good for body, mind and spirit. Well behaved dogs are welcome too!
Open Evening for Year 5 and 6 students at Wensleydale School- Covid-19
We have had a very positive return to school. Currently our
attendance is at 93%, which is fantastic, as the national figure is
much lower.
Start and end of the day procedures have improved every day
and the students are responding to the new protocols with
maturity. There is no doubt things are different, but the school is
calm and orderly.
Lunch has been a particular success, as I do the whole 1 and 1/2
hour duty, it has been a pleasure to see everyone chatting, eating
and making best use of the limited social time they have.
We are following the Department for Education's advice on track
and trace within a school setting, just so you are aware of the
process we go through if we get any confirmed cases or a family
member tests positive. If this does happen, please let us know
immediately and isolate as a family until we have further details
from Public Health England.
Next week Year 7 will take some on line CAT tests, these will help
us to assess their start points as they were unable to sit SATs this
year. Nothing to worry about, or prepare for, we will guide the
students through the process.
Year 5 & Open Evenings ‘Covid Style’: Normally in early October we would throw open our doors for prospective
Year 5 and 6 students and parents to visit and see what life at Wensleydale is all about. This year we are having to
think differently. So there will be a Virtual tour and welcome video going our via social media, website and via
primary schools. However we would like to extend an open offer for anyone to make an appointment for a socially
distanced tour of school at any time from today. Please ring the main office and we will do the rest.
Telephone: 01969 622244 Email: [email protected]
If we are able to run some sort of open evening- we will let you know in good time.
Our children are a credit to our community.
Stay safe. Julia Polley, Headteacher ************************************************************************
